Trust gives a real life history lesson

Primary school students have been given a heck of a history lesson and from this weekend it’s open to the public. The Dramatix Theatre Development Trust – made up of locals – has built a reputation for its Anzac Experience, formally called Lest We Forget, held each year around Anzac Day. But this year they’ve added a new dimension with night tours of a World War trench, as well as a history lesson for primary schools. Organiser TJ Ramsay says the school tours, which are running this week, have been a huge hit. “It’s very real and very scary for them, but they come out pumped and the teachers tell me they want to learn more when they get back to school, so that’s what it’s all about.” The new night-time Trench Tours at Founders Heritage Park are R16 and will be held this Saturday and Sunday. They are the third part of the living history event with the Anzac Experience to start on Anzac Day. This year it will feature a reconstruction of the Tapawera Training Camp, complete with drill and kit inspections. Booking for the night tours are essential and are $10 per person. School being ‘strangled by stealth’

Salisbury School in Richmond is under threat from a “sneaky and underhand” strategy by the Minister of Education Hekia Parata, aimed at “strangling the school by stealth”, according to Nelsonbased Labour MP Maryan Street. School being ‘strangled by stealth’ FROM PAGE 1 it with a community-based wrap-around education service that involved sending some of the girls to a boys residential college in Halswell in Christchurch. But the school fought the decision and it stayed open when the High Court ruled last year that placing girls in a boys residential college was unlawful and did not take into account the girls’ safety. Salisbury is the country’s only residential special education centre for girls and has been operating for almost 100 years. Now, Maryan says, the Minister of Education is trying to strangle Salisbury “by stealth” instead of killing it outright. “I was left to conclude that because the Minister, through her own incompetence, did not get her way last time and was prevented from closing the school, she is making it happen another way - by getting the wrap-around service organisation tasked with assessing applicants to turn people down.

“So she is strangling it by stealth instead of killing it outright. Salisbury is not out of the woods yet.” Hekia Parata declined to comment, but the Ministry of Education’s Katrina Casey says “there is no plan to close Salisbury School” despite the “fluctuating” roll. “The school is part of the network of schooling available and there has been no discussion about the point at which the school will be considered untenable.” Katrina says the school’s roll is “fluctuating” because parents of children with special education needs are taking advantage of the intensive wrap-around services that are increasingly available in their home communities. She says an average of only one in three students seek a residential placement and that means that “at any given time the pool of girls who may attend Salisbury is relatively small”. There are presently 221 students enrolled in the wrap-around service throughout the country, including 38 girls.

But Nick says it’s after that patrol that things can go bad and cameras and lights would help keep the area safe and are desperately needed. “If anything like this happens again the insurance company will probably walk away from me and that would be years of work in building it up and a whole heap of money wasted.”

More security is needed near the back beach at Tahunanui say local business owners after a “bad run” of vandalism. Last month Pro Karts was the victim of a $250,000 arson attack and last weekend they were hit again, with graffiti spray painted on a shipping container they rent. It’s the latest in a long line of vandalism in the area and Pro Karts owner Nick Fowler says he’s “had enough” and says Nelson City Council needs to step up and help keep the area safe. “This is council-owned land but we own the buildings so we pour a lot of money into our businesses with the risk of not owning the land and in return you’d think as a landlord they’d protect us a little bit. If this was our own land we could do a little more to protect ourselves.” Other businesses in the area agree with him and they’re writing a joint letter to the council asking for it to step up security, including lights and security cameras. Nick says he will also be upgrading his security to also include a better alarm system, lights and cameras as the vandalism is as bad

Nelson after millionth ‘giga-point’ BoxiNg chAmp: Two time heavy weight boxing champion Hasim Rahman will be in Nelson this week to visit young boxers. The giant American shocked the boxing world when he defeated Lennox Lewis for the heavyweight championship in 2001 and reclaimed the WBC heavy weight title in 2005. He’s in New Zealand for the “Super 8” boxing tournament but was able to take a day out to come to Nelson.

