Families freezing as winter bites wallets By ALECIA ROUSSEAU Winter chills are putting stress on low income families who say they’re struggling to keep warm. Sickness beneficiary Glenn Collis recently received a firewood grant from Work and Income but says he’s already used the load he purchased. He re-applied for another $375 but his request has been declined. “It’s because I got some four or five weeks ago but it’s freezing, we’ve had to use it; I have two children needing this,” Mr Collis stated. He said their house had been insulated last year but had no heater as he couldn’t afford the power bill. “I have applied for the decision to be reviewed but what are we supposed to do in the meantime — freeze?” Ministry of Social Development regional commissioner Penny Rounthwaite said Mr Collis had received 11 hardship grants over the past year including an amount in July for four cubic metres of wood. This was expected to cover his heating for winter, she said. “When he’s approached us for help we’ve stepped up . . . He’s receiving all the financial assistance he’s entitled to.” According to statistics more than 40,000 families had their power disconnected last year. Consumer Affairs says

GDN280814lowincome

FRUSTRATION: Glenn Collis protests outside Work and Income. PHOTO: ALECIA ROUSSEAU. despite price hikes earlier this year, consumers were being offered “competitive” deals however, this competition had not caused prices to drop. Statistics New Zealand reports electricity prices rose three per cent last year compared to a 1.6 per cent rate

of inflation. Levin mother of three Mary Jones (name has been changed) says despite her husband working fulltime they also fight to meet power costs. “Our last power bill was $570 and we have a direct debit

set up for $70 a week. We’re on a tight budget but we’re still struggling to keep warm.” She said their mortgage was $320 a week leaving a little more than $100 for food. The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) believe low income families can do several things to help stay warm. Senior technical advisor Christian Hoerning said consumers were advised to insulate and install effective heating and to undertake simple “low-cost” DIY solutions. “Check hinges and catches or latches on doors and windows — if they’re loose, tighten them up. Weather stripping can be used to seal gaps around many doors or windows.” Mr Hoerning suggests blocking unused chimneys and checking behind cabinets for any draughts. He said households should prioritize keeping their homes warm and dry because cold, damp homes increased the risk of respiratory illness. Ms Rounthwaite said there was a wide range of additional support available to people needing extra help. “Depending on their circumstances this could include a special needs grant or advance on their benefit.” ■ For more information regarding these services, visit www.workandincome.govt.nz.

Mr. Jamieson (Man Stand, August 23,) fails to recognise PNCC has a duty of care to all dog owners and he needs to be proactive in giving true and tested information to the dog owning public about hazards on walkways for either humans or dogs. Isn’t our Dog registration paying his wages? In the past allegations have been made as to a possible dog poisoner and it created a deep sense of distrust between dog walkers and cyclists. This has in fact been mitigated in recent months by the increasing numbers of cyclists who

have their dogs running besides them off lead. Really good for the dogs as the aging population of dog owners are still able to give their dogs a really good run, while they cycle. Dogs have been exercised in the area behind the Esplanade, along Dittmer Drive and in adjoining parks, for more than 30 years before the introduction of cyclists to these areas, so Mr. Jamieson’s call for dogs to be on leads, is absolutely based on no evidence at all and designed to cause distress to the dog owners. The assumed proposition

by the vet also needs to be questioned. Does any true professional give a diagnosis of “could be,” without tests? Why were the dogs not referred to Massey? Has this been reported to the police and has the vet’s case notes been studied by other vets? I invite the dog owners who lost their dogs by ? poisoning to contact me because I would certainly like to take the matter further and certainly like to see that PNCC take responsibility in their posting of information on websites. St John invests in frontline staff By DALE WICKEN St John announced last week 158 additional frontline staff would be recruited in 35 locations across New Zealand. Palmerston North is to receive five new staff members, the fourth largest number after Auckland, Christchurch and Hamilton. Two more frontline staff have also been appointed to Feilding. The appointments are aimed to improve service response times, reduce single crew levels and improve patient health and safety. The Ministry of Health says ambulances should get to priority one patients in urban areas in eight minutes at least 50 per cent of the time. Rural patients should be attended to within 12 minutes and remote patients in 25 minutes.

