Kids love champ Val By DALE WICKEN Getting children active was the aim on Tuesday as world shot put champion Valerie Adams came to town for the day. The world champion is on a ‘Get Set Go’ tour of the country organised by Athletics New Zealand and New Zealand Post, and said she loved getting out in the community and meeting the “future of our country”. Despite being three weeks post operation and with one arm in a sling, she joined in the warmup with the children and took time to take photos with each school group and answer their questions. One question asked was ‘How did you get so tall?’ to which she replied “I get a lot of sleep and eat my breakfast every day.” She asked them what they ate for breakfast and told them it was important to eat their weetbix and milk so they can group up big and strong. Ten schools from across Palmerston North joined in the fun, moving between 11 different stations with activities like throwing, jumping and catching. “All of the activities have specific functional purposes and also focus on developing interpersonal and social skills,” said Karen Laurie of Athletics New Zealand. “Having fun is a huge aspect but we’re also building skills that they’ll need for sport and activity.”

While Valerie said she’s one of the older ones in world shot put now, she hopes to remain at the top for as long as she can. She said winning and representing her country was what kept her motivated despite her long-term dominance in the event. “After recovering I’m looking forward to getting back into my training and building up to the world champs in Beijing in August.” From there it’s the 2016 Rio Olympics and while the 2020 Olympics are a while away, she hasn’t counted them out just yet. “It’s not easy doing what we do but if you set goals and love the goal, commit to it and work hard you’ll be successful,” she said. Palmerston North was the third stop of the tour which sees Valerie visiting smaller towns as well as some of the bigger centres. Prior to the event with the schools, she visited the Mail Centre on Matthews Avenue and stopped in at the Church Street Post Shop for a public meet and greet in the afternoon. “It’s so important to connect with our communities and if I can help inspire people through these events then I’ve done my job.” The ‘Get Set Go’ programme has been running for four years and has involved 30,000 children. The programme teaches under sevens the fundamental movements and skills they need to increase their

I want to congratulate 20-year-old Abi Symes for her courage and strong self-determination to be part of the mayoral race in Palmerston North which is heating up (Manawatu Guardian October 16) in our city. Like myself and many other youth, Abi is sick and tired of our political system tainted with bureaucracy. Palmerston North City Council lacks economic management and has failed miserably to generate enough employment opportunities for its younger generation. Our city is dying and businesses are struggling hard to pay bills. The time has come for our small economy to have an electrical shock and to be revived from its roots to finally give our depressed, angry and frustrated youth some hope. Abi is nobly striving to see the poverty

problem in our city finally addressed and resolved with practical solutions in our city council forum rather than continuously sweeping this problem under the rug. Poverty is an evil in any society whether it’s rich (natural resources) or poor (in utilisation of human capital). Poverty is a manmade problem, at the same time it can only be resolved with a manmade solution. According to Eastern cultures, the main reason why people are poor in the first place is because of the lavish spending of the rich. Youths are the engines of economic development and the future leaders of our country. The time has come to listen to their concerns and address them critically before it’s too late. How far our political bureaucracy will continue to leave more people struggling, only time will tell. SARAH AL-HARRAN Palmerston North

Poverty challenge harder than expected By ALECIA ROUSSEAU Taking up the Live Below the Line Challenge was an easy call for Heather Knox who saw it as an opportunity to raise awareness of those living in poverty. The mother-of-two and her husband had just $11.25 each to feed themselves for five days. The grocery list was shortened down to canned mackerel, potatoes, tinned tomatoes, pasta and rice. Mrs Knox and her family completed the challenge last year too but says this time their focus changed from how they were going to get through, to those living in poverty. “It’s much harder than you think. You start to realise how much you actually spend on food each week.” Their awareness was raised throughout the campaign which encourages participants to document their daily meals and engage in discussion. Oxfam, which leads the initiative, says the goal is to raise widespread awareness by allowing participants to gain an insight into hardships faced by those

