Neighbours in a flap over pigeon poo PIGEON PROBLEMS: Giles Goulden (inset) has gone to the city council for help because he says his neighbour’s pigeons are affecting the enjoyment of his property. ANDREW KING

A neighbourhood war is brewing in Northwood over pigeon poo. Giles Goulden and Suzanne Walker have asked the city council if there is anything it can do about their neighbour’s 80 pigeons. The problematic pigeons swoop and leave droppings on their house, deck, barbecue and washing, said Mr Goulden. The couple moved into their Northwood home in 2014 when the neighbour had only a few birds in a small coop. Two years on, the coop has

ter to do with their time. Mr Fisher said he had received a phone call from the city council saying it would not be following up the complaint as the birds were not being a nuisance. A city council spokeswoman said both parties had been spoken to but the matter was still being investigated. Mr Goulden said he did not want the dispute to descend into a “street fight as it is not the way he would like to deal with things. “We have gone to the council but they are dragging their feet a bit on this one.

Mr Goulden said the average pigeon drops around 10kg of poo each year and with 80 of them it was getting close to a tonne of droppings in the area each year. The couple took their concerns to the Shirley-Papanui Community Board which asked city council staff to look into what could be done. The cat was up too high for the owner to get it down so they called in the Fire Service. It was rescued within 20min of the appliance arriving. A spokesman said it was the second cat in two days which had been rescued after being stranded up a tree. FALL BOARDING BUS A woman who fell while attemptinwg to board a bus at the Bishopdale Mall was taken to hospital last Monday. St John sent an ambulance to the scene around 11.30am. The woman, in her 90s, was taken to Christchurch Hospital’s emergency department with moderate injuries.

PLAYGROUND FUNDED: The Merivale Reserve will get a new playground thanks to some determined work by Charlotte Gray (below).

New playground reward for resident’s effort There will be a new children’s playground in Merivale thanks to the determined effort of a resident. Merivale’s Charlotte Gray campaigned for a new playground in Rugby St because she wanted an activity area for younger children in the area. After an 11-month fundraising effort, $85,000 worth of equipment will be installed early in the new year.

Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board, Fendalton New World, the Canterbury Community Trust and a $10,000 anonymous donation all helped to get her over the fundraising line. The city council has matched dollar for dollar the $42,500 raised. The playground will be built in the Merivale Reserve on Rugby St. The first stage will involve put-

ting in the play equipment, softfall area and the pathway through the middle of the playground. Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board deputy chairman David Cartwright was delighted the board could help out with the project. “Being able to assist people like Charlotte Gray with the new playground in the Rugby St reserve is very rewarding,” he said.

Committed to helping the community David Cartwright - FendaltonWaimairi Community Board deputy chairman. This is my second term on the community board and the enjoyment and passion to be able to help my community hasn’t waned. I recently attempted to formalise the naming of Bishopdale Park playground to the elephant playground. For generations people have been referring to it as ‘Elephant Park’ and I would hate to see in time the elephant removed and not replaced. By trying to formalise the name I am hoping that my grandchildren will still be able to play on the elephant slide. I am also actively involved in the new Burnside Park fitness trial that is planned to open in earlier 2016. The establish of four work-

out fitness stations is a perfect example of the city council, community, private enterprise and the community board all working together for a great outcome. In addition, being able to assist people like Charlotte Gray with the new playground in the Rugby St reserve, or the residents of Bishopdale in reestablishing their community library is very rewarding. Our ward faces many challenges, new and old, small and large from quarrying in the Yaldhurst area with its com-

bined effect of increased heavy vehicle traffic to park congestion around Jellie Park. As a active sportsperson and father of two young boys I am keen to see the community embrace many of the city council’s cycleways that are being built currently.

