Labour leadership candidate visits city

INSIDE

this week

By DALE WICKEN Wellington Central MP Grant Robertson visited Palmerston North last week as part of his campaign to become the new leader of the Labour party, visiting one of Palmerston North’s most successful businesses while he was in town — Ezibuy. Robertson met with supervisor Carol Thurston and engineering, printing and manufacturing union organiser Ruth Sprotson to hear about Ezibuy’s online successes. Ms Sprotson described the career advancement within the company and how some of the supervisors were once call centre workers themselves. Mr Robertson said this was evidence of the role of unions in a productive workplace. “This is a fantastic example of where a union has worked alongside a business to develop a great work culture and allows employees to work their way up through an organisation.” Robertson announced his standing for the leadership role at a campaign launch on October 19. He also announced his running mate as popular Auckland Central MP Jacinda Ardern. Mr Robertson says, in wake of the election result, Labour needs to reconnect with New Zealanders. “We must be consistent and inspire in New Zealanders the confidence that we are on their

This needs a new generation of leadership. We need to do things differently, to rethink the issues we focus on, the way we talk about them, and how Labour is viewed.” As leader, he would focus on Labour becoming more community involved all year round, not just when they were

trying to get votes. “We will know that this approach has succeeded when Labour is seen as a relevant and respected part of our community every day, not just at election time.” Local Labour MP Iain LeesGalloway was one of two MPs who nominated Mr Robertson’s rival, former union boss Andrew Little, to succeed David Cunliffe

for the leadership role. The ‘We want Grant’ Facebook page has 1,255 likes and he’s has had some wellknown people pledge their support of his campaign, including former deputy Prime Minister Michael Cullen and former Prime Minister Sir Geoffrey Palmer. The leadership result will be announced on November 18.

Crash claims life of young father-to-be By ALECIA ROUSSEAU Tributes are continuing to flow for a young father-to-be who died in a fatal car accident in Feilding on Wednesday night of last week. Marshall Daldry, 18, was driving a Honda Prelude along South Street at about 10.45pm when it crashed through a fence and into a tree. He was dead when emergency services arrived at the scene. A police spokesperson said an 18-year-old female passenger was taken to hospital in a stable condition while other passengers were treated at the scene. Dozens of posts have appeared on Daldry’s Facebook page describing him as a good guy who was taken too soon. Tarryn Hill wrote, “You have done so much to better yourself to become a father GDN301014marshall and I’m so honoured to have known you, fly high as hell.” TRAGEDY: Marshall Daldry was killed last week. Benefits of home-based childcare

GDN301014barnardos

Kia Ora. My name is Kylie Wakelin and I’m a childcare consultant for Barnardos Kidstart Childcare. I was born and raised in Central Hawke’s Bay in the small farming community of Wallingford. Three years ago my family settled in Manawatu. My previous work experience includes working in community mental health promotion, suicide prevention research and community development roles. Before becoming a childcare consultant, I was a home-based educator. I have three gorgeous, fun children — Maike, 17, Aimee, four, and Ash, two, and being a home-based educator allowed me to stay at home raising them while earning an income. A benefit to home-based care has been the strong, lasting bonds with the children in my care and their families. We still play together today. My own children learned to share and gained a sense of community while having adventures that enriched them as individuals. I have also used home-based care for my children and we still keep in touch with our educator who’ll always have a special place in our family. It’s a unique relationship and for many parents one of the most appealing aspects of the homebased childcare.

The excellent child to educator ratio gives children the opportunity to form strong connections and get plenty of one-on-one attention — both important factors in fostering their development. In my role I’ve formed relationships with all

of our fun and experienced local educators and I can guide parents with gentle support and lots of information to help them on their journey meeting and selecting an educator. I absolutely love my job.

New owner for Kip McGrath in Palmerston North Palmerston North Kip McGrath Education Centre has been bought by Minke Franz, who is delighted to have such a wonderful opportunity to support local students and help them achieve well academically. Minke has 20 years' teaching experience across a range of ages and ability levels. She has taught for long periods at both Freyberg High School and St Peter's College, where she has served as both teacher and manager. She’s a well-qualified English and literacy teacher with a passion for student success, no matter what level they're at. The local Kip McGrath franchise has been a successful business for 20 years and is well-trusted by the community. It offers specialised, individual tuition for primary and high school students in core learning

areas (numeracy, literacy, English, maths and sciences). While maintaining the excellent standards already set by staff, Minke is also going to introduce ESOL classes, extension opportunities for gifted students and NCEA exam revision classes. Kip McGrath offers services to a range of students: remedial, gifted, those who are

bored or disillusioned with school, homeschooled students, those who need advice on exam techniques, and students whose home language is not English. Tutors are all fully qualified teachers with specialised knowledge and a wealth of experience. Kip McGrath supports students with 21st century learning opportunities: educational

