EDITOR’S PERSPECTIVE I’ve had a thought provoking lesson in life recently. I noticed it after we began getting numerous phone calls and emails here at Metropol complimenting us on the new format. It’s been wonderful hearing about how, when and where people read the mag and how they are enjoying it Angela Bennett, Editor and finding it more convenient. But what I noticed I was saying in response (to those close to me) wasn’t so good. This is how it played out: a friend would say, “I really like what you are doing with the magazine,” and I would say something like, “Thanks but we need to improve ‘so and so’,” or “Thanks, we are on a learning curve and we will make it even better…” Eventually I realised I was doing something similar to the girls on comedian Amy Schumer’s Compliments skit. It’s on YouTube but be warned it is uncensored and could offend some people. The skit depicts a group of women greeting each other by doling out kind words. The recipient then immediately dismisses the accolades and tosses out self-loathing remarks in response. Here’s a softened version: “Oh I look pretty? No I actually look like an old toothbrush. I look like someone locked out of her apartment,” “Me little? I’m so fat! I’m a cow.” “Congratulations on my new job? I’m going to be fired in like two seconds… ” The video is way over the top, but it does highlight a problem that a lot of women have – accepting kind remarks from others, especially other women. Why can’t some of us accept compliments easily? I think it’s all to do with our own self-worth. If we feel like we are having a bad hair day, or our outfit isn’t quite working and someone compliments us they are disagreeing with our view of ourselves and this causes a paradox in our minds. But kind words deserve more than instant dismissal. I enjoyed a piece from Brett and Kate McKay’s article on this subject: “Idle words are characterless and die upon utterance. Evil words rankle for a while, make contentions, and then die. But the hopeful, kind, cheering words sink into a man’s heart and go on bearing fruit forever.” It’s true; some kind words from a coach, boss or mentor pointing out your attributes can be all the difference between being successful or giving up. From now on I’m going to accept compliments with a thank you and no modifications. And I’m going to look for more reasons to compliment others, I’m sure this will help me focus on more of life’s positives.

Think about it… “We are prepared for insults, but compliments leave us baffled.” Mason Cooley

five minutes with S

triving for the best and making the most out of life has driven Paul Wright to achieve his personal goals, and as a natural progression motivated him to help others to achieve theirs. A keen Cantabrian, Paul is Chairman and co-owner of Harcourts International, a real estate franchising group. We all know Harcourts well – it’s a huge NZ success story operating in 10 countries with 800 offices and 10,000 people working under its umbrella. Paul’s passion is ‘developing talent’ and in 2011 he co-founded the Inspire Foundation as a not-for-profit organisation to provide grants and development programmes for extraordinary Cantabrians. I caught up with this inspirational businessman to find out a little more about his business and leisure… How long have you been involved in real estate and how did you start out in the industry? I’ve been in the industry for over 30 years, starting as a salesperson with Steve Collins of Collins Real Estate back in the ‘80s. I went on to manage his office as we merged with Harcourts of Wellington in 1985 and then was part of the MBO in 1990. We’ve been growing the business ever since. What do you enjoy most about the real estate industry? The opportunity the industry provides for anyone motivated and committed to succeed. You don’t have to be an Einstein or have a Uni degree to be phenomenally successful. It’s a very rewarding business in the experiences you have, the relationships you develop and the skills you can build. And it can be financially rewarding if you look after your clients.

4 Sept 18, 2014 Metropol

Paul Wright Back in the early days did you ever dream Harcourts would be such a success? We’ve always set ambitious goals and written down some pretty crazy dreams as well, as the years have gone by it’s fair to say we’ve been amazed at how much we’ve achieved and we feel we’re still just scratching the surface, now we want to be a global brand in 100 countries! Who has been your most inspiring mentor? Probably Steve Collins, he had a vision to expand his business out of Christchurch and become a New Zealand Brand, he showed us the power of having a vision and the courage to drive for it against tough odds. What is your personal philosophy on success in life? Enjoy the journey, surround yourself with talent, be loyal and supportive to those you meet and help others to achieve more than they think possible and you will be successful. On a world-wide stage, with extreme competition, why do you believe Harcourts has succeeded where many others have not? People all over the world have responded to the Harcourts culture built on good old fashioned New Zealand values: ‘do the right thing’, ‘be courageous’, ‘people first’ and ‘fun and laughter’, we have a great reputation and we’re recognised for having the best training in the industry and our in house developed technology and e-Business platform is a game changer for us.

Why did you co-found the Inspire Foundation? Bob Davison and I are both involved in other Foundations which are restricted by their charters to funding community groups and other charities. We were continually approached by talented individuals who wanted assistance and we were not able to help them. So we started the Inspire Foundation to fund and develop talented young Cantabrians by ensuring that the Inspire Charter allowed the widest possible array of funding options for individuals. Continued from page 4

What type of people is the Inspire Foundation looking for? We want talented young Cantabrians (15 to 23 years old) in any areas - for example, arts, sciences, music, technology, education, community involvement or sport. They have to have a proven track record and have a burning desire to pursue their chosen field or endeavour.

“IF YOU WANT PROBLEMS SOLVED, IF YOU WANT INNOVATION, IF YOU WANT TO SUCCEED, THEN YOU NEED LEADERS, OUR INVESTMENT IS IN THESE FUTURE LEADERS.”

Which is your favourite café, bar or restaurant in Canterbury? Buddha Stix for lunch, café Sismo for coffee and Dux Dine for Dinner – all on one road, easy!

How many people have received grants from the Foundation and in what fields do their interests lie? We have given more than 100 grants in three years since we set the foundation up. The recipients have included sports people: cyclists, mountain bikers, skiers, snow boarders, runners, and rowers to name a few; we’ve had, dancers, singers, musicians, opera singers, inventors, engineers, coaches, community volunteers, designers and gymnasts, the list goes on. How do you see this investment in talented people assisting Canterbury long term? Investing in talent is investing in the future leaders of Canterbury. If you want change, if you want problems solved, if you want innovation, if you want to succeed, then you need leaders, our investment is in these future leaders. How has the Inspire Foundation been received by the community in general? The Foundation has been well received by the community, our supporters, generous benefactors and sponsors ‘get’ what we’re about, they understand our singular focus on young talented people and our commitment to guide them into becoming future leaders. Our commitment to always ensure that 100% of donations given are passed onto Grantees stands us in good stead with our community. What type of businesses support the Foundation and how can others get involved? We have over 40 Canterbury based businesses supporting the foundation and they are all featured on our website www.inspirefoundation.co.nz; we are looking for new members to join our crusade as we discover an ever increasing pool of talented young people in our province.

What were you doing the last time the thought went through your mind, “I shouldn’t be doing this”? Biking down Mt Ventoux in a howling gale thinking I hope I don’t get blown over the edge, after biking so hard to get to the top.

What would you like to see in the ‘new’ Christchurch? A new convention centre and a restored Christchurch Cathedral.

Anton Cooper - world mountain bike champion, Paul Wright Chairman Inspire Foundation and Sophie Pascoe with her Olympic medals.

On a more personal note – what is your favourite item of clothing? Depending on the day or time: My 7.5mm wetsuit for diving, my Mt Ventoux Lycra top for cycling and my pin stripe suit for work. What music are you enjoying at present? I listen to Chris de Burgh, Leonard Cohen, and Mark Knopfler. What one book would you suggest everyone read? Shantaram – amazing book. What hobbies do you enjoy? I enjoy road cycling, scuba diving, tennis, and rugby. If you could go back and tell your teenage self something what would it be? Be the best person you can be, work harder, be more courageous, say yes more than you say no when you’re asked, and always set higher and more ambitious goals and dreams.

What one thing does Canterbury need to ditch? The silo mentality of the councils and the other bureaucracies operating in our city that bogs down our small province from running effectively. What are you like at parties? I like to let my hair down and have a good time and I like to ‘work the room’ getting around as many people as I can. What is next on your wish list? Inspire wise – it’s to build a capital base to help the Foundation endure for the benefit of future generations of Cantabrians, and personally I’m looking forward to celebrating my daughter’s engagement.

Wild daisy most daring dish

H

amilton's Victoria Street Bistro has been crowned the coveted title of the 2014 Monteith's Wild Food Challenge winner with its dish 'Wild Daisy'. Both the judges and people's choice favourite, it was the display of beer matching expertise paired with extraordinary fare that took Victoria Street Bistro to the top this year. “The 12 finalists were all very strong contenders, each in their individual ways. However, Wild Daisy was the stand-out dish due to Head Chef Andrew Clarke skilfully melding unusual ingredients such as smoked oyster and sea chicory into his dish and successfully partnering them with a complex beer – the Double Hopped IPA,” says Head Judge Kerry Tyack. Wild Daisy was up against 122 fierce competitors including One Highly Strung Pig, Deer to Indulge and Hare of the Dog. The victorious feast showcased an acute understanding of wild flavours featuring sous vide wild beef with smoked oyster cream and textures of sea chicory, foraged native mushrooms and a pearl onion flower.