This letter was submitted by Lucy and Murray Turley about the Papanui Parallel Cycleway plan. When the Papanui Parallel Cycleway is built it will mean loss of access into and out of Grassmere St and Main North Rd. The city council has provided no safe viable alternative routes for people needing to travel north, the only suggestion being they should turn left out of Grassmere St and travel Langdons Rd and then cut through Sissons Rd. This is totally not safe. At present it can be quite tricky to turn right onto Main North Rd but it is possible. With this new no-right-turn in place there is no alternative provided. Many people turn into and out of this road, largely because most of the other roads off Main North Rd (going south) are no exit roads. Very few people are aware of this loss of turn – it has not been notified other than in this publication and even then it is almost impossible to pick up on. The booklets have been delivered only to people who live on the roads where the new cycleway will be, not to the side streets that are also going to be affected. If there was a safe viable alternative for people travelling north, this matter wouldn’t be so terrible, but there isn’t. Other streets in the area are narrow and could not cope with the increased traffic flow. (Abridged)

With the increasing number of liquor bans throughout the city, should the city council just place a blanket ban on drinking in public? Or are we turning into a nanny state? RESTORED: “Granny” Catherine Deans’ bedroom was one of the worst-damaged in the February 2011 earthquake, but after years of work from skilled tradespeople like Robbie Lange (above), the room now looks almost identical to what it was before the earthquakes.

Riccarton House restored GABRIELLE STUART

A three-year period of hard work has resulted in the restoration of the Canterbury heritage home Riccarton House. More than 70 people worked on the restoration after it was damaged in the February 2011 earthquakes. Over the three years it took to restore the Riccarton House, Manager Rob Dally and his wife Jan documented the whole process and have just finished a book titled Riccarton House Earthquake Book. “Having worked there for seven-and-a-half years, I fell in love with the place and the people who worked on the place loved it too. It kind of has that affect on people,’’ Mr Dally said. The repairs took three years because of the strengthening needed and the length it took using traditional techniques.

Copies of the book can be viewed at Canterbury Museum and Christchurch City Libraries, a limited number will be available for public sale online. Part of the book, Riccarton House Earthquake Book, can be read online at www.blurb. com, and copies can be ordered through the site. WORK OF LOVE: Rob and Jan Dally have spent more than three years documenting the restoration and strengthening of Riccarton House. Mr Dally said there were visible cracks in the floor and walls. The core structure of the house had also been damaged, the fireplace had collapsed and the ornate facades were buried under mounds of fallen bricks.

Gradually as time moved on more damage was discovered in the building including internal rot and faulty wiring which insurance would not cover. Mr Dally said at the time the rebuilding seemed overwhelming yet the trust believed it was worth saving. He said about 60,000 hours of work was dedicated to the restoration and people from all over the world helped with the project.

CAR CRASH St John responded to a crash between two vehicles on Daniels Rd, in Redwood, around 10.30am on Monday. An ambulance and rapid response unit was sent to the scene. One female patient was taken to Christchurch Hospital’s emergency department with moderate injuries. MAN TAKEN TO HOSPITAL A crash between two cars at the intersection of Papanui and Innes Rds on Sunday required an ambulance. St John was sent to the scene around 4.30am. A man, in his 30s was taken to Christchurch Hospital’s emergency department. FUNDING SOUGHT Cobham Intermediate pupils Courtney Godinet has applied for $300 funding from the Fendalton-Waimairi

ROAD TO STAY OPEN Plans to close a Strowan Rd due to safety concerns will not be pursued. Closing part of Plynlimon Rd was an option city council staff considered after reports of anti-social behaviour associated with the road and Plynlimon Park. Two options were proposed after the park was investigated twice by the city council’s Crime Prevention Team. One was to extend the park removing the road in the cul-de-sac by covering it with grass. The other would see the installation of traffic control bollards to prevent vehicle access to the cul-desac end of Plynlimon Rd. Both options were deemed too expensive to be pursued. Both crime prevention through environmental design reports showed no significant crime or safety-related issues associated with the park.

We work directly for and with the homeowner to establish: • If your scope of works is correct • To assist with the insurance part of your claim • To manage the repairs from the initial stages to completion • To have quality tradespeople and workmanship assured

Being the fairy godmother to children in hospital Fairy dresses and a bit of imagination is one Selwyn House pupil’s way to help kids with their stay at the Christchurch Hospital. Eliza Meekings visited the hospital’s activity room last week to donate six princess dresses that she made for children. After spending time on and off in various wings of the hospital over the last couple of years, Eliza said she understood what it is like to want to be someone else, even for just a few minutes. “When you dress up, you step into another world. You can become a princess, a fairy, a pirate, and everything else just flies away,” she said. She said the only mildly amusing thing in the hospital is the beds that go up and down but they grow “stale pretty quickly”. “That is why I chose to create costumes for ill children,” she said. Canterbury District Health Board child health services team leader Allie Bower said it was lovely to receive such a heartfelt donation.

