Mr Sowman says he will make a submission to the consultation process, asking the Ministry of Education to commit to redeveloping the colleges on a greenfield site. Whether construction encompasses two adjoining single-sex colleges the preferred option for both college principals and their respective boards of trustees - or one co-educational facility is not something he has an opinion about. But the third option, fixing the old and leaky buildings at the existing colleges, was no longer viable. So far council has identified three sites, all in the Burleigh area, suitable for a new build, including the Corlett Trust block and Colonial Vineyard sites on Aerodrome Road and the CliffordMarris site on Battys Road. Other potential sites mooted, including Waterlea Racecourse, Pollard Park and A&P Park, have been ruled out for

various reasons. Marlborough Boys’ College principal Wayne Hegarty says any new build needed to be on at least 17 hectares, the land size you’d get if you combined both current sites. With 2000 students to cater for, there were already concerns about the space needed for things like playing fields. “We’re already too small on our site at the moment to run courses like forestry and horticulture,” he said. So far, 320 public submissions have been made and the closing date is next Thursday, July 31. Facilitator Janet Kelly encouraged as many people as possible to have their say, even if they only submitted one or two sentences. Slot car home damaged by vandals By Adam Poulopoulos The Marlborough Slot Car Club is recovering from their own home invasion after they became the latest targets of vandals last week. The club’s room, at A&P Park, was vandalised overnight on Sunday. The culprits broke the door lock and tagged the floor, benches, track, and inside power points. The walls, both inside and outside the building were also tagged, although nothing was stolen. Club member Nigel Boyce left the room at 7:15pm on Sunday, and returned at about 8am the next day to find it trashed. He was disappointed. “It’s a home invasion. That what

it comes down to.” Mr Boyce said it was the worst damage the club had suffered in the 15 years they used the room. But it could have been a lot worse. “The things that could have happened would have been catastrophic. “If they’d permanently damaged the track that would have been major.” The damage came after Mr Boyce’s son Hadley, 11, and Andrew Bidwell, 13, won national titles at a meet in Wellington last month. “For a small club we’re at the sharp end at national level, and to have this happen is a bit devastating really.” Nigel Boyce with the club’s track.

Lessons learnt as farmer returns from world summit By Kristy Martin Travelling to the Netherlands to trade ideas with farmers from all over the world was a once in a lifetime opportunity and huge learning experience for Richard Laugesen. The Marlborough sheep farmer and vineyard operator was one of just six New Zealanders invited to attend the Rabobank Young Farmers Master Class last month. “It’s good to travel to remind yourself how big the world is,” Mr Laugesen said. “You get so focused on what you’re doing here that it’s easy to get the blinkers on. “You’ve got to get out and see what else is going on. “It reminds you how far away we are in New Zealand.” Mr Laugesen, seen as a leader in his field for making innovative changes to his Waihopai Valley property Craiglochart, was among 40 young farmers from various countries selected to attend the master class. The group attended lectures by influential speakers, visited renowned agricultural companies and swapped industry techniques. They engaged in dialogue about the future of global agriculture. Mr Laugesen, 34, got to spend time in a Dutch dairy farm, near the German border, where he helped milk a small herd of indoor cows. This was quite a change from New

Zealand’s spacious, pasture-based industry. Seeing the advances in Dutch technology and the strong emphasis on sustainability, particularly the incorporation of wind and solar energy, Mr Laugesen realised New Zealand has a long way to go. “I was absolutely impressed and blown away by what I saw, and just the efficiency of Dutch business.

“It made me think New Zealand is lagging behind. “There are a lot of great producers here but also a big pool of operators getting left behind.” The young farmers were told that with the global population expected to grow from seven to nine billion by 2040, world food production would need to triple just to feed everyone. They were encouraged to start thinking about the strategies needed to combat this issue. “In New Zealand we are very lucky because we have the ability to protect our borders,” Mr Laugesen said. “We have to think about who we are targeting our food to, enhance our sustainability and food security. “We need to learn how to make our isolation our strength. “Small changes can make such a difference.” Mr Laugesen lives with wife Anna and sons William, 3, and Archie, 2. He bought out Craiglochart from his parents Brian and Jenny Laugesen, and set about future proofing the dryland property by establishing a vineyard, building a dam, and irrigating 100ha of flat land.