Build up to Cook's 250th

O

ne of the great milestones in global exploration will be celebrated in the Marlborough Sounds early next year. Luxury Lodge, Bay Of Many Coves, is beginning the build-up towards the 250th anniversary of Captain James Cook's circumnavigation of New Zealand. Cook sighted landfall off Poverty Bay in 1769 as he was searching for the great southern continent and, early the following year on January 16, he sailed into Ship Cove in Queen Charlotte Sound. He was to make the cove his base, spending over 100 days there. During his three voyages to New Zealand he visited Ship Cove on five occasions as it provided safe anchorage, food and fresh water, a place to relax and timber to repair his ships, the Endeavour and the Resolution. Luxury Lodge, Bay Of Many Coves, is only a few breaths of wind away from Ship Cove and, in January next year, it begins the build-up to the 250th anniversary in 2020. Co-owner of Bay Of Many Coves, Murray McCaw, is offering a special Captain Cook Package between January 5 and 25, 2015, which includes a voyage of discovery to Cook's landing place. Guests will also have the opportunity to sample a special Spruce Beer, made from Captain Cook's traditional recipe. Cook was the first to brew beer in New Zealand using molasses, manuka and rimu leaves. The same traditional ingredients are used in this distinctive craft ale which has won nine brewing awards.

Justice and emergency A major step forward in the development of central Christchurch will be the construction of a unique convergence of important public facilities in what will become the Justice and Emergency Services Precinct.

T

o be located on the block bordered by Lichfield, Colombo, Tuam and Durham Streets, the $305-million, threebuilding complex will bring together all justice and emergency services in one purpose-built, world-class precinct. Included will be the Ministry of Justice, the New Zealand Police, the Department of Corrections, St John Ambulance and the NZ Fire Service. Also located there will be the Dial 111 service for all emergencies. The 40,000sqm precinct will be the largest-ever multi-agency government project in New Zealand, employing about 1100 people, with 900 visitors every weekday. The main building contract was awarded recently to Fletcher Construction. At the peak of the two-year project, 400 to 500 people will be working on the site. The Ministry of Justice’s establishment manager, Justin Hygate, who is already located in temporary offices in Tuam Street, facing the project site, says he knows of no other services precinct like it. “It’s reasonably unique and will be much more efficient. It will ensure that the police and the courts are connected, enabling them to share custodial facilities,” says Justin.

This will provide a more integrated service delivery, with better support, more opportunities for intervention and improved justice outcomes. The precinct’s Justice Building will have 19 courtrooms, including the Maori Land Court, Youth Court, Family Courts, District Courts, High Court, Environment Court and specialist jurisdictions. The courtroom layouts are multijurisdictional and multi-purpose to provide operational and future adaptability of justice services. It will also include a youth-justice hub with a

Earlier court houses tend to be less welcoming than they should be. Parts of the Precinct will be available for use by community groups and others outside business hours,” says Justin. “The precinct is designed to welcome visitors, maximising natural light, outlook and reflecting the shared vision of open, transparent and accessible justice services.

“The public will be able to take a short cut through from Tuam Street to Ballantynes and even have a coffee along the way. On a sunny day, you will be able to sit in the central courtyard.” The first major public facility to be built in Christchurch by the Government since the earthquakes of 2010 and 2011, the precinct will also incorporate the Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management, as well as similar services by the Christchurch City Council and the Canterbury Group. Downer, the early-works contractor, has already completed the precinct’s groundimprovement work. This included the stabilisation of more than 25,000cum of soil with 3500cum of cement. The Justice Building will be completed in 2016, with the others finished soon after.

lack-clad warrior knights, brightly backdropped rock-scapes and mysterious sculptures make up Christchurch Art Gallery's latest exhibition, Rebels, Knights and Other Tomorrows. Christchurch-based collaborative duo Edwards + Johann present a vividly imagined installation of sculptures and large-scale photographs, laced with textures, tension and flashes of brilliant colour. The exhibition features the duo's Knight in the Wilderness series alongside The Accidental Rebels — images of rocks suspended against, or falling through, vivid colour fields. Also inhabiting the gallery spaces are the Probes — seven chaotically beautiful sculptures that rise up from the floor on stems created from salvaged organ pipes. Christchurch Art Gallery director Jenny Harper says the exhibition is one that gradually reveals a more playful side. In constructing the Knights, the artists combine theatre, ritual and role-play into a collaborative and creative process. Likening their partnership to a “delicate duelling”, Victoria Edwards and Ina Johann have worked together since 2007 in a range of media, including drawing, photography, installation, video and performance. They were recently among 10 artists selected for a juried exhibition celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Los Angeles Centre for Digital Art. Rebels, Knights and Other Tomorrows runs until 2 November on the first floor of 209 Tuam Street. Entry is free. Opening times: 10am–5pm, Monday to Friday, and 10am–4pm, Saturday and Sunday.

Graffiti busting

Christchurch has had a spruce up courtesy of BNZ's Closed for Good initiative when BNZ staff teamed up with the Christchurch Sunrise Rotary Club and Christchurch City Council to carry out a graffiti busting exercise across the city. BNZ Director Strategy and Business Performance Michelle van Gaalen says, “BNZ is proud to have had 400 pairs of hands working in the community in the Christchurch region, taking part in New Zealand's largest corporate volunteering day.” The Closed for Good initiative provided 41,000 hours of service across more than 460 projects nationwide, contributing the equivalent of over a million dollars to the communities BNZ staff work and live in. The Christchurch City Council spent $897,611.40 in 2013-14 removing graffiti in public places and this year to date the total bill is $532,451.20.

Cutting costs

uying and selling our homes are some of the most expensive endeavours we will partake in during our lifetimes. So it’s not surprising that an increasing number of Cantabrians have been opting to spend just 1% on their commission rates, as opposed to 3.95% and, according to Total Realty managing director Rachael Cone, cutting costs doesn’t mean cutting corners.

The Total Realty Team feedback we have received, with more than 96 percent of our clients rating the service they have received from our team as exceptional. “We’re all about cutting costs but not corners.” For more information on how Total Realty can save you thousands, phone the Christchurch office on (03) 940 9797, visit 2/680 Barbadoes Street, Edgeware or visit the website www.totalrealty.co.nz.

“More and more people have been recognising the benefit of listing with us,” she says. “Almost all of our agents have trained and worked within higher commission structure organisations, so we offer the exact same service, for just a fraction of the price.” Yes for almost a quarter of the price of traditional real estate companies, Total Realty can list and sell your home, from start to finish. Established in 2007, the real estate agency has saved clients more than $10 million in fees in the last 12 months alone and the demand for its services has seen Total Realty open offices in Nelson, Dunedin and Ashburton, with a new office underway for Rangiora.

ESTABLISHED IN 2007, THE REAL ESTATE AGENCY HAS SAVED CLIENTS MORE THAN $10 MILLION IN FEES IN THE LAST 12 MONTHS ALONE. But that doesn’t mean the firm is getting less results, in fact, latest statistics show “Total Realty agents sell more than four times the number of properties per month than the average of other agencies.” It’s all about getting the best of both worlds when it comes to marketing and selling your home, Rachael says. “We believe these homeowners deserve the maximum value from the sale of their property and because our agents sell so many homes, they don’t have to charge the earth for that service.” “By offering a 1% real estate option which maintains the high quality marketing service the 3.95% market boasts, it benefits everyone.” Every Total Realty client is asked to fill out a survey upon completion of their sale. “We have been blown away by the Metropol Sept 18, 2014 17

rtists from the Rangiora Photographic Society will be sharing their work through the groups’ annual exhibition, ‘The Magic of Light,’ at the Brick Mill Gallery in Waikuku. The exhibition will run over the weekend of Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 October, with the aim of transporting the viewer into the world of image, and that of the creator. Photography is all about light, with the literal translation of the word meaning to ‘paint with light,’ and that is precisely what the talented photographers who will be exhibiting their work do when creating their art. “We want the visitors to this exhibition to realise an emotional and intellectual experience through the diversity and quality of imagery on display and to leave with that lovely tingly feeling that you get when you have been inspired by the journey,” says Catherine Boyd from the Rangiora Photographic Society. “That is the ‘Magic of the Light’.” In excess of 80 prints will be displayed at the exhibition and are the work of 40 Canterbury photographers. A very wide range of photographic genres will be on show, each representing the photographer’s individual creative style and personality. The diversity of imagery includes Black and White, Street, Nature, Landscape and Portraiture.

“WE WANT THE VISITORS TO THIS EXHIBITION TO REALISE AN EMOTIONAL AND INTELLECTUAL EXPERIENCE THROUGH THE DIVERSITY AND QUALITY OF IMAGERY ON DISPLAY AND TO LEAVE WITH THAT LOVELY TINGLY FEELING THAT YOU GET WHEN YOU HAVE BEEN INSPIRED BY THE JOURNEY.”

