Billion-dollar spend up keeps business humming GEORGIA O’CONNOR-HARDING

Business is booming with 54 per cent of all retail spending occurring in the west and northwest of the city. A city council commissioned retail report showed in the year ending June 2015, about $1.54 billion was spent out in the west, with the north-west close behind on $1.2 billion. The largest increase in spending was in Banks Peninsula with an increase of 13.8 per cent. Since the February 2011 earthquake, Riccarton, Addington, Sydenham, Hornby and Middleton had become the main location where people worked after the central city was gutted of 50,000 workers. And it appears as though those workers and residents who have moved west are spending their dollars locally. The report said Christchurch cardholders spent 82.2 per cent at local merchants with the most money of $1.6 billion spent at su-

permarkets and specialised food stores. Food and beverage was the next in expenditure with $614 million. The Hub Hornby centre manager Jason Marsden said the expenditure was on the back of the growth that is happening in the residential market as well as more people working out west. â€œSo they’ll be coming down and patronising the shops at lunchtime . . . it drives money in the area as well.’’ He said large amounts of development in the industrial parts of Hornby and the inland port in Rolleston had helped. “There is mass amounts of industrial and business growth on this side as well as residential growth.â€? Expansion of the Hornby Working Men’s Club property portfolio of retail outlets completed last year with the opening of the Coffee Club. The Hornby Working Men’s Club owns about 3.9ha of the land from Carmen Rd to Denton Park.

Fitness teacher bows out at 91 GEORGIA O’CONNOR-HARDING

Iris Vallender taught young men how to be fit during World War 2 and performed a skipping demonstration to the then Princess Elizabeth. However, at 91, she has now decided it is time to finish up. After much convincing from her daughter, Mrs Vallender has decided it is time she “gave it up” after running a gentle aerobics class at the Upper Riccarton Methodist Church for 35 years. Described as “quite a character,” Mrs Vallender said it’s time to “wind it all down.” “I’m not exactly 20 any more” she said. Mrs Vallender will be celebrating her 92nd birthday in June. Born in the Isle of Wight, England, Mrs Vallender has been teaching “keep-fit” classes since she was 17. “I used to take a young boys class during the war. That’s where I got started.” She was chosen by the Isle of Wight County Council to go away to college to learn how to teach others fitness. Mrs Vallender has lived a busy life having played representative netball and football for the

BUS AND CAR COLLIDE One person was transported to Christchurch Hospital with moderate injuries after a collision between a bus and car. St John was alerted to the incident at 7.54am last Thursday. Three ambulances were sent to the scene on Yaldhurst Rd where 25 people were assessed but only the person in the car needed hospital treatment. CYCLIST HURT A cyclist in his 30s sustained moderate injuries after colliding with a car on the intersection between Russley Rd and Avonhead Rd. St John was alerted to the incident at 7.25am on February 9. The man was taken to Christchurch Hospital to have his injuries assessed.

Isle of Wight as well as performing a skipping demonstration for the Queen back when she was a princess, all before she moved to New Zealand. “I was small and quick but I am very slow and old now.” A jack of all trades, she even helped to build Spitfire fighter aircraft during the war. Her daughter Laraine Jaspers said it was a scary time as the Isle of Wight was bombed regularly.

“A lot of women had to do men’s work because there were none around.” Mrs Vallender moved with her husband and her two children to New Zealand in 1955 before starting a “keep-fit” class in the central city. She still goes on weekly walks with the City Ramblers group walking up to 10km. Ms Jaspers said convincing her mother to give up the classes and to take it easy on the fitness has

been a battle. “She is still totally independent. She is just as fit. She is on the go all the time but it is just time to wind it all down,” Mrs Jaspers said. Mrs Vallender was recognised for her efforts with a Community Services award back in 1995. A special morning tea was held at the Upper Riccarton Methodist Church to celebrate the longevity of Mrs Vallender’s wellloved classes.

PROTECT YOUR VALUABLES Canterbury police are encouraging drivers and passengers to take simple steps to ensure their vehicles are not targeted by opportunistic thieves. Constable Trevor Gurney said leaving valuables on display or not locking cars is tantamount to inviting an opportunistic thief to properties. Police and “Safer Christchurch” have joined forces to produce bright yellow “all valuables removed” hangers for drivers to display on their rear-view mirror in an effort to remind owners to remove valuables and lock their doors. Simple steps such as fitting a steering lock in addition to locking doors will deter thieves.