BAIT DROP The Department of Conservation has carried out an operation to eradicate mice on Te Hoiere/Maud Island wildlife sanctuary in the Marlborough Sounds. Mice were discovered last spring in pockets on the Pelorus Sound island, a scientific reserve which is managed as a predator-free sanctuary for endangered native species. The operation, on Wednesday, involved aerial application of cereal baits containing the anti-coagulant toxin brodifacoum, a commonly-used rat poison.

CAR BREAK-INS Cigarettes were stolen from the glove box of an unlocked vehicle parked on Stephenson Street on the night of July 22. That same night, two vehicles parked at a Hospital Road address were also entered and searched. Twenty dollars in coin was taken from one of the vehicles. The owners said they thought they had locked the vehicles.

New Raupo owners eager to begin By Adam Poulopoulos There is just a week to go until Raupo’s new owners officially take over, and they cannot wait to get started. Taryn Gilbert and Stephane Ughetto (pictured) were announced as the cafe’s new owners on July 1, with their first day next Friday. They are taking over from Helen and Marcel Rood, who started the business in 2008. Helen and Marcel will continue to work in the cafe for the foreseeable future. For Taryn and Stephane, the move into restaurant ownership is not a sudden move. They met in the UK while working together in a four-star hotel, and Stephane said the chance to own Raupo was like a dream come true.

Parking in Blenheim Council is currently reviewing its car parking policy. It is seeking feedback from local businesses, through the Marlborough Chamber of Commerce. Parking charges in Blenheim have not changed since 2006. Council staff have been asked to research the options for future parking, including charges, and bring a report to a future meeting of

Council’s Community and Financial Planning Committee. Currently, the cost of building the Alfred Street car park, the purchase of the old Working Men’s Club site in Wynen Street and 2 High Street appear as costs in the Council’s parking account. Part of the upcoming report will be a review of an earlier Council decision that parking revenue be used to help pay

for these sites. Council aims to have a new parking strategy in place by 1 December 2014. Remember, if you park in one of the Council car parks using a Pay and Display ticket and you don’t use all the time you have paid for, you may use that same ticket to park in any other Council pay-and-display parking space for the balance of that time. There’s no need to buy another ticket.

Struggling with the homework? Marlborough’s District Library staff are on the panel of librarians from all over the country who provide a free online homework resource for school children through AnyQuestions.co.nz. It’s a service coordinated by the National Library for both primary and secondary age students where they can make contact with a skilled librarian who can

help them find good quality information that’s relevant to their level of study. It means students can log on, any time between 1.00 pm and 6.00 pm from Monday to Friday, and communicate with a real librarian about their homework. Marlborough District Libraries have their own homework resources too – like the Discovering

Collection database. This database is suitable for children Year 6 to Year 10 with material on science, social studies, history, biography and literature. Recycling do’s and don’t’s

Aerosols, meat trays and tetrapaks have been appearing in the kerbside bins lately. None of these products are recycled here in Marlborough. NO hazardous material containers eg; pesticides, oil or toxic chemicals. We DO take: • Glass bottles and jars Nothing broken and – please – wash them out. • Plastic containers Any plastic material with recycling symbols 1 to 7. Again, washed out, and it helps us if you can remove caps and lids and put them into the crate separately. • Metal cans and tins Steel and aluminium cans (rinsed), metal lids from jars and clean aluminium foil. • Newspaper

Newspapers are easiest to deal with in bundles - in a supermarket bag or tied in a bundle. • Other paper and glossies Bundle glossy paper separately from newspapers; junk mail, telephone directories, office paper, magazines and brown paper can all go in the bin. • Cardboard Cardboard boxes and egg trays are accepted but please pack cardboard so it doesn’t blow away.

Skinned knee, skinned hand, I was very sore, my trouser leg was ruined with a gaping hole in the knee. Did I go to the council for replacement trousers? I should have, just like the lady who fell and broke HER glasses! NO, I accept that it was my fault, I tripped and fell because I wasnt paying attention where I was walking! M.D.C. should not have paid towards your glasses, you should not have accepted the money.

WE Know the hazards Hunting is a recreational choice and we all no the hazards and risks before participating in such ventures but terminal illnesses are not so think before donating and maybe spare a thought for the owner of the helicopter whose livlihood has been destroyed.

Pet owners Wow was so shocked to read responsible pet owners text specially bout the neighbours getting their birds killed? Wot do they mean pet birds being killed? Well they should be in a cage but wild birds its the food chain normal life. If these folk who run pets down actually had a pet to love they would see things in a different light.