As of May this year, the percentage of urban incidents responded to within eight minutes in the Manawatu was down slightly as was the percentage of rural incidents responded to within 12 minutes. St John chief executive Peter Bradley said St John had done detailed analysis to understand how current ambulance resources matched patient demand. “This work led directly to a commitment from St John to fund additional frontline staff and to make a number of staff roster changes,” he said. “It’s another step to achieving our ambition of right care, right time.” This is the biggest recruitment of additional ambulance staff in the history of St John. The new positions will be funded by St John, ACC and the Ministry of Health.

Murder trial set for June By ALECIA ROUSSEAU The trial of a man charged with the murder of Whetu Hansen has been set for June next year. Name suppression continues to surround the 56-year-old who pleaded not guilty to the charge in an earlier appearance. He was scheduled to appear in the Palmerston North High Court on Monday however a “delay” meant proceedings went ahead without the defendant. The Judge confirmed the date of the trial, which could last up to three weeks, also setting down a pre-trial date for February next year. The man, who has been remanded in custody since December, also faces

charges of unlawfully possessing a firearm and breaching the hazardous substances and new organisms act. Mr Hansen was last seen on November 24 last year at a Wanganui petrol station. Police began looking for him on December 2 conducting a week-long search at a rural Linton property. Police and Navy divers also searched the Whanganui River in June but declined to comment on what they were looking for.

AWARENESS: Sir John Kirwan addresses a crowd at Feilding’s Civic Centre last Friday. Photo: Alecia Rousseau.

A coach in all aspects By ALECIA ROUSSEAU A crowd of more than 400 people danced and hugged one another while Sir John Kirwan took the stage at Feilding’s Civic Centre. Speaking about mental wellness, Kirwan divulged his own personal struggle with depression and the tactics he used to gain control. A slideshow incorporating music, advertisements and key phrases told of how the once desperate rugby player has transformed into a confident, happy father, husband and coach. “I was dead,” he began. “I was scared of me, my own thoughts, scared of tomorrow — I was alive but I was faking it among the living.” Kirwan, who described depression as relentless, made a life-changing visit to his mother. He opened up, confessing to her he “just didn’t know how to get through this”. Her response was simple — it’s the little things.

“How many of you have had coffee today; I’ve had three. Who actually enjoyed the moment?” Kirwan asked. Taking time out to enjoy these activities enabled him to start over. “I was having 25 anxiety attacks a day . . . then I said I’m not scared of you anymore. I said bring it on — and one did come on but instead of it lasting hours it lasted minutes.” Depression was an illness not the sickness many labelled it as, he added. “I was on anti-depressants for years and I felt like a failure each time I took one of those pills. One day my father put it into perspective — he said get over yourself I’m taking 47 of these b******s”. Kirwan placed a challenge on the large crowd to take a more understanding approach to those suffering from mental illness. “There’s 400 people in this room and if every one of us for the next year helped one person, that would be 146,000 people who might smile at the end of the day.”

Wildbase Hospital funding in full flight By DALE WICKEN Just under $700,000 in funding for the Palmerston North Wildbase Hospital and Recovery Centre was announced by Central Energy Trust on Tuesday night. A function attended by conservation minister Nick Smith, councillors and members of the Wildbase Recovery Community Trust, officially launched the project which will see a world-class facility built in the Victoria Esplanade. The Wildbase Recovery centre will provide permanent breeding and in-flight aviaries. They will go alongside rehabilitation aviaries for some of New Zealand’s most endangered species to recover from illness and injury before being released back into the wild. “While at this time of year we’re often at each others’ throats, if there’s anything that can unite New Zealand across the board it’s the love for our indigenous creatures,” Mr Smith said. “Ensuring the survival of our native species is not just the Department of Conservation’s job, it’s the job of councils, businesses and the public.” He also said under the Department of Conservation would provide $90,000 for the Wildbase project. Wildbase co-director Dr Kerri Morgan said the base would be used as a training facility for veterinary students on residency programmes, and help in educating the general public on ways they can help protect our indigenous wildlife. While Massey University does currently have Wildbase Hospital the facilities are limiting, she added. “Our workload increases by eight times each year but the hospital space hasn’t increased.” Mayor Jono Naylor believes the centre will be a great asset to Palmerston North.