Communication Confidence Learning Laughter

A Hornby man who sent 321 threatening messages to his former boss has pleaded guilty to an unusual offence under new digital communications laws. Henare Pera Hohaia pleaded guilty to causing “serious emotional distress” at the district court on charges relating to threatening messages he sent his former manager. The woman had no contact with Hohaia for more than a year after he stopped working with her. She then discovered he had sent hundreds of private Facebook messages over a few months. They included threats, one

showing a picture of a firearm to the victim’s head, and some suggested Hohaia’s family members were stalking her. One was a threat to shoot her pet horses. Hohaia was released from Hillmorton Hospital ahead of his court appearance, after three weeks as a patient there. He remains an outpatient and was accompanied by a social worker in court. Hohaia could be liable for up to two years’ imprisonment and up to $50,000 in fines, under the new Harmful Digital Communications Act which came into effect in July. He will be sentenced on April 26.

Computers key in the modern world Hornby High School acting principal Jon Rogers talks about the way schools are upgrading in technology to keep up with the modern world. We have just come through the “back to school” phase of the year with several stories in the media about how expensive it is for families to equip their children with uniforms, stationery and, in recent times, a laptop or chromebook computer. This last item is a recent arrival on the list of requirements and at Hornby High School we appreciate the effort and sacrifice many parents have made to equip their children. Computers are a total gamechanger in education. Every student who has a computer, or even a smart phone, has all the knowledge and information in the world at their fingertips. Students are not reliant on the teacher to provide information or the right answer.

SOAP BOX Teachers are spending less time delivering traditional lessons from the front of the room and more time with individual students. We are now seeing whole schools built without a traditional classroom in sight. Such is the power of computers. We also know that computers can provide distraction and time wasting with social media and games, but back in the day the invention of the steam engine, bicycles and television were also said to signal the end of civilisation. Like these three examples, computers have a big impact on society. Our children must learn to use computers wisely and well or be left behind in the modern world. Effectively used, computers allow students to work indi-

vidually or in smaller groups, at their own pace, anywhere, anytime and with anyone. A YouTube clip about how to solve a maths equation can be viewed as many times as it takes until it is understood. Students who miss school through illness no longer need to miss important lessons as they are all accessible on line, anytime, all the time. Students can message teachers after school hours to check that they are on the right track. They can publish their work to mum, dad and nana or get feedback from the whole world. So at this time when the bank balance is low due to the Christmas, holiday, backto-school spend-up and you are wondering if buying that chromebook for your child was really necessary, take comfort from the thought that, if used well, you have given them a tool to help them succeed in the modern world. Have you had to get a digital device because schools now require it? Good or bad? Email georgia.oconnor@starmedia. kiwi

Last week the Western News asked readers what they thought of a call to boycott Te Hapua: Halswell Centre’s Wishbone cafe because the lease was given to a non-local business: Bob and Jenny Wilkinson – We totally support your excellent stance and let’s hope locals boycott the cafe. It is disgraceful of the council, and yes there should be some policy supporting local businesses. Food from Wellington? Gary Knight, Hoon Hay – As with the Auckland-based Christchurch operated Sydenham crematorium in recent years, the latest revelation of Wellingtonbased Wishbone leasing Te Hapua cafe in Halswell bears testimony to the blasé attitude of the city council by not retaining this lease for a local business. The hallmark of any community should be to engage through retail or lease options only local personnel for business opportunities inclusive of cafe’s in order to retain the inherent spirit of that community. Christchurch company Red Cafe, having venues in South Christchurch and Riccarton libraries, should surely have been given first consideration, having been the additional applicant for lease of Te Hapua cafe. property consultant manager Angus Smith noting diverse production, efficient systems and proven business etiquette, while admirable from a professional perspective, they are sentiments that are counterproductive and have incensed many in consideration of the food from Wishbone for this cafe being flown from Wellington in plastic packaging thus lacking any semblance of culinary appeal. The city council should always consider and grant preference to local business interests and personnel who contribute to council coffers in terms of rates in contrast to out of town entities offering nothing in this domain. This protocol should encompass all ventures inclusive of bars, cafe’s and restaurants along with any business opportunity requiring a retail or lease option city-wide to cement the concept of local community interaction. •More letters, page 8

