Palmy’s own revolution

INSIDE

this week

By DALE WICKEN When a Facebook rant about child poverty got attention, Jenny Hall decided to do something proactive. She set up a Facebook page called Palmy Revolution which challenged people to make some sort of pledge to help those less fortunate. When the Facebook page gained thousands of views in a few days and donations started coming in, Ms Hall realised she was on to a winner. She said it was the prominence of child poverty in the buildup to the election that prompted her to take action. “Everyone’s giving us these stats [sic] and complaining about the issue but not actually doing anything about it. If one in four children live in poverty, that’s three children and their families who don’t. Everyone can do something to help.” One request that’s proven popular through the page is the $10 challenge where families buy as much food as they can with $10 which is then donated to a family in need. Mother Siobhan de LacyHollows has been doing the challenge with her family and said her children get quite competitive about it. “As a parent it’s good to teach your children about how much things cost.” She also gets her children involved in cooking meals from the $10 worth of groceries. “For the kids to understand they’re cooking something that’s not for themselves is important,” she said. Other pledges have included covering a child’s school fees and giving a child swimming lessons

PHOTO: DALE WICKEN and a pair of goggles. “It doesn’t have to be about food, everyone has different interests and passions,” Ms Hall said. Donations given to the Palmy Revolution team are forwarded to families in need, local schools to distribute to pupils in need of

breakfast or lunch or to Just Zilch. They’ve also been working with Leigh Rosanoski who began the Blissful Acts of Kindness initiative. The overarching idea is to get communities to look after their own and spread the word of

social responsibility, said Ms Hall. “We always talk about how bad it’s gotten [sic] but that’s where it ends for a lot of people.” ■ Donations can be dropped at 10 Pascal Street, Palmerston North or visit www.Facebook.com/ PalmyRevolution to make a pledge.

Why community dental clinics are important

Students and senior citizens are very concerned as to why dental treatment bills have become very expensive and many can’t afford to pay these bills. The story of Massey University student Josh Baker receiving a dental bill close to $1000 is completely shocking (Manawatu Guardian October 9) and morally wrong. This reflects the lack of mercy, empathy and compassion towards others has ended in this capitalist society. Most of us have become selfish, greedy

and driven by consumerist and materialistic desires and this pathway will ultimately lead to the destruction and demise of our whole society. Many citizens have a lot of questions to address. When will be the right time for our community to get together and discuss this issue in town-hall meetings like the olden days? Is there a way out of this by setting up community dental clinics to help those struggling with financial hardships like our youth who are already depressed because of bleak future ahead and huge financial debt they have acquired? Protecting farms from floodwater By ALECIA ROUSSEAU A new site housing four submersible pumps to drain excess water across farmland along State Highway 56 will provide significant benefit to farmers. Burkes Pump Station was open for a special visit last week by Horizons Regional Council who also took the chance to show local landowners and members of the Manawatu Drainage Liaison Committee around the facility. Construction began in January and the entire project is expected to cost around $3.7 million. John Hopkins dairy farms 400 hectares of land within the lower Taonui Basin and said the large flood in 2004 was devastating for his operation. “The station isn’t going to help with something like the 100-year flood but what it will really help us with is the smaller floods.” He says the biggest problem arose when the area started taking in water from Hawkes Bay rivers with no drainage. “The grass only lasts about six days under water; we had to resow the whole 400 hectares in 2004.” Horizons group manager operations Allan Cook says the station, in combination with other works, will aim to clear productive land before significant pasture damage occurs. The station is part of a package

NEWS IN BRIEF Ice Rink sliding back

The ice rink in Palmerston North’s Square is set to return next year, bringing with it a 25 metre long slide and human snow globe. The portable rink will be alongside a winter festival created by Destination Manawatu. The festival is due to last for up to six weeks and will be a biennial event. DM is hoping the festival will include markets, sporting and art events and community activities. The organisation will be working closely with the Palmerston North City Council to develop a proposal for the Long Term Plan.

designed to drain pondwater out of the Basin. It’s the largest of 23 pump stations in the region and will have the capacity to pump 7500 litres of water per second out of the basin to the Manawatu

River. Mr Cook says it’s anticipated the station will operate, on average, 3300 pump hours and shift 22 million cubic metres of water each year.