LITERATURE: Books are used to teach children important lessons like how to cope with different feelings. PHOTO: SUPPLIED.

Support for grieving youngsters By ALECIA ROUSSEAU A programme addressing the issues of loss in young children is making progress in the small town of Ashhurst. Seasons, a peer support scheme, aims to assist children aged between five and 12 years old who have lost someone significant in their lives or have shifted to a new area. Co-ordinator Pam Bennett says the programme focuses of providing a comfortable area where children can be open. “It’s not counselling — it’s a safe

place where they can talk about their feelings and devise coping strategies.” Around 25 students from Ashhurst School pass through the course each year completing nine one hour sessions. The children who are divided into groups of three to five, are teamed with two adult companions. “The feedback has been great,” Ms Barnett explained. “We’ve had parents make comments like ‘we’re not getting tantrums anymore’ or ‘my child is willing to talk to me’”. Many parents don’t realise children absorb home-life issues,

she said. “This is about giving those kids something good.” Each term brings a new focus starting with Autumn. “This is about looking at change; then we have winter which is where we get down to the tough stuff; spring represents new life and new hopes; and finally summer is about moving on.” The adults are trained volunteers who provide confidential support, respecting all cultural and spiritual beliefs. Seasons is also used by the Central PHO in Hawkes Bay for their programme, Growing Through Grief.

HEALTH FOR Schizophrenia let’s talk about it This year the World Federation for Mental Health have chosen the theme “Living with Schizophrenia” for 2014 Mental Health Day. Professor George N. Christodoulou (pictured) president World Federation for Mental Health writes: Who lives with schizophrenia? First of all, the people who suffer from it. It doesn’t matter whether it’s an illness or a disorder, whether you call it schizophrenia or integration dysfunction, whether you refer to the people who suffer from it as patients, service users or consumers. What matters is that they suffer from it to an unbelievable degree and the rest of us who are lucky to have escaped from it have a moral obligation to show solidarity and help. We must not forget two things. First, that it’s within our philanthropic, advocacy, professional and social roles to do that and second, that no one is immune to mental illness including ourselves and our families. By helping people with schizophrenia and by promoting prevention, treatment and research into this condition we

help ourselves. So the main categories of people who “live with schizophrenia” are the patients themselves. There are, however, others who also live with it. These are the family members, the carers. They also have to live with this disorder, they know it well. They know its manifestations and they usually know how they can co-exist with it. The help from the family is usually superior to even the best hospital or community facilities, especially in certain familycentered cultures. Yet there is a price to pay for this. And this is the impact of schizophrenia on the health of family members and carers. Supporting Families in

Turbos lose second round

Your lymph is your body’s biggest drain – keep it unclogged! PLEASE! KEEP YOUR BODY’S DRAIN CLEAN.

When our lymph systems become congested and loses their ability to remove waste well, the body will start to speak to us. Symptoms of Lymphatic Congestion are; • Rings get tight on fingers • Soreness/stiffness in the morning • Feeling tired • Itchy skin • Holding onto water • Dry skin • Brain fog • Cold hands and feet • Breast swelling/soreness • Cellulite

If your lymph system is boggy and sluggish your immune response may be compromised. You may think that the answer is merely to detox... BUT, before you jump into a cleansing programme of any kind be sure that the detoxification channels (your lymph) are moving. When your lymph is flowing you most likely will; • Feel better • Look better • Be rid of dark circles • Lose weight • Slim • Have better digestion • Less fatigue • Less cellulite LYMPH:- THE ANCIENT KEY TO LONGEVITY And European people understand this.

Glamour and glitz at dancing festival Big-time ballroom dancing with all the glitz and glamour is coming to Palmerston North this weekend. The 2014 Dancesport Spectacular will be held at Barber Hall, Arena Manawatu on Waldegrave Street this Saturday from 1pm till 9pm. The Dancesport Spectacular is a highly professional, brilliant sporting spectacle that has increased in popularity and status, and is now one of the highlights of the New Zealand dancing calendar. It’s a combination of glitz, glamour, dynamic dancing, exciting costumes and artistry combined with a high level of fitness. Ballroom has the elegance, grace and poise of the debonair men and elegant women, while Latin American is dynamic, exciting and spectacular — a combination of bronzed, hot sizzling bodies moving with great passion. Organiser and City Dance principal Shirley Wall says over 150 aspiring, enthusiastic, competitive dancers from throughout the country (ages ranging from six to 76) including New Zealand champions will compete in a sport that’s increasing in popularity. A magnificent spectacle not to be missed. Doors open at 12pm and the first event is from 1pm. Adult tickets are $16,