The exhibition will also showcase the outstanding work of Rob Brydon who was last year’s recipient of the Dave Wethey Mentoring Award. Rob is characteristically modest about his work but each piece is the product of a fastidious attention to detail. Rob joined the group in 2008, and has a passion for taking photos of nature, as well as sharing his knowledge with other photographers. The Rangiora Photographic Society was formed over 60 years ago by a group of enthusiastic people with a common interest in photography, and a desire to share their knowledge and experience. With over 160 photographers in the group, they represent a range of ages and skills from all over North Canterbury, coming together twice a month in Rangiora. While most in the group make use of digital technology there are also those who like to mix this with more traditional film or transparency. The society has an active programme which continually challenges its members, from engaging speakers to field trips, as well as competitions and informative tutorials and workshops. Their field trips include weekend visits to destinations such as Moeraki in North Otago, with 37 of the group journeying south for their mid-winter excursion.

“THE EXHIBITION AS A WHOLE IS A CELEBRATION OF THE PHOTOGRAPHIC ACHIEVEMENTS OF INDIVIDUALS WHO WISH TO SHARE THE MAGIC OF LIGHT, TO IGNITE AN INSPIRATION THAT ENERGISES YOUR SPIRITS AND LEAVES YOU VISUALLY SPELLBOUND.”

Their annual exhibition offers a chance for the community to see some of the best of their work, to share a celebration of photographic art and meet with many of the exhibiting photographers. “The exhibition as a whole is a celebration of the photographic achievements of individuals who wish to share the magic of light, to ignite an inspiration that energises your spirits and leaves you visually spellbound,” says Catherine. As usual, Zambesi didn't disappoint. Zambesi's signature style and amazing show production is always a highlight of the week. After a long day they delivered another complete collection.

2014 welcomed Wendy Jerard and her collection 'Out of the Shadows' from her line 'Frances Jerard'. The collection boasted bold prints, frills, and bright colours, with all things inbetween, inspiring women to have no limits when it comes to fashion.

As usual guests at COOP's show weren't disappointed - the fashion heavyweight putting on another stellar performance, bringing a refreshing pop of colour by showcasing a variety of eye-catching pop up art prints. The show had multiple recurring elements of messy hair, sneakers and khaki, grey and yellow prints.

Kate Sylvester made a welcome return to NZFW with a beautifully constructed collection presented in front of a packed showroom and a captive audience. Kate is celebrating her 21st birthday, and after her recent show it is clear to all why she obtained such an admirable milestone.

New Generation kicked off in an upbeat fashion with the introduction of first time fashion week designer, Amber Whitecliffe. Showcasing her 'Mrs Pinto-Summer 2014/15' collection, a line inspired by floral patterns and the colour red. The collection is a result of Portuguese inspiration, emphasising elements of the designer's newlywed life.

Annah Stretton is more than just a fashion label, and once again, she put on more than just a fashion show. Annah's new collection was full of Cleopatra like wigs, and bold colours, leaving women feeling brave and empowered. The collection boasted palettes of bright orange and hot pink, that were balanced out by lots of black and pastel rose. Polka dots on polka dots, and with big bows also making an appearance, Annah has definitely inspired women to feel confident in their lives through fashion.

Shown at the Huffer studio on Queen St, Huffer debuted their new line aptly named 'Aim' by Aimee McFarlane. The shows informal vibe, with coffee, Veuve Clicquot and a performance from 'WATERCOLOURS' provided the backdrop for Huffers' debut line which will be available in stores in November.

Trelise's highly anticipated showcase certainly didn't disappoint. The industry heavyweight delivering a range of styles, from American Indian inspired, to bold prints and bohemian designs – the show had it all. Flowers, tassels and sky high boots made several appearances throughout the show, guaranteed trends set straight from the catwalk.

Think eye-catching designs, floral prints and bold colours, all with a feminine twist.

INHALE APPAREL

Inhale Apparel Inhale brought an impressive debut to NZFW, a perfectly balanced collection of high fashion and street wear. Turquoise was a dominant shade in most pieces, particularly on cute lace dresses. Inhale Apparel's simple and wearable clothing left a lasting impression as a definite brand to watch.

The first model looked effortless but polished, while the crowd stared with awe at the work of art and waited for more to follow.

An off-site show saw Stolen Girlfriends Club take fashion to Western Springs Speedway. Their show, The Guilty Ones, mixed burning rubber with their unmistakable street fashion.

The designs showcased simplicity and modernity while focusing on tailoring, craftsmanship, and precise cuts. This year, Juliette Hogan shows us why she is the master of structured feminine aesthetics and excites us with elements of sheers and patterns throughout the collection.

After 15 years Hailwood never fails to put on a phenomenal show, with this year being no exception. His designs, which ranged from street wear ponchos through to stunning sequined evening dresses, certainly gave his audience something to talk about. One of the most standout pieces would have to be the reinvention of his blue velvet dress. Hailwood has certainly not failed to deliver yet another inspiring NZFW show!

ith the knowledge and vision of a Jedi Master, Designer Margarita Robertson infuses the range with a new energy that fashions its own world, and, like ‘the force’ itself, should long ‘be with you’. Strong diamond and prism prints feature this season, adorning dresses, skirts and slips like shafts of refracted lightsaber beams amidst a colour palette of storm, indigo, dusk, orange, red, grey and black. Signature fabrics such as viscose crepe and georgette are mixed with cotton linens, gingham, printed nylon and cotton mesh. Pesky, wayward boyfriends will simply be told to “Stay on the Leader.” Straight up, no nonsense, this is your command. It is indeed a new episode for Robertson and the crew but No*Sense is not really an empire striking back, but rather the return of the classic Nom*d monster. This collection represents a prequel to the future, a new design order befitting spring/summer 2014/15. As Princess Leia extracts herself from Hans Solo’s embrace in The Empire Strikes Back, Solo suggests she should not get too excited: “Captain, being held by you isn’t quite enough to get me excited,” she coyly replies. No, we’ll leave that to Nom*d’s No*Sense SS 14/15 collection.

ace Value Cosmetic Medical Clinic is a provider of high-quality facial rejuvenation care. Clinic physician Dr Philip Frost takes a holistic approach, noting that often the first step to a comprehensive skin rejuvenation treatment plan is a review of the first principles including the client’s current at home skincare regime.

Very often, to maximise benefits of rejuvenating clinic based treatments, Dr Frost will work with clients to establish an appropriate cosmeceutical programme to ensure results are optimised and sustained over time. “It is easy to be confused by the many offerings and promises of products on the market, and I see my role as simplifying clients’ skincare range to those which are most effective for their individual needs.” Dr Frost adds, “Claims of products bought over the counter being able to bring about significant difference in the skin in 10 – 14 days are usually too good to be true”. Instead, Face Value stock medical grade products that have been clinically proven to improve skin hydration, texture, pigmentation and volume over a gradual time period with results that will be sustainable. It has to be simple, and it has to be used regularly to be effective.

He recommends clients take note of the following basics: A Use a skin cleanser that will not strip the skin of its natural oils. Use an exfoliant scrub to remove the dead skin cells, up to three times a week. B Use vitamins A, B and C, applied topically, to improve skin collagen support, reduce pigmentation, and reduce photoageing. C Apply a good sunblock every day, all year round. D Use a hydrating moisturiser regularly. Visit Dr Frost at Face Value, 363 Papanui Road, Merivale, for all your non-surgical cosmetic needs. Appearance medicine

a fine art T

he field of Appearance Medicine is a very artistic area of medicine as it blends knowing the science behind ageing and facial structure, and having an aesthetic eye to know where the smallest improvements will have the most impact. This can range from improving someone’s skin texture and appearance to Botox® and dermal fillers.

It’s important to stay up-to-date with what’s available and what’s happening globally. To do this Dr Brigid Lee and Denise Prosser have just attended the annual New Zealand Society of Cosmetic Medicine conference in Queenstown, which was attended by delegates from around the world. The good news is that Brigid and Denise found that they were already doing all the latest techniques and treatments that were discussed and demonstrated! Dr Lee said there were many interesting presentations and facts, such as Botox® helping to improve mood by making someone look less cross and grumpy and therefore making them feel more positive and happy when they looked at themselves, and also by making their interactions with others more positive (as they didn’t look so grumpy) which led to an overall improvement in mood.

Finally the best in medical level skincare is of the upmost importance to keep the skin in perfect condition. The Skin Rejuvenation Clinic has several ranges of ‘doctor only’ skincare, and once your skin has been fully assessed a regime tailored for your skin’s needs can be recommended. The Skin Rejuvenation Clinic can help with all your skin’s needs so give them a call on (03) 351 3241.

Dr Lee said there were many interesting presentations and facts, such as Botox® helping to improve mood by making someone look less cross and grumpy and therefore making them feel more positive and happy. One of the presenters described ageing as “like a chronic wound that doesn’t completely heal”. So it makes sense that any treatment that stimulates the cellular growth factors that help with wound healing will also help with reversing ageing. Denise uses a Dermapen® to make thousands of tiny holes (or wounds) all over the skin of the face which stimulates the body’s own natural healing cascade to stimulate new collagen production which leads to younger, healthier looking skin. IPL (intense pulsed light) is another natural treatment that uses light to clear the skin of sun-damage (little brown spots) and broken blood vessels to leave the skin looking clearer and youthful. IPL also puts heat into the deeper dermis which once again stimulates the healing cascade to promote collagen production and tighten the skin. Metropol Sept 18, 2014 35

Finding time The benefits of a cardio vascular workout are well known, but the convenience of having a professional piece of equipment at home, can't be overlooked. Christchurch doesn't have the kindest climate, which can make it hard to motivate yourself to go for that run or walk, especially in the dark. Hiring your own equipment means you will no longer have to leave the warmth and security of home or brave the cold.