Nelson has now got over 900,000 points in the national competition to become the first New Zealand town with superfast broadband, and is holding firm in third place. Clare Atkins, spokesperson for the Nelson Gigatown group, says it’s an exciting time for the city. “Considering we started in 27th place with zero points, this is a fantastic result for Nelson, but with other

The 84 year old and her daughter Jennifer will be collecting outside Countdown on Vanguard St this Thursday and they are encouraging people to bring some change to work with them. “Over the years that’s one thing that’s changed, not many people have cash on them anymore. But some do say ‘I’ll get some out when I pay for my groceries’ and they do. They’re quite good like that,” says Elaine. Poppy Day is held a week before Anzac Day and money raised goes to help with medical bills for returned servicemen and women. Elaine says she started collecting because her father fought in World War I and her husband in World War 2. “We were always taught to respect the soldiers so I was always happy to do my bit.”

Emergency parade a hit

Nelson’s inaugural emergency services parade proved a hit with the public as well as the men and women who keep the region safe. Over 100 emergency services personnel accompanied by 22 vehicles paraded down Trafalgar St on Saturday morning for “First Responders 2014” to applause from members of the public. The parade was followed by speeches at the church steps by MP Nick Smith, mayor Rachel Reece and emergency services leaders. There were also demonstrations, including firefighters cutting up a car, St John Ambulance paramedics performing a patient extraction and police firing a taser in a dramatic crime simulation. Police area commander Inspector Steve

Greally says First Responders 2014 was “a complete success”. “The buy-in from the public was outstanding,” he says. Steve says his personal highlight was when the parade reached the top of Trafalgar St. “As we approached the Church Steps the density of people was a surprise to me. You could really sense their appreciation. It made you proud to be a policeman,” he says. Organiser Matt Lawrey says he could not believe his luck with the weather, and he says that he was hugely grateful to everyone who had made the event a success. Matt says he would now be talking to the services involved about the possibility of holding a follow-up event in 2016.

Traditional waka takes locals for a spin

Dozens of people jumped at the chance to go out on the water in a traditional double-hulled waka over the weekend, when it was here for Heritage Week. Haunui, which has a crew of 16, is 22 metres long, 5.5 metres wide and was built just five years ago in Auckland as one of seven that are based around the Pacific. It was set to travel to Christchurch this week, but for three days Nelson residents could book an hour trip on it. Richmond Mall ups security after burglary

Richmond Mall is increasing its security after burglars climbed on to the roof of the mall and cut through the ceiling, before stealing from two retailers last Tuesday night. Richmond Mall manager Belinda de Clercq says the offenders only got away with the money that was in the tills of Cuts@Once and The Body Shop, which totalled $800. “It looks like they’ve gone through the air-con vent. Who would think someone would go on to the roof and cut through it?” says Belinda. Police and mall management were unaware of what the offenders knew about the two retailers, but Belinda says that both Cuts@Once and The Body Shop did not have alarms. “The two stores that they targeted are some of the few that don’t have alarms or sensors and the fact they knew that they’re leaving the money over in the tills was like they’ve been under observation.” A spokesperson from Cuts@Once says it was “really disruptive” to business. “That’s a lot of haircuts to recoup

and when people just take from you it’s a lot of work,” she says. “You don’t expect them to come through the roof. Who knows the minds of these people and what they do?” The damage to the Richmond Mall is likely to cost $2000, says Belinda. Because it was raining, some water leaked through the hole in the roof. Belinda has already been in discussions with Nelson Alarms about how they can prevent access on to the roof in future. “We will be blocking off that area in some way or form so people can’t access it. Apart from this there are some children who come on to the roof and put cones on it and it’s quite dangerous. We’ve got fans, air con units and skylights and if people walk on the wrong area they can fall right through to the mall. It’s not a play place.” Police say a break-in through the roof was not a common occurrence at all. They have conducted scene examinations and are reviewing CCTV footage.

Is Nicola Nelson’s luckiest person?

