Forces joined to halt cycleway plan ANDREW KING

St Albans businesses and residents have joined together to put a stop to the Papanui Parallel Cycleway. They say it is a â&#x20AC;&#x153;rush jobâ&#x20AC;? by the city council that will cost them much-needed parking spaces. They have the backing of ShirleyPapanui Community Board deputy chairman Aaron Keown who has criticised city council staff for failing to communicate properly with those affected. The cycleway is one of 13 to be built in the city over the next seven years. It is expected to be completed by the end of 2018 at a cost of $156 million. At a recent community board meeting, five deputations regarding the proposed cycleway were presented. Four were against the current plan and one was in support. The deputations will now form part of the community boardâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s submission on the cycleway projects. construction under way. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I understand that the process has been rushed so that the council will qualify for Government funding,â&#x20AC;? said Ms van Montfort. If the city council had slowed down, residents and business owners might have been able to be a part of the process,â&#x20AC;? she said. They believed the submission documents asked leading questions so the outcome was always going to be in favour of construction of the cycleway. Mr Keown has backed the complainants and criticised city council staff handling of the project. He said city council staff had a â&#x20AC;&#x153;fundamental breakdownâ&#x20AC;? in communications with nearby residents and businesses. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Instead of gauging what the community wants, city council staff have designed the cycleway then asked for input, it should be the other way around,â&#x20AC;? he said. He backed up business owners who believed the project is being rushed so enough money is spent on cycleways to continue getting a Government subsidy.

‘Problem’ bus stop Bus users drop rubbish, smoke in front of shop

HOLMWOOD RD UPDATE Works on Holmwood Rd are almost wrapped up. SCIRT is planning to open it to two-way traffic and end the one-way restriction starting today. Wastewater repairs were completed two weeks ago and last week SCIRT has been preparing the road for chip sealing. The road will be swept in the week following the chip sealing and will have another sweep a few weeks later. SCIRT has installed 267m of new wastewater main and 20 wastewater laterals on Holmwood Rd. The work took longer than expected because of high ground water levels in the area requiring four de-watering pumps running 24/7.

A Papanui business owner is fed up with a troublesome bus stop outside saying people are fouling the footpath, which then leeches into her salon. Beyonce Hair Extensions owner Melissa Pireni-Ndebele says people waiting at the bus stop in front of her Papanui Rd salon drop rubbish and if they are smoking prevent her from opening her shop windows. But worse yet, people at night use the footpath as a toilet, which leeches into her salon. She has asked for help from the Shirley-Papanui Community Board in May last year to see if they could help her with moving the bus stop. The bus stop was moved in front of a neigbouring business, but due to the smoke from people waiting drifting

into the takeaway outlet, it had to be moved back. “No one seems to be interested in my problem. I feel abandoned,” she said. She said the night time activities are to blame for the vandalism and other nasty surprises she finds on Monday but the bus stop the city council should be able to do something about. “When people stand out-

side smoking I can’t have the windows open. I work with the Cancer Society so I definitely can’t have smoke in the shop,” she said. City councillor Ali Jones said she had spoken with city council staff and they were working through the problem and that Mrs Pireni-Ndebele’s comments about being abandoned were a little unfair. “I am extremely busy at the

moment with around 20 other resident issues. That is not an excuse. Just want to explain that we have very big workloads and city council staff are working towards a solution,” she said. SPEED LIMIT APPROVED A new temporary speed limit around Rangi Ruru Girls’ School was approved at last week’s city council meeting. The speed limit will be lowered to 40km/h to make the surrounding streets safer for students getting to school. It will cost $69,000 to install the variable speed signs. Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board chairwoman Val Carter said it was great to make the streets around schools safer for students. PRIDE AWARDS The Fendalton-Waimairi Garden Pride Awards ceremony will be held on Thursday, March 3 at 3.30pm at the Russley Golf Club. Judging has taken place with about 130 gardens this year being selected for an award.

Kay Rainey, St Albans: Having just read the Nor’West News article I would like to contribute my two cents. The directional arrows on that particular corner (and many others I reckon) would better serve the flow of traffic safely if the centre lane was marked for right-turning traffic only and the left side lane marked to direct vehicles to the left and straight through only. Parking should only be permitted on the east and west (in this case Westminster St) similar to the situation on Innes Rd corner and if possible an arrangement made with the liquor store for some parking which may add to their business as well.