living in extreme poverty. “You forget the luxury items you can just go to the fridge and pull out,” Mrs Know said. “Things like coffee or milk for the children were things we couldn’t keep giving—if you go over your limit one day you run the risk of having nothing the next.” Society’s view that those living in poverty should be baking their own bread and growing their own vegetables is too naive, she added. “Production adds up too. To go out and buy compost is like $30.” Despite praise from other people, Mrs Knox said she felt more could be done to address these issues. “I would have walked past the food donation box at New World probably 100 times — last week I put something in. There’s got to be plenty of people who can drop something in after they’ve done their big shop.” Live Below the Line officially raised more than $360,000 nationwide. Local athlete fit for crossfit bid By DALE WICKEN A Palmerston North crossfit athlete is hoping to reclaim his title as New Zealand’s fittest man in the upcoming Battle of the Fittest in Auckland. Mahdi Te Heuheu won the title last year in an event that has become New Zealand’s longest running and most prestigious fitness competition. As well as being a coach at local CrossFit affiliate CrossFit Mana, Mr Te Heuheu is a soldier in the New Zealand Army. “It’s been a huge challenge balancing my training with work and the demands of a young family, but I know it’s worth the sacrifice. It’s what I’ve got to do to not just be competitive, but to win again,” he said. The Battle of the Fittest pushes athletes to the extreme in crossfit style workouts which none of the athletes know of until they have to complete it. The gruelling workouts test a range of functional movements including moving large loads long distances as fast as they can. For the first time this year the event is open to Australian athletes and 160 competitors are expected. “There’ll be some super strong and talented athletes there, it’ll be the ideal test of my training efficacy and will highlight any areas I need to work on,” Mr Te Heuheu said. “The level of CrossFit competition

Manawatu lecturer’s Nobel Prize connection By DALE WICKEN While not many people will have heard of this year’s winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, a local French lecturer hopes to change this. Massey University’s Dr France Grenaudier-Klijn would call herself a ‘groupie’ of French author Patrick Modiano, so wouldn’t disagree with his win of the prize, and believes his books would appeal to local readers. Modiano’s books are all based in Paris and explore themes of disappearance, memory and the traces that people leave behind. “Every time I read them I find

something else deeper and new,” she said. “I love him so I’m completely biased but he’s a really important writer, really relevant to our times.” Her obsession began when her mother sent her one of his novels in 1994 and since then he’s become a major part of her life. She currently teaches his work in a French Literature paper and is in the process of writing a book which analyses the femininity in his novels. “He has a way of portraying history without being definitive or didactic. He mixes tenses and historical eras as well as imaginary characters.” Dr Grenaudier-Klijn has also

done work as a literary translator and would love to translate Modiano’s works into English one day. So far only seven of his 28 novels have been translated into English. And has she ever met him? “That’s a question I get asked a lot. I’ve been to his old apartment but ideally I would love to bump into him on one of the Parisian streets in his novels, that would be perfect,” she said. Dr Grenaudier-Klijn will be holding a public lecture about Patrick Modiano at the Palmerston North City Library in November — date to be confirmed.