The pump is expected to be fully active later in the year and has also been made an approved site for rural fire brigades to draw water from in the event of a nearby fire.

Mayoral race heats up By ALECIA ROUSSEAU A 20-year-old DJ with little money has decided to throw caution to wind and contend for Palmerston North’s mayoralty. Abi Symes confirmed last week she will be running for the top position, and if successful, she would be the youngest mayor in New Zealand history. A by-election was announced after Jono Naylor’s resignation and Symes says this is what prompted her to launch a campaign. “I knew Jono was out and something had to be done. I want young people to get involved and excited about politics.” Raised in Palmerston North, Symes says she has no intention of leaving the city. She believes she can offer residents a fresh voice that will represent their needs. Her goal is to raise enough money through the crowdfunding website, Pledgeme to cover her campaign. “My slogan is listen, learn and lead. Over the next four months I will be constantly talking to people and getting their views; it just makes sense.” Bringing a youthful change to the Palmerston North City Council is also a goal.

“We need more women and we need younger people on council. So far speaking with people, they want to see poverty addressed and I think council can do something about this.” Symes is a part-time DJ for Massey’s radio control, has frequented the music scene and is part of the management committee overseeing The Stomach. She says being in touch with the younger generation was important for a student-city like Palmerston North and the recent voter turnout for the general election had shown her the lack of interest in the younger generations. “People need to care about politics, especially on a local level. I want to engage people with the issues that affect them.” City councillor Tangi Utikere announced his candidacy outside the Ashhurst Library on Tuesday while fifth term city councillor and chair of the Community Development Committee Vaughan Dennison has also confirmed his run for mayor. Recognition vital for baby loss By ALECIA ROUSSEAU At 7pm last night, hundreds of bereaved families across the country were united in a ceremony recognising baby loss. The Global Wave of Light marked the end of Baby Loss Awareness Week and gave parents a chance to acknowledge their grief by lighting a candle. Sands Manawatu Horowhenua has been providing support to those whose have experienced the death of a baby for more than 25 years. Co-ordinator Gaylene Vivian says more than 300 miscarriages and 30 stillbirths occur each year in our region. “We try to provide support to as many of them as we can. It’s important for families to accept and acknowledge their babies existed and are still part of the family.” Sands is volunteer run by parents who have been through the same thing as those they support. They believe grief is unique to each parent but most if not all need some kind of support. “We just want people to know we’re

here if they need us,” Mrs Vivian said. “Not everyone comes forward to ask for help but those that do really find it helps.” Statistics New Zealand published a report last year stating in 2010 there were 471 fetal deaths registered and 359 infant deaths. The cause of a majority of fetal deaths was attributed to an unspecified cause while the three top causes of infant death were extreme immaturity, accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed and sudden infant death syndrome (SUDI). The Pacific death rate was nearly twice that of any other ethnicity. Sands was founded in 1986 after Rosemary Westley gave birth to her stillborn daughter, Holly. She came across “appalling” practices and found no support or information for mothers of stillborn babies. The first meeting was held in Palmerston North in April that year. Mrs Westley went on to create the first ever booklet for parents focused on coping with the loss of a baby, at birth or shortly after, in 1988.

Real Christmas spirit By ALECIA ROUSSEAU Rather than asking her friends for presents on her 13th birthday, one Palmerston North teenager asked them to fill shoeboxes for needy children instead. C elebrating Success at St Peter’s C ollege School Production

A Day made Better!