Nicola Pugh could be Nelson’s luckiest person. She has been regularly winning major competitions and prizes since she was 16 and in the last six months she’s won two separate trips to the United States, the latest to the Ellen show in Los Angeles next month. Her secret? Putting in an effort when most people “can’t be bothered”. “I enter the competitions that require a little bit of effort and work because I don't think many others enter them. But I only enter the ones that I really want to win,” she says. Nicola says her first major win was when she was 16 and she got to appear in the music video of her “favourite band at the time”, although she refused to say who it was “because it’s too embarrassing”. She’s also won plenty of concert tickets, even backstage, and travelled with

Opshop when they played ten gigs in ten different towns and cities in the one day to celebrate ten years of New Zealand music month. Last year she won a trip to Las Vegas for the I Heart Radio concert, featuring the top 40 musicians of last year and others like Elton John and Queen. To win the latest trip to LA and the Ellen Show, hosted by Ellen DeGeneres, she made a video of herself jumping off the Auckland Sky Tower to show her love of the Ellen show. That beat the efforts of one North Island man who had the Ellen logo tattooed on his body. Nicola says her work has been great letting her take time off at short notice and admits she has been lucky. “I've got to do some pretty amazing experiences that not many other people would have done, so I've been very lucky and I'm very grateful.”

Car club celebrates 50 years The Nelson Vintage Car Club’s 50th anniversary celebrations were tied in with Heritage Week, which seems fitting for the Topliss family whose own family heritage traces back to the club’s beginning. The late George Topliss was one of the Nelson Vintage Club’s founding members, and his two sons David and Richard are current members, along with grandson James. The trio were in attendance for the 50th anniversary, which culminated in a “gymkhana” and public open day at Richmond Park on Sunday, after a rally through the Moutere to Motueka on Saturday. George’s 1926 Morris Bull Nose was used in the club’s very first rally in 1964, and it was there again 50 years later, driven by grandson James. “This was his car and it’s been in the family ever since,” says Richard. “James had the opportunity to drive it in the 50th rally. It was a great opportunity to bring it out.” George was an engineer by trade, and his interest in vintage cars finally led to ownership in the 60s when he bought the Morris Bull Nose in Blenheim, following the Picton Car Rally. “His father was an engineer too and mechanical things such as cars were always in his life. He brought this over to Nelson and restored it. He had a number of cars but this was his first one. He enjoyed old cars and the engineering of them.” Other vintage cars which George was

David and Richard remember going for rides in the vintage cars with their parents, sitting in the dickie seat of the Morris. However, the membership of the club was much smaller back then. “People used to ring up their friends and we’d go out for a picnic very regularly,” he says. “That was in the 1960s and 70s. You basically had to be a restorer to get a car going. These days you can buy a restored car and that’s the big change.” Just like their father before them, David and Richard agree that the early exposure to motoring is what created the interest in vintage cars. “I suppose

we were just brought up with them as kids. They’re quite different to drive compared to a modern car. With a modern car you just turn the key and you can drive, with these you’re continually changing the spark timing, the fuel mixture, so it’s certainly not automatic,” says Richard, before David chimed in with his answer. “It’s such an interesting era. They were all so different in the 20s and 30s in particular. They were so innovative in coming up with new ideas and it’s great to keep an old vehicle running.” Richard says the membership of the club would be close to 250, which was a tribute to the work George and the original committee had done in the early days. “And there are people who were still there from those earlier days, it’s just amazing.”

Air New Zealand: Would probably be in the best interest of Air NZ to offer a simple flight discount for “medical” related flights, such as those specified requiring travel by DHB. This is simple enough to do, so the real question is why would a subsidised airline (supported in part by tax money) not offer discounts for DHB related flights? Moreover, the ideology that keeps being presented that “free market” will address the need/issue is pathetic, as anyone who has taken Macroeconomics knows full well there is no such thing as free market. Air NZ, shame on you for not even trying to address the obvious need for medical related travel dictated by DHBs. I’m not suggesting everyone can just get 20 per cent discount on flights because they are visiting a hospital, but when DHBs define the requirement. I read your article with interest. Our experience with Air NZ, my husband and I booked Nelson to San Francisco return. I made a mistake and booked the first part Auckland to Nelson instead of Nelson to Auckland. As we were flooded out of our home, we did not print electronic tickets until a week before we were due to leav. We then picked up the error. They charged us $680 as we had

to rebook a whole new flight one way to Auckland, we were given a refund of $10 each for our bags. This was last year and was a bitter experience considering we were flying all the way to San Francisco with them. We had insurance but this did not cover my mistake. N Robertson.