your local Views A Halswell group is urging people to not go to Te Hapua: Halswell Centre’s Wishbone cafe because the lease was given to a Wellingtonbased business. We asked if it was a good move sticking up for local businesses or a storm in a tea-cup. Liz Hogg – I live in the area, within walking distance, and feel we have needed new life breathed into us. New World has a fabulous cafe recently built, now this one. Well done Wellington for providing work for the locals as well as giving Halswell a boost. Before the earthquake I felt I was living in a dying community, now it is becoming lively. Best wishes for a flourishing business, I support you wholeheartedly. Rachael David Lay – Are they employing local people? Then why boycott these people’s income? Sure, it would have been great to have had a local company gain the lease but if they still provide to our local economy through the provision of income, which then goes on to local spending, then all is not lost. Sophie Lackey – Wonderful news that Wishbone got the lease. Their food is wonderful, and in my opinion far superior to all it’s competitors, and it raises the bar for other catering companies. I hope to see Wishbone flourish in Christchurch. Competition is healthy. Sour grapes is not. Steve Batey – Agree. Pre-pack-

aged bland food, same happened at Jellie Park pool I think, chucking out a local operator if my memory is correct. Hope this is not going to happen at other libraries and other city council sites. Local food made to order and with flavour, and with any profits back into the local community. Jodi Wareing – Where’s the sustainability? Everything is pre-packaged, all of it is driven or flown to Christchurch from Wellington. That’s not sustainable. Why didn’t they offer the tender to a Christchurch business, local suppliers and less of an effect on our environment? The food is average and it’s far cheaper to walk two blocks and get a muffin or sandwich from New World. It’s ridiculous. Michelle Nottage – Gosh. Should people in Wellington boycott Christchurch companies? Bridget West – I would if I were there. Disgusting move local businesses have been through a tough time so should have been given it. Richard Perkovic – I’m sure they’re employing locally still. Can’t see the issue really. Julie Gaudin – Wishbone becoming a national brand is not a crime. I actually like being able to get food I can eat clearly labelled at Jellie Park.

Pressure is mounting on the city council to release controversial plans that could see Denton Park turned into a mega community facility with a pool. Last week we asked readers where they would like the facility to go. They respond: Pic Nic – Kyle Park, Warren Park, Wigram or one of the closed schools in the area, just not Denton. Traffic around there is already a nightmare and it seems to be the only sporting park that’s consistently used . . . best to leave it that way I think. Mary Williams – Kyle Park . . . there are four schools I can think of where the children could walk to the pool for swimming lessons. Michael Rae – Get rid of asbestos in the Kyle Park site and put it there. Close for school and with it was done right share some sort of

parking agreements. Win-win. Raymond Low – Good idea? Facilities are old and out-dated there anyway? And close to the mall so I think it would be a good hub for the Hornby region? The sports clubs using the area need a decision quickly and must be included in the new hub. Ange Downing – Pool can’t go in Kyle Park, it was a pit. Margaret Gamblin – What about the eastside, it’s always forgotten. Thanks Lianne Dalziel. Allan Williams – What about Sockburn Park? Maria Ngatai – Heaps of memories there . . . but advance . . . in prime position . . . never let developers near it.

Christian Gallen

All about attitude – Christian Gallen, Ngati Kahungunu, is the South Island co-ordinator for Attitude, a not-for-profit that gives health presentations to teenagers in schools across the city. He talks to Fraser Walker-Pearce about up-skilling parents, back flipping with Nitro Circus’ Travis Pastrana, and why he’s still a kid at heart Thanks for talking to me Christian. Tell me a bit about Attitude? I’m the South Island co-ordinator for Attitude, which is a hard thing to explain, but basically we’re New Zealand’s largest external health provider. So that means we give healthbased presentations to schools around the South Island. We cover mental health, relationships, skills for the real world, and a lot of other topics. I’ve been doing this job since 2009, and I still really enjoy it. I think I remember you guys from high school! I think we had presentations from a guy called James? Yeah, you probably would have! James is still here, we’re a small Christchurch-based team, just four of us. But the four of us managed

to visit all high schools in the South Island last year. We also give programmes for intermediate schools. Have you had to deal with some pretty sad problems in your time? We’re really more focused on the preventative health side of things, so we like to think of ourselves as the signpost at the top of the mountain rather than the ambulance at the bottom. So instead we speak to a full assembly of kids, and that allows them to be more informed to make good decisions when situations arise. In the intermediate programme it’s all about making friends and safety on the internet and things like that. Then when we get to high schools it’s more about mental health and relationships and things like that. Oh good to hear. Tell me about your time with Nitro Circus. Were you involved in their tour? Yeah I was. I was the official tour reporter in 2015. I got the job, which was amazing, because to even get an interview you had to make a video