The school production was held 10-12 September this year and what an excellent production it turned out to be at the Globe theatre. “Radiowaves” was written by St Peter’s College student, Brianna Shaw. She also performed in the musical and was the co-director alongside our Head of Drama, Mrs Katy Van Deventer.

Mrs Sarah Hearn, Yr 7/8 Team Leader, was chosen as one of 15 teachers nation wide to be selected in the Office Max “A Day made Better” programme. This programme recognised teachers who go above and beyond the call of duty for their students.

Over 100 students from Year 7 through to Year 13 were part of the production. Singers, dancers, musicians, actors and back stage crew. The production was performed at the Globe theatre to full houses over the three nights and was the culmination of months of rehearsals and hard work. Congratulations to writer-director Brianna, the whole cast and the production team.

“Eye for an eye” fundraising for Fred Hollow’s foundation St Peter’s College has always focused a large part of their Social Justice Outreach to raising funds. The “Key’s to the Kingdom” programme is run during term two. This programme requires students to raise funds by giving of their time and creative energy throughout the term. This year one of the Houses, “Viard”, developed the “Eye for and Eye” concept with HOD Art Lisa Purda. Photographs of their eyes, and the eyes of financial contributors were pasted all around sites in Palmerston North to raise funds for the Fred Hollows Foundation.

All of the collected funds are split between the key charities that the College supports. This year we were once again able to donate funds to the Leprosy Mission, Caritas and the Fred Hollows Foundation. Mop finally gets the chop By DALE WICKEN

After growing his hair for a year, Andy Ward chopped it all off on Friday and raised $4500 for Starship Children’s Hospital in the process. He began his pledge over a year ago after his eight-year-old daughter underwent surgery at Starship. The support and care his family received prompted Mr Ward to do some fundraising to support their work — and the

“hair for a year” challenge was born. “They’re amazing people up there, really good at dealing with children and concerned adults. This is just my little way of giving back,” he said. The shave event, held at Speights Ale House on Friday, included an auction and raffle, with prizes donated by local businesses. There was also a competition to guess the final hair length, which came to just over 24 centimetres.

The final weight of the ‘fleece’ was also guessed prior to the shave which was found to weigh 127 grams once it was all off. “It feels so much better with the mop gone,” Mr Ward said. While his entire head was shaved, the side burns were left on for a few days ‘for a laugh’. During the year he styled his hair in a number of different fashions from pigtails and cornrows to curls and everything in between.

A local plasterer has won three prestigious plastering awards making him the first contractor in the Manawatu region to win the awards. Jeremy Braddock of Completely Plastered Limited won Plasterer of the Year as well as awards for residential work and craftsmanship at the recent Resene Construction Systems Awards. Despite having been in the plastering business for 16 years, it was only the second time Mr Braddock had entered the awards. “I submitted four different jobs but wasn’t expecting to get anything, especially the more personal awards like craftmanship. I was pretty taken aback,” he said. The awards, held in Auckland, recognise the best plasterers under the Resene umbrella and had a number of applicants going for various awards.

Mr Braddock received three trophies and corresponding certificates as well as a bottle of Moet to celebrate the win with. Jason Waterson of Resene Construction Systems said Mr Braddock’s work is always to an excellent standard. “Jeremy produces some outstanding workmanship and has a true passion for the plastering and building industry. He’s always striving to please his clients and produces an amazing job. “He’s a pleasure to have as part of the Resene Construction Systems licensed plasterers and one that keeps our brand at the forefront of quality.” Mr Braddock’s work sees him working outdoors cladding homes before plastering and painting the exterior. His company has been in business for seven years. He said he’s kept busy tending to the Manawatu’s plastering needs but he loves his job.

Don’t feel old enough to ‘retire’? Retire at MiLife Kelvin Grove! Rod Carson can show you the kind of retirement you want at our Open Day on Sunday, 19th October from 11am to 4pm.

