Eroding stopbanks pose threat for residents FRASER WALKER-PEARCE

South New Brighton and Southshore residents say their safety is at risk during a storm or high tide event, because the estuary’s emergency stopbanks are eroding. Residents’ associations for the areas are lobbying the Burwood-Pegasus Community Board for repairs to the stopbanks, saying the city council needs to urgently install more flood protection. The community board has requested a meeting with city

council staff. The stopbanks, which line the eastern side of the estuary in South New Brighton and Southshore were raised and widened in a “temporary fashion after the earthquakes. South Brighton Residents’ Association chairman Hugo Kristinsson said the stopbanks are slowly eroding, and pose a serious threat to safety. He said the extensions were installed by Civil Defence because the land had sunk as a result of the earthquakes meaning the area was more at risk of

flood inundation. Mr Kristinsson said he had found out through Official Information Act requests, that the stopbanks may not be up to scratch. “Because of that, they are eroding away, he said. Southshore Residents’ Association chairman Bill Simpson said flood protection was needed urgently. He said in March 2014 the stopbanks were breached by a “perfect storm and was worried that would happen again if the city council chose not to act.

Community board member Tim Sintes said affected residents need answers from the city council. “They’ve been left in limbo. When you look at the money that was spent at Flockton Basin for the same thing, it makes you wonder why that isn’t happening here, he said. City councillor Glenn Livingstone agreed that the stopbanks were in a bad condition. He said it was unfair that parts of the estuary like Ferrymead and Redcliffs were given better protection than South New

Brighton and Southshore. “I know the area Hugo is talking about, and if the other side of the estuary gets protection, then why shouldn’t the east side? he said. He would work on an urgent solution with city council staff. HAVE YOUR SAY Are you worried about flooding risk near where you live? Do you agree that it is unfair the stopbanks on others part of the estuary are in better condition? Email fraser.walker@ starmedia.kiwi

QE II memories put to paper Photos, stories record history of facility FRASER WALKER-PEARCE

An image of a fire raging through the racecourse grandstand at QE II is just one of hundreds of photos that have been gathered to make a book of the now demolished site. New Brighton resident Jo Zervos has made the book called QE II Memories to show the history of QE II and is expected to be published today, a week before the anniversary of the February 22 earthquake. The facility was demolished in 2012 after earthquake damage. The Eastern Sports and Recreation Centre will be built there. Ms Zervos was part of the ‘Keep QE II in the East’ group that has fought to see the facility stay in the eastern suburbs after the earthquakes. Ms Zervos has spent years compiling more than 100 pages of memories and stories of the now-demolished QE II. She said it has been a dream

and fundraising regarding QE II. Their involvement in the park goes back well before the Commonwealth Games hosting rights were granted,” she said. She also plans to make another book in the future, a more formal one than this newly released one. She drew inspiration for the look and design of the book from an old North New Brighton School year book. “I just loved all the colours and the vibrancy of their year book, and I thought that it was a great way to do my own,”

CAR FIRE A car that was deliberately set on fire in the Pak’nSave Wainoni car park is believed to have been lit by youths. A fire service spokesman said that last Monday at about 11.30pm the Wainoni fire crew were alerted to a fire in the supermarket’s car park. No one was injured, but the fire was deemed as suspicious and passed on to police. SMOKE FILLS HOUSES A smoke-filled house in Aranui was “lucky to not catch fire”, said a Fire Service spokesman. The incident was reported at about 8.45am on Wednesday to the Wainoni fire crew. They responded to the scene on Hampshire St, to find the house “full of smoke.” Nobody was in the house at the time, and the source of the smoke was identified as a pot that had been left on the stove. The pot was removed and the house was ventilated.

to be able to finally hold a copy of her own book. “It’s years of work that has finally paid off ,” she said. “Unfortunately I didn’t get to talk to everyone that I wanted to, because I wanted it to be ready for the anniversary of the February 22 earthquake,” she said. Her own favourite memory of QE II is of her family’s involvement in the facility’s early days. “My father was the president of the North New Brighton Residents Association, who all did so much groundwork

RIDING IN TANDEM: Funky bikes were among the many attractions at the I Love New Brighton event at Thomson Park. PHOTO: RAEWYN MURRAY PHOTOGRAPHY

Showing love for New Brighton More than 4000 people took part in the annual I Love New Brighton event last Monday. The event, held on Waitangi Day, celebrated the New Brighton and wider eastern community at Thomson Park. Highlights included sidecar rides, the New Brighton Volunteer Fire Brigade’s demonstrations, a giant slide, and a petting zoo for the kids.

Successful start to pier fishing ban

FRASER WALKER-PEARCE

There were also live performances from the Moorhouse Dance Studio, Takumi Japanese Drummers, and local youth band OutLoud, a group of 16-year-old girls. The event was co-ordinated by Youth Alive Trust, New Brighton Project, Rawhiti Community Sports Inc and the Burwood-Pegasus Recreation Team.