Be inspired at Te Manawa What a wonderful weekend we had at Te Manawa causing mayhem with Discovery Time. We had fun throwing all sorts of flying contraptions down off the balcony to the foyer floor below, as did a lot of other people who joined in this popular activity. The Discovery Time educators will be looking at the fundamentals of magnetism this weekend; come along and join in for free between 10.30am and 3pm Saturday and Sunday. While on a guided tour of the TM historic buildings, a group of International Students rocked the Awahou South School House with a version of We will rock you which was most entertaining. Meanwhile in the foyer amid the flying machines, the Manawatu Spinners and Weavers Guild demonstrated their craft. We enjoyed walking around the vibrant GDN280814temanawa Pasifika exhibition PUPPETEER: Kiwi again and were puppets from Anna in time to catch Bailey’s show Once in a Raranga a full moon. group visit from PHOTO: SUPPLIED. Emotional look at gay teen’s life GDN280814laramie

TAUNTED: Matthew Shepard was a gay college student from Wyoming who died just days after after being beaten and tortured by two young men. PHOTO: SUPPLIED.

REVIEW The Laramie Project The Dark Room August 28—August 30, 8pm till 9.30pm Adults $20, Students $12 Performed by Skin Theatre Reviewed by Alecia Rousseau

Theatre doesn’t often move me to tears but I have to say The Laramie Project is an exception. Focused on the dramatic tale of Matthew Shepard, a gay teen from Wyoming who was beaten, tortured and left to die, this show captures the very essence of tolerance and discrimination. A crew of 11 actors take on more than 30 roles. They draw on hundreds of interviews conducted by a theatre company who made a play about the tragic incident. I can’t fault any one of the actors—the multiple changing of roles means as an audience member, you need to be listening. And when you do, you’re captivated by a story of abuse, denial and finally overwhelming emotion. From the young man who found Matt in the middle of nowhere, to the hospital CEO that cared for him, each character is invested in his case. A beautiful performance of Amazing Grace for Matt’s vigil sent tears streaming down my face. In contrast, the lack of understanding from protesters at his funeral was angering but seeing members of one community come together was uplifting.

This hate crime appears to unify members of the Laramie community, many of whom once refused to accept homosexuality. It teaches lessons on behalf of many whose view point comes from religion or

an unwillingness to accept adversity. I believe anyone who sees this show will take away many important messages but most of all, to take the time and identify a person for who they are, not their sexual preference.

By JORDAN GOWAN volunteer writer Technology brings about change and it’s this idea that fuels a city librarian and local organisations’ determination to bring about digital inclusion in Palmerston North. Leith Haarhoff, digital strategist at the City Library, explains digital inclusion to be the idea of equal access to technology and the internet for those who might otherwise miss out on society’s move into the online world. “Its like social inclusion, but specific to the internet.” he says. “Its not only about access though. Rather, we want to help people be included in the whole digital revolution that’s happening.” Digital inclusion initiatives are already running in Palmerston North through programs at UCOL, the library and WINZ which teach digital and technological skills to those in need. One such is the Stepping Up classes held weekdays at the library, which like most of the programmes offered, is free of charge and targeted at the individual’s skill level. While he’s enthused with the effort put in by these organisations, businesses and those who volunteer to help, Leith sees much work to be done for digital inclusion in Palmerston North. “It’s estimated around 26 per cent of households in Takaro and 40 per cent in Roslyn don’t have internet access. If we properly coordinate the digital inclusion effort, we can get this number down to zero.” Leith also sees digital inclusion as becoming an increasingly important issue for schools. “Teachers are moving away from ‘chalk and talk’ to facilitating online learning. A lot of the best course content is free online and the most effective way to learn is the teacher facilitating this.” But because of the digital divide in the classroom and at home, some kids can participate fully in online learning while others can’t at all, he said. To fill this need Leith and others are hoping to implement a digital inclusion project aimed at schools later this year. He sees the role of volunteers in the move towards digital inclusion as essential. “As people who have a real empathy for those on the fringes of society, volunteers have a huge amount to give.” Volunteer roles available: ■ Visitor to the elderly

Its not only about access though. Rather, we want to help people be included in the whole digital revolution that’s happening.