The popular Kevin Bloody Wilson is on tour again and he’s heading to Palmerston North. With a career spanning more than 30 years, Guardian chief reporter Alecia Rousseau talks to him about the secret of his success and what we can expect from his latest show. ■ Why do you think so many people can relate to your sense of humour? I’m surprised, I never thought women would like it as much as they do! When I started playing in Kalgoorlie men were taking cassettes home and their wives were listening to them as well. Eighteen months later I’m thinking what the f*** happened? ■ You have courage to push the boundaries, why is that? It’s who I am, I’m a married drunk. ■ How do you deal with the critics? Well they don't usually come to my concerts or buy my stuff so I generally don’t give a f***. I’ve got a mantra tattooed on my wrist D.I.L.L.I.G.A.F (do I look like I give a flip). My uncle used it a lot and when he told me what it meant I thought that is so right. ■ You’ve been to New Zealand before, what do you like about it? I did my first overseas tour there and I was thinking are they going to get it? But they did — I love the place. ■ You have Jenny Talia as a guest on your tour; what can audiences expect from her? She’s my daughter. She’s a great country singer and writer and actually moved to Nashville . . . about 11 or 12 years ago she called me while I was on tour in the UK. She said dad your going to kill yourself you need a support act. I told her I’d tried but didn’t like any. I needed

a female. She said, ‘dad I can do that’ but I was like ‘no, don’t leave your dream’. She said ‘dad I’ve been f****** your songs since I was 15’. So I told her to write me an album . . . and come on tour. ■ Will this be your last tour? I retired 30 years ago. ■ What are some highlights of your career? Lots and lots. There’s been a series of step ups, no lows in my career. I keep working to bigger crowds and I love going rural — the bush not the desert. ■ What can we expect in your latest shows? Expect the unexpected. I feel the audience and plan nothing other than the first song. A lot of it I make up on the spot. You get into a moment and anything can happen. There are no two shows the same. There’s always the good songs but there’ll be some new stuff as well. ■ Kevin Bloody Wilson, The First of the Farewell Tours, will be at the Regent on Broadway Thursday November 27. To book tickets phone the Event Ticketing Theatre Centre on 0800 484 253 or visit www.regent.co.nz.

MANFEILD MATTERS

Big and small engines have been the focus here at Manfeild; as you read this the annual New Zealand Secondary Schools Mini Moto Racing days, not just a great competition but also a workplace springboard for students, will have just wrapped up. This concept of asking students to race 38cc to 110cc midget motorcycles they’ve designed and built to gain NCEA unit standards in mechanical engineering technology is outstanding. While participants experience the joy of racecraft and teamwork, potentially greater benefits are to their future posteducational direction. It creates a skill level that’s been proven as key to unlocking the door to a career in trades. There’s solid evidence of how impressed employers have been by a process that provides achievement standards in design. Along with researching designs and construction, students learn how to fabricate accurately learning MIG welding, lathe turning and drill press processes — all obviously good skills to have when looking at a career in trades. That reflects in the steady growth of this programme. Having begun in 2008 with five schools, 100 students and an afternoon on our back track, the scheme has now grown into a full two-day event — this year with a record 246 competitors and 14 competing schools from around New Zealand — requiring months of planning and preparation by an organising committee whose membership of course includes the man who thought up this wonderful scheme, Feilding high School technology teacher Roger Emmerson. In addition to our own support, it also gets enthusiastic backing from Motorcycling New Zealand and Competenz (the engineering, food and manufacturing industry training organisation) through its Tools4Work programme. It’s small stuff in regard to the modest capacity of the engines and size of the competition ware but obviously one with big ambition. The recent Demon Energy-sponsored D1NZ National Drifting Championship, which returned to our circuit on October 3-4 after a two-year break, is a big event growing all the bigger, not just in participation count but also in audience size. This year’s event was broadcast live to nine countries via the internet. We saw this apparent first time use of extensive international live streaming for a New Zealand motorsport event as providing a great publicity boost for our facility. Drifting is perhaps the most challenging new-age motorsport categories for older petrolheads to accept but it has a huge following, especially with youth, and that is an age group we obviously like to see at our meetings. The Manfeild round was the starting stanza of a six-round national series so we’re told there was intensive interest

