Rebuilt wharf will boost region AN $85 million extension at the Lyttelton Port Company opened yesterday, marking another project finished in the rapidly accelerating rebuild. The Cashin Quay 2 Wharf was opened by Deputy Prime Minister Bill English, who said the redevelopment of the port will play a significant role in the economic growth of the South Island. “The TPPA opens New Zealand up to 800 million potential customers and covers 36 per cent of global GDP. The expansion of the Lyttelton Port means the business is well placed to take advantage of this trade deal.” The wharf was destroyed in the February 2011 earthquake. Peaceful Chch, angry Auckland

Trade deal protests across NZ

CHRISTCHURCH’S opposition to the Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement yesterday was in stark contrast to Auckland’s aggressive protests. Around 100 people turned up to the city council debating chamber yesterday, waving banners and signs in a peaceful protest. But while the deal was being signed by 13 trade ministers in Auckland, thousands of protesters hit Auckland’s streets and blocking main motorway on-ramps and exits in the central city. The human barricades were forcibly removed by police.

There was a rousing haka from a group of anti-TPPA activists making their way through the CBD, and many waved banners or flags as they chanted. The TPPA, which has been called “the biggest trade deal in a generation,” is a free trade agreement involving 12 countries connected by the Pacific Ocean. It is designed to free up trade and investment between the countries, but protesters are

concerned it could hurt New Zealand’s sovereignty. The deal is generally supposed to boost exports into powerful countries, but it also opens up the possibility of the Government being sued by overseas corporations. While it was signed yesterday, it won’t affect trade until all the concerned countries have voted or passed it into law. It could take up to two years to come into play.

Brownlee said at the opening that its rapid reclamation and construction is proof great things can come from disasters. “The earthquakes saw the port lose 30 per cent of its operational space and the need to repair 14ha of container terminal, so acting quickly and pragmatically was necessary to help Lyttelton meet the needs of the region’s growing economy.” The 10ha reclamation used more than a million tonnes of rubble from central Christchurch. In the last year, the port serviced 406 container ships from 94 international ports in 39 countries. The redevelopment doubles the port’s container capacity. • Turn to page 3

Quake lab to protect heritage By Gabrielle Stuart A HUGE, $8.75m earthquake testing lab being built at Canterbury University has the potential to save heritage buildings across the country. The lab is fitted with 9.2m high “strongwalls” made of 1.6m thick reinforced concrete, which allows full-sized buildings or structures to be built inside. They can then be shaken at the speed and intensity of different kinds of earthquakes, to see how they hold up. Structural Engineering Associate Professor Greg MacRae said many heritage buildings were being labelled earthquake-prone and demolished, because the owners didn’t want to take the risk they could collapse. But he said it was very hard to accurately judge how vulnerable heritage buildings were using the current systems. “Someone’s got to make a decision about whether or not to pull it down, when the methods we have been using on older structures are actually very crude.” Using the new earthquake lab, parts of the building could be brought in to be tested or the structure could be recreated on site, he said. The lab also had big implications for the rebuild, as it could be used to test anything from soil structure to bridges, he said. “What we learnt from the recent Canterbury earthquakes is that there are still many things we do not understand about structural performance. Some things behaved considerably worse than we expected, while others behaved better.” He said similar labs were being used overseas, but the Canterbury lab would be the biggest in New Zealand. The university already has a lab which uses similar techniques, but it is much smaller. He said tests there could only be done on parts of a building or on a scaled-down model. “When you’re working on a smaller scale, materials like the concrete become an issue, because there are things like the aggregate

CONSTRUCTION: Full sized buildings can be built and tested in a new earthquake lab at Canterbury University, which feature “strongwalls” which are 9.2m high and 1.6m thick.

HISTORY: Heritage buildings around the country, like the Anderson Park Art Gallery in Invercargill, have been labelled quake-prone and closed since the Canterbury earthquakes. The Canterbury lab could be a more reliable way to test if they are safe.

Greg MacRae size which you can’t scale down. The results you get testing small things are different to the results testing large things.” The larger lab would give much more accurate results, and would also mean things could be tested at a more realistic speed, he said. He said more than a years worth of projects were already booked to start in the lab once it opened, and it was likely to attract more from around the country and the world.

“Since the earthquakes we’ve been inundated by people from overseas wanting to do their research here, so if we bring in any more that may actually become a problem,” he said. He said there was potential to expand the lab in the future. Project manager Robert Steel, of Dominion Constructors, is himself a former Canterbury University engineering student, and said that made seeing the project come

With just a 2mm tolerance, he said it was tense work pulling it together, but it was progressing well. The construction work is scheduled to finish in April, and it will then be opened in a public ceremony.

