Hunua triangle reserve to get revamp Residents of Hunua, Ararimu and Paparimu have been called upon to resolve a three sided challenge that has been facing the area for some time. The Hunua Triangle Design Community Project 2014 called for residents to submit their ideas for the beautification of the triangle shaped piece of Auckland Transport owned roadside between Heald and Hunua Roads near Hunua Village. The competition was the brainchild of the Hunua, Ararimu, Paparimu Valley Residents Association who now have grand plans for its future. “We’ve had a handful of very interesting design submissions from schools and community and the next step is for our judges to review them and make comments,” says Residents’ Association spokesperson Jane Berney. An eyesore for many years, the beautification was kickstarted when Franklin Local Board member Malcolm Bell arranged for gorse to be killed off and the triangle mowed and tidied ready for the next stage in its development. Signage donated by a local real estate agency, Harveys, recently went up, but the project is otherwise without funding so the Association is keen to hear from potential sponsors. Jane says the project began with the simple goal of beautifying the triangle as a welcoming landscape when approaching or leaving Hunua Village. “It also comes with the added benefit of targeting the design brief to broaden awareness of our unique region.” Jane explains there is a loose concept that the

A Police spokesperson says ram-raids were also carried out on Gengis Khan restaurant in Manukau and Kimpton Dairy in Papatoetoe during the same weekend. Two more ram-raid burglaries occurred on Monday night this week in Mt Wellington and Papatoetoe. They are part of a spate of similar burglaries across Auckland and Counties Manukau in recent months, targeting mainly restaurants and liquor outlets.

Hall handover target set Franklin Local Board is determined to see its local halls back in community hands by the end of the year. That’s according to Wairoa member Malcolm Bell. Bringing halls back under community management has been a flagship policy since the first term of the Franklin Local Board. But nearly a year into its second term, and the Board continues to be frustrated by slow progress at making it happen. “Initially the halls weren’t going to be handed back this year as promised, but now it seems they will be,” says Malcolm. “Work is now being done on the halls to bring them up to a good state of repair prior to being handed over to interested parties.” The aim is to have local management committees take over the day to day running and basic maintenance of each hall while Auckland Council would continue to fund major repair items. Malcolm says a process will be put in place soon to gather expressions of interest from anyone, or any group, who may want to take on management of their local hall. The management committees will receive the income from the hall plus some funding from Auckland Council – though how much is still the subject of discussion. Since Auckland Council took over hall management from Manu-
kau City Council there have been a lot of complaints and problems relating to hall bookings. The Council has now introduced a uniform set of fees for use of its halls. However, Franklin has been exempted and the status quo with fees will remain until the halls are handed over to new management committees. Halls in the old Franklin District Council area are already managed by local committees, as this was the policy of the former council. But in the old Manukau City Council area – including the Pohutukawa Coast and Clevedon district – halls were run directly by the council, and were taken over by Auckland Council when the Super City was formed. Halls under direct Council control that will be handed back to the community include Whitford, Beachlands, Maraetai, Clevedon (and the District Centre), Kawakawa Bay and Orere Pt. Malcolm Bell says the three Wairoa members and councillor Bill Cashmore have worked hard to ensure these halls come back to the community. “We’re delighted. We did, after all, stand on a platform of ‘putting the local back into local’.”

Maraetai trio cycle to success
A trio of teenage cyclists from Maraetai are highlighting the abundant talent rising in the Pohutukawa Coast Coast Bike Club. They are friends Charlotte Rayner and Kayla and Sarah Russell. Charlotte, 18, has spent most of this year training to try to make the New Zealand team for the World Mountain Bike Championships in Norway, racking up an impressive list of results along the way. But she was devastated when she heard of her nonselection for the National Squad. After five years at Howick College during which time she won fistfuls of medals at secondary schools and national cycling events, Charlotte settled in for some serious training this year, up to 16 hours a week, alongside her job at a bicycle store in Manukau. Despite her rigorous training regime and notching up several more exceptional wins and performances, an illness and two concussions meant that a few races did not go her way, resulting in her non-selection for the New Zealand team. Undeterred, Charlotte has just upgraded her bike and is in another

