Call to boycott cafe at Te Hapua BRIDGET RUTHERFORD
A Halswell group is urging people to boycott the cafe at Te Hapua: Halswell Centre after the lease was given to a nonlocal business. Wellington-based company Wishbone was granted the lease for the new centre’s cafe in February last year before the centre opened in November. But the Halswell Community Project is frustrated the lease was not given to a local business and wants people to go to nearby cafes instead. Chairwoman Chrys Horn said the city council should support

local businesses. “We do work quite hard to think about local economic development so I get a bit frustrated when I see these things. I was a wee bit disappointed and thought why did they do this,” she said. “It’s a pity it wasn’t at least a Christchurch business, we pay our money over the counter and it pretty much goes to Wellington.” She said all the food was flown down from Wellington,

and was packaged in plastic which was not economically friendly. Christchurch company Red Cafe, which has cafes in South Christchurch and Riccarton libraries, was the only other applicant for the lease. City council property consultancy manager Angus Smith said the city council chose Wishbone because it provided a quality product, value and professional service. “The Wishbone proposal demonstrated a diverse selection of product, highly efficient systems and proven business model. Wishbone employs local staff
and contractors in their operations and places an emphasis on sustainability.” When asked whether cost or the fact it was a local business applying influenced lease decisions, he said it factored in several aspects within the evaluation process. Halswell Residents’ Association secretary David Hawke said he had no problems with the cafe itself, just the process that lead to it being chosen. “A number of people on the committee have raised the issue that the council depends on people paying rates for its funding yet the council has
awarded the contract to an out of town company that doesn’t pay rates.” He would like to see the city council adopt a local purchasing policy when it came to these sorts of leases. Freedom camping report Community board asks for information on freedom campers

An urgent report into the freedom camping woes at Addington Park is expected to be ready in two weeks. The Spreydon-Heathcote Community Board last week asked the city council for information on the problems freedom campers were causing at the park. The board wanted to know what extent the rules were being broken and if the freedom camping bylaw was being correctly enforced. The report is expected to come back to the board by its next meeting on February 19 so a solution could be found. Residents have had a guts full of freedom campers reportedly drinking, leaving used toilet paper in the trees, taking up car parks and defecating on the
playground swings. It is one of three locations in the city where freedom camping is allowed after a new bylaw was introduced last year. Freedom campers can stay up to five nights from one hour before sunset until 9am. But residents say the campers are breaking the bylaw by staying for longer than they are allowed. City councillor Phil Clearwater said he asked for the information because it was important the concerns of

residents were addressed. “Should the number of nights for people to stay be reduced or the number of people allowed to camp there be more limited? Are the toilet facilities at the park satisfactory?” He said the information would give the board an accurate picture of the issues, and help find the best solution. But Addington resident Bruce McNabb said Addington Park was not a campground and wanted to see more done. “I think they can do more
because there’s a lot of vacant land on the east side, why don’t they set up something there,” he said. “It’s not a camping ground, it’s as simple as that.” He said there were still freedom camping vehicles hanging out onto the footpaths at night time. WOMAN CRASHES INTO BARRIER A woman in her 30s was taken to hospital with moderate injuries after her car hit the barrier on the Southern Motorway last week. St John was called to the scene in Addington at 9.56am on Monday. FORMER PATROL CHAIRMAN DIES City to Sumner Community Patrol’s former chairman Donald Walker has died from cancer at the age of 75. Mr Walker died on January 19. He joined the patrol in 2011, and became chairman in 2012. He resigned from chairman in December when he became too sick to carry out his role. PETITION AGAINST BOTTLE STORE Opawa residents have spoken out against a proposed bottle store at 132 Opawa Rd. A communitygenerated petition received nearly 450 signatures opposing the plan, and 46 people wrote to the District Licensing Committee opposing the plan. Tusharkumar Limbachiya applied for an off-license to sell alcohol at the site from 7am-10pm every day. Submissions on the plan closed on January 29 and the District Licensing Committee will hold a public hearing to determine the outcome.

Having a blast at Berry Fest Thousands of berry lovers headed along to the Opawa Farmers’ Market annual Berry Fest. In spite of a disappointing berry growing season, customers snapped up the more than 600kg of berries available on. It was a nervous week for market manager, Doug Hesp, with three of the market’s usual berry growers pulling out due to
a shortage of fruit. “Fortunately, we managed to secure a few new berry growers to the market as we were very close to having to pull the pin on the event – it’s always been one of our busiest markets on the calendar and this year was no exception.” Their next event will be the ‘Tomato Fest’ coming up in March, which will include the tomato growing competition.