Readers give their views on if certain roads in the city need to have a reduced speed limit: Jean Shallard, Bishopdale: A road many of us consider very dangerous is the newlychanged Pound Rd. The section that covers the turn into the Harewood Golf Club and up to, and including, the turn off to McLeans Island should be looked and maybe have a reduced speed limit if nothing else can done. The speed of the very large-sized trucks and the width of the road is quite dangerous for all turning traffic Pat Colenso, Ilam: I think that Christchurch could benefit from a varied speed limit in some streets. But the signage both now and any change needs to be more frequently displayed. For some time I have been aware that there is not enough speed signs around and it is very easy to go over the limit or under when travelling around Christchurch and the suburbs. I phoned the city council over this many times but so far no change.

I wish to express my concern at some traffic tearing along our street in Burnside, as some drivers treat it like a race track. We live in Cranbrook Ave, which is on the bus route, and is also narrow. If a child or animal ran out they wouldn’t stand a chance. I definitely think that the speed limit for our street should be 40km/h. The shopping area in Kendal Ave, also should have a 40km/h limit too, for safety of people getting in and out of cars, and crossing the road. Another street of concern is Clyde Rd which is extremely narrow, also a bus route, and I think should be 40km/h. Volker Nock, Hoon Hay: Pretty much any residential side-street in Christchurch should be made a 30km/h zone. Living quality would be so much higher. Locally Leistrella Rd and Rydal St are obvious candidates as so many kids use them to get to school. Why only the CBD when the kids don’t dare to cycle anymore?

Love, time put in garden earns couple top award CHELSEA DANIELS

A Styx Mill garden filled with a “riot of colour” has taken out the top award Christchurch Beautifying Association’s annual competition. Brian and Janet Lovelock have put in 12 hours a day on their gardens at their Applefield Court property over the past few weeks to get it in tip top shape for the awards. The work has paid off, after they won the Ruske Cup, Premiere Garden and the CBA Trophy for continuing standard in the competition. Both retired, the couple have put in a lot of time and money into their garden spectacular. There are thousands of flowers, millions of petals, and a lot of love in this hidden retreat. “The pressure to win one of these competitions is just immense,” said Mrs Lovelock. “It’s a colourful oasis, it really is. It’s relaxing. I think people when they leave, they go ‘wow’,” she said. Their overall goal though – to make Christchurch beautiful again – and the beautifying as-

Enter City2Surf the corporate way IS THE only activity you do with your workmates sitting at a desk? Well it doesn’t have to be. Corporate groups around Canterbury are on the countdown to this year’s The Star City2Surf with Mike Pero event – and your company could be part of it. A group of 150 staff from Synlait has entered in this year’s event on March 20. Synlait senior marketing and event adviser Tegan Jones said it was the fifth year the company was entering the event. She said the health and wellbeing of staff and their families were important to the company, and this was a good way to get everyone together and motivate each other. “People look towards it, everyone talks about it, it’s a nice start of the year to get everyone together.” Synlait will have a shipping container at the event again this year, where its participants can relax, listen to music and eat. Already more than 150 corporate sites have been booked, and there are about 15 more up

for grabs. This year’s City2Surf will again feature two different events. Participants in the 14km event will set off at Centennial Park in Spreydon, while those taking part in the Sport Canterbury 6km route will begin at Opawa’s Hansen Park. Both finish at the Ferrymead playing fields. Synlait has staff entering in both events, with a mix of running, walking or even people taking push chairs along for the ride, Ms Jones said. “The nice thing about the event is it is open to every fitness level.” The Star City2Surf with Mike

CYCLIST HIT A cyclist was taken to Christchurch Hospital on Tuesday with moderate injuries after he was struck by a vehicle. St John sent an ambulance and a rapid response unit to the scene about 7.30am. The incident happened at the intersection of Russley and Avonhead Rds. St John took the man in

his 30s to hospital for further treatment. FUNDING SOUGHT Christchurch Boys’ High School’s year 10 student Sam Varley has applied for $300 from the Shirley-Papanui Community Board towards the costs to attend the China Study Tour to be held from April 2-17. The school is applying on behalf of five students to participate in the tour. Sam has been studying the Chinese language and culture for two years and plans to continue his Chinese studies into the future as he has a true interest for it. The board will decide if it will approve the funding on Wednesday. Two northwest students have applied for funding from the Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board. Cobham Intermediate School’s year 8 pupil E Wen Wong has applied for $400 towards representing New Zealand at the 2016 Future Problem Solving Conference in the United States from June 1-6. CBHS Lorcan Fivet, 16, has applied for $300 towards representing New Zealand at the Oceania Judo Union Championships in Canberra, Australia from April 6-14. Instagram account gets artist spot in London exhibition ANDREW KING