Unsuspecting cat shot By ALECIA ROUSSEAU Emma BeauchampCrookes is going to be spending the next few weeks taking extra care of her beloved cat after he was shot twice with a rifle or airgun on Tuesday night of last week. Latte, a purebred Siamese, was wandering close to his home on Taupo Terrace in Feilding when it is thought someone possessing a rifle or airgun decided to shoot him. His owners found him in a pool of blood the next GDN231014shotcat morning and rushed him to the vets who found two RECOVERING: Latte has two bullets lodged in his chest bullets lodged in his chest after being shot last week. cavity. The bullets couldn’t be removed without causing further damage and despite a positive outlook on his recovery, he has sustained some lung damage. “We thought at first he’d been attacked by a dog but when we raced him to the vet, they did an x-ray and it showed the two hunting slugs,” Miss Beauchamp— Crookes said. “He was shot from behind the shoulder — he’s very lucky it missed all his vital organs.” She said the family contacted Police who have had no luck finding the culprits. “He doesn’t wander far so we know it’s happened in this neighbourhood. He’s very friendly too.” Animal welfare group Paw Justice have also been advised and are now offering a $500 reward for information leading to a conviction of those responsible. ■ If you have any information, please contact Paw Justice by emailing info@pawjustice.co.nz or phone (09) 550-0541. Growing healthy hearts By ALECIA ROUSSEAU Teaching younger children the importance of having a healthy heart has earned a local early childhood centre two awards from the New Zealand Heart Foundation. First Steps in Palmerston North was recognised with the Pa Harakeke Healthy Heart Awards for their work on Tohu Manawa-OraKohungahunga. They celebrated by hosting a red and gold themed party where the New Zealand Heart Foundation’s mascot Hearty also made an appearance, formally handing over the two certificates. The free-of-charge programme promotes healthy eating and being active through policies, menus and professional development. Centre manager Megan Edwards said she was extremely proud of the centre’s work. “Not many centres get two awards. We’re unique, we provide morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea — we have two cooks who prepare everything fresh.” The children are involved in growing and preparing their own vegetables and are kept fit with music movement and sports. “It’s about changing their way of thinking,” Mrs Edwards said. “We eat sausages but the healthy

PROUD: Children from First Steps swarm Hearty for a high-five. PHOTO: ALECIA ROUSSEAU kind and the kids love it.” Mrs Edwards said the large number of children attending the centre meant she felt a sense of responsibility to the community. “We are licensed for 211 kids — that’s a huge impact we have. The programme makes the children more likely to learn and participate.” Heart Foundation health promotion coordinator Midcentral Marian Alleston said the centre stood out in particular for its professional development.

“The teachers have attended nutritional workshops and the chefs have worked so hard to get the menu up to scratch. It’s a structured programme and Megan is great, this is one of her priorities.” The innovative Tohu Manawa-OraKohungahunga programme has been taken up by many childhood centres throughout New Zealand. It is designed to promote healthy eating and active movement for those under five and their families.

Angels fight family violence Each hour of each day around seven New Zealand children are caught up in family violence. Family Works, part of Presbyterian Support Central, is calling for new Guardian Angels to help children and families experiencing family violence in our community. The vision is to make Aotearoa, New Zealand the best place in the world to grow up. Yet current statistics paint a different picture. According to data summaries provided by New Zealand Family Violence Clearinghouse 2014, last year there were 95,080 family violence investigations by New Zealand Police. More than 60 per cent of these investigations involved at least one child under 16 years old. In 2013, 10 children and young people were killed by a family member. Many more were hospitalised after being assaulted by a member of their family. Family Works Central provides a range of social services to support children, young people and their families who are experiencing poverty, violence and grief throughout the lower North Island. These services include support to develop strategies for keeping children safe as well as social work and advocacy services, counselling, budgeting advice, and parenting

GDN231014enliven

support and education. These services are partially Governmentfunded but demand means there’s a funding shortfall every year. Family Works Central general manager Julia Hennessy says there are too many children whose lives are profoundly affected by violence. “Family Works helps 15,000 at-risk children and their families every year — that’s 40 people a day. Family violence and conflict are high on the list of the reasons for referral, along with poverty. “In some families, violence has been normalised in day-to-day life. Perpetrators can change if they are given the opportunity and their partners and children can be supported to feel strong and safe but they need to have access to the right

support.” Julia says the Angel Month campaign appeals to ordinary Kiwis to make a difference for children like Andrew who live in fear of their lives. “Sadly, family violence occurs in every neighbourhood. It’s a huge issue and everyone can do something to help children feel safe and to help make New Zealand the best place in the world to grow up.” ■ Manawatu residents can become a Guardian Angel by signing up to make a monthly donation of $30 to help families experiencing poverty or violence to access Family Works services. One-off donations are also appreciated. For more information or to make a donation, visit www.angels.org.nz or call 0800 20 50 80.