Engineer to face investigation By Tom Doudney A GEOTECHNICAL engineer used by Southern Response is to be investigated over allegations which include ignoring the recommendations of another engineer. It is also claimed the engineer undertook engineering activities not within his competence and not disclosing a conflict of interest. An initial complaint against him was dismissed by the Institute of Professional Engineers of New Zealand on May 12. However, the complainants, Cameron and Wendy Preston, made an appeal to the Chartered Professional Engineering Council which overturned the decision and ordered IPENZ to form an investigation committee. Mr Preston has been an outspoken critic Cam Preston of the insurance industry, and in particular Southern Response, since the February 2011 earthquake. The engineer in question was contracted by Southern Response to produce a report on how to address damage to the foundations of the Prestons’ Richmond home. The Prestons independently commissioned their own structural engineering report from Engineering Design Consultants which concluded that rebuilding of the foundations was required. Although aware of the EDC report, the engineer’s own report recommended repairing rather than rebuilding the foundations. After a call from Mr Preston and consulting with Southern Response’s agent Arrow International, the engineer released an altered version of the first report which detailed rebuild options.

However, Southern Response has used the engineer’s first report to assert that a repair of the Prestons’ foundations is viable and therefore a rebuild is not required. The Prestons and Southern Response have since been unable to come to an agreement. In its initial decision, IPENZ said the Prestons’ complaint had not been made in good faith, stating that “it is certainly clear that the complaint stems from the Prestons’ dissatisfaction with the proposals of their insurer.” However, CPEC found that questions remained to be answered over the extent to which the engineer had taken account of the EDC recommendations, the relationship between his two reports and whether he had any duty of care to the Prestons. A spokeswoman for IPENZ

said the organisation would not comment so as not to compromise the outcome for any of the parties involved. When contacted by The Star, the engineer declined to comment on the matter. However, in his initial IPENZ hearing, he stated that he had first received instructions from Arrow to produce a report for a repair scenario. “When it was pointed out, and [Arrow International] said ‘yep, we gave you the wrong instructions, we want you to reissue the report as a rebuild’, we went back. We revised and updated and issued a second report with basically rebuild recommendations,” the engineer said. He said he had initially completed a report for a repair because his employer, Southern Response, had asked him to do so, and his care of duty was to Southern Response, not the Prestons. The Prestons believed the engineer’s second report should be seen as replacing the first report but the engineer said the two reports were stand-alone and both could be used to inform Southern Response’s decisions. Mr Preston said the engineer had a duty to provide “independent” advice on what the most appropriate option was for their home – repair or rebuild – rather than producing a report based on a repair scenario simply because that was what Southern Response had requested. He was concerned that other Southern Response clients could be in a similar position, without knowing it. A spokeswoman for Southern Response said it would not comment on the matter while the complaint was under investigation. A hearing date is yet to be confirmed and the engineer has until February 26 to decide if he wants to make his own appeal.

New wharf to boost region • From page 1 On the same day as the opening, trade ministers from around the world signed the Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement, which will likely see increasing volumes running through the port. The redevelopment highlights the benefits of free trade agreements like the TPPA, Mr English said. “These agreements open up new markets to our exporters – increasing our national income and creat-

ing more jobs for New Zealanders . . . the port is building on its connections with international hubs that link to ports all over the world.” Imports and exports coming through the port company account for 56 per cent of the total volume coming through the South Island, Mr English said: “This helps cement the Canterbury region as a key driver of New Zealand’s economic prosperity.” • Central city on the rise, p9

Property sales, prices up HOUSE SALES are up and so are prices – that’s the news from Christchurch’s buoyant property market. Harcourts’ Market Watch, released yesterday, shows that in spite of a dip in listings for January, the market is doing well. In January, 1852 Christchurch properties were sold, at an average price of $439,971. It’s a good result as January is historically a slower month for the property market, Harcourts chief executive Chris Kennedy said. “This is particularly so for Harcourts, which focuses on driving sales through auctions.” Auctions generally have a threeweek lead-up period, which most sellers avoid over the Christmas break. Mr Kennedy added that the stock level over the last year has remained consistent. “This consistency, coupled with