Restoring spawning habitat for whitebait Part of the Heathcote River has been turned into Hotel Hilton for whitebait. Forty-five organisers and volunteers helped install 192 straw bales along the banks of the river, from Jacksons Creek to the Woolston Cut, on January 30. Bales were also laid at Steamwharf Stream, a contributor to the Heathcote, and Lake Kate Sheppard, a tributary of the Avon River. The installation project was
part of EOS Ecology’s Whaka Inaka, which aims to restore spawning habitats for whitebait along the Avon and Heathcote rivers. The bales will provide that habitat come spawning season. The team set off from the Gelita factory, where it had been storing the bales. The bales will now be checked every month, starting next Monday, to see if whitebait have been spawning, and where.

Memorial gate repairs under way for Anzac Day BRIDGET RUTHERFORD
Waltham’s historic war memorial gates will be repaired for this year’s Anzac Day celebrations. An 11-week construction programme to repair the heritage gates began last Monday. The Wilsons Rd gates, which list the names of those from the area who died in World War 1, were damaged in the February 2011 earthquake. Several pillars collapsed, the stone work was cracked and a pillar was on a lean. City council capital delivery community manager Darren Moses said the repairs would cost about $166,000 and the deadline was April 25. He said the stone masonry gates and fence will be deconstructed where required and rebuilt. “Work includes, careful deconstruction of the leaning pillar and deconstruction of the remaining stone on the fallen pillars. All deconstructed stone is to

Sydenham business owners have won a battle to stop a contentious land swap from going ahead. The sale and purchase agreement between the city council and Sikh Society to swap part of Buchan Playground has now expired. The city council wanted to swap a piece of land at the rear of the playground with a nearby smaller piece of land owned by the Sikh Society on Wordsworth St.
The Sikh Society would have paid for the extra land, and wanted to rebuild its gurdwara on it, but business owners said they needed the green space. Business owners, city council, and the Sikh Society were asked to come to some sort of agreement late last year, but were unable to. The sale and purchase agreement lapsed on December 18. The Sikh Society’s gurdwara was demolished following the earthquakes and it would like to progress with plans to rebuild.

the specialist contractors to do the work. The city council has repaired 11 of the 17 war memorials damaged in the earthquakes, three are underway and three are in the design phase. Restoration of several other war memorials is also planned.

Work on the Addington stage of a cycleway which will run from the central city to Little River is expected to kick off this year. The project was given the green light yesterday at a meeting of a city council committee. It will include new cycleways from Moorhouse Ave through Church Square to Barrington St, new crossings over Wrights and Lincoln Rds where they intersect with the Southern Motorway, and improvements to the cycleway through Marylands Reserve. More than 120 people made submissions on the plan, and committee chairman Phil Clear-
water said community involvement was important in developing the plan. “Local people have helped shape these plans. For instance, we were told there was a problem with vehicles taking a short-cut from Brougham St along Collins St to the new business areas in Addington. Staff developed three options for people to consider and based on feedback we will be banning the left-turn from Brougham St into Collins St.” He said it was an important part of the city council’s $156m Major Cycle Routes network. The new cycleway is expected to open next year.