Networking an aide for women By DALE WICKEN While female-owned businesses are on the rise around the country, a MYOB report has shown just 19 per cent of small and medium businesses in the Manawatu are owned by women. This compares with the national average of 41 per cent, a 57 per cent rate of businesses in Waikato and 51 per cent in Northland. A recent event held at Caccia Birch House hosted 14 local female business owners who each shared their experiences with more than 100 people who also attended the event. Baby Beginnings owner Carolyn Tranter said networking with other business owners was a great help. “Surrounding yourself with likeminded women who support and encourage can help you grow your business.” She said one of the challenges of being a

small business is she has to be more inventive and flexible with resources because she doesn’t have access to a large marketing budget. She also believes small businesses are important for communities. “Small local businesses are often run by owner/operators who are members of the local community committed to

supporting their home town.” The MYOB business monitor also indicated the main reasons for women venturing into business were for lifestyle changes, to invest in their future and to make money from a hobby or interest. Other businesses showcased at the event included Stamp and Scrap and Pania Ryan Beauty Therapy.

Immunisation scheme scoops top award Approximately 95 per cent of children needing immunisations in the MidCentral region have now had their shots thanks to improvements made by the MidCentral District Healthboard. The immunisation scheme was given the Most Significant Improvement Over 10 Years Award at the 10th MDHB Health Awards held on Friday night. The DHB is now sitting at number one for immunisation rates, a hike from its previous placing of 17. The team which had no records to begin with, now have over 670,000 files. Sending out overdue reports to children needing immunisations have also been established. Judges noted the team was now a national leader in the field and saw their networking between agencies as impressive. Further initiatives over the past decade also include the development of a service for Te Wakahuia Manawatu Trust which aims to reduce barriers to immunisations by offering parents education and advice and performing the immunisation in the parents’ setting of choice. ■ For a full list of winners, please visit www.midcentraldhb.govt.nz.

Shuttle provides service for locals and visitors By DALE WICKEN Melissa Downey was pleased to learn she’d won passes for the Te Apiti gorge shuttle, despite never having used the service before. She was the winner of a five-trip pass for the shuttle after she filled in a survey about the service. Destination Manawatu has set up the service in conjunction with the Gorge Biodiversity group and Tararua, Horizons and Palmerston North City Councils. Emma Snelgrove of Cross Country Rentals, who operates the shuttle, said they’re working together to provide this service for locals and visitors, but if it’s not used it may not continue. The service provides transport between the iSite in The Square, the Manawatu Gorge walk and the Bridge Cafe. “If people don’t use it they’ll lose it,” said city councillor Chris TeoSherrell. “We want it to be a viable service so this is the final trial before we decide how to proceed.” This follows on from a 10-week trial which took place last summer. “We take group bookings too, a lot of people think we have limited places but there’s always space and we can go and get a bigger vehicle. Nobody gets left behind,” Ms Snelgrove said. The shuttle has received a high level of support from community groups and organisations, including the Horizons Regional Council bus service. Have a fling with spring in Foxton This coming Sunday is the annual Spring Fling in Foxton. Beginning at 9am, there are more stalls than ever and plenty to see and do. Part of this year’s entertainment includes Fire Brigade characters Amber and Flint. This is a must-see attraction for the kids. Also on site will be bouncy castles, the horizontal bungee run, a giant slide, mini hotrods, a merry-go-round and giant bumper balls. Food will be served direct from stalls and you can enjoy this cuisine on some of the outdoor cafe chairs. All day entertainment will be provided by Gravel Trax who will be performing some country music and chart-topping band ReZist will also be on stage. Event co-ordinator Lynda Strawbridge

said having a draw card such as ReZist, who have recently won a major competition, brings an edge to the Foxton Spring Fling. “These guys, mainly local, are certainly getting the gigs, people are taking notice of this amazingly talented band and we are lucky to have them perform.” ■ The Foxton Spring Fling will be held in the main street in Foxton from 9am to 3pm and will go ahead, regardless of weather. Cost is $2 for adults and children Under 16 are free. GDN231014springF