Off to Gallipoli When Derek Milton was just a boy he didn’t know what the dawn service was. He just knew it was very dark outside and that it was something special for his grandfather Jack Sloan to attend. “There were all of these ex soldiers marching along in virtual quietness and it was quite eerie. I remember going down and watching it and seeing my grandfather do that,” he says. “Growing up, I always had a really strong bond with my grandfather and I remember going to a couple of the dawn services as a young child with him.” Having been announced as a successful applicant in the ballot to attend the 100th anniversary of the ANZAC landings in Gallipoli next year, Derek and his wife Donnella will be remembering Jack at the battlegrounds he fought on a century ago. “I’m really privileged to go. It’s a heck of an honour to be there. We’ve been attending the Mapua Anzac Day Service for quite a few years.

If we hadn’t got in it wouldn’t have been the be all and end all, but we always planned to go there one day and see where he landed and where he fought. It’s a heck of a place apparently.” A total of 9851 applicants entered the ballot to attend the 100th anniversary of the ANZAC landings in Gallipoli next year. The 950 double passes have been allocated and 100 special passes have been held back to be issued to special representatives at a later date. All of the successful applicants must pay their own way and their accommodation. However, entry to the services is free. Derek plans to go to Gallipoli in memory of his late grandfather, who died in 1982. Jack, originally from Invercargill, was a sapper, a soldier who performed a variety of military engineering duties. “He talked about it and had lots of stories. He was wounded in a place called Flers in France. He sustained a machine gun bullet

which ripped out part of his left lung, but he stayed on right until the end.” Derek says Jack admitted he was “absolutely terrified” of the war. “It was a shocking experience. He was certainly anti-war because of what he’d seen over there.” His favourite story was when his grandfather was sent out to collect bodies during a cease fire. “He shared a Turkish coffee and a cigarette with one of the Turkish soldiers. Then it was back to the lines shooting one another. It just seems so bizarre; they’re out there killing each other and then shared a cigarette and a coffee. He was a very outgoing guy, was really friendly and just loved people.” Derek and Donnella will take Jack’s Gallipoli medal, which is dated 1915, to the 100th anniversary. “It’s definitely going with us as a memory of him. We’re just so privileged and honoured to go.”

Police report with Area Commander

Last week we were really disappointed to catch 16 drink drivers in our weekend operation and the district commander was quoted in the media saying we would be keeping a close eye on this. This past weekend we had the Traffic Alcohol Group working from 3am on both Saturday and Sunday mornings and on both days they came across drivers who I consider a real risk to public safety. The first, a 53 year old Richmond man with 15 previous convictions for drink driving, blew 782 mic, almost double the legal alcohol limit. He was out and about at 3.30 am. At exactly the same time on Sunday morning they came across a young man who, at just 22 years of age, already had four previous convictions for drink driving. When people keep making the same stupid decisions as these two clearly have it really worries me that it’s only a matter of time before they kill or maim some innocent person. As it was, the younger of these two drivers continued to demonstrate his poor decision-making abilities by fleeing from the officer at high speed and crashing seconds later. Thankfully he was unharmed in the crash, however he has done significant damage to other people’s property. My staff have the unfortunate job of dealing with the repercussions of other people’s poor decisions on virtually a daily basis and it can be a very unpleasant job. Families’ and friends’ worlds crumble before their eyes and even innocent bystanders with no connection to the parties involved suffer from the trauma of what they have seen. None of this has to happen and the solution is simple - if you’re going to drink make a plan for getting home that doesn’t involve driving. If you know someone who is regularly taking risks by drinking and driving, give us a call and hopefully we can stop them before too much damage is done.

A Stoke teen is encouraging the public to get behind her in an online competition, as she hopes to take the next step in her music career. Jessie Leov, 19, who is in her second year studying pop music at the University of Auckland, has entered a contest on the audience.co.nz, where a monthly winner will win $10,000 funding from NZ on Air, as long as they haven’t had previous NZ on Air funding. Nelson band Little Oceans and singer Johnnie Cameron won the competition last year, and Jessie hopes she can be the next one to add her name to the list. “I guess over the last year I’ve just been trying to get myself out there. I’ve had a few gigs in Auckland but this is kind of step one in getting some exposure,” the former Nayland College student says. “Most months the winner gets NZ on Air funding of $10,000, which would help a lot.” Because the competition is dictated by the number of votes, Jessie is hoping the support of her hometown can help her cause. “The hard thing is getting people to vote every day.” Jessie’s first musical experience came as an eight year old involved in a school production, and it was just four years later that she decided music was the path she wanted to follow for a career. “When I was about