Charlotte has a young protégée in Kayla, now 15, who is following in her footsteps by blitzing the secondary schools circuit. She has also set her sights on representing New Zealand. Kayla’s secondary school accomplishments mirror Charlotte’s, with a first in her Junior Girls Category in Auckland Secondary Schools events when she was in Year 9. She now competes in the Intermediate category where she has gathered more Golds. At New Zealand Secondary Schools competitions Kayla has also been a winner in cross country, time trial and relay events. This year her highlight has been
a second in the Oceania Cross Country held at Mount Hutt, competing against the best in age groups from across Australia and New Zealand. She is also keen to be selected for the New Zealand team.” Sarah, 18, who trained and rode alongside Charlotte at secondary schools events, bringing home stacks of gold, silver and bronze medals from relay, cross country, hill climb and time trial events, is also now working and enjoys biking as a high level hobby. This year she entered a women’s series of Sunday races around Auckland as well as the NDuro series in Rotorua. Cross Country and Relay events are a favourite for all three girls, less
so the Time Trials. Last year while competing in a secondary school event they all had a ‘massive’ time in a race called ‘superD’, an extra-long Downhill track at Mount Hutt. The girls say they are grateful for the support of family, the bike club and the Pohutukawa Coast environment where they train. In the recent final races of the Nduro Winter series held in Rotorua, the trio each took 1st placings. Sarah came 1st in her 50km category and 2nd overall in her age group, while Kayla placed 1st in the 30km category and 2nd overall. Charlotte also won her age group 30km race and came 1st overall in her category.
Jolly Roger’s co-director speaks out Co-director of the Jolly Roger, Darran Macefield, is “very annoyed” at comments that appeared in an article in last week’s Pohutukawa Coast Times regarding the recent closure of the marina pub. In the article Jolly Roger co-founder, Jacky Lakin, spoke about the pub closing. Darran became a partner in the business in December 2012 after buying a onethird share. He says he “tried in vain to make the Jolly a success” but “ran into difficulties” with business partner Jacky Lakin and her ex-husband Steve soon after becoming a partner. “Two attempts at mediation failed to move the business forward and as I was a minority shareholder I had very little control over running the business,” says Darran. He says he suggested selling the business at the end of last winter. The Jolly Roger went into voluntary liquidation late last month. “It will be a real shame to not see something similar replace the Jolly,” says Darran.

Emotional farewell for boat club legend By Teri Doran Beachlands gave an emotional farewell to a local legend, at a function in the Beachlands Boat Club recently. Bob Curtis has been a huge part of the community for the past seven years, but the well known sailor, and wife Linda, are returning to England for family reasons. He had his final farewell at the Beachlands Boat Club awards ceremony where he was presented with the pres-
tigious Tony Chapman Memorial Award. John Nelson, Beachlands Boat Club commodore, describes Bob as “one of a kind.” Over the past several years Bob has been an active member of the Beachlands Boat Club, and has been instrumental in many initiatives, including setting-up an exceptional sailing programme. On Sundays Bob would spend his time in Sunkist Bay mentoring local kids, teach-
ing them life skills and boosting their confidence in the sea. “Bob has worked tirelessly for this club. He has put his hand up whenever he was needed and has become part of the character and personality that makes this club what it is,” says John Nelson. “He single handedly set-up, maintained and run our sailing programme. “When he goes this place and everyone here is going to miss him.
“For the work Bob has done, the memories he leaves behind will be forever etched into the history of the club.” Bob says moving back home will be bittersweet as a part him will always belong in Beachlands. “I have loved it here, every minute of it...it’s paradise.” “I have met many special people and made a lot of friends, it’s going to be hard to leave.” Bob says his main hope is that the sailing programme carries on.
“I hope it keeps going. I’m sure it will. There are a lot of great people involved that want to see it go on”. Bob pledges to be back, if only to visit his friends and family in the area. BOAT/TRAILER THEFT: A boat and trailer were stolen from a property in Carlton Crescent, Maraetai, on Saturday September 13 sometime between 10.30am to 12.30pm. The boat was on the trailer (Reg 6286Y) and was taken from the roadside. The trailer was not locked as the owner was going to go fishing shortly. The boat is a Ramco, 6.8m long, hardtop with lockable cabin, named “Gale Force” in big bold blue letters.