Anger at decision to close bus lounge toilet By Gabrielle Stuart

A DECISION yesterday to lock a toilet in the Riccarton north bus lounge has outraged an advocate for people with disabilities. He is calling on city councillors to get in wheelchairs and try to navigate to the nearest toilet. A city council committee voted yesterday to close the only toilet in the lounge because it was quoted $92,000 to refurbish it and make it wheelchair accessible. That would mean people would have to cross the road to use toilets at the lounge on the other side. But Disabled Persons Assembly president Philip Haythornthwaite

said the city councillors who voted for the plan should have to sit in a wheelchair and try to cross the road themselves. “They’d find out what the problems are with curbs and buses blocking the crossings. Actually crossing that distance in practice is totally different to talking about it in theory.” Cr David East was the only councillor on the committee who voted against the decision. The committee decision will need to be put to the city council for approval before it is finalised. Mr Haythornthwaite said he planned to raise the issues with the Human Rights Commission

if the city council supported the plan. He also questioned the quoted cost of installing an accessible toilet. He said $10,000 was the amount available in grants for people who needed to convert a bathroom in their home to make it wheelchair accessible. The city council quote included more than $11,000 for plumbing, $14,000 for shifting walls and the door and $13,000 for the new floor. The new lounge is expected to open in late March, but renovating the toilet would be likely to delay the opening by at least a month.

Auckland builder-turned-developer Andrew Fonagy has taken over the site at 818 Colombo St, and launched the new project. PLANS FOR a $7m upgrade to the Cranford Basin floodwater network passed one hurdle yesterday, but still need to be put to the city council for approval. The plan includes upgrades to embankments, drains, floodwater storage areas and gates and systems in the network around Flockton and Dudley Creek. Many residents there have had their homes and cars destroyed by floodwater, and the plans are expected to protect the area

against flooding in the future. A city council committee yesterday approved the plans for the $7m upgrade, but cut an extra $2.5m in embankments and flow control systems. Committee deputy chairwoman Pauline Cotter said the extra could be added relatively easily in the future if it was needed. She said the plan could also

improve water quality in the area, as it would give the city council more control over how much water was released into the river.

Commuter rail plan receives support

WORK ON the Addington stage of a cycleway which will run from the central city to Little River is expected to kick off this year. The project was given the green light yesterday at a meeting of a city council committee. It will include new cycleways from Moorhouse Ave through Church Square to Barrington St, new crossings over Wrights and Lincoln Rds where they intersect with the Southern Motorway, and improvements to the cycleway through Marylands Reserve. More than 120 people made submissions on the plan, and committee chairman Phil Clearwater said community involvement was important in developing the plan. “Local people have helped shape

lematic,” he said. He said a joint committee could solve many of those problems. Committee deputy chairwoman Pauline Cotter (left) said rail networks were likely to be something the committee would look at. But she said it was still too early to say when that might happen or if a committee could fast-track the work. She believed it could be a much more efficient than the current system, but the details of how it might operate still had to be worked through. Currently ECan controls the bus routes, while the city council controls bus stops. That means resolving problems or making changes to routes has

been a complicated process and has caused delays. In late 2014, the Canterbury Mayoral Forum wrote a letter to Minister of Transport Simon Bridges asking him to review the way the transport system was managed, because the councils were not working well together. “This is seriously impacting upon the region’s ability to deliver a fully functional and effective public transport service which is considered integral to the recovery and rebuild of a vibrant Greater Christchurch,” they wrote. If the city council agrees to the plan, the new committee is expected to be set up by May this year.

Staff developed three options for people to consider and based on feedback we will be banning the left-turn from Brougham St into Collins St.” He said it was an important part of the city council’s $156m Major Cycle Routes network. “It will provide a convenient option for people living in the growth areas of the city’s south-west wanting to ride their bicycles to Addington or the central city via the new Hagley Park shared path.” The new cycleway is expected to open next year.

PLANS FOR commuter rail could be back on the table if a joint city council and Environment Canterbury committee is approved. The joint committee has been proposed because of tension between the councils, which has caused delays and problems with bus routes and stops. A city council committee yesterday supported the plan which has already been agreed to by ECan, but it needs to be agreed to by the whole city council before it goes ahead. In a report to the councils, consultant firm McGredy Winder & Co director Peter Winder said one of the key priorities across the councils was developing the public transport system so it could support future investment in rail or light rail. But he said the current problems made focusing on those priorities difficult. “Current planning and delivery arrangements for public transport are spread between multiple agencies and this makes integrated investment decision and implementation on an effective public transport network prob-

THE QUAKE Outcasts group is heading back to court, more than five years after the earthquakes sequence began. The group of uninsured and commercial red-zoners took the Government all the way to the Supreme Court to challenge their offer of 50 per cent of their property’s rateable value. After the court found in the group’s favour, the Government last year raised their offer to 100 per cent of the RV, but of the land value only, not the building’s value. Lawyer for Quake Outcasts, Grant Cameron, says that is still discriminatory and the group this afternoon filed new proceedings in the High Court at Christchurch against the Minister for Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Gerry

Brownlee and the chief executive of the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority. “Given that the Supreme Court expressly noted the pitiful plight of the many residents still trapped in red zones, or otherwise being unable to properly recover from the earthquakes, it is very concerning that further legal proceedings are required to correct this injustice,” Mr Cameron said. Labour’s Canterbury earthquakes spokeswoman Megan Woods urged the Government to “pay all red zone property owners a fair rate for the property it has acquired from them”. “The court was clear in its ruling and the Government’s offer to only settle on land is a contemptuous disregard for a decision of the Supreme Court,” she said.

