This year the walk will start from a registration point at the Endeavour Park car park next to Queen Charlotte College, through the Endeavour Park subdivision, to join an existing track to the spectacular summit of Gondola hill – a 437m climb. Eric says he has given up on the possibility of building a gondola or cable car up the hill to a lookout and restaurant building. The gondola could have linked with mountain bike trails. However, he says that despite a feasibility study backing the proposal, it was going to cost too much to get off the ground. “I’m 74 – do I really want to put in this much effort?” He is still giving people the chance to enjoy the views from the top by offering it to the Picton Rotary Club for their annual fundraising walk, to be held this year on March 20. Kurt says the walk to the summit and back takes approximately two hours for the average walker and is of an easier gradient than the Mt

The contest, linking with the Marlborough Wine and Food Festival, sees retailers decorate their shop windows in appropriate themes, each linked with a different winery. Wine Marlborough spokeswoman Harriet Wadsworth says the window display competition was an opportunity for local businesses to get involved in the Marlborough Wine and Food Festival and create a fun, festive atmosphere in and around town in the buildup to the event. The displays were judged on: Creativity, Originality, Eye Catching, Effort, Clearly relates to festival – it also had to include an A3 or A4 Festival poster and the name of the
winery they were paired up with. First prize was awarded to Prices Pharmacy and Cache gift shop in Queen Street, which was teamed with Nautilus Estate. Clarinda Neal did the winning display and receives six tickets to the Wine and Food Festival along with 12 mixed bottles of wine. Second was Mitchell Sports in Scott Street which was teamed with Villa Maria. Third was No. 4 Boutique in Market Place, which was teamed with Highfield TerraVin. UK petfood means jobs here By Cathie Bell A British pet food firm is setting up in Marlborough, and ultimately could create up to 10 high-value jobs, Marlborough Research Centre chief executive Gerald Hope says. Lintbells is an award winning pet health company based in the United Kingdom. Dedicated to providing high quality products which are proven to improve the health of cats, dogs and horses, they pride themselves on providing scientifically proven health solutions which ensure customer satisfaction. For the past six years it’s been using Marlborough greenshell mussels for its pet health products. Pet lovers in the UK market form the majority of the company’s current customer base, but Lintbells has seen rapid expansion in the South East Asian markets over the past
couple of years. Founders John Davies and Dr John Howie have visited New Zealand many times over the past year and have joined the Marlborough Research Centre’s Food and Beverage Innovation Cluster. They are also setting up a subsidiary company here to do research which could lead to new mussel-based products. John Davies says the engagement with the Marlborough Research Centre and assistance they have provided has been invaluable, connecting Lintbells with the industry and research providers. “We see in Marlborough and the top of the south many opportunities to grow our business. We intend to invest significantly in the region. “The Food and Beverage Innovation Cluster has been invaluable in facilitating our engagement.

Dairy site sells The former dairy factory land in Alabama Road has sold, Bayleys commercial real estate agent Grant Baxter confirms. Grant says the site will be developed, but the new owners are still working on plans, he says. There were a few options, he says, but at this stage these were commercially sensitive. There had been a bit of interest in the site over the past 18 months it was marketed, he says. The sale was confirmed last Thursday.

a winner in this year’s Healthy Bastards Bush Pilot Champs which was held on Saturday at
the Omaka Airfield. Russell won the Precision Landing category in his Piper Cherokee ZK-SNE with a top effort of 0.6 of a metre from the mark, a result he says he was really happy with. “I’m chuffed with it, especially as I haven’t placed near the top in previous years,” he says. Russell has been flying privately for 45 years. His inspiration to train for his private pilot license came when he was working at Aero Space in Hamilton. “One of the office girls had her license so I rolled up my sleeves and started training.”
He trained under Ken Fenwick who he describes as being a ‘legendary instructor’ and went on to fly privately. Today, Russell flys between Te Kuiti and Blenheim for his accounting business in his Piper Cherokee which he has owned for almost 10 years. “It was built in 1962 and came to New Zealand in 1980. It’s previous owner was an airline pilot who spared no expense on it and kept it well maintained. “It has low flying hours of just 3000 from manufacture which is low for a plane of that age. It’s a great plane and it was a real buzz to have it out competing at the weekend,” he says.

Story and photos by Celeste Alexander The sun was shining on all those who attended the Healthy Bastards Bush Pilot Champs on Saturday, but for the pilots competing in the TOL Takeoff and Landing categories, a cross wind created some challenges.
However all pilots put on a great show for the large crowd that had gathered, including families and aircraft enthusiasts. One event that drew a lot of attention was the race between high performance bike and a Cessna 185. It was close between the two in the
beginning with the bike taking the initial lead, but the Cessna’s tight turning ability enabled it to reach the finish line first. Following on from the competition was an awards dinner held at a private hangar at the airfield where each of the winners were announced.