Balance. The ultimate goal. Among the relentless challenges of everyday life it can be hard to achieve, not only for ourselves but for our family as a whole. Fitness at Home is a refreshingly simple concept, making it easier for people to achieve balance on their own terms.

K

eep fit in the comfort and privacy of your own home with professional, quality assured equipment hire. The locally owned and operated family business is run by Leanne and Mark Glasson, who are often assisted by their two young children. The busy couple are not elite physical trainers, just like their customers they look at incorporating fitness into their daily routine. All of the fitness equipment for hire is modern, reliable and maintained to the highest standard. The company hires treadmills, concept rowing machines, cross-trainers, exercycles, spin bikes and abdominal machines. "I can relate to my customers, especially women, who struggle to find time for themselves, but even if you just have 20 minutes, it's 20 minutes time-out for you, which makes you feel better about yourself."

THE COMPANY HIRES TREADMILLS, CONCEPT ROWING MACHINES, CROSS-TRAINERS, EXERCYCLES, SPIN BIKES AND ABDOMINAL MACHINES. With many gyms closing after the earthquakes, facilities have been overcrowded and often you end up queuing to use the machine you want. When going to the gym you need to have the correct gear with the added pressure of having to look somewhat presentable. On top of that, just getting there and back takes up your precious time. At Fitness at Home, they keep it simple. "Life is hectic enough without having to choose a gym, a routine, an outfit and new trainers. Get the equipment you want, when you want it," they encourage.

Expert care for troubling veins Aching, swollen, painful legs, bulging veins and ugly brown stains are all common symptoms of varicose veins. For some it may be discomfort that they have endured for years, and with summer around the corner now is the time to seek specialist advice. preferred method, radiofrequency ablation, a procedure previously known as VNUS Closure and currently as Venefit. Venefit, an established, evidence-based but relatively new treatment for varicose veins, has been available in Europe and the United States since early 2006 with Peter becoming the first clinician to perform the procedure in East and West Sussex in the UK, and much more recently a first for Christchurch. “The treatment involves a segmental ablation technique, performed under local anaesthetic as a walk in walk out procedure. A catheter is first inserted via a small incision in the skin, and guided into the correct position, using ultrasound imaging, where the tip of the catheter delivers radiofrequency energy,” says Peter. “This energy heats and seals the vein taking only 20 seconds to treat seven centimeters at a time. As the catheter heats a constant length of vein at a constant temperature for a constant time it produces constant results.” Peter sees this consistency as key to reproducible, great results time after time. “Not only do we see consistent results with the Venefit procedure but there is less bruising and less pain when compared to other techniques,” Peter says. “Randomised controlled trials support the decrease in short

How to look better

IN ONE HOUR F

rom our hair and skin to our clothing and shoes, our physical appearances are always under scrutiny. Whether it’s an interview for your dream job or a first date, public speaking or getting married, first impressions really do count. Our smile is one of our greatest attributes and one with the power to make or break that first meeting. Fortunately, improving your smile is now easier and more accessible than ever before with Christchurch’s very own Sparklewhite. Being the largest teeth whitening company in New Zealand, Sparklewhite is all about adding the sparkle back to your teeth. Local operator Charmaine McFarlane – featured in the before and after photos – knows first-hand just how significant a new smile can be after severe antibiotic staining took her sparkle away. “Off the shelf home whitening kits are simply not designed to be on the teeth for long enough, nor are they strong enough to absorb deep into the pores,” Charmaine says. “Whether you have a poor diet, sensitive teeth, caps, crowns or veneers, we can customise a teeth whitening solution for you.” It’s as easy as booking in a relaxing 60 minute appointment. During this appointment, the LED laser light activates the gel into the tooth’s enamel through pores, much like those in our skin. “Over the years stains absorb into the pores building up and embedding deep into the tooth and because stains are embedded into the pores, it’s not a matter of being able to just brush them off,” Charmaine says. Although caps and crowns don’t have these

More men are enjoying the benefits of whiter teeth and, with the accessibility of Sparklewhite, gift vouchers make a great option for that hard to buy for person. “It’s incredible to see people feel better about themselves, get their confidence back and get that sparkle back into their smile.” “It’s one of the only ways to look more appealing in just an hour,” Charmaine laughs. Reassurance of

specialist obstetric care Being pregnant is a life changing event and becoming a parent is one of our most significant milestones. But there's a lot to learn in the nine months before your child is born, so the reassurance of obstetrics professionals is always important.

C

hristchurch Obstetrics Associates is a well established practice of specialists with the experience and empathy to provide you with the best delivery and maternal care. The private practice charges a set fee for the pregnancy which incorporates all visits to the doctor, the delivery and post natal care. The set fee is all-inclusive regardless of any complications that occur during the pregnancy or the method of delivery and some insurance policies now cover some aspects of maternity care. Alternatively patients can also choose a private midwife funded by the government if they wish. Christchurch Obstetrics Associates can provide a list of experienced independent midwives they work with regularly and your maternity care is shared with alternate visits to the midwife and the specialist. Currently there are four doctors in the practice as well as administrative staff, creating a friendly supportive team for their patients. “Some pregnant women come here right from the start because they prefer complete specialist care, some patients come under our care because of problems identified in a previous pregnancy, or they may be referred here due to potential problems with their pregnancy,” says Clinic Manager Helen Conaghan. All patients are warmly welcomed and encouraged to meet each specialist during their various ante natal visits. “So prior to delivery, you will have met the doctor who will manage your labour and birth,” says Helen. Ante natal clinics operate four days a week

and a variety of appointment times are available to patients and their partners. The familyfriendly practice also welcomes children accompanying you to doctors' visits if you wish. Visits are usually monthly up to 28 weeks of the pregnancy, fortnightly from 28 to 36 weeks and then weekly until delivery. Regular visits allow the specialists to monitor your health and the healthy progress of your baby, provide information, answer your questions and

t looks very likely that a brand new Coriander’s – bigger and better than before – will be opening its doors on St Asaph St in Central Christchurch later this year. This new Coriander’s will offer the same popular menu, but with new dishes added both to extend the variety, and meet the needs of those passing through for a movie or other entertainment. Why such phenomenal growth? For a start owner Amardeep Singh makes absolutely sure that the quality of each restaurant is paralleled in the others, giving consistency and value for money. This is reflected not only in the standard of the food and the comfort of the surroundings, but in the customer service provided. “Good food, good service and value for money,” says Amar. “We are always welcoming and we do not compromise on our food.” We access the restaurant’s menu online from Edgeware, and Amar explains that while 40% 50% of meals produced are takeaways, around a third of all takeways are ordered online. You can see an image of your preferred dish as well as its description. One of the benefits is that you score a 10% discount on pick up. Cuisine at Coriander’s is the popular North Indian style with smokey tandoori dishes, rich distinctive gravies, a variety of vegetarian and gluten-free dishes, a variety of breads and lamb, chicken and fish cooked a number of different ways.

The menu is varied and contains not only favourites such as Lamb Rogan Josh and Butter Chicken but signature dishes such as Lamb Posht, Balti Dansak and Chicken Jalfrezee which are all popular dishes created by Coriander’s own chefs. “We serve dishes you will not find in other Indian restaurants,” Amar says proudly. Food in all Coriander’s restaurants is regularly

checked for both quality and consistency and the menus are the same throughout. “I personally insist on this,” says Amar. “We do not keep food overnight – every day it is prepared from fresh ingredients.” New chefs are trained with those who have been here a while, so that the same high standards are constantly upheld.

ut regulars and those looking for a certain famous coffee house need not panic. Look closer and the small print reads ‘Dining and Coffee House’. Yes, it’s a simple name change and the team behind the Coffee House are still on site, producing the fine food and beverages that has made it famous for almost 20 years. “While our premises have grown and the name has changed we’re the same team and our regulars can expect the same superb fare and service,” say co-owners Dave McLoughlin and Ben Dunkin. The new name suits this clever and probably unique renovation that joins the two historic buildings so they can be used as a single entity while retaining the integrity and identity of both. “We wanted to retain a slice of old Christchurch and our landlady was very supportive. She selected Athfield Architects to design and manage the complicated renovation,” says Dave. “We respect these old buildings and feel very fortunate to function out of them.” While the exteriors with their charming verandas are largely original, internally the buildings are virtually new, and both have been

completely strengthened. A single shared entrance now joins the two-storied buildings. In both villas the ground floor is a casual cafe area, while upstairs is dedicated to more formal dining and functions. The Yellow Villa’s upstairs dining area is now accessible from the Blue Villa. It seats about 20 and has refurbished timber flooring and an elegant bay window. “It gives us three separate function rooms, which are proving very popular,” Dave says. Downstairs, the Yellow Villa has been transformed into a new cafe bar area. As with the Blue Villa, as much of the old has been retained as much as possible to keep that unique Victorian ambience. The old ceiling roses have been

reinstalled and, adding a touch of nostalgia, the original Coffee House chairs and tables are back. New is a private but spacious nook, al fresco seating at the rear of the building, and an outdoor fire. A state of the art bar offers craft beers and a new extensive wine and cocktail menu. “As in the past, we are a food focused business and that’s what sets us apart from many of the other establishments. We’ve won the Beef and Lamb award for two consecutive years,” says Dave. Check out the exciting changes to this old favourite, book your private function or evening meal, by contacting The Villas on (03) 365 6066. ‘Like’ them on Facebook or visit www.thevillas.co.nz.