Flawless acoustics at Bent Horseshoe This year’s New Zealand Country Group/ Duo of The Year and 2014 New Zealand Best Folk Album Nominees, Into The East, have teamed up with festival favourites The Federal String Band to bring Palmerston North a night of flawless and flooring acoustic music. Graeme Woller (Into The East) has coined the genre “Ameri-kiwi-ana” to describe the smooth mix of Americana,

Folk, Country and Bluegrass both groups glide in and out of. “We’re at a great place in New Zealand music where everyone’s bed-hopping genre. There’s clear Kiwi sound developing that doesn’t try to sound like someone else, it just unapologetically stands on its own feet.” Both Into The East and The Federal String Band have been selected as guests

at Wellington Folk Festival’s 50th Anniversary weekend after both acts travelled as festival goers last year and fell head over heels for each other’s sound. McBride says, “We (Into The East) were wandering around the grounds and heard the rapture happening in the kitchen. We were sorely disappointed to find out that it was regular people and that they just had a gorgeous sound.” Since then both acts have achieved tremendous praise individually but couldn’t stay away long, appearing in Taranaki recently to rave reviews. Their appearance in Palmerston North is both a ramp up to Wellyfest and a chance for another musical group hug. “We have so much respect for each other.” ■ Ameri-kiwi-ana Extravagana with Into The East and The Federal String Band tonight at the Bent Horseshoe Cafe in Tokomaru. Show starts 8pm. Costs $20 at the door.

Reel issues at Reel Earth An Australian movie that’s been receiving accolades and rave reviews is being featured at this year’s Reel Earth film festival. The Man from Coxs River directed by Russell Kilbey follows a project to rid the Burragorang Valley of wild Brumbies that locals fear are polluting the Sydney water supply. The film is centered on bushman Luke Carlon and his love for the area and tells his story as well as the story of local ranger Chris Banffy who has to contend with the rules and regulations of higher Government powers. This remarkable film is showing on Friday October 31 and will be followed by the chance to meet, greet and hear from the director himself. Festival organiser Sandra Schalk says the aim of the Reel Earth Festival is to inspire people by showcasing local initiatives and projects that aren’t outside the realm of possibility.

GIVING: Sarah Walker at a Variety Bikes for kids presentation.

Wheels for deserving children By ALECIA ROUSSEAU Do you know a child who often goes without and would love nothing more than to have his own bike? More than 450 are being offered to children across the lower North Island in a competition run by Variety, The Children’s Charity. Their Bikes for Kids Tour begins November 24 and will be visiting several cities including Palmerston North. Community members are being asked to nominate a child who they think deserves a bike. Variety chief executive Lorraine Taylor said every child should have the ability to experience the thrill of having their own bicycle. “Riding a bike is a child’s prerogative — something that provides them with a sense of independence,” she said. “However for many Kiwi kids certain circumstances mean they miss out.” She said they were encouraging

teachers, parents, caregivers, friends and grandparents to nominate a child aged between seven and nine to receive a new bike and helmet. To be part of the competition, a child also needs to come from a disadvantaged family or has recently overcome some type of hardship. They may also be considered if they are a role model to others or are “consistently making a difference”. The tour is part of the annual Variety Kids on the Move programme which allows for funding and equipment to improve children’s mobility. The charity works hard to improve the lives of about 260,000 New Zealand children living in poverty.