An Instgram account has netted big rewards for Merivale artist Katrina McGettigan – her paintings are London bound. Ms McGettigan, a former preschool teacher at Selwyn House School, was approached by The Brick Lane Gallery in London to be a part of a Urban versus Rural exhibition. They had noticed her work on her recently setup Instagram account. The Brick Lane Gallery is a contemporary fine art gallery which exhibits an eclectic variety of contemporary art by British as well as international artists from all corners of the world. Established in 2006, the gallery presents an integrated programme of exhibitions, including solo shows as well as group exhibitions of emerging and established artists from all artistic backgrounds. Ms McGettigan was delighted once she found out the offer was legitimate. “I do get a few offers from around the world so I am always sceptical when they come in,

SUMMER FUN: Selwyn House School year 7 pupils have been out in the wilderness on their annual camp. The first day was incredibly hot and sunny with lots of challenges for the girls. There has been mountain biking and tree climbing. Emily Cox and her group accepted the challenge to climb a tree blindfolded. This forced the girls in her group to improve their communication skills. At night, it was down to the hot pools where the girls had multiple turns on the hydro slide. The pool staff were very impressed with girls and their polite, enthusiastic manner and kept the slides open longer because they were so well behaved.

Wairakei School packed in more than 200 children and their families for its annual family fun day. It is a special evening to welcome new families to the school and take time to enjoy each other and chat with staff, families and children. Principal Steve Buckner said the day was well represented this year with a heap of families getting involved. “We had a picnic tea, games with the sports equipment, gokart rides, bouncy castles, fruit and a sausage sizzle,” he said. “It is an absolutely brilliant way to start the year at Wairakei School.”

New learning space Marshland School pupils now have a “building within a building” to learn in as they explore their new open classrooms. New learning hubs have been designed after consulting with the children about what helped them to learn and what sort of spaces would help with their learning. Principal Jacqui Pascoe said

At the risk of opening the floodgates it has been notable that we’ve had an extremely quiet summer and the 70-odd calls attended in the last week were fewer than those in a fine week mid-winter. Some of this can probably be attributed to see-saw summer weather. But I wonder if the message about treating heat and fire with the respect they demand has got through to enough people to make a difference in the statistics. We will see in the weeks ahead. Unfortunately, there are still those who suffer smoke inhalation themselves and the stink of smoke permeating their curtains and furniture from pots left on the stove. A lady in Dallington fell

asleep last Friday afternoon with food cooking and was fortunate the neighbours smelt smoke and, knowing she was inside, entered her house and helped her out. She was treated by ambulance with no apparent long-term effects. But she was lucky. Others in the past have not had the fortune to have such observant neighbours. Then on Wednesday the occupants of a house in Hampshire St, Aranui, appeared to have headed off to work with a pot still boiling on the stove. An hour later the neighbours have called in reporting smoke. Wainoni’s crew forced entry and turned the stove off. There was no fire. But every time the occupants sit on a couch or chair in the next few weeks the wee puff of acrid smoke released will remind them how lucky they really were.

All about attitude – Christian Gallen, Ngati Kahungunu, is the South Island co-ordinator for Attitude, a not-for-profit that gives health presentations to teenagers in schools across the city. He talks to Fraser Walker-Pearce about up-skilling parents, back flipping with Nitro Circus’ Travis Pastrana, and why he’s still a kid at heart Thanks for talking to me Christian. Tell me a bit about Attitude? I’m the South Island co-ordinator for Attitude, which is a hard thing to explain, but basically we’re New Zealand’s largest external health provider. So that means we give healthbased presentations to schools around the South Island. We cover mental health, relationships, skills for the real world, and a lot of other topics. I’ve been doing this job since 2009, and I still really enjoy it. I think I remember you guys from high school! I think we had presentations from a guy called James? Yeah, you probably would have! James is still here, we’re a small Christchurch-based team, just four of us. But the four of us managed