David’s orchestra challenge Sewing by day, conducting by night Story and photo by Laura Shipley David Brooks is excited for his new challenge of conducting the Marlborough Civic Orchestra. David has been conducting Brass for 15 years but this is the first time he has conducted for Orchestra. “I like all types of music as long as it’s good music,” he says. “I really like Sole Mio at the moment.” The orchestra has some concerts coming up this year, he says, including one in early April when they will be performing at the gala opening of the new theatre building. It is open for anyone to join, young and old, learners and expert. “Our youngest member is 10 and our oldest is 85,” David says. “The more the merrier”. David encourages anyone who is interested in music to give it a try. “Go with your passion and follow your
dreams,” he says. “There are a lot of great music tutors in Blenheim.” Orchestra spokeswoman Linda Lloyd said the group was keen to promote the orchestra to new members. “We don’t hold auditions and welcome all orchestral musicians of any age and ability. We are especially looking for those members of the public who may have played an instrument in the past, been in a youth orchestra at school, or a community orchestra, and would like to get back into playing again.” She said the orchestra plans to do a few public concerts this year, playing a variety of music from beautiful classical works through to popular songs and thrilling movie music. “We think it’s amazing timing to be part of the explosion in the arts which will no doubt happen with the new theatre opening soon and we really look forward to being part of it.”

Bypass and bridge Dear Ed, I noticed government has allocated about $15 million to upgrade the Opawa bridge. The bridge bottle-neck (and roundabouts too) is created largely by trucks passing south, having to go through Blenheim. A bypass would immediately alleviate any congestion but this inescapable logic seems beyond council and government. Council should be saying to government, “let’s do the by-pass first and see the effect.” I would expect MP Stuart Smith to be supporting a much needed bypass. Besides the current Grove Road bridge does have the effect of slowing down speed hoons coming into Blenheim. Don Coyote

The kids are all right Blenheim woman Jo Lane has just stepped down as Nativity Church’s youth co-ordinator. She talks to Cathie Bell about Marlborough’s marvellous youth. Marlborough has a lot of amazing resources, but one of its most significant is that of its young people, Jo Lane says. She’s had close up experience of Marlborough’s young people, working as the Nativity Church youth coordinator for the past five years and as the mother of five young people of her own, with husband Chris. “I have four teenagers, and one who thinks she is one, and then there’s one who acts like one, my husband!” Youth things tend to become quite time consuming when you’ve got five kids, she says. Jo met Chris in Wellington when they attended The Rock church. They went to Britain, returning with two children. Chris had a job in Blenheim, and they were only supposed to stay for a few years before returning to Wellington, but the family settled here and put down roots. “Seventeen years later and we’re still here.” Marlborough’s ease of living means the family can do a full range of activities. “With our kids, we can watch six games of sport in a weekend. If we were in Auckland or Wellington, it would be hard to get to one with the traffic issues, so Marlborough is pretty awesome in that regard.” Her work for the church started out as a parent helping out in the crèche, then junior church, and then the youth group, before taking up the paid role as youth co-ordinator. “You see the importance of youth having an understanding of their relationship with Jesus, how much they’re loved and adored, giving them encouragement and purpose.” Marlborough’s young people are fabulous, Jo reckons. “They’re smart, gorgeous, and keen to be involved, valued, and loved. “But being a young person, in the throes of growing up, learning, and finding their place in the world isn’t always easy. “Kids here have it as tough as youth anywhere. Mental health issues are pretty scary.” Jo’s a keen advocate for support services for young people in particular, and for engagement and involvement from family, friends, and the community as a whole to
support young people as they grow up and achieve their hopes, dreams, and goals. Young people might be hard to stay in touch with at times, she says, but they crave go-to adult relationships that encourage them. “There is still value in having other family members, such as granny or uncles, down the road. “They’re really important if you don’t have the resources, to be somewhere that these kids can go to for help and support. “You need those support services there because kids will tell others things they’re afraid to tell their parents.” Young people need to be confident enough in their relationships with others so they can ask for the help they need, Jo says. And they need to keep asking for it, if they don’t get the help they want from the first person they ask. “If you’re needing support, go to a parent, family member or the school counsellor for support. “If you can’t get help there, tap into the Marlborough Youth Trust, your family doctor or Youthline. www. youthline.co.nz 0800 376633.” She says she is not sure that people are able to easily access all the resources available to them. However, she says she sees a lot more opportunities for youth in Marlborough in this past year, which has been great - especially as she has been supporting youth finding employment and opportunities. While she’s stepped back from the role at Nativity Church, Jo will still be working with Marlborough’s young people. She is on the board of the Marlborough Youth Trust, and speaks highly of the work done by trust worker Joyde Tomalin and her team. “They’ve organised CACTUS in Blenheim, Havelock, Seddon and Picton, as well as water fights, and marshmallow evenings. They’re just massive. EDUCATION Study tips for successful students Here are some tips for students who want to be successful in their studies. Study in short bursts of 30 to 90 minutes, then take a long break. Motivate yourself with fun breaks: “I will finish this problem in 30 minutes and then go to the house for coffee hour.”
Plan to study between 18 and 22 hours per week in typical weeks. Study consistently: Three hours per day, broken into 90 minute study sessions, is more productive and efficient than a 15 hour binge on the weekend.