Peter Van Der Zee

Seasoned gardener looking to Keen Redwood gardener Peter Van Der Zee has never read a gardening book in his life but that has not prevented him from winning 261 awards for his work. He speaks with Andrew King about why he is known as the Burt Munro of gardening and what he does to keep his garden looking great Hi Peter, tell us where you grew up? I grew up in Cranford St in Christchurch. What was it like? The old days my dad used to call it the mad-mile because of the speed cars used to do up and down the road. The backyard was Meadow St Motor Camp which I believe is still there to this day. I really enjoyed living there. Where did you go to school? I went to St Joseph’s School. My dad went there too and used to sing in the choir. But the church has been pulled down now. I didn’t mind that school because I was able to walk to and from it each day. Then I went to St Bede’s College. One of my fist memories from there was getting the cane 12 days after starting because I refused to do the haka. I said there were other sports out there and should

be not so much focus on rugby. That would have been quite a first impression? Yeah, well I was into motorcross and mountain biking. I have only ever seen one fight in those sports, can’t say the same about rugby. But each to their own. What are you passionate about? I love gardening, motocross and mountain biking. My mum used to say I was always in the dirt with one or the other. I also love garden competitions. At my first house my dad came round and said, ‘better mow the lawns for this weekend, I have entered you in a gardening competition’, which I won. Where does that love for gardening come from? My granddad was a keen gardener. I still use his push mower. Wow, how old is the mower? It is quite old as I have been gardening for more than 30

years. I got a new set of blades for it a few years ago. It is really good, sometimes the older stuff is better. I was once called Burt Munro because of the old mower and because I am old fashioned. I got the DVD World’s Fastest Indian and have watched it about 22 times. Were your parents a big influence when it comes to gardening? Mum and dad were keen gardeners. They had an aver-

age section like mine. When I was young I used to play in the garden with my granddad and help him out. I have never read a gardening book in my life but I know a bit about it. Why do you do it? I really see being out in the garden as my home. I have both normal plants and artificial ones. Sometimes things made in China last longer, sometimes. Have you won any awards for it?

Altogether I have won 261 awards for gardening. Winning the Christchurch beautifying and horticulture award is the icing on the cake, the horticultural is for the garden and the beautifying is what the place looks like from the road. That award was satisfying. Unfortunately Redwood hasn’t had a spring garden contest for about four years, which is a bit of a shame. Do you have a favourite plant?

reap more awards IMMACULATE: Peter’s garden is where he feels at home.

Not so much a favourite plant but I am really keen on yellow, blue, apricot and white flowers. I have 74 baskets that hate the nor’west wind but I have stripped them now to stop blowing around. I like lots of rhododendrons and camellias. I get them from the Styx Mill Nursery and Oderings Nursery, they look after me. Do you have a plant you are not so fond of?

Not into the red-coloured flowers. How many flowers do you have in your garden? There are about 5000 flowers when I’m competing. What does the future hold for you and your garden? I am looking forward to the summer contests, I have to get a lot in before Christmas. Gardening is all about timing and weather. With gardening

you have to do a little bit each day and in the summer – you have way more daylight to get it done. The longer you leave it the harder it is. I re-soil twice a year. That way it is easy to get the weeds out and the plants really love the new soil. Do you talk with the plants? Yeah. I do talk to them. I wish them luck sometimes. It helps them grow.

Since then, nearly 500 Christchurch boys have been a part of it – including wellknown New Zealand opera singer Jared Holt and former Crusader and former All Black Andy Ellis. The club will celebrate its 30th birthday with a gala style concert on December 5 at St Margaret’s College. The September 2010 earthquake destroyed the choir’s rehearsal space at the Oxford Tce Baptist Church, and also led to the cancellation of the 25th anniversary celebrations. Since 1985, the choir has toured within New Zealand and overseas to Japan and Australia, and has performed with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra as well as the worldrenowned Vienna Boys’ Choir. Earlier this year members performed at the opening event for the ICC Cricket World Cup in Christchurch. For more information or to arrange an interview phone John MacDonald 027 365 2579.