The fishing ban on New Brighton Pier got off to a good start last Sunday. It was the first day of a yearlong one day a week fishing and crabbing ban on New Brighton Pier. No fines or warnings were issued by the city council. This comes after a decision by the Burwood-Pegasus Community Board in December, which saw it decide to ban fishing and crabbing off the pier every Sunday, from 10am to 5pm for a

whole year. A city council spokeswoman said in the first weekend, there were no breaches. New Brighton resident Bob Andrews said the ban was a “good start.” “The whole idea when they were talking about building a pier was to have it for the kids, and not for the fishermen,” he said. New signs have been put up on the pier and around the area to let the public know that the ban is now in force. The council has also hired ‘pier hosts’ who can answer

What’s proposed

Want to find out more or got a question?

More land round the Hornby, Linwood and Papanui commercial centres is proposed for rezoning to residential meduim density. This means smaller section sizes and townhouse or multi-unit style developments will be allowed in this proposed zone. This will enable more households in the area and a greater choice of housing options - for families, couples and single people.

Letters have been sent to owners and occupiers of houses in or next to the area proposed for rezoning.

Why do we need to change? We need to plan for future growth in Christchurch. The Independent Hearings Panel wants to create the potential for 23,700 more dwellings by 2028. The panel has directed the Council to notify larger areas of Hornby, Linwood and Papanui than originally proposed for residential medium density so that possible rezoning can be tested through the submission and hearing process.

You can phone us at 941 5986 and speak to a district plan review planner, or email us at dpreview@ccc.govt.nz You can read the full proposal and the supporting evaluation report at proposeddistrictplan.ccc.govt.nz/ additionalproposals There is a hard copy (reference only) at each Council service centre and library.

Ways to make a submission We encourage you to find out what’s proposed and how you might be affected. It’s important for the Independent Hearings Panel to know if you support or oppose the proposal. You can do this by making a submission: Online - proposeddistrictplan.ccc.govt.nz On paper - submission forms are available at Council service centres and libraries. Email - you may prefer to type your submission - use the same format as the printed submission form, and email it to us at dpreview@ccc.govt.nz

You can view the proposal online at proposeddistrictplan.ccc.govt.nz/additionalproposals Hard copies are available for viewing at Council service centres and libraries. The proposed

questions and ensure that no one tries to fish between the restricted hours on Sundays. A council spokeswoman said the pier hosts will have backup support “if needed.” The community board has also asked for funding through the city council’s 2017 Annual Plan to look into building a separate fishing platform off the end of the pier. Have your say Were you down at the pier on Sunday? Did you see the difference with the fishing ban in place. Email fraser.walker@ starmedia.kiwi

Voting for School celebrates opening $25,000 fund this week FRASER WALKER-PEARCE

Voting will take place this week on the city council’s controversial transitional project fund for New Brighton. Residents have been divided on the usefulness of the fund. Some say the $25,000 earmarked for projects like deck chairs and hammock are “patronising” to a suburb still suffering extensive earthquake damage to infrastructure. Others have backed the spend saying it will enhance the suburb and as the city council cannot reallocate money to another purpose, residents should back any investment in the suburb. Ideas for the $25,000 were discussed at a series of community meetings recently. Ideas put forth included sun shades, photo opportunities, art sculptures, and activities such as table tennis, outdoor cinemas, volleyball pits and barbecues. Now, residents will be able to vote for their favourite idea on

Wednesday or vote online. Burwood-Pegasus Community Board chairwoman Andrea Cummings said she had received only positive feedback with no complaints. “We got great feedback at the recent drop-in session and lots of interesting and fun ideas were discussed,” she said. City council head of urban design, regeneration and heritage Carolyn Ingles said concerns over rubbish and cleanliness of streets raised at the meetings would be addressed. “We’re working with the operations team at council and investigating the concerns that they have raised. What’s important is that the public know their concerns are being investigated,” she said. The drop-in voting session will be held on Wednesday February 17, 4.30-7.30pm, at the Burwood-Pegasus Community Board board room, on the corner of Beresford and Union Sts, New Brighton.

Rawhiti School’s kapa haka group took centre stage in its official opening on Friday. The $13.6m school was opened by Education Minister Hekia Parata, and a plaque was unveiled to mark the occasion. Rawhiti is the first of three

Having owned Mobil Wainoni for 13 years I have recently added a pizza takeaway to the business that will add a new direction in thinking for us. Nowadays you need to be more than just a “petrol station”. “Pandas Pizza” is open 7 days a week, Monday to Thursday 4pm until 9.30pm and Friday to Sunday 12 noon until 9.30pm. There are 10 pizzas on the menu including some of the classic pizzas, Meat Lovers, Bbq Chicken and Bacon, Apricot Chicken, Satay Chicken and Seafood. We also sell simple extras including fries, garlic breads and crumbed chicken strips, including other tempting items that we sell here at Mobil Wainoni. Being involved with Eagle Boys Pizza 15 years ago, I have tried to keep the menu simple and tasty, we make all our own pizza bases ourselves and make the pizzas fresh on demand. You can either order by telephone or come on in, waiting times are usually 7 to 10 minutes unless we are very busy as the cooking time for our pizzas in our rapid cook conveyor oven is only four and a half minutes. Our goal is to give a good product at an affordable price and make “Pandas Pizza” a great choice for a party, birthday or even just that weekly indulgence.