submission. I made a cool video that kind of grabbed the attention, with a 1min bio about myself, then you had to spam all your mates to get behind you and vote for you, and get as many votes as you could. There were hundreds of people that entered, and I was the only Kiwi that made it into the top 100, and I snuck into the top 10, who all got an interview. And I was lucky enough to get the job after that. So I got to meet all the crew, got to go on the tour bus. So I became the tour guide as well, because they were all tourists in New Zealand and I just got to hang out with them which was amazing. What inspired you to try out for the Nitro Circus job? Well my mate and I made a movie called Death Cheaters where we’d jump around and do all sorts of stunts, and it actually premiered at the wee cinema in Sumner. Being involved in that kind of stuff was just awesome. So I decided I’d go for this gig with Nitro.

teaching young people life skills terwards. They also taught me how to back flip a BMX bike; after every event I got to slide down the gigantic mega ramp; and I got to be on stage and give people high fives when they landed their tricks. That’s crazy, I’m so jealous. You must have been gutted when it finished? It was so depressing when it finished, but I was just so mentally and physically drained. I still keep in touch with them online, we message each other a bit, and I get a few Snapchats from them. I also got to run their social media while they were on tour, which has about six million fans. So there was a bit of paper work to do it but so worth it. Pretty cool that you have Travis Pastrana’s details on your phone, not many people can say that. I heard that you also play in a band? Yes, I do, I play in a local band called Merchants of Flow, and we play reggae

FAMOUS MATES: Christian Gallen got the chance to meet Nitro Circus’ Travis Pastrana (above) when he became their tour reporter last year.

And do you do any of that stuff nowadays? We still organise paintball events out at the beach and in the forest with homemade slingshots and we buy paint balls and go at it. You’d love it, it’s so much fun. I’m definitely a kid at heart. I probably would love that! What was your best experience with Nitro Circus? One of the best experiences

I had with them, and I knew I was with them because I had climbed onto Travis Pastrana’s (American stunt performer and motorcross rider) shoulders, when we were on Waiheke Island, and he tried to back flip into the water from about 8m up. But of course that’s just not how physics works, so we kind of just belly flopped into the water. So funny – but so sore af-

music. We’ve been playing shows regularly in Christchurch every year for quite a few years, but some of them have had kids now or gone overseas and we haven’t played a gig in months. Wasn’t expecting to hear you’re a reggae player. What about your own schooling life? Well I’m 29 now, but I went to Redwood Primary, before my parents shipped me off to Middleton Grange for high school, which was a long bus ride every day. And after high

school, did you go to university? Yes, after high school I went to Canterbury University where I was dead set on becoming a teacher. I was also quite passionate about Te Reo Maori studies and it was a good way into the education system. So I majored in Te Reo Maori, and I was offered the job at Attitude. Did you have good lecturers for Maori at university? Yes. I had some fantastic lecturers, they were Junior and Komene, I don’t actually know their last names. Are your family from Hawkes Bay? No, no – from Canterbury. There’s four of us, I’m the youngest – I have a big brother and two older sisters in that order.

A student from Burnside has been learning the art of thinking on the spot as part of the Court Theatre’s improvisation programme. Danielle Smith along with Caomh Browne-Scott of Governors Bay from the Junior Youth Improv class has been mastering the art of making up stories right off the bat. She said two themes she will focus on this year is mental health and service. “Mental health is something extremely close to my heart and I feel an utmost urgency to

bring awareness of the importance of mental health because too many young adults in our community are falling victim to what is going on inside their head.” She said service is also a passion of hers and she is hoping to encourage other students to help the community in anyway they can. “A life lived to save others is

What’s proposed

Want to find out more or got a question?

More land round the Hornby, Linwood and Papanui commercial centres is proposed for rezoning to residential meduim density. This means smaller section sizes and townhouse or multi-unit style developments will be allowed in this proposed zone. This will enable more households in the area and a greater choice of housing options - for families, couples and single people.

Letters have been sent to owners and occupiers of houses in or next to the area proposed for rezoning.

Why do we need to change? We need to plan for future growth in Christchurch. The Independent Hearings Panel wants to create the potential for 23,700 more dwellings by 2028. The panel has directed the Council to notify larger areas of Hornby, Linwood and Papanui than originally proposed for residential medium density so that possible rezoning can be tested through the submission and hearing process.