he flavours of Asia, Thai, Malay, Indian, Chinese and Nonya - they all transport us away to another place. For Jackie Hendricks they are a reminder of home, of Bangkok where she was born and Malaysia where she grew up. It is these tastes that Jackie is recreating in her new restaurant, Fusion at the Asiatique in Sydenham, where she will be sharing her traditional recipes with a modern twist. In her kitchen sits a large bowl of galangal and lemongrass, dried chillies are soaking nearby and coriander seeds sit ready to be toasted. “As a child we helped pound curry paste and squeeze coconut milk,” she says, with many of dishes based on traditional recipes from her grandmother, including the aromatic flavours of Nonya food from the Peranakan people. Jackie has years of experience with restaurants and hospitality in both Thailand and New Zealand. She and her Japanese chef will be working in the open kitchen of the restaurant to create genuinely authentic cuisine with a modern twist. “In a dish there is history, culture and geography,” Jackie says, with this knowledge extending to how and when dishes should be created and how they should be served. “It’s about using your heart and soul and passion –they’re the most important ingredients in a good dish.” Owner Jackie Hendricks

Mary's mixologist

Richard Uttley, Food & Beverage Manager at the Rydges Latimer reveals the secrets behind making a delicious 23 Skidoo…

How to make a 23 Skiddoo 23 skiddoo is an American phrase popularised during the early 20th century, becoming popular during the 1920s. It generally refers to leaving quickly, being forced to leave quickly by someone else, or "getting out while the getting's good”. I love gin. It is my drink of choice. I’ve noticed that people either love it or hate it. All too often I order a gin drink and the person I’m with makes a gross face. It must be something about the juniper berries that reminds people of the holidays. Well, what better time is there to drink a liquor that smells like Christmas than at a holiday party?

Glassware There are lots of options here, serve over ice in a rocks glass, or a nice large champagne flute, my personal favourite is the Luigi Bormioli Magnifico available from Total Food Equipment.

Recipe 15ml Beefeater gin 7ml St Germain Elderflower Liqueur or Elderflower cordial 5ml Thyme Syrup Champagne or sparkling wine Sprig of thyme Add all ingredients to Champagne flute, top with bubbles and garnish with a sprig of thyme.

Thyme Syrup recipe 1 cup sugar 1 cup water 1 small bunch of fresh thyme leaves Bring thyme, sugar, and water to a simmer in a small heavy saucepan over medium-low heat, stirring until sugar has dissolved, then gently simmer, until liquid has reduced by half. Strain through a sieve, cool to room temperature. Refrigerate once cool. Bloody Mary’s is now online so check out www.bloodymarys.co.nz where they will be publishing all the Mary’s Mixologist recipes on their site for easy reference.

“IT’S ABOUT USING YOUR HEART AND SOUL AND PASSION –THEY’RE THE MOST IMPORTANT INGREDIENTS IN A GOOD DISH.” A slice of the menu includes traditional dishes such as roast duck curry with lychees and grapes, stewed pork hock, and butter chicken at its best, with the menu changing, dependent on the fresh seasonal ingredients available. The restaurant has a fresh contemporary feel, from the zebra print wallpaper to the black chandelier. It features a long communal table, a few smaller tables, and an outdoor courtyard, where diners will have the option of cooking their own satay come summer. The courtyard and restaurant will be available for Christmas and corporate functions, with the restaurant also offering corporate platters with tastes from around the world. Open from 9.30am, Fusion at the Asiatique have cabinet food available for lunch, and takeaways, with selections such as Thai rice falafel adding an Asian twist. Visit Fusion at the Asiatique on Facebook, or give them a call on 365 0163 to make a booking. Metropol Sept,4 2014 51

“IT’S A SOPHISTICATED AND EXCITING COCKTAIL LOUNGE FOR DISCERNING PEOPLE WHO LIKE THE GOOD THINGS IN LIFE.”

SLINKY, SEXY

social lounging When the working week is drawing to a close and the weekend beckons (that’s about Wednesday) consider sashaying off to Sydenham’s Dragon’s Den Social Lounge.

T

he newly opened venue for ‘real men and better women’, is adding a new dimension to the city nightlife. Sandwiched between The Colombo and Burgers & Beers, it’s the latest venture of think-outside-the-square duo Andrew Brown and Tama Haas who brought us the eponymous burger-beer hangouts. The den is a whole new concept. “It’s a sophisticated and exciting cocktail lounge for discerning people who like the good things in life,” explains Andrew. Think dragon’s dens and you get images of caves, glittering treasures, and beautiful damsels, and Swiss designer David Frei has created a similarly moody mystique for DDSL. ‘The bar’ is dark, slinky and sexy, with eclectic artworks and exotic red lighting. “But this won’t be static,” promises Andrew. “Things will be happening all the time.” Open the back door and you enter ‘the den’. Intimate and funky, it’s a little bit vintage with a serving of plush; recycled stained glass windows, quirky old fire places, and tropical plants. The ideal space to practise the art of relaxed social lounging.

Opening from 5pm till late, Wednesday to Sunday, The Dragon’s Den is a place where girls can dress up and feel welcome. (The boys are welcome too of course, but not in their fluoros, please). Two expert bartenders conjure up clever cocktails, serve spirits from the bar’s extensive range, and pour boutique beers and select wines. The bar menu is stylish. Chef Andrew (ex executive chef at The George) enjoys the challenge of creating dishes to complement the meticulously crafted cocktails.

“There’s a sprinkling of Asian influence with a touch of American bar food. Our popcorn is served with Japanese flavours like miso butter. We serve small plates so two people can enjoy three or four plates, or huge platters for groups, and the chef is putting food out all night.” All this, plus entertainment, makes the swanky new early opening night spot unique. “We want it to be an experience, exciting but approachable,” Andrew says. Bring it on!

How to attain a premium price Mary Turnbull is among the elite within the world of real estate. She holds international titles, as well as being rated as Harcourts 5th top agent in New Zealand 2013 - 2014.

S

he represents the high performing office of Harcourts Gold Papanui, which gained first place last year out of 783 offices world-wide. Mary leads a proficient team including a full-time personal assistant and two buyers’ agents who specialise in finding the right properties for their clients. Together they provide a robust and successful all-round service. With ten years of experience in the industry Mary has the skills and knowledge to not only get results but get the best results. It doesn't just happen by chance, but her strategies are no secret. Being a firm believer in the power of auctions, Mary observes that the pressure situation entices buyers to put their best foot forward. "Auction is the best way to attain the premium price. Being open and transparent, bidders gain confidence from others bidding." The auction process is far less arduous for sellers, as it involves just over three weeks of intensive advertising before going to auction. After which, it is all done and dusted. Having already sold 33 houses through auction this year, and with many more listed, Mary views other avenues as being more time consuming as it often involves conditions of purchase, dragging the process on. Mary also believes in the power of presentation and encourages sellers to consider staging their homes, hiring furniture

“MY SIMPLE PHILOSOPHY FOR SUCCESS IS DOING THE RIGHT THING BY MY CLIENTS EACH AND EVERY TIME” to create a warm and stylish interior. "The gardens have to be manicured, the inside has to shine, people are analysing its potential as their home." Springtime traditionally sees more property coming onto the market providing more choice, but like the weather, it is changeable. In talking with Mary, it is clear she has an acute understanding of the real estate climate in Christchurch. "Certain properties continue to attract a considerable interest and the ‘upper price point’ of the market has been performing well. There appears to be more first home buyers back in the market now with banks easing restrictions on home loan ratios." The newly refurbished office is looking fabulous, reflecting the high energy and professionalism of Mary and her team. If you are selling a property, contact Mary for an appraisal. With $250 million in settled sales, the results speak for themselves. For more information phone (03) 352 6166

Professionals in hill builds & challenging sites Sometimes when we look out at burgeoning residential developments we often see a sea of similarity – even mediocrity. It is refreshing to see homes that are unique, intriguing and clearly with a great deal of forethought and planning behind their construction.