Ideal time to re-pot orchids October’s a good month to think about orchid care. Many orchids have finished flowering and are about to go into their major growth period. Cymbidium care: Cymbidiums are the most popular orchids. They’re the ones with the tall flower spikes and bulbous swellings at the base of the long strappy leaves. This is the best time of year to tidy them up and get them ready for the new growing season. Start by taking a good look at the orchid to see if the clump is crowded enough to need dividing. Sometimes this decision is easy: the bulbous bases are so crowded together they’re almost bursting out of the pot. Or there are a lot of dead bulbs in the pot. With either of these situations, it’s worth repotting. But don’t rush into it — a plant can stay in the same pot for a number of years. And, remember, after orchids have been divided, it can take two or three years for them to reach flowering stage again. How to re-pot a cymbidium orchid: ■ Remove the plant from the pot. Sometimes it’s even necessary to break the pot in order to free the orchid. ■ Take a knife or another strong tool and use it to lever between the bulbs (pictured). Separate the clump into at least two sections. ■ Remove most of the leafless, dead-looking or squashy bulbs. You can leave a single row of these back bulbs next to the leafy shoots. ■ Check the roots for damaged, rotted or tangled sections. Remove these. ■ Choose new pots. Yates Tuscan pots are ideal because they have plenty of drainage holes. Good drainage is

critically important for orchids. ■ Pack some orchid potting mix into the base of the pot. ■ Sit the orchid in the pot and fill around it with the mix. Make sure that each bulb is sitting above the mix. ■ Water well and sprinkle some pellets of Dynamic Lifter Organic Plant Food on top of the pot. ■ Begin feeding with Yates Orchid Food every two weeks. ■ After Christmas, to encourage flowering, use Yates Thrive Flower & Fruit Soluble Plant Food fortnightly. Caring for other orchids: Moth orchids (Phalaenopsis spp) are becoming increasingly popular. These can be kept indoors permanently in a well-lit position but will, once it’s reliably warm, appreciate a spell outdoors in a lightly shaded spot. These plants really appreciate humidity so keep them well watered in hot weather and mist over the leaves regularly. Moth orchids can produce new shoots and buds from the stem that flowered last year so only trim dead sections from flowering shoots. Moth orchids can be repotted into fine orchid bark every three years or so. Feed during the warmer months with Yates Orchid Food or Thrive Flower & Fruit. Watch for mealy bugs — a Yates Rose Gun Advanced will take care of most of the common pests and diseases, including mealy bug. Slipper orchids, so-named because their flowers resemble a dainty piece of lady’s footwear, will appreciate similar care. A break outdoors can be good for these plants too but because they’re naturally understorey dwellers, they can tolerate more shade.

Feeding time with creepy crawlies

TEAM EFFORT: New Zealand makes a break for goal.

PHOTOS: ALECIA ROUSSEAU

Black Sticks defeated The third round of the women’s hockey series saw United States beat the Black Sticks 2-1. Within the first minute, American player Paige Selenski scored for her team. The second game in Palmerston North is tonight from 6.30pm at the Endeavour Twin Turfs.

DETERMINED: Anita Punt makes a run for it.

Frogs, stick insects, weta and fish — we catch up with live exhibit keepers, Lena Olley and Karin Seivwright, to find out all about the creepy crawlies who reside here at Te Manawa. Lena and Karin are particularly partial to the odd invertebrate and have both completed Masters degrees in Conservation Biology, also having studied Zoology and Ecology. Lena’s Master’s focus was looking at the population genetics of the New Zealand falcon, specifically looking at whether we have more than one population in New Zealand. Future research will include studying further the ecology of the New Zealand falcon. Karin focused on the post-release survival and reproductive success of little blue penguins rehabilitated after the Rena oil spill in Tauranga. She assessed the effectiveness of the ‘oiled wildlife’ rehabilitation process. “I’m also scoping out a PhD project looking at the ecology and population trends of yellow-eyed penguins in the subAntarctic Islands,” she said. Lena and Karin are at Te Manawa every Saturday and Sunday at 3pm to feed the native fish where guests can join in, observe and ask questions of the keepers to learn lots of interesting facts about our wettest residents. Koaro, banded kokapu, shortfin kokopu and giant kokopu are among the species kept in the Te Awa exhibit, while a number of bullies recently arrived from Zealandia in Wellington. Te Manawa is also home to live cave weta, frogs and stick insects. Some people are surprised to learn cave weta are found not only in caves but under stones, loose bark or under rotting logs. “Weta have ridges on their abdomens and they rub their hind legs against them to make sound to communicate,” says Karin. Lena and Karin are passionate about the environment and conservation and are looking forward to showcasing their interests during Conservation Week from November 1 to 9. “Seeing as we both love our native fish, at the museum one of our biggest concerns