You can phone us at 941 5986 and speak to a district plan review planner, or email us at dpreview@ccc.govt.nz You can read the full proposal and the supporting evaluation report at proposeddistrictplan.ccc.govt.nz/ additionalproposals There is a hard copy (reference only) at each Council service centre and library.

Ways to make a submission We encourage you to find out what’s proposed and how you might be affected. It’s important for the Independent Hearings Panel to know if you support or oppose the proposal. You can do this by making a submission: Online - proposeddistrictplan.ccc.govt.nz On paper - submission forms are available at Council service centres and libraries. Email - you may prefer to type your submission - use the same format as the printed submission form, and email it to us at dpreview@ccc.govt.nz

Scholarship success in geography, history A former Hillmorton High School student has received scholarships in both geography and history. James Adams, who was a year 13 student last year, was awarded the Woolhouse Scholarship at the school’s prizegiving at the end of the year. On top of that, he found out last week that he gained scholarship success in Level 3 geography and history. This placed him amongst the top achieving students in New Zealand. Scholarships are designed to challenge and motivate able students in New Zealand. James is now studying law, politics and international relations at the The University of Auckland, which he also received a scholarship to attend. Hillmorton High also gained other NZQA scholarships with Sophie Milne gaining one in geography and Liam Hayes a scholarship in dance.

Students had an 84 per cent pass rate for level 1 NCEA which is almost 10 per cent above the national level of all schools in New Zealand. Acting principal Jon Rogers said it was down to hard work

Effective natural skincare that is ideal for skin problems

M

ooGoo produce a full range of safe, natural skin and scalp products that are especially suited for those with skin problems. In these products, they only use top-quality, edible ingredients that are known to be highly effective and good for our skin. These active ingredients are only used in correct concentrations for effective results and not just added to look good on

the label. Because the MooGoo range is so safe and yet so effective is probably why it was rated the number one most preferred brand of non-prescription (non-steroid) creams for those suffering from skin problems in Australia. It is also recommended by many medical practitioners in Australia. As MooGoo products are safe and natural, they are ideal for long-term use from babies to adults. They are an effective alternative

or follow-up treatment to chemically based ointments. Although MooGoo products are commonly used by people with skin complaints like eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis, etc, the range of products is becoming increasingly popular for healthy skincare. The Skin Milk Udder Cream is the lightest of creams that can easily penetrate the skin with its beneficial ingredients, especially the milk protein which has been shown to increase skin elasticity and health.

Often the simplest exercise is all that is required to relieve symptoms and improve health. “The Aircycle has changed my life,” Lorraine Bell wrote. “Yesterday, I walked 10 blocks!” To take two minutes, several times a day, may be the best resolution you can make this year, your easiest step to a year of better health. esearchers were amazed with the results of how beneficial a natural nutrient Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is to the human body. CoQ10 is a natural enzyme in the body’s cells that is essential for cell function, energy and survival. The heart, liver, kidneys and pancreas require large amounts of CoQ10 to function well. In a recent multi-country, double blind trial on the possible benefits of CoQ10 to protect against heart failure, 420 patients with severe heart failure were given CoQ10 or a placebo, and then followed for two years. It was found to the amazement of the researchers, the patients who received the CoQ10 had a 50 per cent reduction in an adverse cardiovascular event or death compared to the placebo patients. According to lead study author professor Mortensen, this study is the first in over

a decade to show a natural nutrient can reduce heart failure mortality, and CoQ10 should be added as a standard treatment for anyone with cardiovascular complaints. Statin drugs are used to treat many patients with cardiovascular problems, but these drugs also reduce CoQ10 levels further in the body. Symptoms of low CoQ10 in the body can be low energy and endurance, muscle pain, poor memory, concentration and poor heart function or heart failure. CoQ10 levels are known to decrease as we age, and many researchers believe keeping our levels up with this vital nutrient may help prevent many chronic diseases, including cancer. CoQ10 is available as a natural supplement to support good health. Further info is available at Marshall’s Health and Natural Therapy, 110 Seaview Road. Phone 388 5757.

New campus for tertiary students Tertiary education provider Vision College is moving to Hazeldean Road over the summer break.