S

ome houses pose a challenge to builders – the aspect, the terrain, the access. Hill sites are always a little more demanding, but when finished, can look magnificent. This is where well-known building company ConStruct Developments steps up to the mark. This experienced team specialises in architectural hill homes where the environment is demanding. As they say, “client expectations and architectural plans must merge seamlessly to create a quality home reflective of the vision.” A long established and respected company in this area, ConStruct Developments’ ability to constantly communicate with all parties involved, especially the home owners, as the dream becomes a reality, is the key to a stressfree build in what is referred to in the trade as ‘difficult builds’. ConStruct Developments Limited accurately describes itself as an enthusiastic, hardworking family-based team with over 40 years’ experience. Having an extensive portfolio of new homes, alterations and additions, it thrives on a challenge, particularly in architectural hill

homes and difficult building projects. Building client communication has been paramount to its business success. Your initial meeting will very likely be with owners Mark and Jenny Everitt, to run through planning and design, and you will meet with the leaders of the team responsible for your unique home creation. At this meeting all aspects of the project will be clarified: Ÿ Planning, including consents Ÿ Any specific requirements of your section Ÿ Your specific build requirements Ÿ Your unique vision for your residential building Ÿ The timeframe of your building project Ÿ The timeframe of regular updates that will be provided Christchurch folk will have often driven past homes beautifully constructed by ConStruct Developments – in places such as Clifton Hill and Governors Bay, but the company works in other areas throughout the South Island as well. A lot goes into these challenging projects, but core to the process is the close link with home owners, the one-on-one

Designing an eclectic look Would you like to break out of your design box and try something new? Maybe it's time to experiment with an eclectic look. Here are some tips to pull off an eclectic style that works. Play - Give yourself permission to go outside of your comfort zone and see what works. Sometimes trial and error leads to brilliant discoveries. Harmony - Find a common element that you can carry throughout the room. Whether it's a texture, colour, or scale - you can create harmony by finding something in common to display in various pieces. Sometimes choosing the right decorative cushions can be just what you need to make uncommon items feel related. Together art and accessories can be used to help unify the space.

Focal point - Pull your design together by having a focal point such as a piece of artwork or a major furniture piece that draws your eye to it when you enter the room. For example a vignette of vases at varying sizes, heights and colours can add a striking focus point to a room.

W

hy it works: When it's done well, eclectic decorating shows your confidence in your own style yet still adheres to the fundamentals of great interior design. You don't have to choose between profiles or periods; there's room for a range of all your favourites. Plus, isn't it fun to feel like you're getting away with something different? First let's take a look at what eclectic is not. It's not a random gathering of furniture, art, and design elements with no rhyme or reason. It is a fun, imaginative grouping of unrelated style furnishings that are pulled together by scale, colour, and/or theme. If you are tired of boring dĂŠcor that looks the same, then an eclectic style may be just the thing to showcase your unique expression and personality in your home. Here are some decorating rules to help you create an eclectic look:

FURNITURE CAN BE PULLED FROM VARIOUS STYLES AS YOU TELL A VISUAL STORY WITH A THEME. Colour - Let your imagination soar as you expand your palette. Everything does not have to be in a one or two colour scheme. An inspirational piece can serve as a guide to couple vivid colours together for an exciting visual display.

why the long fac e?

ived I’ve just reorcekSafe W e g a hu fine!

Be a mixologist - Dare to match stripes and floral, place soft fuzzy pillows next to a rough bristly lamp shade, try luxurious silks next to worn leather. Let fabric, texture, and patterns be notes in the visual symphony you are creating. Theme - Furniture can be pulled from various styles as you tell a visual story with a theme. Find an emotional feeling you want to evoke. Use the elements of the room to make a big statement that paints a picture. Rule of three - In design it's smart to limit the amount of varying elements to three. Use no more than three unique colours, textures, styles. Personality - Make the room be a direct expression of something authentic for you.

Flooring that finishes a home It’s the finishing touches to any house that can transform it into a home. Flooring is one of these, with the team at Dominion Flooring working with home owners across Canterbury to provide a range of top quality flooring options.

O

ne such home in Christchurch has recently had work completed by Dominion Flooring. The owners decided to install Ekowood pre-engineered timber throughout all the living areas, study and art studio, and a combination of timber and carpet in their entrance hallway. Ekowood is a new generation of engineered hard wood surfaces, sourced from species of hardwoods from across the globe – Europe, North America and Australia, tropical hardwoods from South East Asia, and exotic varieties from Africa and South America, as well as oak, maple and walnut. “In the entrance hallway, the client has chosen to have a hallway runner in carpet, framed by the timber which creates a unique and striking entrance,” says Alex Ward from Dominion Flooring. “I personally am really excited to see the job finished.” From Dominion’s wide range of carpets, including Godfrey Hirst, Irvine and Feltex, the clients have chosen a 100% wool chunky loop pile carpet from Cavalier Bremworth. Alex has worked with the clients throughout the whole process, meeting them on-site multiple times to discuss different options and to finalise small touches such as the colour of trims and the border widths. This has included a visit from Dominion’s installer to discuss with the clients how the full installation will be carried out. The flooring was installed over a few days, with the concrete slab tested for moisture and then sealed prior to any work beginning. Dominion Flooring has a long history with Christchurch, as a family run business for three generations. They are able to provide their clients with a wide selection of quality products, which also include carpet tiles, laminate flooring, vinyl and polished concrete, with all work backed by a fully guaranteed installation service. Give the team a call on (03) 366 0559 or visit Dominion Flooring, beneath the large Drysdale ram at 60 Durham Street, for a consultation.

“IN THE ENTRANCE HALLWAY, THE CLIENT HAS CHOSEN TO HAVE A HALLWAY RUNNER IN CARPET, FRAMED BY THE TIMBER WHICH CREATES A UNIQUE AND STRIKING ENTRANCE.”

Ways to maximise S

mall homes are making a comeback. Ignored for years in favour of larger homes, many homebuyers are now looking for smaller, simpler housing choices. Part of this is due to land restrictions. Part of this is due to a rise in concern for the environment. Smaller houses generally require fewer materials to build, use fewer resources over the life of the home and have a smaller footprint. Part of it is a desire for smaller homes and simpler living. Many empty nesters, young couples, singles and first homebuyers don't need or want large homes. With the rise in demand for small homes, builders and decorators have come up with many ways to maximise space, ensuring homeowners have a house that meets their needs, no matter its size. Some small homes feel much larger than others, even if they cover the same amount of space. Houses that seem larger tend to have a few things in common, all of which make the best use of the square footage available. Some simply trick the eye into thinking an area is larger than it is; others enhance the functionality of the house.

space High ceilings make a room appear larger than it really is. The height draws the eye up, taking attention away from the dimensions of the room. The effect is heightened when combined with light-coloured walls.

Open floor plans lack the walls that can cause a home to appear smaller and more closed in. Looking out upon a large open space automatically makes an area seem larger than it really is. Furniture use, size and placement can affect the feel too. Large pieces can make the entire area feel like one big room, whereas smaller pieces, situated so as to break up the living areas into different functions, can give the illusion of several rooms in one area.

Windows and mirrors: Windows provide a view to the outside and let in more natural light, both of which can make the room seem larger than it is. Keep window treatments light and simple. Heavy curtains will make the entire room feel heavy, while sheer curtains that blend with the walls will recede but still let light in. Blinds and shades are also good choices that block out light but are neat and streamlined. Position mirrors on walls that are opposite windows to reflect more natural light and extend the view of what is outside. Built-in storage remedies: Instead of a dresser in the bedroom, create a custom closet solution that provides shelves, drawers and a shoe rack. Save space in the kitchen by adding a benchtop and bar stools as an eating area. Pullout drawers and cabinets ensure you can access every bit of the storage spots available to you.

Y

es, much like the fashionable finds of the runway, we are seduced by the latest looks when it comes to our home décor, and this season’s design trends are all about creating dramatic impact from simplicity. We’ve been hit by a wave of industrial chic this season. It’s all about aged woods and worn textures mixed with forged metals, from the warmth of gold, brass and copper accents to cool chrome, nickel and steel. Pastels and soft greys have been modernised by minerals and metals, and moody romantic tones of deep navy, jade and emerald are also making a strong appearance. When it comes to trends, it’s important not to get caught in a trap, explains Sandalwood Design owner and designer Fiona Renton. “It’s all about taking a trend and customising it; making it yours.” Instead of the big bold patterns trending in wallpapers, play up the textures against one strong colour, Fiona says. “This enables you to personalise the space by putting your art back on the wall. Design is a process; it’s not about grabbing the first on trend item you see.”

Chandeliers bling for your home

C

handeliers have been a very important part of the homes of many people. They have made a huge difference in how houses look, and have been going strong since the late 17th century. Recent history is witness to the change in the way that chandeliers are perceived. What was used once as a way of lighting a home is now thought of in terms of fashion. A variety of chandeliers have come onto the market in the last few decades that have transformed the whole idea of lighting in houses. A wide range of chandeliers both contemporary and conventional are available that have been made with extreme craftsmanship. These include elaborate crystal chandeliers and sleek, designer modern lights. Choosing a chandelier that matches your home will not only make your home look customised to your taste and choice but also make the home look well in-sync with each element. Matching the decor with your

Chandeliers have made a huge difference in how houses look, and have been going strong since the late 17th century.

chandelier becomes important especially when you are choosing a look that is extreme. For instance, if you are choosing a look that is edgy, clean and sharp then going for something that is very elaborate will make the chandelier look out of place, on the other hand if you choose the same chandelier for a room that is more traditional or eclectically decorated with things that speak of comfortable surroundings the same elaborate, perhaps crystal, chandelier will fit right in. Making sure that you choose the right

chandelier for your home will help you achieve what is perhaps the most important thing, balance. A well balanced house with the right textures and colours is what everyone aims at, and this can be achieved by getting one step closer at a time. While other factors are essential, the lighting of the room too makes a bigger difference than you would have thought. So get down and do your research if you want a chandelier that will work just perfectly for your home. It will change the entire ambience to something more magical than ever!