in the webcast. Armchair viewers would’ve had advantage on the opening day when rain made the circuit conditions tricky — believe it or not, a sport that is all about sustained loss of traction actually prefers dry (and thus grippiest) conditions because it’s easier to achieve a more uniform outcome. Fortunately, optimum conditions were more prevalent on the next, and main, competition day. Don’t worry if you missed the livestream. Drifting is also a television event and free-to-air content from Manfeild is set to be broadcast nationally by several outlets. The other big motorsport news this week is the unveiling, tomorrow, of the new Toyota Racing Series car; the FT50 that’ll contest the next New Zealand Grand Prix here at Manfeild on February 12-15. Replacing the FT40 car that has

provided such enthralling racing in our national premier racing championship for the past decade, the FT50 is set to provide a great ride for the national and international talent that continues to flock to a series recognised as a real stepping-stone to Formula One and other big top-level formats. The car continues with the potent 160kW E85 ethanol-blend configured 1.8 litre four cylinder engine that’s served the series so well but now driving through a paddle shift six-speed manual and in a whole new setting that provides the very latest FIA Formula 3 safety standards. These include high cockpit side helmet protection, removable safety seat, additional strengthening in the main chassis and front and rear crash structures. This pedigree of up to the minute design and technology ensures ongoing alignment with global expectation. Manfeild, of course, enjoys a very

TRS has played a crucial role over the past decade and TNZ’s commitment to continue providing a championship where young drivers can advance their career and develop their talents is a huge positive. I’ve been invited to Auckland tomorrow to join other guests and media for a first look at the new car that, like the FT40, has been designed and built by Italian manufacturer Tatuus. Mandatory rehearsals on Mondays at St Peters Church Hall, 7.30 to 9.30pm Final dress rehearsal 7.00pm Friday 5 December at the Cathedral Cost; $50 which includes music and venue hire, rehearsal CD and suppers For further information phone President Karen Hall 021-707440

In preparation for the concert, mandatory rehearsals will be held at St Peters Church Hall on Ruahine Street each Monday between 7.30pm and 9.30pm from now on. A final rehearsal with four highly acclaimed soloists and chamber orchestra will be held at the Cathedral from 7pm, Friday December 5. “We wanted people to come and have fun singing this grand piece of joyful and uplifting music which includes the famous Hallelujah Chorus in such a grand place,” president Karen Hall said. “From the beginning we planned to make this an occasion for less experienced singers to get involved and feel the power and enjoyment of a large adult choir environment.” Ms Hall says inviting the public to the one-off concert is a first for the choir and its members are excited about supporting people who have limited choral experience or who have never performed in public before.