C

ampus Principal Gary Taylor said, “Having operated out of an earthquake-damaged building in Manchester St for some time now, we are delighted to have found the perfect building and location.” The new building, on the south side of Hagley Park, was recently vacated by Deloittes, and will be fully furnished and equipped by the time of the first courses starting on the second of February. “Education is the key to getting a good job now,” says Taylor, “and we can boast outstanding outcomes from our programmes. By way of example, 88 per cent of our web development and software engineering graduates from our four nation-wide campuses get great jobs in their respective fields.” Vision College is also well known for its counselling degree, as well as the highly successful Early Childhood teaching programmes, among others. Taylor says, “I know one of the key features that attracts students to us is the

smaller class sizes and personal level of tuition. We are very much a tutor-lead provider with a lot of one-on-one tuition given. There are a lot of students that like that environment ahead of large lecture theatre style.” A separately branded component of the operation is Trainme, which will also relocate to the new building. Trainme offers free foundation level programmes to those aged 16 to 19. The two courses on offer for a February start are the well named the #Ultimate Career Taster and Security forces training. The #Ultimate is designed for those who don’t want to go back to school and would like to get credits towards NCEA and experience a range of career options, including getting their driver’s licence. The Security course is very popular with those wanting a career in uniform such as the military, police or security industry, being a very physically challenging course. New courses - good for business Graduate to head chef Majors in retail management, personal financial planning and supply chain logistics are being offered for the first time at CPIT Aoraki this year.

Three new specialisations in the Bachelor of Applied Management are offering students new opportunities to help them get started in business. The majors, consisting of Personal Financial Management, Supply Chain Logistics and Retail Management, are designed to meet the growing needs of industry and students throughout the Canterbury region. “All of our training includes practical, industry experience, which means that we are very aware of what businesses and the community needs in terms of skills and training,” Business Head of Department Dr Teresa Schwellnus said. The major in Personal Financial Management provides a pathway to full membership of the Institute of Financial Advisers (IFA), and enables students to apply to become a Certified Financial PlannerCM (CFPCM). The programme was put together with the assistance of the IFA and specifically meets the needs of the industry for specialist financial training. “These are good qualifications that go beyond what’s expected and are part of increasing the upskilling of the profession,” IFA Chair Michael Dowling said. Another good example of CPIT Aoraki responding to the needs of industry is the major in Supply Chain Logistics. The course is a natural extension of courses for operations and production management. “The course is equally valuable if you are managing a farm, a supermarket, a

shipping company or an airline company. Managing logistical complexity is vital for any competitive organisation,” Dr Schwellnus said. These courses are for people who want to enter industry with real world, practical skills and this is also the case for the major in Retail Management. The programme covers market development and sales, retail management, retail marketing, consumer behaviour and e-commerce. “The retail sector is constantly becoming more sophisticated and these papers will give students the most up to date skills and information,” Dr Schwellnus said. CPIT Aoraki courses also give people in full-time and part-time employment the opportunity to gain qualifications while working. The Centre for the Assessment of Prior Learning can offer students credits for professional experience towards these qualification. For more information visit www.cpit.ac.nz/business.

he CPIT graduate is head chef at The Cuban, the hip restaurant that opened last year in St Asaph Street. “I’ve been running this kitchen for five months now and it’s great. Being a chef allows me to work with my hands and make people happy. I love to make people happy, it is the best feeling to get a compliment from a customer.” It’s been two years since James graduated from CPIT. He first finished a certificate in cookery and decided to undertake a specialised Diploma in Cookery. In two years’ time he went from being a student to head chef and even a teacher. “A student from CPIT Aoraki is doing her training here. She just had a couple of assessments with me, learning to make mayonnaise for example. I like teaching and passing on what I know, although I am still learning myself.” James emphasises the importance of studying. Having the background when you enter the industry is necessary, he says. “Go and study! Many people in this industry don’t study but having a basic background is necessary. I would definitely recommend

young aspiring chefs to study at CPIT Aoraki and work part time. You learn the most when you combine both.” A moment James brightly remembers during his studies was running the CPIT Aoraki Visions restaurant. “One of the highlights was running the Visions restaurant on campus. You run the kitchen, are under pressure and you learn a lot. I also did a degustation dinner where the class had to come up with a 5 course meal. It was amazing to make your own menu and get paying customers”. Now this is James’ daily life, creating menus and running a kitchen. He couldn’t have wished for anything better. “I am very happy where I am. It is busy, but if you do something you love you never work a day.” To learn more about the Department of Hospitality and Service Industries, visit www.cpit.ac.nz or phone 0800 24 24 76 for more information.