Readers respond to calls for the 70km/h speed zone to be dropped on Bridge St. Paul Robertson: As a resident of South Brighton for the last 35 years and a regular user of the walk I think protesting people have missed the point. The 70km/h sign is on the bridge side of the pathway. Therefore, all traffic is legally required to travel at 50km/h in both directions at the points of exit or entry to the track. Lynda Burdekin is totally wrong in saying that it is pointless having a 70km/h speed zone leading up to a roundabout. It is imperative at roundabouts that all traffic is able to enter at the same speed. Different entry speeds will result in more accidents. Reducing the limit to 50km/h would require the three other approaches to reduce their entry speeds to 50km/h also. This is neither acceptable nor feasible on what is a vital expressway and would result in unnecessary congestion. Furthermore people need to get real. They are crossing a road not a bridge or a defined crossing. Take care as you would crossing any road. Look both ways and proceed when clear. If they are deluded enough to

of money. I hope the councillor doesn’t get a pay rise for this idea. It’s tokenism in disguise. If the city council wants to make the area and people “feel good” they need to step up and put some decent dollars into investment. The Coast to Coast is going to be finishing in New Brighton this year – Beach Rd still has roadworks on it, supposedly their main access in? Perhaps they could divert down Bower Ave, round New Brighton Rd, over the Pages Rd Bridge, let me see, which one has the least road cones, pot holes and broken kerbs and channels? Oh of course, that’s SCIRT’s job. (I’m not criticizing SCIRT).

had a nasty big four-wheel-drive right on my tail and it was a bit of worry as to whether he would slow in time when I slowed down. Perhaps I feel more vulnerable than some people having had a few knocks on the rear end but quite apart from that, the distance is just not worth having a 70km/h zone. There is a similar situation in Marshland Rd, although no walking path. In between the Bunnings shopping complex lights, the QEII Drive lights and the new Mairehau Rd lights there are short 70km/h zones, with 50km/h signs just prior to the lights. Craziness.

see such a crossing as unsafe for them there are some simple solutions other than taking the dangerous step of reducing the limit to 50km/h which cause accidents at the roundabouts. 1. Shift the 70km/h sign 20m closer to the roundabout which means more time to decrease speed off the bridge and the increase to 70km/h at a later point. 2. Petition for a designated pedestrian crossing. 3. Police presence to catch anyone travelling over 50km/h.

Readers respond to $25,000 being allocated to New Brighton for transitional projects, that could include hammocks, deck chairs, urban garden, beach volleyball – but they wanted roads fixed first.

Wayne Hawker: It should be left as it is. The 70km/h speed limit matches with the limits on the adjacent ring road and the road through to Breezes Rd. 50km/h is not the appropriate speed limit from the roundabout to the bridge and vice versa.

Angela Barnet: I was speechless when I read about this proposal. I live on the east side. Some may think this is a nice “feel good” thing to do. Who are these people? At worst I think it’s patronising, at best it’s a waste

Lynette Birnie: I certainly do think the speed limit leading to Bridge St needs lowering. When driving up there the other day at just under 70km/h I

The city council needs to get real and get on with things that matter and make a real difference. I see that the roads around The Princess Margaret and lower Barrington St are looking lovely with their new tar seal. Ah but that’s for hospital ac-

Protecting resident’s rights Tim Sintes – Christchurch Coastal Residents United president, BurwoodPegasus Community Board member. I have had the privilege of being a beach side resident in Christchurch for all of my life. I am deputy chairman of the community based group Christchurch Coastal Residents United. On July 4 last year, the city council announced an unprecedented attack on the rights of 18,000 property owners through their proposed Replacement District Plan and the Coastal Hazards policy. This policy affected building rights now and into the future by making new building either discretionary or non-complying. CCRU was formed as an incorporated residents group to preserve and protect the rights and interests of coastal residents. We are property owners, business owners, developers, IT consultants, software develop-

ers, a marketing consultant, RMA consultant, a barrister, several architects and a doctor of mathematics. CCRU is actively engaged with the Government and the city council in developing a consistent and collaborative process of assessment for all New Zealand coastal communities, recognising each area has unique characteristics. CCRU organised a number of well attended meetings, worked to get the submission time extended and then through lobbying Government the Coastal Hazard overlays were removed from the proposed plan. The hazard overlays were based on the much criticised Tonkin & Taylor report. Independent experts have stated that this report is not fit for the purpose of making planning decisions. As LIM notations

are also based on the T&T report. Our goal is having these removed. As land information memorandum notations are also based on the report, we are working to have these removed. At present, due to CCRU pressure, the city council has agreed to peer review the report for a second time. Due to the questionable content of the report, CCRU is outraged that the high flood hazard management areas also based on the report are still in the proposed plan. CCRU recognises that climate change is real. We are working to establish an adaptive approach that measures what is occurring in real time while collaborating with affected communities and investigating a range of options. There is still much work to be done.

We asked if this action will make a difference to your view of the pier.

the view undisturbed by people fishing. Cheryl Smith – No, but I am sure it will mean a lot to the fish.

Beryl Starr – Yes, I would now go for a walk to the end of the pier on a Sunday.

Laurelle Burton – You mean I can actually take my kids for a walk down there without them gagging at the smell.

Christine Fisher – Great to see something being done about the fishing issue . . . way to go.

Suzanne Louis – A good reason to walk down the pier on a Sunday.

Karina Hendry – Yay! Total ban sounds great! Be nice to walk along the pier and enjoy

Shontelle Hackett – I used to fish here as a kid . . . sad.