A LOOK INSIDE: CHANGING FACE OF CBD

Rebuild progress accelerates Builders are going flattack and the city is humming – this year is set to be a big one for the rebuild. Emma-Jane McLennan has a look at what’s happening in the CBD AFTER YEARS of hard work the city’s rebuild is finally shifting up a gear, going full-steam ahead on new developments. The city is reaching the peak of rebuild activity, Canterbury Development Corporation chief executive Tom Hooper (left) said. “We are expecting high levels of activity in the rebuild to continue at that peak for several years, so I am expecting construction and new building and shop openings to continue at the current pace.” The building Mr Hooper is referring to is a multi-billion dollar mix of private developments and CERA-led anchor projects which are finally in the design, consent and building stages. The city’s blueprint, set out in 2012, is becoming a reality. In the retail precinct alone, at least six major developments are progressing this year – the result of a “significant” amount of behindthe-scenes work by the Crown and private sector, Christchurch Central Development Unit director Baden Ewart (left) said. “It’s important to remember that the earthquakes didn’t really stop until the end of 2011 . . . during and after that time, over 1100 buildings in the central city had to be fully or partially demolished before it was safe for central city development to take shape.” While many major anchor projects have been delayed, some are nearing completion. The Justice and Emergency Services precinct

is likely to be in use by mid next year, and the earthquake memorial on the Avon River will be finished by February 22 next year. Some larger projects such as the Metro Sports Facility and Convention Centre are still a long way off. Re:Start Mall Developments on the Ballantynes end are beginning soon, with tenders called this month for Denis Sunderland’s building (pictured). The section of mall on Crown-owned land at the Avon River, which takes in an area with eateries, cafes and retail stores, will continue to operate independently until January 31, 2017. The Crown intends to sell its land for retail development early next year. The Crossing A private development by the

Carter Group which is scheduled to open early 2017. A $140 million complex with retail, hospitality and office space featuring lane ways and courtyards. It will have a car park for 530 vehicles, and connect directly to the bus interchange, and Ballantynes through the existing sky bridge. BNZ Centre A private development by Nick Hunt’s company, Lichfield Holdings. The $140 million development, formerly named Cashel Square, which will be home to various offices and retail stores – including BNZ. Due to be fully completed by Christmas, with stage one likely to open in the next few weeks. ANZ Centre A private development by CHC Properties, jointly owned by developers Tim Glasson and Warren

Bell. Scheduled to open in the last quarter of the year, it will offer a glass-fronted shopping and office area with an atrium feature inside. Dubbed “state-of-the-art” by its architects. Justice Precinct A Christchurch Central Development Unit project, due to be completed and have all agencies move in by mid-2017 to create the largest multi-agency government co-location project in New Zealand history. An estimated 2000 people will work in or use the 40,000 sq m precinct daily. The Terrace Antony Gough’s oft-delayed $150 million project is finally looking to finish this year, with construction set to restart in March. The hospitality and office space looks likely to be finished by October.

BY THE NUMBERS • 49 per cent of recovery construction completed as at September 2015 • $15.8 billion of the estimated total $32.2 billion recovery construction costs spent by September 2015 • 1110 central city building consents, worth $1.76 billion, issued between September 2010 and December 2015 • Unemployment rate at 3.9 per cent for the September 2015 quarter, compared to the national rate of six per cent • Canterbury’s GDP growth in the year to September 2015 was 3.5 per cent, compared to 3.1 per cent nationally • Almost 75 per cent of central city landowners have development plans under way or complete

How to handle awkward conversations SOUTHLANDERRRS have something over Cantabrians. One huge thing they get right. Let me explain. . . Before you question my bloodlines, yes – I’m a born-and-bred Cantabrian, black-and-red blood, go the Crusaders – so on, so on. But having family from smalltown Southland has taught me to appreciate some pretty fundamental things about the place. Like their small talk. I’ve come to realise that us citydwellers are absolutely useless at making friendly conversation. We seem to prefer to jam our headphones in, refuse to say hello to strangers, and when we accidentally bump into someone we know? We pretend we don’t notice them. The supermarket’s got to be the worst place for this. You know the drill – you see your neighbour/colleague/thatperson-you-met-once-but-can’tremember-their-name. You have a sudden urge to ignore them. But after 12sec pretending to read a mi goring noodle packet, you realise its futile: “Oh hey! Random acquaintance! I didn’t see you there.” This is how you will likely continue the awkward conversation, in five easy steps: 1 – Start with something confusing. Something like “Hey, how are ya?” will work. Just make sure you say it casually, so they don’t know if it’s a real question or not. They’ll reply with “Good, and you?” (99.9 per cent guaranteed)

Emma-Jane

and from there you can just repeat “Good, and you?” until you realise . . . you’ve already done that. 2 – Next should follow a question that shows you are remotely interested in how their day/week/ life is going. The key thing here, and I mean KEY, is this: No matter what is asked, the answer should be one word: “Busy.” How’s your job going? *Sigh “Busy.”