software has been newly developed to align with the New Zealand Curriculum and the expectations and experiences of the modern student. PATH OF LIFE S tepping O ut ... Inside Te Manawa — the tip of the iceberg We caught up with Collection and Knowledge asset manager Jeff Fox in Te Manawa’s Caravan to find out more about what he does. Jeff began his career as a boy pressing, drying and mounting flowers in Australia, a job he says he found cathartic and socially fulfilling, learning as he went from his colleagues and fellow volunteers. In 1989 he entered the museum scene, serving 25 years at Te Papa before joining Te Manawa two years ago. As someone who is ultimately passionate about Te Manawa’s extensive collection, Jeff’s role sees him totally immersed in weird and wonderful objects, important art and potential purchases all with the end goal of having the collection accessible physically and virtually. “I’m a storyteller and I relish a challenge — there are a lot of really good

His goal is in working towards building a data bank of images and oral histories relating to “unique, different, crazy people in the Manawatu”. Jeff is working to encourage the people of the Manawatu to take ownership of and have pride in the collection. “We have some cool objects, for example ski poles possibly used by Ernest Shakleton. I enjoy the mystery of the ‘could be’ and the ‘might be’. Of the collection, I have only seen the

GDN301014temanawa

tip of the iceberg”. We asked Jeff why people should feel passion for, and ultimately visit Te Manawa. His answer was “simply because Te Manawa represents the heart of the community—past, present and future”. You can take a Back-of-House collection tour with collection manager, Cindy Lilburn, during Local History Week from November 3-9. See the website for dates and times and book with reception. Spaces are limited.

Petanque — not just for the oldies Manawatu Petanque Club invites you to help celebrate their National counterparts 21st birthday. Sunday November 21 will see them host a public afternoon full of balls, fun and spot prizes. The club, which has experienced significant growth in the past five years, is excited about opening their doors to the

younger generation. Club captain Elva Cooper says too many people think Petanque is an oldies sport but it can include the whole family. “We are a really friendly club and anyone is welcome . . . you have a lot of fun and build some great friendships. We often go for coffees after a meet.”

The Green Prescription scheme is also involved with the club, often bringing people down to learn. “It’s fantastic for your health; its gentle exercise and it’s made a world of difference for myself.”

She says the game is easy to learn but difficult to master. “With lots of practice you can do very well and take part in competitions.” The club meets twice a week at 74 North Street behind the

bowling club. Their open day will be held here from 1.30pm. Entry is free and there are spot prizes. ■ For more information please contact Claudia Thompson on (06) 358-4919.

PATH OF LIFE MARRIAGE

Weddings & Committment

Top tips for smooth wedding day success 1. Don’t wear heels for your rehearsal, unless you’re a frequent heel wearer. I’m not a big heel wearer because I’m tall enough sans shoes. But I wore three-inch wedges for our wedding rehearsal and rehearsal dinner. Huge mistake. I was struggling to walk in my two-inch heels three hours into my wedding day. If you do wear heels for your rehearsal, pop on some flats for the rest of the evening, especially if your feet aren’t used to being in heels. Also, bring a separate pair of comfortable shoes to wear on your wedding day, just in case. I bought some circa-1998 platform flip flops (so my dress wouldn’t drag on the floor and so I wouldn’t trip on it) to wear on the dance floor at our reception. 2. Baby wipes are your best friend. We did First Look photos outside before our ceremony, which meant the bottom of my dress was dirty even though I picked it up when I walked around. When my bridal party and I got to our ceremony venue, my maid of honour busted out some baby wipes and went to town cleaning the hem of my dress. The baby wipes were magical, taking all the dirt off my dress. When I walked down the aisle no one could tell how dirty it had been 30 minutes earlier. The baby wipes also came in handy when our caterers spilled barbecue sauce on a food station tablecloth and flipped it over instead of removing it, so that when I went to get my food I got barbecue sauce all over the front of my wedding dress. Thank goodness for those baby wipes — they got the sauce off in no time. Note: my dress was satin. Make sure you can use baby wipes on your dress material. 3. Take your dress off to use the toilet. Yes. When I needed to go to the bathroom I took my maid of honour with me. She unzipped my dress, I stepped out of the

dress, she held the dress up like I was still in it, I did my business, washed my hands, jumped back into the dress, she zipped me up and we were on our way. So much easier than having 3-5 bridesmaids holding up your dress while you pee. This tip works best if you have a dress you can easily get in and out of. If all else fails pull a Bethenny Frankel and pee in a trash can. I won’t judge you. 4. Hair and make-up trials are a must. I believe in getting your makeup and hair professionally done for your wedding day. When else will you get the chance to have your make-up professionally airbrushed? Splurge a little. Things are stressful enough without doing your own. I also strongly believe in having at least one make-up and hair trial. This is so important. Take photo

examples to show how you want your hair and make-up to look. When you get home from your trials, have someone take photos of you from every angle. I decided I didn’t want my hair pinned up to the side based on how I looked in photos I took after my hair trial. 5. Give yourself more than enough time on your wedding day. Things will run behind schedule. I was an hour late getting to my First Look because my hair took longer than expected, and I was a frazzled mess (I hate being late). In my opinion, the bride should be the first to get her hair or make-up done. If she’s getting her hair done someone else can be getting their makeup done, but the bride is the number one priority. If you think it’ll take you three hours to get ready, plan for it to take