The greater Christchurch Education Story Together, we’re working with schools, principals, teachers, parents and communities to improve education and raise achievement for all of greater Christchurch’s students and young people More than 1,200 new teaching spaces are being created and a further 1,200 are being repaired. Many schools are transforming how they teach, adopting innovative techniques and turning their classrooms into innovative learning environments. More teachers are working together to raise student achievement in reading, writing, mathematics and other subjects. Young people need skills such as digital fluency, problem-solving and the ability to work with others. These skills are best learnt by students when they are in innovative learning environments. Despite the challenges and difficulties that have faced our students, educators, schools and families over the past five years, student achievement continues to rise. Alongside parents, families, wh nau and the wider community we’re creating an innovative education network to support 21st century students.

Funeral directors garden gets silver FRASER WALKER-PEARCE

John Rhind Funeral Directors in Richmond has taken second place for its immaculate garden in the recent Garden City garden competition. The funeral directors, based on London St, took part in the Christchurch Beautifying Association’s Garden City Garden Competition. The stunning garden placed second for the Wallace Dalley Challenge Trophy, which was

the category for the best “commercial frontage” of up to 82.5m in length. They were pipped at the post for first place in the premier commercial category, by Foodstuffs South Island, on Main North Rd, Papanui. John Rhind Funeral Directors Richmond assistant manager Randal Law said after a two-year hiatus from the competition, it was nice to be involved again. “It’s nice to be involved with the beautifying association

competition again – and to get second place in our first year back, is very gratifying,” he said. Mr Law puts the garden’s upkeep down to the “dedicated and wonderful” gardeners. “They’re very dedicated to making the garden a lovely and welcoming place. I think my favourite part is the courtyard area in front of the chapel. It’s just such a nice peaceful serene place to gather before a ceremony,” he said.

Christian Gallen

Teaching life skills to youths Christian Gallen, Ngati Kahungunu, is the South Island co-ordinator for Attitude, a not-for-profit that gives health presentations to teenagers in schools across the city. He talks to Fraser Walker-Pearce about up-skilling parents, back flipping with Nitro Circus’ Travis Pastrana, and why he’s still a kid at heart Thanks for talking to me Christian. Tell me a bit about Attitude? I’m the South Island coordinator for Attitude, which is a hard thing to explain, but basically we’re New Zealand’s largest external health provider. So that means we give healthbased presentations to schools around the South Island. We cover mental health, relationships, skills for the real world, and a lot of other topics. I’ve been doing this job since 2009, and I still really enjoy it. I think I remember you guys from high school! I think we had presentations from a guy called James? Yeah, you probably would have! James is still here, we’re a small Christchurch-based team, just four of us. But the four of us managed to visit all high schools in the South Island last year. We also give programmes for intermediate schools. Have you had to deal with some pretty sad problems in your time? We’re really more focused on the preventative health side of things, so we like to think of ourselves as the signpost at the top of the mountain rather than the ambulance at the bottom. So instead we speak to a full assembly of kids, and that allows them to be more informed to make good decisions when situations arise. In the intermediate programme it’s all about

making friends and safety on the internet and things like that. Then when we get to high schools it’s more about mental health and relationships and things like that. So you live in New Brighton? What are the best parts of living there. My wife and I moved to North New Brighton at the end of 2014. We totally love it here, we always hang out with the neighbours and surf there as much as we can. We often run the dog up and down the beach,

and if we go away for a holiday or something our neighbours look after the chickens which is great. (Laughs) Oh good to hear. Tell me about your time with Nitro Circus. Were you involved in their tour? Yeah I was. I was the official tour reporter in 2015. I got the job, which was amazing, because to even get an interview you had to make a video submission. I made a cool video that kind of grabbed the attention, with a 1min bio about myself, then you had to spam all your mates to get behind you and vote for you, and get as many votes as you could. There were hundreds of people that entered, and I was the only Kiwi that made it into the top 100, and I snuck into the top 10, who all got an interview. And I was lucky enough to get the job after that. So I got to meet all the crew, got to go on the tour bus. So I became the tour guide as well, because they were all tourists in New Zealand and I just got to hang out with them which was amazing. What inspired you to try out for the Nitro Circus job? Well my mate and I made a movie called Death Cheaters where we’d jump around and do all sorts of stunts, and

it actually premiered at the wee cinema in Sumner. Being involved in that kind of stuff was just awesome. So I decided I’d go for this gig with Nitro. And do you do any of that stuff nowadays? We still organise paintball events out at the beach and in the forest with homemade slingshots and we buy paint balls and go at

it. You’d love it, it’s so much fun. I’m definitely a kid at heart. I probably would love that! What was your best experience with Nitro Circus? One of the best experiences I had with them, and I knew I was with them because I had climbed onto Travis Pastrana’s (American stunt performer and motorcross rider) shoulders, when we were on Waiheke Island, and he tried to back flip into the water from about 8m up. But of course that’s just not how physics works, so we kind of just belly flopped into the water. So funny – but so sore afterwards. They also taught me how to back flip a BMX bike; after every event I got to slide down the gigantic mega ramp; and I got to be on stage and give people high fives when they landed their tricks. That’s crazy, I’m so jealous. You must have been gutted

