Brigade practises car rescue skills Beachlands Volunteer Fire Brigade members (left) work on extracting a “patient” from a vehicle during last weekend’s motor vehicle extrication course. Seven vehicles from wreckers’ yards were used during the training exercise, which taught the latest in extrication methods using Jaws of Life and inflation techniques to raise crashed vehicles. “It was a valuable course to familiarise and upskill our fire fighters in the most up-to-date procedures,” says fire chief Shane Rutherford.

Candidates talk local issues Hunua election candidates, local community leaders, and residents faced off in a three-way discussion attended by about 100 people in the Beachlands Hall Wednesday last week. The Pohutukawa Coast Community Association hosted the discussion following its agm. Two panels faced each other. The first comprised election candidates Andrew Bayly (National), Arena Williams (Labour), Jon Reeves (NZ First), Neville Hudson (Conservative) and Ian Cummings (Act). Facing them was a panel comprising Bill Cashmore (Franklin councillor), Neil Hamilton (Beachlands Baptist Church pastor), Garth Dawson (Te Puru Trust), Jenny Carter (Beachlands Community Trust) and Gary Veysi (Maraetai Beach School principal). The candidates spoke first. Ian Cummings spoke about Act wanting to extend its “Three Strikes” policy to address the proliferation of burglaries. He also talked about the importance of individual property rights. Neville Hudson spoke of how it was critical for the district to “maintain its beach lifestyle” and the importance of a good reliable town water supply. Arena Williams spoke of the need to ease the pressure on housing and Labour’s plans to build 100,000 new homes. Andrew Bayly spoke of his four point plan for the area: better infrastructure, support for farmers, good health services locally, and an environment where businesses can flourish. Jon Reeves spoke about the lack of a retirement village in the area which meant older citizens had to move away, and the need for better public transport locally . It was then the turn of the local panel.

Neil Hamilton said the area was undergoing huge changes that would affect everyone, how the lack of reticulated water would become a huge health risk, and the need for the community to speak with a united voice. Jennny Carter spoke about the social issues facing the community and the need to plan for our children and grandchildren’s needs. Garth Dawson spoke of how the Te Puru Community Centre was planning for population growth and future needs such as a swimming pool and catering for new sports groups such as hockey. Gary Veysi said there was a need for local people to “own” their local environment by, for example, organising beach clean-ups to remove rubbish and broken glass. Bill Cashmore said Auckland was “growing like crazy” and Franklin, the fastest growing district, faced a “massive challenge”. He spoke of the need for more diverse housing, such as apartment living, and having more businesses located in the area. It was then the turn of the public to have its say. Several in the audience questioned whether residents wanted reticulated water, given that previous surveys had shown strong opposition to having a reticulated supply. A quick poll of those in the audience showed only about 30% wanting reticulated water. Some questioned the statement that “development was inevitable” and said that residents had made it clear that they didn’t want development but were ignored by the council. Others raised the lack of a retirement village, increasing power prices, whether candidates supported raising the drinking age, and whether the council would take any notice of the PCCA’s survey of community needs.

2 POHUTUKAWA COAST TIMES (August 29th 2014)

Days of the village hall meeting not quite dead THE EDITOR SAYS BY DUNCAN PARDON duncan@pctimes.co.nz Despite the internet and social media, it seems the day of the village hall public meeting isn’t quite dead and buried. About 100 people turned up to the Pohutukawa Coast Community Association’s agm meeting in the Beachlands Hall last week. Many probably weren’t there for the PCCA agm, but for the opportunity to hear from Hunua election candidates and the panel discussion with a group of local community leaders. It was a curious format and I admit to being a little sceptical beforehand as to whether trying to mix in general election candidates with a discussion on local issues would work out. But to my surprise, it was a format that worked really well - even if it got a little big ragged towards the end. The result was one of the livelier and most interesting public meetings in Beachlands for many a long day. It’s a huge pity, though, that of the hundred or so people in the hall only four put up their hands to be on the PCCA THE BIBLE SAYS: Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness. committee. The committee has the numbers it needs to carry on, but it would have been nice to have a dozen or so people from across the two communities to add some fresh impetus to what is an important task. However, a couple of those who did put their hands up are new residents who made it clear they wanted to get involved in helping their new community. One of the most persistently annoying myths I always seem to be hearing goes along the lines of: “New people moving into the community aren’t the same as us, they are not interested in being part of the community. The ‘old’ sense of community that Beachlands and Maraetai had is dying.” Rubbish. I would argue that the sense of community here is as strong as it’s ever been. Go down to Wednesday night Touch at Te Puru in the summer, Saturday soccer/rugby/netball, Te Puru Scouts, Mainly Music, play group, school PTAs and the many other clubs and groups and you will see lots of new faces, new families and a willingness to get involved and help out. What’s more, the influx of new families is helping to give many of these groups much needed critical mass.