GDN231014temanawa

is the state of our freshwater in New Zealand,” Karin said. “The pollution and degradation of our waters from intensive dairying is putting a huge strain on our native fish species. “New Zealand now has the highest percentage of endangered freshwater fish in the world. We need to work with local councils and the Government to improve the protection of our waterways and in turn to protect the habitat of our very special native fish.” Lena and Karin will be offering guided tours around Te Awa and their invertebrate friends. Visitors during Conservation Week will also have the chance to go behind the scenes and check out the meal worms destined for the carnivorous cave weta. There’ll be rotting logs in the Te Manawa courtyard that kids and adults alike will enjoy fossicking through to find bugs and grubs to feed to the fish. Check out the website for dates and times of tours and other Conservation week activities. This weekend’s free activities: Native fish feeding 3pm Saturday and Sunday, Discovery Time with the weekend educators — Celebrating Spring! SaturdaySunday 10.30am-3pm; Spinners and Weavers 1-3pm and Netball Manawatu in the Atrium, and Camera Workshop five minute film screenings in Manawatu Journeys. At the Art Gallery: Sunday Concert series, 2.30pm; Kathryn McCool: The map is not the territory; Pasifika, Shigeyuki Kihara: Undressing the Pacific and Black River. Whare Taonga: House of Treasures ends October 27.

STAR PUPIL OF THE MONTH Our star student for October is Phoebe McGregor. She is in year 8 at Cornerstone, and attends our centre for maths and English tuition. She has blossomed this year into a student who is a confident learner and is able to take risks. Here is what Phoebe says: At the beginning of the year I didn’t even enjoy reading, but now I have a true passion for books. This year has really challenged me and at times I felt like giving up. I’m so glad I persevered. Thank you, Minke and Ann, for being my companions on this journey.

This retrospective event hosts some of the best environmental films shown at previous Reel Earth film festivals over the past nine years, while gaining momentum for their 10th Festival Season in June next year. The idea behind this tandem event is to both celebrate the symbiotic marriage of film and our ecosystem and raise the profile of the festival, in anticipation of their 10th anniversary. Diehard fans won’t be disappointed as new material will offer a taste of what’s in store next year. Festival director Dr Sandra Schalk says the message is hopeful and positive in that we can all do our bit for the environment,

rather than feel overwhelmed by the doom and gloom merchants. She invites you to view the “wonderful way in which film makers bring environmental issues closer to us”, adding that “if seven billion people can do one small thing to make it better, it does add up”. There are mid-morning sessions for the early bird, followed by lunchtime sessions for those who like sustainability with their sushi, all for a gold coin donation. Pop in after work or catch the last show when entry is $5. Check the website first as the programme is subject to change. Dr Schalk is grateful to the festival sponsors, PNCC and NZ Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Research Centre, for their continued support of Reel Earth. ■ For more information visit www.reelearth.org.nz.

Pratt Memorial fires up stockcar drivers By PETER FRANKLIN Stockcar drivers from around the North Island will line up on Saturday to compete for one of the most sought-after titles run at Robertson Holden International Speedway, the Robin Pratt Memorial Stockcar trophy. Robin Pratt passed away at the Palmerston North speedway on October 21, 2000, while competing in the second meeting of the season. A year following his death, Robin’s brother David donated a trophy to be contested each year in memory of his brother. The race attracts the best drivers from around New Zealand, all eager to claim the prize that honours a highlyrespected person and stockcar driver. Robertson Holden International Speedway track manager Bryan Pukowski said

LVN221014splpratt

TRISH and Robin Pratt at the beginning of the 1999-2000 season. Saturday night’s racing would be some of the most exciting fans could want. There will be a large number of local cars and many from other tracks.