when it finished? It was so depressing when it finished, but I was just so mentally and physically drained. I still keep in touch with them online, we message each other a bit, and I get a few Snapchats from them. I also got to run their social media while they were on tour, which has about six million fans. So there was a bit of paper work to do it but so worth it. Pretty cool that you have Travis Pastrana’s details on your phone, not many people can say that. I heard that you also play in a band? Yes, I do, I play in a local band called Merchants of Flow, and we play reggae music. We’ve been playing shows regularly in Christchurch every year for quite a few years, but some of them have had kids now or gone overseas and we haven’t played a gig in months. Wasn’t expecting to hear you’re a reggae player. What about your own schooling life? Well I’m 29 now, but I went to Redwood Primary, before my parents shipped me off to Middleton Grange for high school, which was a long bus ride every day. And after high school, did you go to university? Yes, after high school I went to Canterbury University where I was dead set on becoming a teacher. I was also quite passionate about Te Reo Maori studies and it was a good way into the education system. So I majored in Te Reo Maori, and I was offered the job at Attitude. Did you have good lecturers for Maori at university? Yes. I had some fantastic lecturers, they were Junior and Komene, I don’t actually know their last names. Are your family from Hawkes Bay? No, no – from Canterbury. There’s four of us, I’m the youngest – I have a big brother and two older sisters in that order.

HARD WORK: Students from Snell house work together to get an activity done.

LOCAL Schools

The Shirley Boys’ High School tabloid sports day brought a kaleidoscope of colour to Burwood Park, thanks to the four houses competing. Led by Mr Gwylim Richards, activities included the cone sprint, football goal shoot, a zig-zag rugby relay, petanque, tennis ball target, quoits, a sack race, egg and spoon race, plank relay, shot put and cricket wicket throw. The tabloids created an opportunity to begin the house competition for year 10 to 13 boys and introduced it to the year 9s. Groups moved through the various activities hoping to notch up maximum points in the allocated time before the siren sounded and they moved onto the next activity. On the day, Aoraki house took first place, followed by Mullins in second, then Blake in third and Snell took fourth.

Flame files Stay close to your stoves MARK THOMAS – FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER

At the risk of opening the floodgates it has been notable that we’ve had an extremely quiet summer and the 70-odd calls attended in the last week were fewer than those in a fine week mid-winter. Some of this can probably be attributed to see-saw summer weather. But I wonder if the message about treating heat and fire with the respect they demand has got through to enough people to make a difference in the statistics. We will see in the weeks ahead. Unfortunately, there are still those who suffer smoke inhalation themselves and the stink of smoke permeating their curtains and furniture from pots left on

the stove. A lady in Dallington fell asleep last Friday afternoon with food cooking and was fortunate the neighbours smelt smoke and, knowing she was inside, entered her house and helped her out. She was treated by ambulance with no apparent long-term effects. But she was lucky. Others in the past have not had the fortune to have such observant neighbours. Then on Wednesday the occupants of a house in Hampshire St, Aranui, appeared to have headed off to work with a pot still boiling on the stove. An hour later the neighbours have called in reporting smoke. The Wainoni crew forced entry and turned the stove off. There was no fire.

EQC UPDATE

KEEPING YOU INFORMED | FEBRUARY 2016

Remembering 22 February five years on

EQC supports city forum Seismics and the City is an annual forum that involves representatives of public, private and community sector organisations from Canterbury and further afield engaged in the rebuild of Christchurch. With the theme Shaping Canterbury’s future now: Collaboration – Regeneration – Innovation, this forum provides a showcase for inspiring case studies featuring new ways of working, innovative new products and services and gives organisations the opportunity to demonstrate business and thought leadership.

A message from the Earthquake Commission’s Chief Executive Ian Simpson on the fifth anniversary of the February 22 Canterbury earthquake. On Monday the 22nd we will pause to remember the tragic events of five years ago and, in particular, the 185 people who lost their lives. The Earthquake Commission has never forgotten the impact of that day on the residents of Canterbury and the rest of New Zealand. We are well aware of what we still need to do to assist the Canterbury recovery and are already working on the lessons we have learnt from the Canterbury earthquakes. Much has been achieved since February 2011. Working with Fletcher EQR and a dedicated team of contractors we have completed repairs on nearly 68,000 homes. To date, EQC staff have resolved 77 percent of just over 80,000 properties with land damage claims, made cash settlements for building damage to a further 97,840 properties, and cash settlements for about 186,000 contents claims. In total, all EQC settlements in Canterbury amount to more than $9 billion.