OUT THERE DOING IT… New Zealand, with its varied and spacious outdoors, teeming wildlife and moderate climate, is quite a paradise for those of us who enjoy hunting, fishing and outdoor sport, even if it is just tramping and camping.

H

unting & Fishing – Christchurch City, centrally located at 575 Colombo St, along with Hunting & Fishing – North Canterbury on Flaxton Road in Rangiora, and Hunting & Fishing – Ballingers at Tower Junction, are just three of 35 stores in New Zealand (there has been a store in Christchurch for 50 years), which provide all of your needs if you plan to get away in the great outdoors. And ‘plan’ is the operative word, for you need all the right gear, in tiptop condition so that instead of wondering if you have the right bait, whether your reel is in good working order, if your scope is still accurate, you can concentrate on enjoying your sport. The three stores have all the bases covered and work together to share expertise.

HUNTING & FISHING STORES ARE LIKE ALADDIN’S CAVES OF EQUIPMENT.

The strength of the ‘Hunting & Fishing New Zealand’ brand is huge within the industry and the most recognised brand in the market with its buying power, marketing and product ranges. Hunting & Fishing stores are like Aladdin’s Caves of equipment. Hunting? They stock New Zealand's best range of hunting gear including firearms, archery and crossbows, hunting accessories, and optics. Several brands and models are exclusive; some are factory direct imports. Fishing? They have a huge range of

saltwater and freshwater fishing rods, reels and accessories, including eyewear and cooking equipment. Diving? You have access to all the right equipment and hands-on advice. Tramping/camping? As it says on their website, “From pohutukawa beachfront to alpine meadow, Hunting & Fishing New Zealand shares the love of the Kiwi outdoors. Our point of difference is that we only stock the proven

brands. Our range of camping and tramping equipment and accessories ensure you'll have everything you need for your next outdoor adventure.” It is good to know that all stores are stocking the best performing equipment, because the staff you deal with are all active sportsmen and sportswomen who get out and use this gear themselves. There is so much there you obviously can’t see it all. No worries though. There is an extensive catalogue, and whatever you pick out can be there within a couple of days. With over 500,000 readers it is the most widely read sporting publication in New Zealand. But wait, as they say… there is more! You get expert and up-to-date advice on where to go and what to take. You will be updated on rules and regulations. You will get the latest ‘gen’ on weather, the best options, the best spots, and you will get feedback from other customers via the store personnel, who have their fingers on what is happening. They can offer practical advice, help out with equipment, such as spooling lines for you, and even offer fly casting tuition. After all, they want you to be successful; and as their catch cry goes, “out there doing it.”

PAVING THE WAY

unctionality and aesthetics are important factors to consider when building outdoor living spaces. Finding the right material that marries these two factors is the key to having that perfect outdoor living space for your home. Building or rebuilding your driveway, patios, and pool surrounds shouldn’t be an ordeal if your know what to look for. Interior designers and contractors are expected to present a list of choices for materials to be used for your outdoor flooring. Among the staple in the list are concrete pavers, brick pavers, interlocking pavers, and cobble stones. Contractors have been using concrete for outdoor floorings for quite some time. Intricate walkways, garden paths, patios, driveways, and pool decks have been designed, with concrete as its base element. Concrete pavers have increasingly gained popularity among builders because it is readily available and is the cheapest among all other floor materials. It is also relatively easier to manage than, say, marble or tile. Furthermore, decorative concrete pavers now come in numerous colours and styles that can cater to almost any design aesthetic—from retro to modern; from minimalist to eccentric. You can have it stained, textured, and stamped so it suits

Building or rebuilding your driveway, patios, and pool surrounds shouldn’t be an ordeal if your know what to look for.

whatever aesthetics you have planned. Another alternative for your outdoor space's flooring is the use of interlocking pavers. These pavers look like non-rectangular bricks. But instead of grout, sand is used to lock these pavers together. This type of flooring can effectively absorb light to medium shocks from earthquakes and slight ground erosion so they are less likely to crack. Many parks in metropolitan cities are paved with these interlocking surfaces because they have a

European feel to them. Commercial contractors are even asked to lay entire city blocks with this type of pavement. Lounging by the pool or having a barbeque by the poolside is a family activity most Kiwis enjoy. Having a functional and well-designed pool surround adds to the enjoyment of such events. Choosing the material for the pool area often depends on the surrounding landscape, dimensions of the space, traffic, maintenance, and budget.

Surrounded by creativity Architect Cymon Allfrey reflects on inner city habitation... Cymon Allfrey

W

e have recently relocated our office from suburbia to the central city, and while it is inspirational and exciting, we have never been so isolated. From an architectural and creative perspective, relocating to the central city was an easy decision. While the opportunity and vibrancy that exists in the suburbs is great, the aura of creativity and energy levels in the central city are unsurpassed. The biggest draw card by far, however was the chance to be at the heart of something. While, yes to get a coffee we need to get in the car and drive somewhere, going out for a walk unveils a hub of activity and inspiration.

to come, the central city needs to be populated. And while it might seem a lifetime has passed, it is still early days in the rebuild of our city. Reflecting back on post-quake repair work, when wanting to have access to our home and garden in time for Labour Weekend, a contractor reminded me that we would have many memories and fantastic weekends in our repaired home, but just not that Labour Weekend! We just had to accept we were going to miss out on some – but not all. Which got me thinking about Martin Hawes’ book, Twenty Good Summers. At fifty the financial advisor realised he wasn’t getting any younger and that he still had many more mountains to climb, so he decided to make the next twenty summers really count. We need to look at Christchurch like this. I am

WE NEED TO START SEEING THE OPPORTUNITY, SO THAT WE CAN ENJOY TWENTY GOOD SUMMERS IN A WONDERFUL CITY. From a business perspective however it was really difficult. Leaving the amenities of the suburban centers behind has seen a constant battle with ever-present road works, building demolition and construction. It has meant I am asking both staff and clients to be open and adaptable to change. Moving safety fences to access our car park, advising guests what to say to the road workers to get past the road closed signs, and assisting in navigation through an ever-changing route of detours, are all just part of the daily challenges to get into the office. Yet, for the city to grow, and for the amenities

a realist, and while right now the central city isn’t a playground of activity and amenities, I am going to enjoy twenty good years here. Think what an amazing place it is going to be. In the not so distant future, we will be able to reflect back on what it is like now, and think, ‘I was a part of that’. We chose to come back into the central city while recovery is still happening so that we could be part of history. Like the early settlers, we need to shift our thinking to be about breaking ground and being at the forefront of a new city, rather than putting it

in the too hard basket, or waiting for someone else to do it for us. Our early settlers didn’t walk over the bridle path and think ‘no’. They set about slowly building a cityscape for future generations to enjoy. We need to start seeing the opportunity, so that we can enjoy twenty good summers in a wonderful city. Yes there are frustrations around pace, but we need to remember that in time it will be done. Working in a mixed-use central city zone we will inherently have access to a higher level of amenities than in our previous suburban location. It will be a bustling and active zone 24/7. For now however, we just have to wait. It is a real privilege to be back in the city and be apart of the energy. Turning south then heading to the ‘burbs is really exciting, especially because no two journeys into the city are ever the same! While many hours can be spent whittling the day away watching diggers, working amongst the rebuild is feeding a renewed sense of creativity. We are excited about the future. www.caarc.co.nz

A 1400W Bowers and Wilkins sound system with19 speakers will also feature. Volvo claims the subwoofer is integrated into the car body and turns the whole interior space into a giant subwoofer. Under the bonnet a range of engines, based on the new 2.0-litre E-Drive engines, is expected to be on offer. This includes the turbo T6 and diesel D5 variant.

VOLVO CLAIMS IT WILL FEATURE NEW SAFETY TECHNOLOGY WHICH IS A SIGNIFICANT STEP CLOSER TO THEIR VISION THAT NO ONE WILL BE KILLED OR SERIOUSLY INJURED IN A NEW VOLVO CAR BY 2020.

After many months of teaser images and sneak peeks, Volvo has finally unveiled its all-new XC90 SUV.

T

he new XC90 is the result of a three year effort by Volvo to turn their flagship luxury off roader into a truly desirable vehicle The new XC90 will be based on Volvo’s muchtrialed Scalable Platform Architecture (SPA) and uses the firm’s new family of Drive-E engines, which have already been launched in a number of the company’s production cars. The new grille and LED daytime running lights, like those seen on last year’s Concept

Coupe is expected to feature on all future models. Wheels up to 22 inches may be on the cards too. The clean and simplistic interior, shown earlier this year to whet our appetites, is cutting edge. Features are a large iPad like touch screen infotainment system – which controls all entertainment features and a cloud based navigation system- digital dials and gear lever made of crystal glass.