Good weekend? “Busy – it just flew past.” Foolproof. On to step number three. 3 – Yay! Now you can move onto Christchurch’s favourite subject: The weather! Whatever’s going on outside, complain about it. But if that’s not enough grumbling for you – why not move onto number four? 4 – Complain some more.

MUMS & DADS

Would you like your children to exercise more and earn some money?

DELIVERY PEOPLE

WANTED The Star requires delivery personnel in all areas of Christchurch. The work involves door-to-door delivery of The Star newspaper.

Please call Leanne Lucas 364-7451 or Mark Coulthard 364 7453 email: deliveries@starmedia.kiwi

You must start this part of the chat with something like: “It’s terrible how . . .” and continue with some universal grumble about traffic, the latest virus which is supposed to kill everyone, or maybe even Donald Trump. Remember: You live in a firstworld country, so if you’ve got nothing to complain about here, complain about somebody else’s problems overseas! 5 – Finishing up. This is where it gets awkward. The ice-cream is melting in your trolley, your phone has buzzed (twice) and all you can think about is getting home to watch the cricket. But you don’t know how. So make sure you both say “Goodbye” at least three different ways, before uncomfortably parting ways. Don’t worry – you’ll bump into each other again, with twice the social awkwardness, at the checkouts. That’s pretty much how it goes. Which is why I can’t wait to go see the ridiculousness that is the Southland McLennan family in a couple weeks’ time. I’m going to smile at everyone, chat with the neighbours for hours about things that are actually important to them, and probably exchange full sentences with complete strangers at the supermarket. Everyone will wave, people will be friendly, and the world will be good again. – Emma-Jane McLennan, emma-jane.mclennan@starmedia. kiwi

City gamblers spending less on pokies

POKER MACHINE spending in Christchurch last year dropped 3.1 per cent on 2014, against national trends. The Internal Affairs Department’s figures show spending on gaming machines in pubs and clubs (excluding casinos) rose by 2 per cent throughout New Zealand in 2015, from $811.4 million in 2014 to $828.1 million The drop in Christchurch’s figures coincides with rebuild work passing its peak, and temporary workers leaving the city. The national increase in poker machine spending was exactly in line with a 2 per cent increase in the country’s population in the year to last September, the latest figure available, indicating that spending per person was unchanged. However, even that was a change from a long-term downward trend in pokie spending since gambling laws were tightened and local councils were allowed to impose “sinking lids” on pokie machine numbers in 2004. Since then, pokie machines outside casinos have shrunk by a third from 25,221 to 16,393, and pokie spending outside casinos has dropped by a fifth from $1.04 billion to $828 million. In the past year, spending has increased the most in cities with the fastest population growth such as Tauranga (up 6.9 per cent), Hamilton (up 4.6 per cent) and Auckland (up 4.5 per cent).

THAT’S ODD

WHILE EVERYONE knows about cats getting stuck in trees, it’s not as often that you hear about a rabbit stuck on a roof. But firefighters in Northern Ireland dealt with just such a case recently, when strong winds threw Bumper the bunny’s hutch into the air. “The wind caught the hutch and sent it flying into the air and it has catapulted the rabbit out of the hutch and onto the roof,” Omagh Fire Station District Commander David Doherty said. Bumper was out of the hutch by the time it crashed against the side of the house. But he was still stuck on the roof. Fortunately, firefighters were soon on the scene with multiple ladders and a reach pole. The rescue took 40min.

Gardening Advice with Transplanting Roses

Q

Like Daltons Ltd on Facebook

We’re moving to a smaller property, hopefully in February. I want to take some of my favourite roses with us, which includes a special Heritage climber called Madame Caroline Testout. Is it best to prune them hard before digging up? The ones I have transferred to pots have not done very well, probably due to weather.

Congratulations! Today’s winning question came from Elizabeth Dicks.