There will be two qualifying heats to get the 36 starters in the three-race Robin Pratt Memorial. “It will be hard and fast, and

great entertainment for the fans,” he said. It is expected that each of the qualifying heats will have anywhere between 30 and 36 cars per race, with the first 18 going through to the starting lineup for the Robin Pratt Memorial. Tactics are going to play a big part in the race, with track conditions and the grid draw coming into the equation however, stockcar racing being what it is, even the best laid plans can go astray. Mr Pukowski said the track would be in the best possible condition for the meeting and he was looking forward to some of the best stockcar action. Peter Rees has won more Robin Pratt Memorial races than any other driver and will be out to add another win to his tally. Rees, and his sons Asher and Ethan, will be in their new Holden-powered tanks,

Shannon’s Ron Tye and Palmerston North-based Gavin Taniwha, also racing tanks, will be well in the mix, as will NZ1 Jayden Ward and NZ2 Chev Taniwha. Palmerston North has 90 stockcars registered and, with a good number of visiting cars expected, it could be a nightmare for the track officials but a fantastic night for fans. Racing starts at 7pm.

• Prepare your car - have it serviced and check that you’re prepared for emergencies with a blanket, torch and first aid kit.

Alcohol affects your driving skills, moods and behaviour. Once it’s been consumed the effects cannot be reversed. The only thing that will sober you up is time. Getting back to zero (sobering up), takes a long time. No amount of coffee, food, physical activity or sleep will speed up the process.

• Prepare yourself - be rested before a long drive, plan the trip so you share the driving and take regular breaks to avoid fatigue. • If you plan to have a drink plan not to drive. • If you have children in the car ensure they are in the appropriate child restraint. • If you’re travelling with pets make sure they are restrained - for everybody’s safety.

You don’t have to be drunk to be affected by alcohol. You might feel normal but no one drives as well after drinking alcohol. Novice drivers with any level of alcohol in their blood are at a much higher risk of crashing. This is why learner and provisional licence holders are restricted to a zero alcohol limit.

WHAT’S IN THE STARS FOR YOU NEXT WEEK? ARIES

There is a lot of change in the air this week and a sense that on a number of fronts, after a long, hard haul things are finally coming together.

TAURUS

Palmers brings local gardening content back to TV screens this spring.

Not since the much-loved ‘Maggie’s Garden Show’ have Kiwis had a gardening-focused television show to really get their teeth - and boots - into, so Palmers are excited to bring the next generation of gardening shows to our screens with ‘Get Growing’, Choice TV Friday nights at 7.30pm. A garden and lifestyle show covering everything about creating beautiful garden spaces, it is an insider’s look into Kiwi gardens as they come alive with a colourful mix of friendly encouragement, timely advice, innovative ideas and fresh inspiration that’s right on season. The show features special guests as well as expert advice from several key hosts: modern gardening whiz Lynda Hallinan, NZ Gardener editor Jo McCarroll, garden designer and DIY maestro Justin Newcombe, as well as a home and garden trends segment with respected journalist and TV face Carly Flynn.

The Big Weekend

Palmers are very proud to be playing a key role in bringing the true blue Kiwi gardening show concept back to TV watchers the length and breadth of the nation, inspiring gardeners both experienced and new in the process.

SALE

In addition, Palmers has also played an active role in helping another great local TV series, ‘Cook the Books’ come to life. Eight half-hour episodes also showing on Choice TV, it is hosted by broadcaster, foodie and cookbook fan Carly Flynn, and is a chance to meet New Zealand’s own celebrity chefs, writers and culinary stars as well as delve into a selection of the most fresh and popular cookbook releases on the market. Filmed at Auckland’s leading cookbook specialist store, the small-but-perfectly-formed Cook the Books in suburban Grey Lynn, it also features a true chef’s garden designed and planted by a team of experts from Palmers. Once again, the iconic New Zealand gardening brand is proud to be playing a key role in raising the profile of one of the country’s most popular pastimes by helping bring it to our screens in its full colour, seasonal glory. Cook the Books starts Thursday October 30th at 8.30pm.