Invitations have also gone out to schools and the university. The choir’s musical director is Alison Stewart who has very wide experience in conducting adult and school choirs, as well as musical performance. “This will be a great concert, especially if we can assemble a large choir,” Alison said. “I’m keen to see well over 100 on stage, but really the more the merrier — 150 choristers would be very exciting in the wonderful cathedral!” Those joining the choir will be charged a one concert membership fee of $50 which includes music hire, a rehearsal CD, suppers — which are supplied during rehearsals and general overheads such as venue hire. Inside Te Manawa — finders and keepers Record-keeping, packing, handling and storing items donated to the Te Manawa collection are just part of the everyday care associated with preserving history and collecting memories. With around 47,000 items in the collection, we catch up with Cindy Lilburn in the McVicor Library about her role as a collection manager. For 32 years Cindy has been associated with the museum under its various guises, from the early days as the Manawatu Museum to Te Manawa today. She takes care of the Social History, Ethnology and the Natural History collections to a professional museum standard. “I get to handle the good stuff,” Cindy says, “It’s a perk of the job to see a lot of nice things.” The items in the collection come as private donations. OLD FEILDING MATERNITY HOSPITAL Until the 17th October, people were able to take a final tour through the old Feilding Maternity Hospital before demolition and re-building starts. This turned out to be a huge success with outstanding feedback and a large amount of memories shared. Displays included the old baby-viewing room, old medical equipment, St Johns, the Manawatu Community Trust, with every room open for viewing and many photos and stories to keep visitors entertained. A floor to ceiling coral reef mural represented Feilding Health Care where children were able to draw their own fishy decorations in a room dedicated to children’s artwork which was popular during the school holidays. PHOTO: ALECIA ROUSSEAU By ALECIA ROUSSEAU Close to 20 people from around the world spent last week touring the Manawatu as part of an exchange between chapters of the organisation, Friendship Force International. Encouraging travellers to explore new countries and cultures is the aim of the hospitality programme which sees local residents host guests in their own home. Members of the Manawatu Friendship Force opened their homes and organised outings for the group. way from Omaha said the programme was a wonderful experience. “We get to see the absolute beauty of your country where most tourist lines won’t go. We’ve also had excellent food— especially fish’n chips.” Her husband David agreed. “We get to see it through our hosts eyes—you wouldn’t see it like that otherwise.” Both had established friendships with people in countries like Belgium and felt a connection to those they visited. “When you see events on the news you think about the people you’ve met,” Mrs Schaal said. The group also included visitors from Taiwan, Oregon and our own Whangarei. ■ The Manawatu Friendship Force is open to new members. What do you think is ‘unique’ about your job?

Candie

Being able to work around your kids and family life. You don’t have to be in the office at set hours so you can schedule your day to suit you, which is great!

What do you enjoy most about your job?

The flexibility and variety of the job. Each day is different and I’m not stuck in the office all day, so I can get out and about! I particularly enjoy dealing with first home buyers and helping them find their first home.

Why should people come to you first? I have excellent local knowledge of the real estate market and I thrive on getting the best results for my clients with exceptional customer service. I am also in business partnership with Michael Ford, so when you list with me you get the experience of 43 years of combined property industry knowledge.

What is your specialty within your business?

I specialize in all areas of the market in Feilding and the Manawatu and surround’s, whether it be first homes, executive residences or lifestyle properties.

What advice can you give about your business that would benefit a potential consumer?

Not all real estate salespeople and companies are the same. Don’t go with whoever offers you the lowest commission rate or the highest price for your property. Go with whoever you feel comfortable with and trust. (This is important as selling your home is usually one of the most important decisions in one’s life), someone who will work hard for you and get you the best market price in the best time frame possible, and most importantly someone who will do what they say they will do!

Currently we are running an exciting new Spring Promotion - When you list with us, you will receive FREE to you, your choice of the following: Internal house cleaning, External house cleaning, Garden and/ or lawn maintenance, Window cleaning (conditions apply)

Women in Business

Q: What do you think is unique about your business? A. What we think is unique about our business is that it is a privilege and an honour to serve and assist people at a very sad and emotional time of their lives as they farewell their loved ones. We take pride in being able to guide families and individuals during this difficult time. Working in a funeral home requires a unique skill set; including large measurers of patience, empathy, sympathy, humility and a good listening ear. Q: What do you enjoy most about your job? A: The thing that we most enjoy about our jobs, and that which gives us the most satisfaction, is being able to guide and assist families and individuals to create ceremonies and farewells that celebrate and honour the deceased. When people come back to us and say 'thank you, that was what mum would have wanted' or 'that was better than we ever imagined, thanks for your guidance,' it is hugely satisfying for us all. Q: Why should people come to you first? A: People should come to us first because we are friendly, approachable and flexible. We are a traditional firm with a modem professional approach. Q: What's your specialty within your business? A: As women we are able to operate on many levels, with many hats; as funeral directors, event managers, office administrators, drivers, we even pour the tea alongside our male colleagues. Q: What advice could you give about your product or service that would benefit the consumer? A: The advice that we would give is never to be afraid to ask questions; there’s no such thing as a silly question. If you need to know, ask.