to visit all high schools in the South Island last year. We also give programmes for intermediate schools. Have you had to deal with some pretty sad problems in your time? We’re really more focused on the preventative health side of things, so we like to think of ourselves as the signpost at the top of the mountain rather than the ambulance at the bottom. So instead we speak to a full assembly of kids, and that allows them to be more informed to make good decisions when situations arise. In the intermediate programme it’s all about making friends and safety on the internet and things like that. Then when we get to high schools it’s more about mental health and relationships and things like that. Oh good to hear. Tell me about your time with Nitro Circus. Were you involved in their tour? Yeah I was. I was the official tour reporter in 2015. I got the job, which was amazing, because to even get an interview you had to make a video

I made a cool video that kind of grabbed the attention, with a 1min bio about myself, then you had to spam all your mates to get behind you and vote for you, and get as many votes as you could. There were hundreds of people that entered, and I was the only Kiwi that made it into the top 100, and I snuck into the top 10, who all got an interview. And I was lucky enough to get the job after that. So I got to meet all the crew, got to go on the tour bus. So I became the tour guide as well, because they were all tourists in New Zealand and I just got to hang out with them which was amazing. What inspired you to try out for the Nitro Circus job? Well my mate and I made a movie called Death Cheaters where we’d jump around and do all sorts of stunts, and it actually premiered at the wee cinema in Sumner. Being involved in that kind of stuff was just awesome. So I decided I’d go for this gig with Nitro.

And do you do any of that stuff nowadays? We still organise paintball events out at the beach and in the forest with homemade slingshots and we buy paint balls and go at it. You’d love it, it’s so much fun. I’m definitely a kid at heart. I probably would love that! What was your best experience with Nitro Circus? One of the best experiences

I had with them, and I knew I was with them because I had climbed onto Travis Pastrana’s (American stunt performer and motorcross rider) shoulders, when we were on Waiheke Island, and he tried to back flip into the water from about 8m up. But of course that’s just not how physics works, so we kind of just belly flopped into the water. So funny – but so sore af-

terwards. They also taught me how to back flip a BMX bike; after every event I got to slide down the gigantic mega ramp; and I got to be on stage and give people high fives when they landed their tricks. That’s crazy, I’m so jealous. You must have been gutted when it finished? It was so depressing when it finished, but I was just so mentally and physically drained. I still keep in touch with them online, we message each other a bit, and I get a few Snapchats from them. I also got to run their social media while they were on tour, which has about six million fans. So there was a bit of paper work to do it but so worth it. Pretty cool that you have Travis Pastrana’s details on your phone, not many people can say that. I heard that you also play in a band? Yes, I do, I play in a local band called Merchants of Flow, and we play reggae

music. We’ve been playing shows regularly in Christchurch every year for quite a few years, but some of them have had kids now or gone overseas and we haven’t played a gig in months. Wasn’t expecting to hear you’re a reggae player. What about your own schooling life? Well I’m 29 now, but I went to Redwood Primary, before my parents shipped me off to Middleton Grange for high school, which was a long bus ride every day. And after high

school, did you go to university? Yes, after high school I went to Canterbury University where I was dead set on becoming a teacher. I was also quite passionate about Te Reo Maori studies and it was a good way into the education system. So I majored in Te Reo Maori, and I was offered the job at Attitude. CYCLE, RUN AND SWIM: Medbury School pupils got stuck into the school year with a triathlon. Almost every boy from years 5 and 6 got involved, whether that be in the individual or team event. This year’s triathlon champion was Sam Idiens with the fastest time out of the 11 and 12 year-old boys. The junior triathlon champion, winning the Schneideman Brothers Cup, was Art Aitken who had the best time out of the nine and 10 year-old boys.

Premier league defending champions Papanui Tigers have unveiled their new strip for this season. They have also called in some heavy hitters to ensure their reign at the top is not a one year thing. Manager Nigel Thompson said the jersey was a simple one but illustrated the Tigers perfectly. “Yes the jersey sums up the tigers, we have a lot of fight in us now,” he said. Thompson said they had retained the coaching services

of Shane Endacott and he was vital to the Tigers’ setup. “We had a championship team last year no doubt, but the reason we were able to get over that line was because of Shane,” he said. A mix of experience and youth have been drafted into the side including former New Zealand Maori player Jaye Pukepuke and former junior Kiwi Roger Tafua, that latter Thompson said is a huge coup. “He is still young and will be a huge asset for the team,” he said. With the theme Shaping Canterbury’s future now: Collaboration – Regeneration – Innovation, this forum provides a showcase for inspiring case studies featuring new ways of working, innovative new products and services and gives organisations the opportunity to demonstrate business and thought leadership.