A

While it is comparatively easy to shift roses during the winter months, given your circumstances it’s worth shifting your favourite roses now. This can be achieved by cutting back the rose very hard - to around 30cm from the crown of the rose to outward facing buds. As much root as possible should be dug up and the rose placed in a large container filled with Daltons Compost. The plant should then be well watered and placed in a sheltered, warm position (but not in direct sunlight). Hopefully after 3-5 weeks new growth will appear on the rose. Keep the rose in the container until plenty of new growth has appeared before planting out at your new home.

Mulching is the process of covering the soil with organic matter to reduce water loss, add nutrients and help with weed control. Even if you are the most hands-off gardener this is the most important task to do, especially during the summer months. It’s vital in maintaining a healthy garden, helps protect plants from drying out and regulates soil temperatures.

PRIZE PACK!

Apply a layer of mulch around plants, trees, and especially pots. As organic mulch breaks down over time it improves soil quality and structure by encouraging micro-organisms and worm activity.

We have Daltons Garden Mulch & Grow packs to giveaway valued at over $100!

While the plant is in the container, water thoroughly and regularly but avoid over watering which may cause the disturbed roots to rot off. Do not apply fertiliser during this time as the plant is stressed and needs to recover before it starts picking up nutrients.

Each prize pack contains: • • • •

In regards to the roses you have already transferred into pots; place them in a sheltered position as mentioned above. If there is a lot of dead wood on the plant, this should be removed to allow room for fresh young growth to appear from the remaining healthy rose bush. Hedging your bets with borders THEY DEFINE spaces, make a perfect weather break or backdrop to the garden, can form a feature wall to show off other plants and with modern day technology pruning them is a relatively simple job. Before planting a hedge it is a good idea to decide what purpose the hedge will have; to keep passing traffic noise down, for privacy in the garden or to create rooms in the garden. There are many different purposes for hedges and many different plants which can be used to form them. Another question for the gardener,

We’re for every gardener

autumn planting • moon calendar

We’re for every gardener

FlAnders PoPPy Its significant story

prior to planting a hedge, is whether it should be formal or informal. Formal means to clip into shape while informal refers to a row of plants pretty much left untrimmed which will grow into larger trees or shrubs. For best results with hedges it does pay to trim them regularly as you’ll find the hedge will be healthier, a lot better to look at, tighter and have a lot more growth down the base. A hedge can be anything from a low border of buxus through to a large hedge of macrocarpa so as you can

100%

imagine, there are many plants that can be used. Some of the most popular plants for hedges are buxus or english box hedge (right). Buxus sempervirens is the most common for hedging and can grow anything up to 2m high. The best buxus hedges are generally those between 50cm and 1m-high. There is also buxus sempervirens Suffruticosa a smaller growing plant that can be trained to 25cm high as a very low hedge. Buxus is easily trimmed and can be trained into some amazing shapes only restricted by your imagination.

Gardening Guide Saffron

weeks, stalwarts like penstemon, marguerite daisies, lady’s mantle, heuchera, pulmonaria and lavatera will bounce back. For really sad-looking plantings, give them a boost with a few drenches of Seasol or worm wee over a two-week period. For vegetable patches that didn’t cope well with the summer holiday, remove anything that has gone to seed, hoe off the weeds, fork in some compost and start again with new planting ready for autumn harvest.

Saffron is the gold of cuisine, in fact it’s more expensive than gold. The question is, does the investment of saffron, meet the culinary satisfaction? Those of us who have cooked with it would most certainly say yes. This exotic and expensive spice is both captivating and intriguing and we would like to teach you how to grow your own.

Preparation Dig beds to a depth of 15-20cm and incorporate Oderings Compost into the soil. Fertilise beds after planting the bulb. You can use Tui Bulb fertiliser, but if you want to get more specific and use a magic combination, this can be found in our gardening guide online.

Planting Corms are planted 10cm deep, 10cm apart. Water in with a liquid fertiliser containing seaweed, fish emulsion and trichoderma. A new product called ‘Fish & Seaweed Growth Booster’ by Egmont’s Commercial has all three of these ingredients. This product is an essential part of your saffron maintenance.

Each corm can produce up to six flowers over the flowering period. The amount of flowers increases each season for a number of years, and then decreases as the corms get overcrowded and compete for nutrition. Dig corms up every three to four years and re-plant.

Flower Processing The flower has three parts; the petals which are purple, the stamen which is yellow and the stigma which is orange to maroon (and has three prongs). The stigmas are removed a variety of ways. Generally its easiest to hold the stigma with the fingers of your left hand and pinch the bottom of the flower with the finger nails of your right hand, (and the flower falls to pieces) leaving the stigma in the left hand which is then placed on a the drying tray in a straight position. Stigmas are dried for 2 hours at 65C in a dehydrator. Remove from the dehydrator and store in an airtight container. To read more view this full article online at www.oderings.co.nz

Harvesting

Clematis montana.