Body in car
Post-mortem results on the body found in a burning care near Tuamarina were still pending, Marlborough police said yesterday. The body, removed from the car found burning in a layby off State Highway 1 at Tuamarina on Sunday, was taken to Christchurch for a post mortem examination yesterday. Police spokeswoman Barbara Dunn says the investigation into the cause of the fire continues and at this stage the cause is yet to be established or the body formally identified. Police and the Fire Service were called to the burning Toyota Corolla station wagon about 8.30am. Police would like to speak to anyone who saw anyone in or near the white car. Mud glorious mud There’s face packs galore, but this isn’t a beauty parade. It’s Havelock’s Sport Tasman Muddy Buddy and it’s way more fun. The town is gearing up for the annual slip and slide around the estuary on Saturday February 20, with organiser Jane Miles hoping for a record turnout. The increasingly popular Sport Tasman adventure fun run drew 136 in its first year in 2013 which rose to 359 last year, and it’s Jane’s goal to crack the 400 mark this year. Family groups and teenagers have made up most of the entries in the past, but Jane is keen to get more companies and their staff involved. “This is an ideal event to have a good time with your work colleagues and for some good natured competition among firms.” “I could think of some businesses who would love to see their boss get amongst the mud,” she says. Participants can do one to three
laps of the 800 metre course which includes two slides, a cargo net to crawl under and a zigzag section, all designed to get them as muddy as possible. They are encouraged to dress up for the race, with Jane saying she has seen some wonderfully colourful, outrageous and clever costumes over the years. There is a prize for the most ‘out there’ costume, plus a plethora of spot prizes which will be drawn at the end of the event. Jane says she has been amazed at the support of Havelock and Blenheim businesses which have donated a wide range of goods and products including leisure trips, cruises and accommodation packages. “I can’t speak highly enough of their generosity.” “It is something smaller communities do to support events in their area.” Local groups have also got right

Sailing at the Queen Charlotte Yacht Club.
Have a go at yachting Queen Charlotte Yacht club members invite everyone to an open day on Saturday as part of the Yachting NZ/Volvo sailing “Have a go week”. The Volvo Sailing...Have a go! programme began in 2006 with one trailer, living the dream of Sir Peter Blake that all children should get the chance to go sailing. The Team New Zealand 2000 trust provided the original funding to get the programme started, and the Lion Foundation continued to help as the programme evolved from one trailer to two and in 2009, three trailers. Volvo Sailing...Have a Go! is a Yachting NZ programme offered to schools throughout the country, designed to give students in Years 4 through 8 the opportunity to experience the thrills and spills of sailing in a safe & well managed environment and most importantly, have fun. Support from sailing clubs across NZ is essential to deliver this programme, and at Queen Charlotte we are embracing the
challenge and running a club open day to introduce people from Marlborough to the love of sailing, club spokeswoman Christel Hopkins says. Club optimists, rigged with sails donated from Burnsco, will be available for younger future sailors to try out their skills under the watchful eyes of Neeta Angre-Cameron, our club coach, and the club’s junior coaches, she says. Two Omega yachts, provided by Yachting NZ for the south Island, will be rigged and ready to take crew of all ages on board for a taste of the excitement of wind & water under sail. An all-day sausage Sizzle at the club will round off the fun, Christel says. Coffee, tea, baking and cold drinks also available. The Have a Go sailing open day at Queen Charlotte Yacht Club starts at 11am on Saturday February 13.
Nations to compete in Tasman Seventy teams from 11 nations will come together in Kaiteriteri, Tasman this April for the fifth chapter of New Zealand’s premier adventure race, GODZone. It will be the largest ever field at an expedition-length event in New Zealand. GODZone Race Director Warren Bates says the official team list has a host of national and international competitors lining up for the seven day event running April 2 - 9, 2016.
These include New Zealand multisport and triathlon legend, Richard with his wife Elina Ussher and the Swordfox team, as well ashigh profile rugby legend Richie McCaw. GODZone is the largest and most technically challenging expedition race in the world that will see the teams navigating across some of the most spectacular scenery and wilderness in the Tasman/ Nelson region for 2016.

Keep your puppy’s environment safe. Puppies are naturally curious. Provide a safe area for your puppy to play. A securely fenced area is essential.
All puppies over 3 months old must be registered and microchipped. Neutering your puppy can help prevent the increasing number of unwanted dogs put down every year. Talk to your local vet or Animal Control.
Pet your puppy often. It is important to stroke your pet’s body, legs and head several times daily. This helps create a strong bond with your puppy.
Make sure your puppy gets plenty of exercise. Give your puppy about an hour of walk time a day broken into 2 - 4 walks. Please Note: Before your puppy interacts with other dogs make sure your puppy has had the required vaccinations.
Teach your puppy basic commands. Your puppy will be able to learn most commands while they are young. Teach your puppy to sit, to come, to stay and to lie down. Basic commands are a good basis for a well behaved dog.
Early socialisation of puppies is essential. Consider attending puppy training courses. With appropriate training and time a puppy will grow into friendly, well rounded adult dogs.