15

I’m proud of what we’ve achieved, but we know as an organisation we didn’t always get it right. The natural instinct in an emergency is to start responding quickly to the immediate crisis. After the September 2010 and February 2011 earthquakes we quickly focussed on carrying out emergency works to make homes safe, secure and sanitary. A key learning is that we need to spend more time engaging with the community and customers to better target those customers in most need. As a result, EQC now works more closely with local authorities and other government agencies – using community knowledge to deal more directly with customers most affected. We’ve made improvements to the way we work in Canterbury, as can be seen in the extensive

Unresolved issues? PHONE OUR COMMUNITY CONTACT TEAM Any customers with unresolved EQC issues should phone 0800 326 243 and make a booking to speak to one of the EQC Community Contact Team (CCT). Since September 2011, the CCT have helped answer customer’s earthquake-related questions and, where needed, manage claims through the EQC process to resolve issues, says EQC Customer Resolutions Manager for Christchurch, Paula McPhail. Customer Service Consultants can provide professional, accurate, and timely information – this is specialised expertise gained from working in many other areas of EQC and Fletcher EQR. “The team has skilled personnel who are well equipped to answer questions about specific circumstances,” Paula says. The Community Contact Team conducts appointments with customers at any of the following locations or, by prior arrangement, at a customer’s home. EQC locations for meetings: — Addington – Monday-Friday, EQC Addington — Fendalton Library – Wednesday, 190 Clyde Road — Kaiapoi – Tuesday, (please phone 0800 639 000 to book at this venue), Waimakariri Earthquake Support Services, Cass Street.

customer and community engagement we have been carrying out over the last year as part of settling claims for increased flooding and liquefaction vulnerability land damage. The fifth anniversary is also a time to look ahead. EQC’s work in Canterbury will continue until all residential earthquake claims are completed (including remedial work). Our priority in 2016 is to complete all first-time home repairs and resolve remaining land claims.

EQC is once again pleased to support this valuable forum with its emphasis on safety and sustainability and cross-sector knowledge sharing. Special registration rates are available for representatives of community organisations involved in the rebuild and for interested individuals – www.smartnet.co.nz/ seismics-2016/registration-form

We are underway with fixing some house repairs that needed additional work, but we are prioritising customers who are yet to have a repair. We know there is still a job to do and we are determined to see it through, using all the experience we have gained in the past five years.

EQC awards $1 million to natural disaster researchers Understanding natural hazard risks and how to manage them is taking another step forward, thanks to $1 million of new EQC-funded research projects. EQC contributes $16 million altogether, every year for research to build knowledge about New Zealand’s natural hazards and how to manage them. The latest round of EQC’s Biennial Research Grants Programme attracted 118 applicants. Three of the 15 recipients are Canterbury-based geological researchers, and many of the projects are ongoing collaborations with GeoNet, NZ’s geological hazard monitoring system. EQC congratulates the following recipients of this year’s grants: JC Gaillard, Minghao Li, Vicki Moon, Andy Nicol, David Barrell, Chris Van Houtte, Jonathan Carey, Jennifer Eccles, Sigrun Hreinsdottir, Simon Barker, Marco Brenna & Elaine Smid, Bruce Christenson, Ben Kennedy, Xiaoming Wang and Kate Clark.

One of the 15 grant recipients, Ben Kennedy from the University of Canterbury.

The next round will open for applicants in 2017. Visit www.eqc.co.nz for further information.

Meet Patricia Keith, EQC General Manager of Customer and Claims … Leading the earthquake recovery for Telecom in Christchurch struck a chord with EQC’s new General Manager of Customer and Claims, Trish Keith, that led to her taking up the challenge of a new role at EQC. “The EQC job was enticing in that it was dynamically complex, based in

Christchurch, and I could once again participate in the Canterbury recovery,” she says. Born in Canterbury, Trish grew up in Burnside, Christchurch, with memories of hot summers spent swimming at Jellie Park Pool and cycling into what seemed like head winds both ways along Memorial Avenue to attend St Margaret’s College. She has lived in Sumner for the last 26 years where she helped raise five children with her husband, Tony. When the 22 February 2011 Christchurch earthquake occurred Trish was in Auckland. She was flown that day into Christchurch by helicopter, because as Telecom’s General Manager Customer Experience, part of her role was leadership of Telecom’s 111 call centre. Her initial sights of Christchurch, as the helicopter landed in Linwood Park, people’s expressions on faces, and her eerie experience of the city centre inside the cordon as Telecom began swiftly

getting Christchurch business units up and running, and working alongside Chorus to get the telephone network going was indescribable. “I was in tears often – we all were. Men, women … but we had a big job to do and we got on with it,” she said.

Christchurch and their biggest fear was – if a quake happened, they might not be able to get to their families. In response, she relocated people from one big Telecom office into smaller suburban offices throughout Christchurch, close to public transport links.

“My abiding memory of that earthquake was that, until I reached Wellington on my journey south to Christchurch, I had not known where any of my family were and I remember that cold dread. I don’t ever want to feel that again.

So what does Trish think she brings to EQC? “I bring my unrelenting focus on customer experience and my 25 years leadership experience of large teams. I am also a decision-maker because I don’t do procrastination well.

“The experience of the earthquakes totally changed small, daily living habits. I always keep the jug and other containers full of water at home because I never want to go without water again. I never let the car petrol go under halfway without refuelling – we all changed after the earthquakes.”

“I want to get things done and done well so I want to make sure that my leadership team has all the skills and resources needed to clear up the last Canterbury claims,” Patricia says. Following that, it will be a matter of working with the EQC team to ensure we have an operating model that is customer focussed and able to flex for different events.