CLIMBERS

Those that flowered in spring and summer can do with a trim now. Wisteria will be ready for a decent haircut, so remove the old flower stems to encourage new tendrils, which should be tied down to prevent the plant from becoming out of hand. Clematis montana thrive with a good short back and sides, too. Pandorea can have a second flush of flowers in some areas. Prune back after flowering to maintain the shape. Wait for mandevilla and bougainvillea to finish blooming before you look to the clippers. These divas of summer will bloom for a few months more.

VEGETABLES

Sow more rows of carrots and beetroot. Both take about three months to mature from seed and crops sown now will see you through until winter. For speedy salad greens, look to spinach, rocket, mizuna, cress and mustard. Thin out parsnips and Daikon radish as these root crops need room to fatten up. Allow two to three fingers spaces between each one. Remove the flower stems of rhubarb as soon as they appear and throw away any tatty and dead-looking leaves. They love a good mulch of animal manure – water the clumps well first and then cover them over with the manure.

Flowers and leaves can appear from the last week of March into May over a four week period, this is brought on by the first rains towards the end of March. Generally, however, the harvesting season is through April. Flowers need to be picked every morning as early as possible. Flowers that are proud off the ground and showing a part of stem can be picked. Use your thumb and first finger and slightly twist, or you can nip with finger nails.

LAWNS

It is all about thatch at the moment. Over the warmer months, layers of lawn clippings fall down to the soil surface, creating a barrier for moisture and fertiliser to get down into the root zone. Now is the time to de-thatch lawns, it is simple and easy to do. For smaller lawns, simply use a rake, and try to scuff up the build-up of thatch.

Nice plump corms ready for planting now. Will flower this season, giving you tasty saffron.

Massive range of great quality native trees and shrubs. Hardy and versatile in most situations.

HERBS

Cobs are fattening up quickly, so water the plants deeply at least twice a week. If cobs haven’t evenly formed kernels on each cob, this is due to poor pollination. There is nothing you can do about it now, but for next season make sure you plant the crop close together, in blocks rather than rows, to ensure the tassels pollinate one another. Harvesting tips: once the tassels go brown and start to shrink and the cobs start to angle themselves away from the main stem, the cobs are ready to pick. You can always be a little sneaky and pull back the leaves to see how the cobs are maturing.

SWEET CORN COBS

Keep planting basil, dill and coriander. Trim back thyme, sage, oregano and rosemary to encourage a flush of fresh new growth. French tarragon is at its best over the next few months – dry any excess stems ready for use in the winter. Many herbs and edible flowers freeze wonderfully well in ice cubes. Simply pick borage, calendula petals or nasturtiums and freeze into mini-muffin tins and, hey presto, frozen ice-cube flowers. Once the flowers or herb cubes are frozen, they can be transferred into snap-lock bags and kept in the freezer, while another batch is being frozen. Drop a cube or two into a fruity cider or punch.

minor but handy features such as USB connections in the cabin front and rear. At 4.5m the Impreza isn’t a big car, but it is mid-size and, as such, it could be classed as a genuine fiveseater, although it is cosy rearwards for three adults. SPECIFICATIONS

Price: Subaru Impreza S, $29,990. Dimensions: Length,4580mm; width, 1740mm; height, 1465mm. Configuration: Four-cylinder longitudinal (boxer), four-wheeldrive, 1995cc, 110kW, 196Nm, continuously variable automatic. Performance: 0-100km/h, 11sec.

Up front sits a 2-litre, petrol-fuelled, four-cylinder engine. One of Subaru’s main manufacturing differences lies with the engine’s design. The four-potter is horizontally-opposed, I have a lot of respect for boxer engines, for one I like alternative technology and, for another, boxer engines develop a lot of natural torque. That being the case, they are strong through the mid-range, yet will happily rev to the top end without apparent fuss. Subaru has constantly refined the horizontallyopposed engine development, not only is it more complex now with twincamshafts over each bank of cylinders, but it is been developed to the point where it is as efficient as any four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine. Subaru claim a 6.8-litre per 100km combined cycle fuel usage rating, which equates to around 42mpg in imperial terms. On my four-day test the comprehensive trip computer was constantly listing around 8.2l/100km (35mpg), which was relative given that I spent a lot of time in inner-