There is something very re-assuring about dealing with successful people, and not only that, but to be part of the highest performing real estate team in the region certainly gives my clients a competitive edge in dealing with every aspect real estate. What is your speciality within your business or service? Residential and Lifestyle property in an around the Feilding location. What advice can you give about your business or service that would benefit a potential customer? Whether buying or selling or simply undertaking market research, always take time to speak to a realtor about your overall goals and plans before launching into action. There are traps and pitfalls everywhere, but good clear advice at the beginning will take much of the stress and delay out of most transactions, and produce better results.

Q1. What do you think is ‘unique’ about your business for service? Having been through an injury myself, I know the difference a financial plan with the right cover in place can make to a family in their time of need. I feel that knowledge gives me a unique advantage of understanding people’s needs.

Q2. What do you enjoy most about your job? The most enjoying and satisfying part of my job is knowing that I am making a difference to my clients by making sure that they have the right tools in place to ensure their financial security. Q3. Why should people come to your business first? I believe that people should come to me first because as an Authorised Financial Adviser, I am bound by a Professional Code of Conduct and I give a genuine, honest opinion regarding what cover is already in place and sound advice about what benefits are fit for purpose, rather than trying to ‘sell a product’. Q4. What is your specialty within your business or service? I believe that my specialty within my business is that I pride myself in giving my clients the knowledge and understanding that they need to make informed decisions that will enhance their lives now and in the future. Q5. What advice can you give about your business or service that would benefit a potential consumer? The best advice I could give anyone is to regularly review their financial plan to ensure that it still matches their needs and to make subtle changes to make sure they are on track to achieve their goals. Things like checking the insurance cover in place and who will receive the money at claim time, their risk profiles on their KiwiSaver and investments to ratify the investments that they are holding in their portfolios, their Prescribed Investor Rate (PIR) rate to confirm that they are not overpaying tax. For a no obligation consultation, give me a call.

So, she’s got breast cancer . . . How should a man deal with the fact the woman he loves has been diagnosed with breast cancer? She’s devastated. So are you. She admits it, acts like it. If you’re a typical man, you don’t admit you’re devastated (perhaps even to yourself), and you focus on being a tough, tower of strength. This is how guys are supposed to act, right? Maybe not. If you really want to support the woman you love through her diagnosis and treatment you owe it to her and to yourself to make sure you’re fit, well and mentally prepared for the task ahead. ■ How she might be feeling: Woman with breast cancer often say they don’t have time to think about their partner much. CONSUMER ADVISE

Tips for keeping things neighbourly Being a good neighbour is an important part of living in your community. ■ A good neighbour is: Considerate — respects people’s rights and privacy. Tolerant — understands that people have different ways of doing things and that is okay. Concerned — notices when something is wrong and does something about it. Responsible — for the actions of their families, guests and pets. Law abiding — does not engage in and reports illegal activity to the Police. ■ Ways to maintain a good neighbourly relationship include: Keeping an eye on neighbours’ properties when they are away and reporting any suspicious activities.

Keeping the noise coming from your place (music, parties, alarms, dogs, cars and so on) at a reasonable level, particularly at night.

Being tolerant of your neighbours’ children. Keeping shared driveways clear. Keeping your section tidy. Even if you usually get on well with your neighbours, there may be times when you disagree. Talk things over when there are problems, listen to other people’s points of view and try to come to an agreement that works for everyone. If you can’t resolve the problem you should report it to the proper authorities. If you have problems with loud noise, call the Noise Control Office at your local council. Illegal activity should be reported to the Police. If you have any problems with dogs, call the Animal Control Office at your local council. If you think

someone is in physical danger, particularly children, you should call the Police immediately. ■ For free and confidential advice and information on this or any other matter visit the Palmerston North Citizens Advice Bureau in Community House, 77 King Street, Palmerston North. We’re are open Monday to Friday, 9am 4.30pm. Call us on (06) 357-0647/ 0800 FOR CAB (0800 367 222) or send an email to cab.palmn@xtra.co.nz. There’s a free legal advice service by qualified lawyers most Thursday evenings at 7.30pm and a JP is available on Tuesdays from 12.30pm until 3pm. No appointment is necessary for either of these services.