What she learned as a leader in that time was that communications is all important to staff. Trish led 1600 Telecom staff in

As a past EQC customer herself in the aftermath of the earthquakes, Trish says

her experience was “okay but not good”. She also noted that EQC customer communications had “got better”. Asked how she planned to improve EQC’s reputation in Christchurch, she said the real proof would be for EQC to deliver what it promised – to complete its work in Christchurch. “I am heartened to have met people in EQC determined to do good by Christchurch people, and that’s something I really want to show Christchurch – that EQC is a dynamic workplace with highly skilled people. “My brand of leadership is to carve a way for people to do their job well. This means making sure staff also receive the praise they deserve from the results they have achieved. It’s about completing the claims and repairs in Canterbury and doing it in a way that is respectful for customers and the staff who have been doing the hard yards from the very beginning.”

Effective natural skincare that is ideal for skin problems

M

ooGoo produce a full range of safe, natural skin and scalp products that are especially suited for those with skin problems. In these products, they only use top-quality, edible ingredients that are known to be highly effective and good for our skin. These active ingredients are only used in correct concentrations for effective results and not just added to look good on

the label. Because the MooGoo range is so safe and yet so effective is probably why it was rated the number one most preferred brand of non-prescription (non-steroid) creams for those suffering from skin problems in Australia. It is also recommended by many medical practitioners in Australia. As MooGoo products are safe and natural, they are ideal for long-term use from babies to adults. They are an effective alternative

or follow-up treatment to chemically based ointments. Although MooGoo products are commonly used by people with skin complaints like eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis, etc, the range of products is becoming increasingly popular for healthy skincare. The Skin Milk Udder Cream is the lightest of creams that can easily penetrate the skin with its beneficial ingredients, especially the milk protein which has been shown to increase skin elasticity and health.

e it sitting down with coffee or watching TV, in those few minutes, you can relieve your arthritic pain, aching or stiff joints, circulation problems, swollen ankles, night cramps, weak leg muscles and more with the Aircycle exerciser. “What a bargain and what a success,” wrote Jack Kingston who bought an Aircycle exerciser to improve his wife’s circulation problems, “and it’s so gentle on her aching legs.” According to exercise therapist Bruce Thompson, exercise does not have to involve elaborate equipment or trips to the gym. Often the simplest exercise is all that is required to relieve symptoms and improve health. “The Aircycle has changed my life,” Lorraine Bell wrote. “Yesterday, I walked 10 blocks!” To take two minutes, several times a day, may be the best resolution you can make this year, your easiest step to a year of better health. Aircycles are available in pharmacies. For more information and orders, visit www.aircycle.co.nz, call 04 569 5013, or post $39.90 to Aircycle, PO Box 45105 Waterloo, Lower Hutt 5042.

esearchers were amazed with the results of how beneficial a natural nutrient Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is to the human body. CoQ10 is a natural enzyme in the body’s cells that is essential for cell function, energy and survival. The heart, liver, kidneys and pancreas require large amounts of CoQ10 to function well. In a recent multi-country, double blind trial on the possible benefits of CoQ10 to protect against heart failure, 420 patients with severe heart failure were given CoQ10 or a placebo, and then followed for two years. It was found to the amazement of the researchers, the patients who received the CoQ10 had a 50 per cent reduction in an adverse cardiovascular event or death compared to the placebo patients. According to lead study author professor Mortensen, this study is the first in over

a decade to show a natural nutrient can reduce heart failure mortality, and CoQ10 should be added as a standard treatment for anyone with cardiovascular complaints. Statin drugs are used to treat many patients with cardiovascular problems, but these drugs also reduce CoQ10 levels further in the body. Symptoms of low CoQ10 in the body can be low energy and endurance, muscle pain, poor memory, concentration and poor heart function or heart failure. CoQ10 levels are known to decrease as we age, and many researchers believe keeping our levels up with this vital nutrient may help prevent many chronic diseases, including cancer. CoQ10 is available as a natural supplement to support good health. Further info is available at Marshall’s Health and Natural Therapy, 110 Seaview Road. Phone 388 5757.

New campus for tertiary students Tertiary education provider Vision College is moving to Hazeldean Road over the summer break.

C

ampus Principal Gary Taylor said, “Having operated out of an earthquake-damaged building in Manchester St for some time now, we are delighted to have found the perfect building and location.” The new building, on the south side of Hagley Park, was recently vacated by Deloittes, and will be fully furnished and equipped by the time of the first courses starting on the second of February. “Education is the key to getting a good job now,” says Taylor, “and we can boast outstanding outcomes from our programmes. By way of example, 88 per cent of our web development and software engineering graduates from our four nation-wide campuses get great jobs in their respective fields.” Vision College is also well known for its counselling degree, as well as the highly successful Early Childhood teaching programmes, among others. Taylor says, “I know one of the key features that attracts students to us is the

smaller class sizes and personal level of tuition. We are very much a tutor-lead provider with a lot of one-on-one tuition given. There are a lot of students that like that environment ahead of large lecture theatre style.” A separately branded component of the operation is Trainme, which will also relocate to the new building. Trainme offers free foundation level programmes to those aged 16 to 19. The two courses on offer for a February start are the well named the #Ultimate Career Taster and Security forces training. The #Ultimate is designed for those who don’t want to go back to school and would like to get credits towards NCEA and experience a range of career options, including getting their driver’s licence. The Security course is very popular with those wanting a career in uniform such as the military, police or security industry, being a very physically challenging course. New courses - good for business Graduate to head chef Majors in retail management, personal financial planning and supply chain logistics are being offered for the first time at CPIT Aoraki this year.