Volvo also claims it will feature new safety technology which is a significant step closer to their vision that no one will be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo car by 2020. This includes the ‘run-off-road’ package which allows the XC90 to tighten the seatbelt and hold the occupants securely in the event of the driver losing control. The next generation of Volvo’s City Safe braking system will also feature, meaning the car will come to a complete stop quickly if oncoming cars, pedestrians or cyclists are detected. More details will be revealed closer to the New Zealand reveal which should be late next year.

Most handsome In recent years, the trend of turning premium five door hatch backs into mini SUVs has well and truly taken off. You will be hard pressed to find a manufacturer who hasn’t ventured down this path and returned with mixed results. Now it is Mercedes’ turn with the all new GLA.

T

he GLA will be a sales gem for the Stuttgart Company, taking on the BMW X1 and Audi Q3 in this ever-growing segment. Hands down, the GLA is one of the most handsome looking cars in its class. Its svelte and fluidic body is accompanied by LED headlights and lip spoiler. Having the AMG Sport pack ($3190) does wonders for street cred and 19 inch black alloys, coloured wing mirrors, black roof and lowered suspension (strangely) looks stunning too. The interior is identical to the A-Class on which it’s based. Everything is easy to interpret with leather and other fine materials overlaying the dash. Though hard plastics found below the climate controls felt out of

78 Sept 18, 2014 Metropol

place. The standard infotainment screen is rather small for my liking, but opting for the optional Command Package ($2,190) solves this with a larger and clearer screen. Plus a DVD drive and thumping Harman Kardon sound system is another reason to have it. Having the AMG pack also means AMG floor mats, sports leather seats, red stitching and an aluminium dash trim. Entry and exit is easy for those up front, though people of loftier build may find it difficult. Once inside, your surroundings wrap around you. The power operated tailgate rises to reveal considerable boot space too. With the exception of the bonkers AMG

tuned GLA45, two engines are available to New Zealand buyers, the question is, is it better to choose diesel or petrol. Here are the stats. The entry level 200 CDI gets a 2.2 litre four cylinder diesel engine with 100kW and 300Nm of torque, while the 250 4MATIC has the same 2.0-litre turbo four as the A250.

AUTO PLUS

in class Having the AMG Sport pack does wonders for street cred and 19 inch black alloys, coloured wing mirrors, black roof and lowered suspension (strangely) looks stunning too.

Naturally the 4MATIC means four-wheel-drive and both cars come standard with a seven speed transmission and Eco Stop/Start technology. Starting with the 200 CDI, we find things to be not as brisk as first thought. Though plenty of torque is available at low rpm, power delivery

seems rather strangled near the redline. However, the lack of grunt is compensated when you average 4.6l/100km in fuel consumption. The 250 4MATIC is easily quicker, thanks to the extra grunt and four wheel drive. A more seamless delivery of power also shows, though is nowhere near as economical (7.0l/100km). The Mercedes seven-speed DCT gearbox still needs a few tweaks for instant up shifts when using paddles. Though when left in automatic, this is forgivable. Mercedes knack for communicative steering shows and despite the larger alloys on my test cars, ride quality is supple. While the average GLA buyer will spend more time romping around upper crust suburbia than the great outdoors, I am happy to report that soft roading on muddy inclines and fields are a breeze for the GLA, especially when 4MATIC takes over with downhill descent and adjustable ride height. A week was spent with both diesel ($64,900) and petrol ($76,900) variants of the GLA. While the one to have right now is the 250 petrol, for those who simply want a stylish, well equipped and economical SUV hatch, then the 200 CDi is what you want. All in all though, the GLA is a hit, not a miss.

PERSONAL TWIST ON THE MARK 2

“WHILST MAINTAINING THE PURITY OF THE CAR’S FORM, I WANTED TO ADD A NUMBER OF MODERN TWISTS TO THE DESIGN.”

A unique Jaguar Mark 2 redesigned by Ian Callum, Director of Design at Jaguar Cars, and reengineered by leading restorers Classic Motor Cars Limited (CMC) has been unveiled at the opening of the company’s new headquarters in Bridgnorth, Shropshire.

T

he building was officially opened by motorcycle and Formula One Grand Prix world champion John Surtees OBE and the car was unveiled by Jaguar’s legendary test driver Norman Dewis. CMC’s new building complex is one of the biggest of its kind in the UK. Fitted out to the highest standards and with new paint and trim shops, it provides some 40,000 square feet of production space, allowing CMC to cover every aspect of a car’s restoration in-house, except for chrome plating. Another 24,000 square feet is provided for bespoke classic car storage. This exciting 18 month joint project between

Ian Callum and CMC has endeavoured to retain the integrity of the original Mark 2, whilst making it even more exciting in shape and performance. Ian Callum said: “This is a very personal statement. A long held notion that, although the Mark 2 has always been a beautiful car, it could be even more exciting in shape and performance. Whilst maintaining the purity of the car’s form, I wanted to add a number of modern twists to the design. Simplification and clarity was my objective.” The car has been redesigned by Ian for his own personal use and, working with CMC's engineers, it now boasts a huge number of

aesthetic and technical modifications that make this a practical, reliable, enjoyable and exciting everyday vehicle. Featuring a modified and uprated 4.3 litre XK engine, 5-speed manual gearbox, unique independent rear suspension and upgraded front brakes, the Mark 2 by Callum provides an intuitive driving experience. Commenting on the specifications, Ian said: “The stance of the Mark 2 is already excellent, but I wished to make it even better. The car’s form is now 30mm lower and sits on 17” split rim spoke wheels. The bumpers are now part of the overall form. It is a fine balance of extracting and adding.

Latest: extreme race cars We at AutoPlus love motorsport. So when a new race car is unveiled, we immediately take notice. Here are three which have blown us away… Renault say, “will act as a spring board” for entrance into GT and Endurance races around Europe and America. Underneath the striking aerodynamic body lies a Dallara designed carbon-fibre tub, double wishbone pushrod suspension and carbon ceramic brakes. A 3.8 litre twin-turbo V6 producing in excess of 370kW will provide the grunt.

Renaultsport RS 01

R

enault used the recent Moscow Motorshow to lift the lid on its most extreme sports race car in years. Called the Renaultsport RS 01, it will contest the Renault World Series Championship in 2015 and

he new Lamborghini Huracan is pretty hardcore right? Think again. Unveiled during Monterey Car Week in California, the Huracan LP620-2 Super Trofeo is Lambo’s next extreme chapter in their one-make Blancpain Super Trofeo

McLaren P1 GTR

I

n 1995, McLaren kicked arse at Le Mans with the F1 GTR, winning the 24 hour race outright. Today McLaren have paid homage, with a hardcore race-bred version of their awesome P1 hyper car. Regarded as “the most track-tailored and most powerful model produced by McLaren to date,”

series. Built for the 2015 season which kicks off in Asia, Europe and North America, Lambo quotes the stripped out Huracan weighing in at 1270kg, 262kg less than the standard car. Power is up by 7kW to 456kW and zero to 100km/h is a blistering 3.2 seconds. Drive goes to the rear and a 10 stage race aero package means this raging bull will be charging for sure.

the P1 GTR is sure to be weapon. An 80mm wider front track, more aggressive front splitter and a body “shrink-wrapped” around the carbon MonoCage tub is designed to channel airflow from the wheels. Race suspension, 19 inch race alloys and a large rear wing with active DRS (Drag Reduction System) like in F1 are just the start. No word yet on extra power, though 673kW from the standard car should be enough.

Don’t overlook the XC60

V

olvo in New Zealand is only going from strength to strength, though in the ever competitive segment of luxury five-seater soft roaders its German rivals have been dominant. Therefore, Volvo’s XC60, is sometimes over looked, a shame really, because it happens to be quite good.

The slim-line centre console stares up at you, showing every knob and switch neatly grouped together. Everything you touch feels chunky and well built, even the sound of the door closing is enough to remind you of this. Being a high riding soft roader, head and legroom is very generous for front and rear passengers. Boot space is certainly generous too. Equipment is decent with satellite navigation and Bluetooth being the norm. Standard for the D5 and top of the line T6 is the Lifestyle Pack. This includes keyless entry, parking sensors, heated front seats and tinted windows, good for keeping those valuables out of sight.

For 2014, there have been subtle changes. Though on first impressions, things seem very much the same as before. Take a second glance and you begin to notice those changes. A more pronounced nose and wider headlights along with new 18 inch alloys are included. Hop into almost any new Volvo these days and be ready to experience a flurry of déjà vu. That said, Volvo certainly know how to create a comfortable and visually pleasing place to sit.

Four power plants are on offer with both diesel and petrol across the range. Featured here is the D5 Luxury AWD, which in Volvo speak, means a 20 valve 2.5-litre five cylinder, twin-turbocharged diesel engine. In terms of power and torque, a six speed automatic box and all-wheel-drive are featured to help put the 158kW and 440Nm to the road in the best way possible. Claimed fuel figures of 6.4l/100km means the XC60 hardly gulps away at the diesel you put in. Prices for the new XC60 start at $69,990 for the entry level petrol powered T5 and the D5 Luxury AWD featured here can be yours for $84,990, making it considerably less than the equivalent Audi or BMW.