A message from the Earthquake Commission’s Chief Executive Ian Simpson on the fifth anniversary of the February 22 Canterbury earthquake. On Monday the 22nd we will pause to remember the tragic events of five years ago and, in particular, the 185 people who lost their lives. The Earthquake Commission has never forgotten the impact of that day on the residents of Canterbury and the rest of New Zealand. We are well aware of what we still need to do to assist the Canterbury recovery and are already working on the lessons we have learnt from the Canterbury earthquakes. Much has been achieved since February 2011. Working with Fletcher EQR and a dedicated team of contractors we have completed repairs on nearly 68,000 homes. To date, EQC staff have resolved 77 percent of just over 80,000 properties with land damage claims, made cash settlements for building damage to a further 97,840 properties, and cash settlements for about 186,000 contents claims. In total, all EQC settlements in Canterbury amount to more than $9 billion.

I’m proud of what we’ve achieved, but we know as an organisation we didn’t always get it right. The natural instinct in an emergency is to start responding quickly to the immediate crisis. After the September 2010 and February 2011 earthquakes we quickly focussed on carrying out emergency works to make homes safe, secure and sanitary. A key learning is that we need to spend more time engaging with the community and customers to better target those customers in most need. As a result, EQC now works more closely with local authorities and other government agencies – using community knowledge to deal more directly with customers most affected. We’ve made improvements to the way we work in Canterbury, as can be seen in the extensive

We are underway with fixing some house repairs that needed additional work, but we are prioritising customers who are yet to have a repair. We know there is still a job to do and we are determined to see it through, using all the experience we have gained in the past five years.

EQC awards $1 million to natural disaster researchers Understanding natural hazard risks and how to manage them is taking another step forward, thanks to $1 million of new EQC-funded research projects. EQC contributes $16 million altogether, every year for research to build knowledge about New Zealand’s natural hazards and how to manage them. The latest round of EQC’s Biennial Research Grants Programme attracted 118 applicants. Three of the 15 recipients are Canterbury-based geological researchers, and many of the projects are ongoing collaborations with GeoNet, NZ’s geological hazard monitoring system. Meet Patricia Keith, EQC General Manager of Customer and Claims … Leading the earthquake recovery for Telecom in Christchurch struck a chord with EQC’s new General Manager of Customer and Claims, Trish Keith, that led to her taking up the challenge of a new role at EQC. “The EQC job was enticing in that it was dynamically complex, based in

Christchurch, and I could once again participate in the Canterbury recovery,” she says. Born in Canterbury, Trish grew up in Burnside, Christchurch, with memories of hot summers spent swimming at Jellie Park Pool and cycling into what seemed like head winds both ways along Memorial Avenue to attend St Margaret’s College. She has lived in Sumner for the last 26 years where she helped raise five children with her husband, Tony. When the 22 February 2011 Christchurch earthquake occurred Trish was in Auckland. She was flown that day into Christchurch by helicopter, because as Telecom’s General Manager Customer Experience, part of her role was leadership of Telecom’s 111 call centre. Her initial sights of Christchurch, as the helicopter landed in Linwood Park, people’s expressions on faces, and her eerie experience of the city centre inside the cordon as Telecom began swiftly

getting Christchurch business units up and running, and working alongside Chorus to get the telephone network going was indescribable. “I was in tears often – we all were. Men, women … but we had a big job to do and we got on with it,” she said.

Christchurch and their biggest fear was – if a quake happened, they might not be able to get to their families. In response, she relocated people from one big Telecom office into smaller suburban offices throughout Christchurch, close to public transport links.

“My abiding memory of that earthquake was that, until I reached Wellington on my journey south to Christchurch, I had not known where any of my family were and I remember that cold dread. I don’t ever want to feel that again.

So what does Trish think she brings to EQC? “I bring my unrelenting focus on customer experience and my 25 years leadership experience of large teams. I am also a decision-maker because I don’t do procrastination well.