Speedway off to roaring start By PETER FRANKLIN

Speedway fever took hold on Saturday as fans from near and far streamed into Palmerston North’s Robertson Holden International Speedway for the official opening night of the 2014-15 season. With big fields of local competitors, mixed with visiting drivers from Auckland, Kihi Kihi, Tauranga, Hawkes Bay, Rotorua, Stratford, Wanganui, Wellington and Nelson, the stage was set to give the fans an exciting night of racing. The big news coming to hand on Monday was that Kerry Humphrey (superstock 79p), who was taken to hospital after a massive crash which left his immaculate new car perched on the pit gates after a massive shunt from Asher Rees, has been released and is recovering at

home. Track promotor Bruce Robertson said he had spoken to the family and Kerry will be back behind the wheel in three weeks. But it was 58p Peter Bengston who showed the 23 superstock field a clean pair of heels on his way to a speedy victory, with 10p Peter Rees working his way up to second place from grid 16. A bit of a historical grudge between 71p Shane Mellsop and 93p James Soane, resulted in Soane being taken into the fence, damaging his front suspension and putting him out for the night. “We had a bit of a thing going a season or so ago and I thought it was over, apparently it’s not. I normally carry enough spares with me to keep the car going if something like this happens but, Murphy’s law, the night you don’t bring them is the night you need them,” Soane said.

Visiting Nelson superstock driver 18n Shane Harwood took out the second superstock heat from Peter Rees and was comfortably leading the feature until a self-inflicted spin ended his race. Bengston notched up his second victory of the night after a good battle with 471p Benji Sneddon. A huge number of stockcars rolled on to the track for their first heat of the new season. In total, 35 cars lined up behind the pace car for their first taste of competition. Most negotiated the opening race successfully. But it was car 11p Peter Rees who won the opening heat from 126p Asher Rees, with the rapid 94p William Humphries interrupting the family trifecta in third ahead of 127p Ethan Rees. An excellent battle developed between 34p Rob Mason and 722p

David Lowe, but was halted by the red light after a pileup in turn three on the last lap involving 67p Alec Wilson and 55r Les Holland. Lowe had spun Mason to take the lead but, with the race abandoned, Mason was awarded the victory. Another superb battle culminated on the final lap of the feature, with 81r Damian Orr looking to have resisted the challenge of Peter Rees, Orr came out of turn four only to be slowed by lapped traffic, allowing Rees to strike, turning Orr around and getting the win. For those whose pleasure is derived by the sight and sound of the open-wheeled brigade, they were not disappointed with wins shared between 2nz Dean Brindle, 82a Jamie Larsen (Kapiti) and 3nz Jamie McDonald, with 21w Stephen

23

Taylor right in the mix also. The 800 horsepower machines were right on the limit in all their races feeding the adrenaline junkies. Minisprint wins were also shared around, among 93p Karl McGill, 4w Shane Simpson and 8p Nathan Jefferies all taking turns at carrying the chequered flag. Also on the pace was 97p Jordan McLeod, who looks to be a driver worth watching this season, along with 61p Carol Golding and 41p Shane Dewar. The sidecars, again, kept the crowd entertained with 1nzp Paul Humphrey and Ben Franklin blasting to an opening race win. That was the extent of their success though as 97p Mike Zachan and Jason McKinley took out two races, as did Kim and Kerry Johnston, including a fine feature victory for the husband and wife combination.