Three new specialisations in the Bachelor of Applied Management are offering students new opportunities to help them get started in business. The majors, consisting of Personal Financial Management, Supply Chain Logistics and Retail Management, are designed to meet the growing needs of industry and students throughout the Canterbury region. “All of our training includes practical, industry experience, which means that we are very aware of what businesses and the community needs in terms of skills and training,” Business Head of Department Dr Teresa Schwellnus said. The major in Personal Financial Management provides a pathway to full membership of the Institute of Financial Advisers (IFA), and enables students to apply to become a Certified Financial PlannerCM (CFPCM). The programme was put together with the assistance of the IFA and specifically meets the needs of the industry for specialist financial training. “These are good qualifications that go beyond what’s expected and are part of increasing the upskilling of the profession,” IFA Chair Michael Dowling said. Another good example of CPIT Aoraki responding to the needs of industry is the major in Supply Chain Logistics. The course is a natural extension of courses for operations and production management. “The course is equally valuable if you are managing a farm, a supermarket, a

shipping company or an airline company. Managing logistical complexity is vital for any competitive organisation,” Dr Schwellnus said. These courses are for people who want to enter industry with real world, practical skills and this is also the case for the major in Retail Management. The programme covers market development and sales, retail management, retail marketing, consumer behaviour and e-commerce. “The retail sector is constantly becoming more sophisticated and these papers will give students the most up to date skills and information,” Dr Schwellnus said. CPIT Aoraki courses also give people in full-time and part-time employment the opportunity to gain qualifications while working. The Centre for the Assessment of Prior Learning can offer students credits for professional experience towards these qualification. For more information visit www.cpit.ac.nz/business.

he CPIT graduate is head chef at The Cuban, the hip restaurant that opened last year in St Asaph Street. “I’ve been running this kitchen for five months now and it’s great. Being a chef allows me to work with my hands and make people happy. I love to make people happy, it is the best feeling to get a compliment from a customer.” It’s been two years since James graduated from CPIT. He first finished a certificate in cookery and decided to undertake a specialised Diploma in Cookery. In two years’ time he went from being a student to head chef and even a teacher. “A student from CPIT Aoraki is doing her training here. She just had a couple of assessments with me, learning to make mayonnaise for example. I like teaching and passing on what I know, although I am still learning myself.” James emphasises the importance of studying. Having the background when you enter the industry is necessary, he says. “Go and study! Many people in this industry don’t study but having a basic background is necessary. I would definitely recommend

young aspiring chefs to study at CPIT Aoraki and work part time. You learn the most when you combine both.” A moment James brightly remembers during his studies was running the CPIT Aoraki Visions restaurant. “One of the highlights was running the Visions restaurant on campus. You run the kitchen, are under pressure and you learn a lot. I also did a degustation dinner where the class had to come up with a 5 course meal. It was amazing to make your own menu and get paying customers”. Now this is James’ daily life, creating menus and running a kitchen. He couldn’t have wished for anything better. “I am very happy where I am. It is busy, but if you do something you love you never work a day.” To learn more about the Department of Hospitality and Service Industries, visit www.cpit.ac.nz or phone 0800 24 24 76 for more information.

Not only is this rare property a short drive or hill walk from Sumner Esplanade, but it is also an easy 15-minute drive from the central business district. Sumner is one of the most desirable and sought after lifestyle locations imaginable within the boundary of Christchurch. Facing northwest, this exceptional 610-square-metre site offers nothing short of spectacular views out over Sumner Beach, Pegasus Bay and over to the Southern Alps that can never be built out. Escape the city lifestyle and build your dream home here with the confidence of being located within a suburb of equally substantial developments. Sumner provides a unique geography that enhances a peaceful, diverse atmosphere provided by the rural setting at the back and the recreational beach at the front. It provides a unique opportunity to live on the edge of a busy city, yet be able to lie in bed to hear the sea crashing on the rocks with tuis and bellbirds singing in the treetops. Sumner further offers a wide range of walking and biking tracks, with ample opportunities to enjoy the breathtaking views of the mountains with the city in the same view. Safe for children, the popular swimming beach and pool reside alongside historic and iconic landmarks. And with

a wide selection of cafés, restaurants, entertainment, cinema and retail shopping, you’ll love living in this seaside suburb. Award-winning architecture starts with a unique and remarkable site. Dalman Architecture have already designed an urban sanctuary that enhances both the streetscape and the prominent site. Concept plans are available and as a multi-million dollar development, the grand design is to position a luxury 410sqm split level home firmly against the hillside. Maximising the use of the site and providing every living quarter and bedroom with unobstructed views, the final development, including the infinity lap pool and courtyard, would provide the most fortunate of owners a highly desired home and living environment worthy of the investment. Considerable expense incurred by the current owner has ensured your builder will enjoy the benefits of an ultimate building platform. Presented as a ready to build on site, all the difficult, timely and expensive hill site land projects are complete. Site access and off-street parking for several vehicles are formed. Terraced excavation into the bluestone rock is finished. Services including power, phone, water and sewer are now all tidy underground. And for future construction works, off-street truck parking and walk-on access is sorted. A recent change of direction by our vendors has opened up a remarkable blue chip opportunity for you to purchase in this tightly held enclave of homes. As they