“The experience of the earthquakes totally changed small, daily living habits. I always keep the jug and other containers full of water at home because I never want to go without water again. I never let the car petrol go under halfway without refuelling – we all changed after the earthquakes.”

New campus for tertiary students Tertiary education provider Vision College is moving to Hazeldean Road over the summer break.

ampus Principal Gary Taylor said, “Having operated out of an earthquake-damaged building in Manchester St for some time now, we are delighted to have found the perfect building and location.” The new building, on the south side of Hagley Park, was recently vacated by Deloittes, and will be fully furnished and equipped by the time of the first courses starting on the second of February. “Education is the key to getting a good job now,” says Taylor, “and we can boast outstanding outcomes from our programmes. By way of example, 88 per cent of our web development and software engineering graduates from our four nation-wide campuses get great jobs in their respective fields.” Vision College is also well known for its counselling degree, as well as the highly successful Early Childhood teaching programmes, among others. Taylor says, “I know one of the key features that attracts students to us is the

smaller class sizes and personal level of tuition. We are very much a tutor-lead provider with a lot of one-on-one tuition given. There are a lot of students that like that environment ahead of large lecture theatre style.” A separately branded component of the operation is Trainme, which will also relocate to the new building. Trainme offers free foundation level programmes to those aged 16 to 19. The two courses on offer for a February start are the well named the #Ultimate Career Taster and Security forces training. The #Ultimate is designed for those who don’t want to go back to school and would like to get credits towards NCEA and experience a range of career options, including getting their driver’s licence. The Security course is very popular with those wanting a career in uniform such as the military, police or security industry, being a very physically challenging course. New courses - good for business Graduate to head chef Majors in retail management, personal financial planning and supply chain logistics are being offered for the first time at CPIT Aoraki this year.

Three new specialisations in the Bachelor of Applied Management are offering students new opportunities to help them get started in business. The majors, consisting of Personal Financial Management, Supply Chain Logistics and Retail Management, are designed to meet the growing needs of industry and students throughout the Canterbury region. “All of our training includes practical, industry experience, which means that we are very aware of what businesses and the community needs in terms of skills and training,” Business Head of Department Dr Teresa Schwellnus said. The major in Personal Financial Management provides a pathway to full membership of the Institute of Financial Advisers (IFA), and enables students to apply to become a Certified Financial PlannerCM (CFPCM). The programme was put together with the assistance of the IFA and specifically meets the needs of the industry for specialist financial training. “These are good qualifications that go beyond what’s expected and are part of increasing the upskilling of the profession,” IFA Chair Michael Dowling said. Another good example of CPIT Aoraki responding to the needs of industry is the major in Supply Chain Logistics. The course is a natural extension of courses for operations and production management. “The course is equally valuable if you are managing a farm, a supermarket, a

CPIT Aoraki courses also give people in full-time and part-time employment the opportunity to gain qualifications while working. Being a chef allows me to work with my hands and make people happy. He first finished a certificate in cookery and decided to undertake a specialised Diploma in Cookery. In two years’ time he went from being a student to head chef and even a teacher. “A student from CPIT Aoraki is doing her training here. She just had a couple of assessments with me, learning to make mayonnaise for example. I like teaching and passing on what I know, although I am still learning myself.” James emphasises the importance of studying. You learn the most when you combine both.” A moment James brightly remembers during his studies was running the CPIT Aoraki Visions restaurant. “One of the highlights was running the Visions restaurant on campus. You run the kitchen, are under pressure and you learn a lot. I also did a degustation dinner where the class had to come up with a 5 course meal. It was amazing to make your own menu and get paying customers”. Now this is James’ daily life, creating menus and running a kitchen. He couldn’t have wished for anything better. “I am very happy where I am. Christchurch School of Music The Christchurch School of Music has started 2016 with a new building, a new website and a whole new look.

fter a busy year in 2015 when the School celebrated its Diamond Jubilee the CSM is in good heart and looking forward to a fantastic year of music making in 2016. From pre-schoolers to septuagenarians, the CSM caters for a wide range of ages and musical styles offering opportunities for group or individual tuition in all instruments and an ensemble to suit everyone. From orchestras, choirs, jazz and rock bands, world music ensembles, wind ensembles and concert bands every taste is catered for.

All ensembles take part in regular concerts including Saturday soirees and the popular annual Showcase Concert. Recitals where individuals can perform are also held regularly.