4-5 hours. Trust me. If you’re ahead of schedule your photographer can get more bridal shots of you or photos of you and your bridesmaids in your bridal suite. It’s always best to be ahead of schedule rather than behind. If you are running late, don’t freak out too much — they can’t start without you. 6. Have a wedding day survival kit. My maid of honour had one and so did my day of wedding co-ordinator. Google “wedding day survival kit”. Some things to have in your kit: water, deodorant, mints, aspirin/ ibuprofen, antacid, lip gloss/ lipstick, dental floss, sewing kit, first aid kit, touch-up powder, bobby pins, mirror, band-aids, baby wipes, white chalk, stain remover, safety pins, smelling salts, hand sanitiser, scissors, cotton buds

and a lint roller. 7. Hold your bouquet low. For the love, hold your bouquet low. I cringe when I see brides holding their bouquets up by their faces. It may feel weird to hold it low, but trust me, it looks much better. Before walking down the aisle with my dad and stepdad, I held my bouquet where I wanted it and told them to hook my arms. Do the same with whoever walks you down the aisle. 8. Walk slowly down the aisle. It’s not the 50m dash. You only get one chance (hopefully) to walk down the aisle. Savour it. I told my dad and step-dad to follow my lead. Do the same with the person or people who walk you down the aisle. Don’t let them speed you up. Walk slowly. Smile. Lock eyes with your groom. And carry that bouquet low, sister. This goes for bridesmaids, too. 9. Have your maid of honour practice bustling your dress before the wedding day. Having your maid of honour (or whoever will be bustling your dress) practice bustling your dress before your big day will save time. If possible, have her accompany you to your last fitting so your seamstress can show her how to do it. Note: I had a one-point bustle and it held strong all night, never breaking. I credit my seamstress’ use of Ric-Rac ribbon. 10. Have a receiving line. I know some people hate receiving lines. I love them. We had our receiving line as guests came from cocktail hour to pick up their escort cards and head into the reception hall. I’m a receiving line fan because I was able to see and greet everyone who came to our wedding. Brad and I covered all 120 of our wedding guests in 15-20 minutes. It went quickly because people wanted to sit down and eat. Plus, I think having a line of people behind you puts the pressure on to keep it short and sweet.

Need housing advice? The Housing Advice Centre is a not-forprofit, community organisation based in Community House and our mission is to see everyone in our area in appropriate accommodation that is affordable and suits their needs. The Housing Advice Centre does this by providing housing advice. Ways we can help include: ■ Free listing service — we have a list available from our office or on our website which is updated twice weekly and only includes private accommodation, not usually rental agencies. ■ Help for tenants and landlords which includes flatmates. We have all the housing forms e.g. residential tenancy agreements or bond forms you may require. ■ Advice about what social and emergency housing providers there are in Palmerston North.

■ Information — written and verbal including our own Renting and Other Accommodation options booklet. This has lots of relevant information about Palmerston North which we have put together. ■ We do research on what’s happening in the housing scene in Palmerston North and inform local and national Government. ■ We publicise housing issues and make submissions on housing and housing related issues. ■ We work with landlords, property managers, Government departments and other agencies. ■ We offer support for people through the Tenancy Tribunal process. ■ We provide seminars on housing e.g. tenancy agreements and the legal requirements.

The Housing Advice Centre is a community agency that has been providing advice to landlords, tenants and others with housing related concerns or enquiries in the Palmerston North area for 25 years. We are a free service and have private rental listings updated twice weekly. If you have a problem, question, or are just curious about a rental housing or accommodation matters, then we can help you. We also offer seminars to any community groups on housing matters. Our hours are Monday-Thursday 10 to 3p.m, Fridays 10 to 2p.m, in community House, 77 King Street.