RUG FUNDRAISING: Harewood School pupils eager on raising as much money as possible for a sailing trip have held a rug sale. On November 19 pupils, in groups of two or three, set up a stall on a rug and sold items to the rest of the school. These included food, books, toys, raffles and lucky dips. The school’s year 5 and 6 pupils wanted to raise funds towards their sailing day being held at Lake Rua towards the end of this term. The pupils learnt a lot of good skills from working together, money handling and selling, a school spokesperson said. They raised $788.40 for their sailing trip. Big effort from little ones for coastguard heroes SUPER FUNDRAISING: Coastguard hero day last Tuesday was a lot of fun for Marshland School pupils. Their efforts helped raise $247.50 for Coastguard Waimakariri-Ashley. It was something the senior students wanted to do as a fundraiser since the beginning of the year. Coastguard volunteer Phil Walker showed the kids the boats and explained how to be safe while having fun in the water. His daughter Amelia, attends the school. Associate principal Riki Culley said it was a really good day and it was a shame they couldn’t get all the kids on the boat.

The Worst-Kept Secret on The‘Lane’

The reason behind Christmas

GREAT SHOW: With Christmas five weeks away Selwyn House pupils put on a nativity play. The pupils performed their musical production of This Way to Bethlehem to the parents and school community last week. It featured a 10-day old as the baby Jesus. He was suitably relaxed and chilled lying in the manger while all the children sang about the reason behind Christmas celebrations. The school has a tradition of performing a nativity with the junior girls every second year.

HAPPY TO HELP: From left, Tessa Appo, Ella Stephens, Paige Causer, Evie Eaton and Isabella Read spent a morning cooking breakfast for families staying in the Ronald McDonald House.

Selwyn House girls cook up some love

Cereal and toast were off the breakfast menu and blueberry pancakes added for families staying at Ronald McDonald House. Selwyn House School pupils gave their time on November 22 cooking breakfast for families that were staying in the Ronald McDonald House. The girls put on an upgraded menu with two options – a full cooked breakfast or fluffy blueberry pancakes with bacon and maple syrup. It was a step up from the usu-

al spread of toast and cereal. Ella Stephens, Tessa Appo and her parents, Evie Eaton, Isabella Read and Paige Causer met at 7.30am Sunday to cater a special breakfast for the 60 residents. Ella was the chief liaison officer and organiser. A school spokesman said: “The girls did a grand job and there were many compliments and thank you’s given.” Comments ranged from how great it was to see young girls acting so mature, how delicious the food was and if they

would come back tomorrow. One man said it was the “best breakfast he had” since moving in to the Ronald McDonald House. Ronald McDonald House in Christchurch is located just a few minutes walk from Christchurch Hospital and provides support to families of child patients up to and including the age of 21. Any family who needs to travel to Christchurch so their child can receive treatment at any Christchurch hospital isigible to stay.

WORKING TOGETHER: Selwyn House pupils have teamed up with St James School and a Japanese school to paint a mural celebrating their cultural similarities and differences.

Joint mural to share cultures ANDREW KING

Selwyn House School pupils have teamed up with St James School in Aranui and a Japanese school to paint a mural. Earlier in the year the schools were given the opportunity to participate in the Japan Art Miles Mural Exchange project. The aim of the project is to collaborate with a Japanese school to share the painting of the mural. Since there were so many willing participants, St James School and Selwyn House have worked together on one half. The mural will be sent to Japan for pupils to finish the other half. The theme of the mural was decided between the schools, with a focus on peace and harmony. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural

Organisation teams from Selwyn House and St James have been working together for the last two years. The Japanese school, Otogawa Elementary, is located in Okazaki City, which is in the centre of Japan’s biggest island, Honshu. Selwyn House teacher Rachael Langley has been working with the pupils on the project. “We communicated with Otigawa School in Japan, through Skype and photos on a forum, and decided to learn about the other country’s culture and share what we have learnt on the mural,” she said. “We have also designated the middle part of the mural for pictures of what both countries have in common, such as rugby, fireworks and beautiful moun-

A sprint to the finish has seen St Albans resident Mike Phillips win the Queenstown half marathon. Phillips took out the marathon in a time of 1hr 14min 18sec narrowly beating fellow Christchurch athlete Adam Jaques. Phillips said after competing in the Challenge Shepparton in Australia the weekend prior, he was unsure how he would go in Queenstown. “I found the last half quite tough but managed to have just enough in the tank to sprint for the win at the end. “The course was incredible with such amazing scenery through to Queenstown,” he said. Papanui’s past