city traffic and slow speed conditions. On the highway the trip computer lists an instantaneous readout of 7l/100km (40mpg) cruising at 100km/h, the engine turning over quite relaxed at just 2000rpm. Power is rated at a generous 110kW (6200rpm) and 196Nm (4200rpm), these are healthy figures for a 1995cc engine, and if you add into the equation the almost direct drive through a continuously variable automatic transmission then the Impreza feels lively under the accelerator, returning a standstill to 100km/h time of just a fraction over 11sec. Because the Impreza naturally feels agile, I took the test car on the road leading to Lake Coleridge, I didn’t venture far past Terrace Downs but I pushed hard enough to glean satisfaction from the way the Impreza handles. Grip in the first instance is delivered by low decibel, but sticky, Yokohama tyres 205/55 x 16in, and if you add in the drive you get from each corner the Impreza feels balanced and nimble, so much so it doesn’t seem like a mainstream car. And that is the way Subaru as a company would like you to relate to its cars, it isn’t a niche market operator, it sells way too many cars for that, but it is positioned on a limb and I think that is why it has done so well globally. In New Zealand we see four-wheeldrive as far more than a safety mechanism, it is the car for many alpine sport recreational users, and even the Impreza fits into that bracket. If only I could talk my wife into parting with a few dollars, I could then exorcise the demons that haunt me every time I think about that lost Impreza opportunity.

Five tips for renovators…

Building or renovating a home to take you through the generations can be challenging. Before you start, here are 5 things you should think about: 1. Creating flexible living spaces. How will your family’s use of living spaces change over the coming years? Are the living spaces big enough to cater to an older or extended family? 2. Slashing your energy bills. With energy costs on the rise, thinking about sustainable design minimises the impact on the environment... and your monthly power bill.

design is linked in with the overall design for the renovation. 4. Future-proofing for new technologies. You can future proof your home by designing in smart cabling systems that act as conduits for future technologies such as internet over the TV. 5. Family considerations. Think about extending bedrooms and having living spaces for study. Also, factor in bedroom size: children might be happy in single beds when they’re young, but there will come a time when they want a double bed and the extra space that goes with it.

3. Creating outdoor living spaces. People renovating often add a lower level or build on top. Both options allow you to create a linkage to an outdoor setting which can be designed as an extra “living room’’. Ensure the landscape

By Jaimie Keay THE CRUSADERS had their first taste at training on Thursday of what conditions they will likely face this weekend in Brisbane.

THE NEW Brighton Power Boat Club will celebrate this weekend with its 125th anniversary regatta at Lake Forsyth. Club vice president Craig Stevenson said as one of the oldest clubs in the country, it is exciting to reach the milestone. “I think we are one of the very first clubs in the country and we have quite a few of our life and casual members getting involved this weekend just to be a part of the event and anniversary celebrations.

“I think we will have each of the five clubs in the South Island represented at the regatta. People driving and also helping out as well,” he said. Stevenson said they are expecting about 25 boats to compete in the five classes at the regatta, with the sport described as ‘Woodford Glen on water’. “We have boats racing in the juniors, clubmen’s, v8 flat bottoms, grand national hydroplane and the series 3000,” he said. Testing and practice will be on Saturday, before the first race is due to start on Sunday at 10am.

The Christchurch driver has 39 points from a possible 40, and

The team will meet the Queensland Reds team at Ballymore in Brisbane on Saturday night and with the team training in 31 deg C, lock Sam Whitelock said it was good preparation for what they could expect on Saturday. “The boys certainly felt the heat today but it is likely we will have something similar in Brisbane, especially since they had I think 37 a few days ago,” he said. The two teams also met in a preseason game last year, and Whitelock said the team expects a similar tough battle up front to what they encountered last year. Captaining the side this weekend will be Jimmy Tupou with Whitelock on the bench alongside fellow All Blacks Joe Moody and Codie Taylor. Fijian international Ben Volavola has been the first chance to lay a claim on the vacant number-10 jersey with Richie Mo’unga named on the bench.

Petty under cloud for mile By Jaimie Keay A HAMSTRING injury has Angie Petty fighting against the clock to be ready to race on Monday. The Commonwealth Games athlete was expected to race in the women’s street mile event as part of The Big Shot event, but after picking up the ‘niggle’ at the gym she is hoping for the best. The event will be held at the Retro Sports Facility on the corner of Durham and Kilmore Sts, with the women’s mile the first race of the day. “I have training tonight which will be nice and easy and then will make the call on about Saturday if I will go ahead in Monday’s race,” she said. After running a personal best time at the nationals in Wellington in the 3000m, Petty said she feels her build-up has been strong leading into the event. “Apart from this niggle, this is probably the best build-up I have had. My endurance is the best it has been so I just have to be positive and hope everything is okay come race day,” she said. With Australian runners Melissa Duncan, Genevieve Lacaze and fellow Christchurch runner Rosa Flanagan also lining up on the

it here at home, I have plenty of family coming so it will be nice to have their support, especially as it is a big year with Rio ahead,” she said. Last year Petty ran the 800m in 2min 62sec to go under the A standard qualifying time for Rio but will await her formal qualification from New Zealand