But the Pohutukawa Coast still faces some huge issues and for that reason the PCCA needs a lot more support than it is currently getting – from both ‘old’ and ‘new’ residents of the area. Interestingly, our Hunua election candidates seem to be more aware of local issues than has seemed to be the case in previous general elections. When I met the Labour, National and NZ First candidates and asked what the number one concern being raised by Hunua residents was, all three replied – without any prompting from me - “public transport”. They have all been getting a strong message from communities as diverse as Pukekohe and Kawakawa Bay that this district is being seriously short-changed when it comes to transport and is overly reliant on the private car. It’s part of the sense of unease across Hunua. Apparently our electorate is now the fastest growing region in New Zealand...and it’s starting to show the strain. Despite our cynicism, it is important our community associations, MP, local board and council members continue to receive our active support when it comes to making our villages and towns better places in which to live.

Council to persist with beach seawall Urgent repairs on the Maraetai Beach seawall were completed last week. This included filling voids behind the wooden seawall and additional drainage. Repairs also involved deepening the seaward face of the seawall in areas where it had been undermined. Remedial works have included additional drainage in the areas that have been backfilled to better cope with the effects of wave overtopping. The seaward face of the seawall has been deepened to protect against undermining during and after severe storm events (where beach sand levels are lowered). In addition, sand will

LOOKING BACK From the files of the Pohutukawa Coast Times From the Pohutukawa Coast Times of August 27 1999... • School principal Bruce Robinson is claiming a new record – the biggest single slab of concrete yet poured in Maraetai. The concrete is the floor for the new Maraetai Beach School Hall... • Pressure is mounting for a second community constable on the Pohutukawa Coast. Celia Martin, a member of the police community liaison committee on the Coast, is writing to local MPs asking for a second police person and encouraging her other committee members to do the same. • Beachlands School is asking the Ministry of Education for a decile rating review with a view to getting more Government funding... A ‘Pride’ winner from Beachlands Longtime Beachlands resident, retired electrician and former volunteer firefighter Glenn Miller is a regional winner in the inaugural Pride of New Zealand Awards which recognise ordinary Kiwis who make positive contributions to their community. Glenn received his award at a recent ceremony in the foyer of the New Zealand Herald. “It was very humbling,” says Glenn of the presentation. “A lot of other people have done a lot more than I have in their communities.” Glenn was originally nominated for the Emergency Services category but award organisors moved him to the lifetime achievement category because of his wide ranging volunteer work in the community. “It was a funny feeling to get public recognition because you never do it for that,” says Glenn. “Everything I have done all my life has been to put a smile on someone’s face.” Glenn is chairman of the Pohutukawa Coast Helping Hand Trust, an organisation he founded last year to raise and distribute funds to help locals. The Trust has a particular emphasis on helping young people. Its first grant recipient earlier this year was 17-yearold Cheree Kinnear of Maraetai, New Zealand’s top female archer who is currently preparing for a Trans Tasman tournament in Brisbane in late September. Cheree has recently screened on television in adverts promoting the Pride of New Zealand awards, along with others who have been helped by “unsung heroes”. She says the assistance from the Helping Hand Trust was a blessing which made a “huge difference” to her being able to compete in the Australian National Youth tournament where she won Silver in April. Glenn and his wife Sandra moved to Beachlands as newly weds in 1975 where Glenn started work as a sparkie. As the couple raised their three children - Angela, Nick and Caryn - they became ever more involved in the local community through rugby, athletics, gymnastics, sailing and touch. Glenn joined the Beachlands Volunteer Fire Brigade in 1979 and retired earlier this year after 34 years of service. Of his time in the brigade, Glenn recalls the camraderie and says crews probably attended more fires “back then”, compared with now, when the majority of callouts are to traffic accidents. “Back then we used crowbars and hydraulic jacks to get people out of cars,” recalls Glenn. He says the widow of a local resident killed in a car accident donated money to get fundraising underway for Jaws of Life equipment. “Michelle got the ball rolling, we held fundraisers, the community rallied round and we were finally able to buy the equipment in 1985,” says Glenn. “That

He coached junior rugby when their son was a youngster and worked alongside Sandra in the local gymnastics club where their daughters excelled. As a couple they were also involved with the thriving local athletics club and the Te Puru Trust which fundraised to help provide what is now the Te Puru community Centre. As well as the Helping Hand Trust, Glenn and a group of his mates have also set up a low key “boys’ club” helping out locals practically with odd jobs like roof painting, gutter clearing etc. They’ve also run a successful first aid seminar with a trained instructor for wives and friends and may facilitate more for the community. Glenn and Sandra are now looking forward to attending the national finals of the Pride of New Zealand awards which will be celebrated on September 10 at a function at the Auckland Museum and will feature the announcement of TSB Bank People’s Choice Award winner. The community is invited to The Trail of Tears fundraising exhibition and art sale at Te Puru Scout Hall this Saturday, August 30. Despite the name, the event is a happy one and is being hosted by Beachlands’ Mel Churton who has painted 200 artworks in the past few months to raise funds to support patient care at Totara Hospice. That is twice Mel’s original target of 100 paintings. The project which could also aptly be called The Beautiful Present, was inspired by Mel’s desire to honour a cherished friend, Moana Young, who died of cancer. “A few days before she