Health For Life

Tips for a better you Modern women play multiple roles in their life; both professional and personal. Hence it’s significant to take proper care of physical fitness. Most women fail to look after their health amidst their busy schedule. But the fact is it’s women who require more nutrition when compared to men. The kind of issues affecting women’s health are greatly different from those of men, as the health cycle follows a more complicated path. Women require more care, especially during times of pregnancy and lactation. It’s vital to create some healthy changes to your lifestyle in order to lead a proper and healthful life. ■ Establish an exercise routine:

Vasectomies at

Staying active will help you develop a strong body that appears and feels good as you age. It may lower your risk for disease, reduce stress and protect your bones and joints. Therefore it’s important to take part in physical activities that aren’t only challenging but also fun and motivating. Keep things interesting by mixing it up; whether it’s a dance class or a kayaking trip, don’t be afraid to test something new. ■ Maintain healthy eating habits: Stop worrying about your weight and start thinking about your health. Eating mostly whole foods, including plenty of vegetables, fruits and whole grains, is the key to feeling and looking your very best. Start by adding an additional serving of fruits and vegetables to every meal. Lower your possibility of osteoporosis later by consuming more calcium now. Calcium is available in dairy products including milk, yoghurt and cheese and in other foods, such as leafy green vegetables like spinach and kale, broccoli and tofu. Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium so it’s vital you take a

supplement, eat foods fortified with vitamin D or go for a walk outdoors in the sunshine. ■ Get a good night’s sleep: Not receiving enough sleep can hinder your memory and ability to reason while focusing, make you more susceptible to injury, increase levels of stress and reduce your body’s ability to fight infection or heal. For those who have trouble getting a good night’s rest, try sleeping and waking up at the same time every day or taking a hot shower before bed. ■ Manage stress: It’s easy to get overwhelmed with balancing a new job, friends and anything else happening in your life. Breathe; slow, deep, diaphragmatic breaths can trigger a relaxation response inside your whole body.

of those with advanced dementia. “The sparkle in the eyes is an instant, visible measure of a strong and healthy spirit,” explains Spark of Life founder Jane Verity (pictured). Verity was in Palmerston North recently to train Enliven staff from around the North Island, including staff from Brightwater Home and Willard Home in Palmerston North and Coombrae Home in Feilding, and meet with families of people experiencing the dementia journey. “Dementia isn’t a disease. It’s an umbrella term that describes a group of symptoms,” says Jane. “Spark of Life began as a therapeutic club programme specifically for people with advanced dementia. The results showed people with dementia could improve which created the foundation for the programme which is offered today.” The programme has now developed to support staff and families to interact in a way that keeps people with dementia connected with the world around them. Enliven general manager Nicola Turner says every day staff see the difference implementing the Spark of Life can make. “We’ve seen improvements in social interactions, memory and language — it’s truly very powerful.” “The training provides practical

solutions to everyday challenges which can be used easily by staff and family members through making small changes to their language and their approach.” ■ For more information about Enliven’s rest home, hospital and dementia care services call 0800 36 54 83 (that’s 0800 ENLIVEN).

Crouch,

Touch, Paws! Keep your pet safe during fireworks Rebekah Willink, Totally Vets

Rockets and crackers are great fun for us, but even the tiniest of pops can upset some pets. These noises sometimes stress pets to the point where they may become disoriented or get hurt in their panic to get away. A frightened animal may become lost, get hit by a car, or even be injured directly from the fireworks themselves. The following tips will help pet owners minimise pet panic during this noisy time:

• Take your dog out for a long walk late afternoon. Feed all pets mid to late afternoon. Tired pets with full tummies are more likely to be sleepier.

A great cover up & a timely reminder

• If you are leaving your dog at home while you watch the display, make sure your pet is safely tucked away in a kennel or in a safe and secure room in the house, with some favourite toys. • Keep your cat inside during this time. Lock the cat flap and make sure there is a litter tray inside. • Draw the curtains to help keep the noise down and the lights out. Provide a cosy bed with a new toy and/or chew. Put the TV or some music on. These will provide a distraction. • If your cat gets very anxious, put him/her in a cat cage with a blanket or towel over the top. Do the same with any caged animals like rabbits or guinea pigs.

• If your vet has prescribed any sedative drugs for the evening, ensure they are given at the time advised, for maximum effectiveness. • Lock all exits! In case your pet does run away, ensure he/she is either wearing a collar with identification, or is microchipped. • Don’t punish your pet if he or she is scared. Punishment will make him/her more anxious and confirms that there is something to be frightened of. • A frightened animal needs clear and calm support from its owner – if you show your pet there is nothing to be frightened of it will often help them to feel better. It is OK to pat and comfort your pet if they are frightened, but you should do so in a calm, soothing and non-stressful way. • Try to avoid late evening walks for at least a week prior to and after the event – there are often isolated fireworks during this time. Remember that firework components, whether exploded or unexploded, are toxic. If you think your pet may need sedating during fireworks or any other noisy event, please ring Totally Vets Feilding for advice. Your pet may need to see a vet first before a sedative can be prescribed.