This is the time when families and individuals must ensure they are safe and secure, and for authorities to gather all the information they can about what areas are worse affected and where to allocate their resources. The Sun talks to Marlborough emergency services officer Gary Spence about the first 24 hours of a disaster hitting Marlborough.“ In the first 24 hours Marlborough Emergency Management is information poor, so over the first few hours we are receiving communication from volunteers and support agencies. “We are also collating information from our support agencies including police, ambulance, fire, Marlborough Lines, Marlborough Roads, companies such as Crafar Crouch, Simcox - they all have representatives who communicate with us,” he says.

For those living near the coast and a strong earthquake hits, Gary advises they go inland or reach higher ground in case of a tsunami threat. For everyone else, whether they are at home, work or even shopping at the supermarket, drop, cover and hold until the earthquake has finished. “When the shaking has ended carefully go outside while taking care to watch for falling debris or items. “Most importantly, if your

house is safe to be in that is the best place to be. You should have emergency kits on hand that can help your family survive for four days. “In all disasters, check on your family, colleagues, neighbours and friends and together work out what resources you have between you. “This is where we encourage people to be part of neighbourhood support groups so they can look after each other, because as a street you can look after one another which takes a lot of pressure off emergency services,” Gary says. Response Centres will pop up at a number of sites throughout Marlborough which are coordinated by volunteers. These are a good place for people to visit when wanting to find out information or have their concerns addressed, but if people can return home Gary advises they do so.

Talk to your children about disasters to help reduce fear and anxiety. Get to know your neighbour, say hello over the fence and introduce yourself, because being part of a neighbourhood support group will help you cope better in an emergency situation.

Anything can happen at anytime An earthquake could strike in the early hours of the morning when we are tucked up safe in bed, or as past events have shown us - they can occur during the day when we are away from home working. There will always be a moment of panic within the first few minutes of it occurring, particularly when we are worrying about our loved ones who are still at home. The best thing anyone can do is to form or join a neighbourhood support group. Being part of a neighbourhood support group enables you to identify who is most vulnerable

in your street, as well as what resources are available in the event of an emergency. For example: You might have a doctor, nurse, builder, electrician or someone with current first aid skills who can assist people who are elderly, are not very mobile or who have been injured, from their homes. It’s also important to talk to one another and find out who needs help putting an emergency kit together, who has a vegetable garden if food is needed, who has a barbecue to cook on or even a generator if the power is out. A neighbourhood that can

pull together its resources and communicate with emergency services is a neighbourhood that will cope better in an emergency situation. It’s never too late to form a neighbourhood support group. It’s also a great way to get to know the people in your street, and a way to prevent crime from occuring. Stir in both • 1/3 cup sour cream cheeses and the chives. Add potatoes (optional extra for serving) and mix well. • 1 heap cup shredded cheddar cheese Spoon them into the pan filling the cups to slightly below the top. • 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan Bake 25 - 35 minutes until they pull away • 2 tablespoons chopped chives or from the sides of the cup and are golden brown. Remove from oven and let them parsley cool 5 minutes in pan. • Salt and black pepper, to taste Serve with sour cream if desired Ingredients:

That was how Kiwi cyclist Jack Bauer felt earlier this week, as he led for 222km of stage 15 of the Tour de France, only to be overtaken with 50 metres to go. Bauer would have been the first New Zealander to win a stage in the prestigious race’s history. Reportedly dad Hans joined Jack in shedding tears after the result, but that should not take away from what was a remarkable ride. With the Commonwealth Games under way in Glasgow it is worth remembering New Zealand has

had its fair share of close, but no cigar moments. One of the more heartbreaking incidents was when race walker Craig Barrett collapsed from heat exhaustion while leading at the 1998 Kuala Lumpur games. He was one km from the finish. Outside of New Zealand, Manchester United had the 2011-12 Premier League title wrapped up, but arch-rivals Manchester City famously scored two stoppagetime goals on the final day to snatch it away. Hopefully this time our athletes can see it through and make it onto that dais.

Grandstand’s future unclear

WOODBOURNE MARATHON

Negotiations concerning the future of the A&P Park grandstand are continuing. The grandstand requires earthquake strengthening work to bring it up to code, upgrades expected to cost over $500,000. The Marlborough District Council has held meetings with the Historic Places Trust over the stand, and is set to send them engineering documents in the near future. Council spokesperson Robert Hutchinson said they believe the money could be used in another way. “It would be more beneficial to put the money needed to strengthen into a new sports field complex, similar to those at Endeavour Park