Complex dedicated to care CHRISTINE GRANT

The demolition of the Wesley Home and Hospital on Harewood Rd over the last three months has revealed modern new buildings which have been constructed around its three sides. Wesley Care is owned and operated by the Christchurch Methodist Central Mission. By the early 1950s there were many elderly people in Christchurch needing support and care so the Central Mission felt it was time to start providing accommodation and care for these people. Their first purchase, in 1952, was McKellar House, also known as Beech House because of the large beech tree on the property. This was on an acre of land on Park Tce. Arnold McKellar had fought in the Taranaki Wars before coming to Christchurch in 1912 and having this house built. In the 1940s the house was converted into six flats. The architect Melville Lawry drew up the plans for its conversion to accommodate the elderly. Wesley Lodge was officially opened by the Minister of Health, Jack Marshall on November 22, 1952. An 18-bed hospital was added in 1956. In 1968 the mission bought the neighbouring property, Fleming House, that had been built for Arthur Fleming in 1926.

GUTTED: The Brian Ford Engineering factory in Woolston after Tuesday night’s fire.

Firefighter injured in factory blaze THE FLAME FILES BY MARK THOMAS – FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER

I missed writing the Flame Files last week. The reason being I was part of the 35,000 people who watched Fleetwood Mac in Dunedin. Both the show and the venue were fabulous but it did cross my mind that it is reassuring to be in a country where that number of people can congregate without the fear of an extremist spreading mayhem. We take it for granted but in some parts of the world the reality is different. And that is terrifying in itself. The large fire at Brian Ford Engineering on Tuesday night resulted in one of our newest firefighters being treated in hospital, he was released the

next morning. Here’s hoping he makes a full recovery. This is just a reminder that amongst the challenge and thrill of fighting a large and fully involved fire, what we are asking our crews to do is inherently dangerous. We have equipment and procedures to minimise the risk but it always remains. Our duckling affair continues. And I know the reports are repetitive. But one in Marshlands on Thursday last week took my fancy. Mother duck was concertedly creating a traffic hazard while the ducklings were deep in a drain. The final radio report stated four very dirty firefighters had emerged with four ducklings. That’s above and beyond. But I wouldn’t expect anything different. Well done the St Albans crew.

DEMOLISHED: Wesley Home and Hospital on Harewood Rd has been demolished over the last three months.

The Fleming family had been prominent in farming at Port Levy since arriving on the Randolph in 1850. Both these building were in use until 1997 when they were sold for residential development. In 1964 the Department of Health approved in principle a new 35-bed home for the aged. The board of the South Island Children’s Home had agreed to lease part of their land on Harewood Rd to the mission trustees. A contract was let in 1968 for the building of a three-storey, 40bed home to be called Fairhaven. It was officially opened on November 23, 1969, by Mayor Ron Guthrie, and dedicated by the president of the Methodist Conference, Reverend John Lewis. Rest homes were run very dif-

ferently back then, with the residents helping to set tables, wash dishes, prepare vegetables and change beds. The third floor of the building, the hospital, wasn’t started until 1974 when the roof was removed for work to start. This floor was officially opened on June 15, 1975, by the minister of Health Tom McGuigan and dedicated by the president of the Methodist Church of New Zealand Reverend William Morrison. During the 1980s the Residential Club and a number of flats were built on surrounding grounds. When the next stage of the building is completed, hopefully, by the end of 2016, the complex will have up to 100 hospital beds.

Tips to improve your running Running should be as easy as putting one foot in front of the other right? Anyone can run, but having good technique can make it feel so much easier.

G

ood running technique will make your runs feel less tiring, reduce your risk of injury, and ultimately be more enjoyable. Muscle People Physiotherapists specialise in assessing and improving running technique whether you are a competitive runner or just running for fun. Start getting better now with these basic tips: POSTURE • Keep your head straight Look straight ahead of you, about 30-40 metres out in front and avoid looking down at your feet. Looking down will create tension in your neck and shoulders. • Shoulders back and down Your shoulders should be back and down not up by your ears. Keep them relaxed and avoid tensing them. Don’t hunch over as this restricts breathing. • Keep your elbows at 90 degrees Your elbows should be bent at a 90 degree angle. Try to swing your arms forward and back, not across your body. This arm movement helps to propel you forward. Your hands should be relaxed, but don’t let them flop. Tight hands can cause tension all the way up to the back and shoulders. • Solid core Focus on keeping your core (trunk)