died, Moana poignantly commented that ‘every day is a gift’,” explains Mel. “Her joy was infectious and her loss immense but she left a legacy - a challaenge to those of us left to live in the present and make it beautiful.” And that is just what Mel set out to do by discovering her inner artist, painting pictures and selling them for $20 each to brighten people’s lives. She has also donated paintings to cancer survivors and bereaved relatives. Her aim is to raise $2000 for Totara Hospice. “I’d love to be able to purchase a Lazy Boy recliner from the Hospice wellbeing items wish list to help make life more pleasant for those in their final phase of life.”

Already Mel has raised $1400 and hopes this Saturday’s exhibition and sale will secure the rest. She has been thrilled by the support from family and friends and people in the community who have learnt about her goal. Paintings for sale will include familiar local Pohutukawa Coast scenes, seascapes, religious depictions, kids’ characters and many others. “There will be something to cater for everyone’s tastes,” promises Mel, who has also been taking commissions for her project. As well as art there will be home baked cakes for sale and plenty of fabulous raffle prizes. The Trail of Tears art exhibition and sale will be open from 10am to 12 noon.

Expressions of interest are being called for on this brick and tile single storey home at the end of a quiet Beachlands cul de sac. It won’t be on the market for long. there are around 120 local kids getting together to have fun and play a couple of games of rugby with their mates, and this is what the spirit of New Zealand rugby is all about,” said Mr Seabrook. As well as Sunday practices for younger boys and girls, the local stoush on Father’s Day, the junior teams have in recent years pitched themselves against College Rifles, Te Kauwhata and Hikurangi, Patumahoe, Pukekohe and Northcote. The club is based at the Clevedon A&P showgrounds, not far from their ancestral ground, Mc Nichol Paddock, where the club was formed in 1889, when Clevedon used to be known as Wairoa. Starting with 30 players they first played Taupo Maoris (now Kawakawa Bay) on May 11 1889, riding for four hours on horseback over muddy tracks for the game. After the game they washed in the river. That year they also played Maraetai and Pokeno as well as Panmure and Thames, traveling by boat. In 1893 the Wairoa

The 1889 Wairoa Rangers (from rear left): C. Schmitt, C. C. Munro, P. Graham, R. Burnett, H. Ward, H. Taylor. Middle Row: A. White, P. Hicks, P. McLennan, J. Nicol (Capt), A. Stephens, W. T. Duder, A. Sutherland, J. Condon. Front Row: H. Munro, D. Baird, J. Nicol, H. Turei. Rangers won the first Franklin Union championship, and also in 1896 and 1899, travelling around Franklin District on horseback. Wairoa Rangers won the Hawke Cup in perpetuity after taking it out every year from 1911 to 1914. However, after the First World War started player numbers dwindled away. Though the club restarted and played under the name ‘Clevedon Rugby Club’ from 1923 and won

several championships throughout the depression, it eventually closed in 1954. Anyone wanting to con-

tact the Wairoa Rangers can call Tim Seabrook on 292 8989 or visit the club website at: www. wairoarangers.co.nz

One hundred years since the First World War stopped play, one of New Zealand’s oldest rugby clubs is back in growth mode and preparing for its biggest season. The Wairoa Rangers have gone from strength to strength since they were reborn in 2005 from the ashes of the club of the same name which began in the Clevedon Valley in the 1890s. Starting with an initial Father’s day friendly nine years ago, each year the club has attracted more players and played more fixtures. This year they have already registered a record 110 players, expected to swell to 120, with seven teams taking the field this Father’s Day (September 7th). They are also hoping to travel away to Northcote in a return fixture this season, Club Secretary Tim Seabrook said. “We have had fantastic support from the local community for the Wairoa Rangers events, emphasised by the introduction of two new teams this year in the Under 5/6 and Under 7/8 grades. With seven teams on the field it means that

I’m pleased to advise that the store is to enter another phase: under the new ownership of Susan Alberts and her husband Jan (from Drury), who unlock the door for the first time this week. Susan has some wonderful plans for the future of the store, so be sure to call in, say hello and keep up with the changes! What will not change however, is product quality and the personal service for which the Woolshed is known. Pleased to say that long-serving Karin Botica and Lynne Blyth both remain on staff and I wish Susan and her team every success in the future. Retirement beckons - and after 11 enjoyable years of working with exceptional people and meeting incredible new ones - I’m swopping my business hat for my old gardening one ! I’ll miss all my fabulous customers hugely and sincerely THANK YOU for your loyalty, support and smiles over the past decade. It’s been a pleasure and much fun!

Take care. Sincerely, Susie Schroder