While netballers had ordered a fine weekend for the annual Geraldine Hodgson Tournament, most pundits would have been hard pushed to think the sun would be shining, considering the weather forecast. However, in true “GH Tournament” weather conditions, a successful tournament came to pass. Thirty teams competed in five grades over the two days. As there were only four entries in the A Grade, the teams played only on Sunday. A round robin was played with four quarters of ten minutes. Central Men from Blenheim won the grade, as they swept all before them with their physical presence and sheer speed through court. While Jacks OPD had the experience of the Mainland Super Club competition some weeks ago, Sunday’s games were another opportunity to fine-tune their roster. Coach Robyn Leonard was happy with the progress of her players. She saw them adjust to the different dynamics within their team, and “dig themselves out of situations”. While mid-courter Tineil Stevenson played her good steady game, and defender Anna Miles gave 100 per cent throughout, it was debutant Lucy Ingam who came in for special praise. Lucy moved really nicely,

While game time has been limited, the team had been concentrating on fitness training to date. The team’s performances showed promise for the forthcoming

season, given the fact that there are a number of new recruits. Prices Black coach Jane Andrew, says there were a number of “good things” that came out of the day’s play. It was pretty daunting for some as they made their Premier debuts. Bex Watene, more accustomed to a shooting role, made an excellent transition to the GD bib and looked to be establishing a formidable partnership with Paige Pointon. Sixteen year old, Ariana Te Kawa – Wiremu handled her step up to the elite grade with aplomb. Nelson College for Girls had the perfect record when they went through round robin play undefeated. The college team defeated Stoke in the semi final 19-13 on the back of some superb shooting by Abbey Franklin. Abbey displayed increased strength, maturity and accuracy to dominate the offensive third, while Ellie Bell was a dynamic feeder who drove to consistently hit the circle edge to provide quality ball for her shooters. Kea McGuinnetty at wing defence, caused havoc on the outside of the circle. Youngsters Charlotte Timms and Helen Dale put in creditable performances as they put up their hands as a “pick me” to coach Kathryn Orange. After a mediocre first half, the score was locked at 4 all when Nelson met Garin College in the final. A number of positional changes paid off and Nelson came away with the B Grade as they pulled out to a 14-7 win.

Juniors serve up top tennis Fishing

Despite the grim looking weather on Friday morning, the 2014 Nelson Junior Open went on without a hitch, and plenty of local players picked up victories. Around 130 players from the ages 8 to 18 competed in 17 different events, which saw the Tasman Tennis Club in Richmond overflowing with players and parents enjoying both the atmosphere and the fantastic tennis. Entries from Wellington, Marlborough, Christchurch and the West Coast spiced up the tournament, giving our local players a run for their money. Luke Brown of the Tasman Tennis Club won the boys 10s doubles with Jordan Edwards of Christchurch, but then lost to his partner in the singles final. Emma Langford and Rani McGuire took out the girls 10s doubles, beating Stoke pair Grace Meehan and Hannah Young. The singles was then

Rugby in the blood for the Havili family Around the house David Havili would call him dad, but he admits it’s a bit strange calling him that on the rugby field too. Last year was the first time David and his father Bill played for Nelson in the same match. They even went on to win the Tasman Trophy as team-mates. And it appears the family connection will continue this year but with one more addition. Bill, David, and younger sibling William, all played for Galbraith Nelson in Saturday’s win over Stoke – the first win of the season. Bill, who at 47 years old is a former Nelson Bays winger, came on as a flanker, 19 year old David, a current New Zealand Under-20 trialist, played at second-five, and 15 year old Nelson College student William was also a late substitute, having sat on the bench the week before in the loss to Wanderers. Playing together in the same team was a proud and special moment for the Havili family, but David is still confused as to what he should call Bill on the field. “It was a bit weird, I’d normally call him dad but then I started calling him by his name on the field as if he was