firm, though not rigid, and straight and your hips and shoulders level and relaxed. Keeping this position in your hips can help prevent low back and hip pain. FOOT STRIKE AND LEG POSITION • Don’t strike the ground too heavily Good running is light and quiet. You should land in the middle of your foot with a slightly bent knee. Whatever your weight, your feet should not slap loudly as they hit the ground. Light steps are more efficient and cause less stress to the body and landing on the middle of your foot is the safest way to land for most recreational runners. That’s the basics but there’s always more we can do to help. Try these: RUNFIT – The technical edge Muscle People Physiotherapy & YMCA gym have a running group in Hagley Park – RunFit, led by a Physiotherapist and Canterbury competitive runner, and a Personal Trainer from the YMCA gym. RunFit focuses on running technique which is vital to improving speed, reducing injuries and making running more enjoyable for both regular runners and the beginner. RunFit is ideal for regular runners who are looking to challenge themselves, as well as the beginning runner who wants to start with good technique and the guidance of professionals.

Clever design for Mercedes-Benz SUV

There’s not a lot of product or competition in New Zealand’s upmarket mid-size hatchback/ mini-SUV market. Yes, there are a smattering of mainstream models, but if you have a few extra dollars to spend and want something just a little exotic you don’t have a lot of choice, and most of what is available comes out of Germany. Yet, the Mercedes-Benz B-Class could still be deemed to be affordable. The four-model range here starts at $53,200 and ends at $71,900 for the 4Matic B 250 which this evaluation focuses on. As its nomenclature suggests, the B 250 is a four-wheel-drive version; however, the rest of the range is just front-wheel-drive only, while amongst those there are two 1.6-litre petrol powered models and a 2.2-litre diesel. The B 250 has a 2-litre turbocharged petrol engine, and it is a unit which is used widely through Mercedes-Benz product. I’ve become very familiar with this engine and I’ve often remarked that it is a good combination of available power and the economy we would expect from today’s modern engine. Just like in other applications, the 1991cc unit is rated with 155kW with 350Nm of torque

available at between 1250rpm and 4000rpm. If you take into account that peak power arrives at just 5500rpm, there is a solid flow of energy which works almost silently as the engine hauls up and down the rev band. That type of refinement is why many buyers choose upmarket models, the engineering which goes into a high class product is sophisticated, and it shows with its effortless manner and smooth operation. Drive is directed through a seven-speed dual clutch gearbox. Effectively it works like a traditional automatic, and with just two pedals you drive it as such. There are also steering wheel-mounted paddles which can be used to initiate changes. The beauty of DCT transmission are the quick, sharp gearshifts, especially under load, the flick of the tachometer is often the only way the driver can sense ratio change. And the gearing is perfectly balanced between what is expected for acceleration and fuel economy. Some of the important fig-

Inside, the B 250 gets the usual box of tricks which makes a Mercedes-Benz such a desirable purchase, especially for safety where a full suite of kit is included. And it also has the benefit of clever design. There’s no doubting its hatchback/SUV looks, but that lends itself to a spacious, comfortable interior environment and a 488-litre luggage carrying capacity (1547-litres with the rear seats folded). Mercedes-Benz has just given the B-Class a bit of a facelift, it is a timely refresh for the series given that BMW’s Active Tourer has just landed and its concept is very similar. Nevertheless, for the Mercedes-Benz faithful who need practicality and functionality into their purchase, the B-Class fills that void. You also get a whole lot of prestige within the package.

TRIBUTE TO PROMINENT LEADING JAZZMEN

Two legends of the Christchurch Big Band scene, Doug Kelly and Doug Caldwell, will be celebrated in a tribute concert to their music in the best way possible. The Garden City Big Band will play original music and arrangements by the two Dougs from an era when swing music and big band jazz were celebrated on the airwaves and the dance halls of New Zealand. Now both over 80 years old, Doug Kelly and Doug Caldwell, along with musical director Lana Law have worked with the Garden City Big Band to bring their music to life. Originals like 'Wakatipu Environs', 'Thanks Bill' and 'Douglas Delight' sit along tasty workings of well known songs 'Days of Wine and Roses','Scrapple from the Apple', and even 'Jeepers Creepers'. Established Jazz Diva and Doug Kelly's granddaughter, Kate Taylor joins the band on vocals. 4pm Sunday 6th December | Charles Luney Auditorium, St Margaret's College. Tickets, Adults $16, Students $10 from