On the twelth day of Christmas The Beachlands Christmas Parade is on again this year, Saturday December 6 The parade will start 1pm at the Beachlands Domain and travel down Wakelin Rd to the Log Cabin reserve. Beachlands Communiy Trust manager Jenny Carter says this year there will be a theme: “Twelve Days of Christmas” and everyone is encouraged to dress up their floats in that theme. At the Log Cabin reserve there will be stalls, food, and mini-workshops where people can practise their Christmas craft skills (making ginger bread men, Christmas cards etc). In the evening there will be a traditional Carols by Candlelight on the reserve (time to be confirmed). Jenny says the lack of council funding this year means organisers are looking for commercial sponsors to help cover the substantial costs involved in running the parade. Time to clear out wardrobe! Xmas funding scrapped Now is the perfect time to clear out the clutter in your wardrobe! A Spring clothes swap in Beachlands on Friday 10 October will offer locals the chance to revamp their fashion inexpensively. The event is back by popular demand in the Beachlands hall following the success of the first community clothes swap earlier this year. “We thought we would get in early before people clear out their wardrobes for summer,” explainsswap organisor Samantha
Sutherland. “Our first clothes swap was really successful people requested we held another one.” The swap raised $1600 for the Beachlands Community Trust. People can drop off their “gently used” women’s, men’s and children’s clothing, shoes, bags and jewellery to her home at 62 Second View Ave, Beachlands or The Log Cabin during opening hours. All donors will recieve 10 free items of their
choice on the night. “The clothes swap is intended as a service to the community by providing a fun event and a very cheap way to get new clothes and meet people in your neighbourhood,” says Samantha. All items will sell for $1. Entry is $5 including a drink and nibbles. There will also be a raffle and tickets are being presold at Harourts. All presold tickets get a treat on the night which starts at 7pm.
Funding for most Christmas events has been scrapped as the Franklin Local Board tries hard to make the most of its limited funding for community grants. The Beachlands Community Trust asked for $10,143 to run the Christmas@Sunkist event on December 6 this year. The application was declined. However, Trust manager Jenny Carter says the event will still go ahead and planning is now underway. An application for funding for the Christmas parade at Waiuku was also declined. However, the news wasn’t all bad for the Beachlands Community Trust. Impressed by the debut trolley derby at Omana Regional Park last February run by the Trust, the Franklin Local Board has allocated $5000 for running the event again on February 7 2015. The Trust had asked for $6590. The Clevedon A & P Show received a grant for $20,000.
Social Club enjoys museum trip
Beachlands Maraetai Social Club met in the Beachlands Hall on September 2 with 15 members attending. President Daphne Petherbridge welcomed everyone and members were entertained by Bev, Neil and Ray who sang some harmonised songs. The trip was to the Polish museum in Howick which was informative and included a talk, film and artwork around the walls and cabinets. Lunch at the Howick RSA followed.

School’s Aims Games team gets Helping Hand Beachlands School was proud to enter a team of 18 students for the first time in last week’s Aims Games held in Tauranga for intermediate age pupils. The students were helped on their way with a cheque from the Pohutukawa Coast Helping Hand Trust. “We were really impresssed that the children had done a lot of fundraising themselves,” says Trust chairperson Glenn Miller. “It was great to help youngsters who are also helping themselves.” The pupils’ fundraising included running a car wash, car boot sale, sausage sizzle, face painting, raffles, two bake sales and a mufti day at school. “All the students did us proud and they were amazing,” says Beachlands School head of

the top in their field and to see what they can aim at for themselves.” About 7500 intermediate pupils from 228 schools from around the country competed at Tauranga in a variety of events.
Beachlands team members competed in netball, swimming, multi-sports, tennis and cross country events. Kylie says a “huge thank you” goes to the Helping Hand Trust for
supporting the students to get to the Aims Games. “We sent only two students last year - this was the first time we sent a whole team but we hope it will become an annual event for us.”
Pine Wood Derby time at Scout Hall
Much to the delight of the youth members and many of their parents, last week the Te Puru Sea Scout Group held its biennial Pine Wood Derby. Cubs and Scouts were provided with a piece of pine framing timber, four wheels and screws, and encouraged to use their imaginations to design and create a car to race down the group’s derby track. Prior to the derby, each of the sections held a “design and create” evening to which parents, grandparents and carers were invited to bring their power tools to assist the Cubs and Scouts get started on • Children’s Liturgy and their creations. • Sacramental programmes The Scout hall was alive with saws, drills, planers • Returning or New Catholics and sanding machines, and the air thick with wood programme dust. Teen teams race to island
Beachlands Future Leaders is a group of teens who are connecting with the community by creating, and organising, ongoing events and activities for other teens. The first event was held recently when 12 teenagers kayaked out to Flat Island as a part of the Energy Experience Captain Hook and Tiger Lily race. Professional instructors from Auckland Council were there to cheer them on and make sure they were safe. The local Professionals Real Estate sponsored one of the teams. Energy Experience and the local community provided support. The next activity is a community charades event. Cup Final soccer at Te Puru For the second time in four seasons the Counties Manukau Knockout Cup soccer final will be held at Te Puru Park. The match is at 2pm this Saturday when the home team will take on Manukau AFC for the trophy. Beachlands-Maraetai lost to Mangere in its only other finals appearance in 2010. The match will also be the final appearance at the top level for club president Brian Preston. Brian, aged 43, started his football career as an 18 year old with Oratia. Next season he will move to the club’s Over 35s team. “I’m super excited. This will be my last game at this level and to do it winning a Cup final would be a dream come true,” says Brian. It will be a tough ask. Beachlands Maraetai were beaten twice by Manukau during the Conference League season. But the home team has improved markedly over the second half of the season and is optimistic. Players will have to overcome some fatigue, having played six games in 16 days, including
three double headers. The Cup Final will be the highlight of an endof-season day of celbration for BeachlandsMaraetai AFC.