Crouch,

Touch, Paws!

Chew, chew, chew Attempts to eradicate chewing entirely are unlikely to be successful as this behaviour is both natural and instinctual – it feels good to the dog. Chewing is internally driven and internally rewarding – it releases endorphins which are anti-depressant hormones to make the

dog “feel happy”. Chewing is a way for a puppy to investigate its world – everything goes into a dog’s mouth because they don’t have fingers like humans do… think about the way babies and toddlers have to touch and pick up everything around them. Chewing is a compulsive action performed when puppies are teething and is also compulsively performed during times of stress and anxiety as the previously mentioned release of endorphins helps to alleviate the dog’s mental state and make them “feel better”.

You can address chewing by teaching your dog what is appropriate to chew and by providing and encouraging access to at least two or three of these items rotated around, to help keep your dog “interested in the game”. To help reinforce the chewing of these items you can make them more desirable, perhaps by smearing a layer of peanut butter or cat jellimeat onto the toy at the beginning. This is helping to build a positive association to that item in particular:

Sandy Fitzgerald, Totally Vets

“if I chew this toy, I get something yummy!” You can use a calm, clear verbal cue (such us “Ah ah”) when your dog is about to chew something inappropriate – this will be enough to break their focus and provide you with an opportunity to redirect the urge to chew onto something more appropriate.

provided in the form of a daily walk but also in the form of “brain games”, such as the provision of a meal inside a food-dispensing toy – so your dog has to work for its food and enhance its problem-solving skills. Games like this will help to alleviate boredom by keeping the dog mentally occupied therefore less likely to “get into mischief”.

Be sure to remove valuable items from your puppies reach – slippers, underwear, TV remotes and the like. Your dog can not learn to chew inappropriate items if they have never been given access to them. Additionally, for valuable items that cannot be removed (the couch etc.) deterrent sprays may be of help, although some dogs do not find these enough of a deterrent. Control of the environment is important and may mean the dog is required to be crated or kept in an area where it is impossible to chew on anything inappropriate when you cannot supervise them. You must ensure that your dog is being provided with adequate mental and physical exercise on a daily basis, to fulfil their breed requirements. Exercise should not only be

In short you can never stop a dog from wanting to chew; you can only instigate management tools and control of the environment, and teach your dog what is appropriate to chew and what is not (what items correspond with a positive association). Chewing is usually a behaviour that lessens over time (i.e. as the dog “grows up”) and in the case of the dog that never stops chewing, there is often an underlying cause for the behaviour (i.e. boredom or anxiety as mentioned earlier).

SERVICES DIRECTORY Two new services from the caring arborists at All-Tree Services ■ Health and Safety Tree Report service with our qualified Arborists ■ Our air spade provides a solution to tree root problems with pipes, cables or driveways. Spring is almost here and summer’s just around the corner. If you want a garden to be proud of this summer now’s the time to develop your plan and take action. The team at All Tree Services have been working hard over the winter to bring to you two great new services just in time for spring! Our first new service is Health and Safety Tree Reports. This involves an on-site assessment of your trees from one of our qualified

arborists. The advantage of the report is it provides in-depth knowledge of the health of each tree and allows for better planning and budgeting according to the priority codes. We start by identifying the health and safety risk of each individual tree. Each tree is then tagged, numbered and itemised on a spreadsheet recording its physiological and structural condition, along with recommendations and a priority code. Our second effective service is the Air Spade. This is a hand-held tool that produces a supersonic stream of air that effectively penetrates and dislodges many types of soils, exposing the root system of a tree. This allows us to provide a variety of services that can cut or clear roots from things such as pipes or cables, or divert the growth of roots so they don’t impose on areas like driveways. It also allows us to optimise and enhance the health of trees through soil de-compaction and nutrient barriers. There are many different things we can do to help you improve your trees and shrubs for spring. Well cared for trees are not only attractive but add value to your property. As qualified arborists who care, we are highly skilled at pruning and shaping. Give us a call for a free quote (06) 357 8199 or go to www.alltreeservices.co.nz. All-Tree Services — We Care.

Dan the Tiler Man, because experience counts Having tiles installed is usually the finishing touch to a much anticipated renovation or building venture. People choose tiles because they know they’ll tie the whole project together or give something existing a more modern look. Nicely installed tiles give you that feeling of complete satisfaction — which is why you should be very picky with who you choose to install them. While tiles can give you that wow factor, tiles that are incorrectly installed can give you the opposite result. There’s nothing worse than having an inexperienced tiler or someone that cuts corners trying to get the job over with. It’s important to have a tiler who can offer advice when they’re asked for it. Someone that can problem solve and listen to their client about what they want. While the idea of DIY can sometimes seem like a good idea, the job can be hugely underestimated and vital steps can be missed. And while it can be thought of as a cheap option, it’s not so cheap having the job fixed or having to live with the end result. Dan the Tiler Man (Dan Odering) is a fully qualified and

hard hat for a guy the other day with skulls on it, interior trim pieces, its more of an accessory thing. I’m often asked if we can dip a whole car, no you can’t it needs to fit into a dipping tank, and the patterns aren’t that large.

We employ only qualified tradesmen, our experience ensures a high quality end product. Hydro-transferring is an exciting addition to our business and demand for this specialty is increasing rapidly as a great alternative.

MOBILE HAND GROUP LTD

So hydro-transferring is a growing market? AUTO ELECTRICAL From motorbikes to earthmovers, alternators to ABS, Autokraft’s highy trained technical staff cater to your every requirement, in the field or in the workshop. DIESEL From stationary engines to your diesel car or tractor. Autokraft’s Bosch trained technical staff use state-ofthe-art test equipment to offer

you an efficient, specialist service for your diesel. 4X4 From the full range of ARB 4x4 Accessories and 4x4 tyres to fitting and servicing, Autokrafts is your one stop 4x4 shop. VEHICLE SERVICING From an oil change to indepth diagnostics, Aitokraft has the equipment & technical staff to service all your vehicles.

4X4 CENTRE

I believe so. Customers are always on the lookout for alternatives for detailing their vehicles. This gives people the ability to enhance their chrome with hydro transfers as they complement each other well, or alternatively use them alone for a truly individual look. For those that don’t know what it is, how would you explain it? A spray painted basecoat is applied first; colours are chosen to suit the desired look The item is then dipped through a patterned film such as carbon fibre, wood grain, camouflage etc

693 Tremaine Avenue, Palmerston North

Phone 06 359 0100 • www.autokraft.co.nz

Following this clear coat is applied The pattern is paint on a film, so it’s actually like a coat of paint, not a vinyl or a stick on transfer And you can have patterns on that?.

We are hoping to add personalised patterns to our range soon, however for now you can choose from a huge range of off the shelf designs. It’s phenomenal the patterns you can get. You can also change the look of the patterns by using a different colour base coat. Like for wood grain, if you use a white base, it’ll give a bright wood finish where as beige darkens it up, or if you do a dark brown you get a real dark wood grain. The patterns are transparent, so depending what base you use will decide on the finished result. What sort of items have people been getting coated? Rockers covers, wheels, stuff like that really. Even helmets, engine accessories, we did a

How is it price wise compared to painting? Well, you still need to paint the items first, scotch them down, get rid of imperfections etc. So the cost of painting a wheel is around $60-80 then on top of that you’re looking at about $130 a dip, so you’d be looking around $200 plus GST for a wheel. Smaller items will be cheaper as it depends on the amount of pattern used. We’ve tried to price it so people will use it. And how did you get into it yourself?

AMING NEED GLE ION? T ming PRESENTA arine groo

A friend of mine purchased the system as he was looking for something different to do. He told me about it, and I thought it sounded too good to be true, and I needed to see it to believe it. So he got it in and I gave him a hand to set it up, and had a play with it. He was in need of my assistance with the spray painting. We had some failures to begin with, but started getting the hang of it, then he sold his business and building where the gear was. We decided to move the equipment down to our workshop. My employee Sam and I had a bit more of a play with it, till we perfected it to the point we could start marketing it. It’s been a long process, but the results are great now.