I went past there at 10am this morning (February 1) and it was packed with them, my understanding is they are supposed to be away by 9am. As a ratepayer I object, they are not contributing anything to the city as tourists, only creating more mess and pollution.
Last week the Southern View asked its readers whether they thought the city council needed to make changes to the freedom camping by-law in response to problems at Addington Park. Readers respond Linda Mann: Thank you for drawing this issue to the public. I find it very disappointing the freedom campers have abused the goodwill of the people of Christchurch through the city council. What a shame the young folk can’t feel safe in their local park. It is also a shame for everyone who used to enjoy sitting watching the windsurfers in the evening, with car parks being scarce. The sooner the city council puts a stop to freedom camping the better. Michael J Brathwaite, Spreydon: It seems to me that we have ample evidence that freedom camping in Addington Park is a bad idea. I realise the offenders are probably a small minority, but in view of the horrendous problems
mentioned in your article, I think camping there should be banned immediately as a health issue. A review in two years’ time is too far away for those of us who live in Addington, and I doubt that councillor Phil Clearwater’s “educational approach” will be effective. Everyone should already know the difference between a swing and a toilet. For some of us, no amount of scrubbing is going to make us ever let our children play on equipment that has been soiled with human waste. Also, who knows what foreign germs they might be leaving on the ground or play equipment? I am aware that the needs of the tourist industry are usually given preference over the needs of everyone else in the community, but tourists camping in
parks are unlikely to be spending a lot in restaurants etc. Addington Park is there to benefit the ratepayers, and as freedom camping is currently depriving residents of its use, it must be stopped. The city council does not seem to take it very seriously, and the police are too busy with traffic duties to concern themselves with the safety of the community. If nothing is done about the campers, we might have to form a vigilante committee to drive them away. That may not help the tourist industry, but it is time the city council realised most of us do not work in the tourist industry and care more about the health and safety of our families than the profits of overpriced tourist attractions.
Anthony Coulter: No no no, it is not about evidence. As a ratepayer in the area it is not a camping ground in any shape or form. This is a recreational area for residence and upkeep payed for by rates, any more upkeep for camping grounds are payed for by the users. Many of the said campers have vans or cars that do not have toilet facilities, hot and cold water and cooking facilities. Maybe the city council should put these in, then they would need to pay. Oh, that’s what a council calls a camping ground and then the users would need to pay. Julie P: I think the problem lies with people thinking it’s okay to treat New Zealand like this. Singapore is renown for hav-
ing tough rules on littering. Let’s look at what works elsewhere and adopt it. I see so much litter everywhere from everyone. We need to get tidy, fast. The Garden City is becoming the rubbish city if we keep it going this way. Defecating, and loo paper used is so dangerous, especially at playgrounds. It could start serious disease outbreaks, spread new parasites and must be addressed heavily. Put cameras in these places, if caught, it’s straight to airport and on a plane home with a stamp to say no return. New job opportunities could be created to watch cameras and enforce. The message is clear. When they get home they can explain to their colleagues, family and friends. Q: “Why did you get sent home from NZ?” A: “I sat on a swing and pooed on a playground for their children”. The message clear, come and respect or you’re not welcome. If tightly managed this could be a good eradication point for slovenly, filthy, disrespectful travellers with the convenience of a city to manage them. This sort of law shouldn’t take years to process. We need a quick and common sense solution. We need it fast. Because if they do it there, they’ll do these things everywhere around New Zealand.

Louise Fahey, Addington/Spreydon: Being a responsible dog owner I have just returned from walking my dog to our local park, unfortunately that now refers to the local freedom campground at Addington Park. After complaining for months about the new residents, I decided to not be so judgemental and start walking my dog there again as technically they are in the car park and we can still use the park, however, I have returned home horrified and completely disheartened. What is going on city council? This no longer feels like a safe place to walk alone, as a female with a dog!!! The park is in the worst state I have experienced in five years of living here and using the park numerous times a week. Not only are the bins full, which is a regular sight these days, but the surrounding gardens and middle of the park are strewn with loose pieces of rubbish, mostly food packaging (noodle sachets, chocolate bar wrappers and alcohol cans). I usually let my well-behaved dog off his lead for a good run around to burn excess energy but today I had to keep him on his lead due the hazards, rubbish and that of him distracting freedom campers cooking their dinner on gas cookers. The thing I am most disgusted about isn’t the fact they are freeloading in my local park (the only suburban park that allows freedom camping). It is the fact that they are quite obviously also too lazy to walk

Is NZ education better than it used to be? the 100m or so to the toilet block so are relieving themselves under the big tree at the end of the path, right next to the car park. I had my suspicions confirmed this evening when my dog was overly interested in this area and to my absolute horror quite clear to see on the dying grass is numerous wads of used toilet paper and soggy mounds of human waste! I pick up my dog’s poo every time we are out and dispose of it accordingly yet the city council is enabling these freedom campers to leave their poo in our local park. Who is going to clean this up, it’s an absolute disgrace? And just as humans don’t like to step in doggy poo while out I most certainly don’t want my dog to roll in human poo while out! Why are we allowing these campers to camp in suburban Christchurch where we pay our rates and have a right to use our local facilities without this mess. Could we not spare some sections in the red zone to facilitate them if we have to, chuck in some coin operated showers, a toilet block or two and call it a freedom campground?

This is because we did not expect every student to remain at school. Thus School Certificate was scaled to fail 50 per cent of those who sat, let alone the students who left before the exams. Now, however, the imperatives are different. In the 1990s there was a sea-change towards adapting systems to meet individual need, not the other way round. Spreydon School relocation ramps up Plans for Spreydon School to move to the former Manning Intermediate School site are moving ahead. The school is set to open at the former Manning Intermediate site by the beginning of 2018. The budget for rebuilding Spreydon School is $5.6 million. Acting head of the education infrastructure Jerome Sheppherd said the former Manning Intermediate site is around 500m away from the Spreydon School’s current location and is closer to Hillmor-
ton High School. He said the hall and administration block on the Manning site is still in good condition and will remain on site for the Spreydon School to use. The Christchurch Schools
Rebuild programme is investing $1.137 billion to refurbish, rebuild and repair 115 schools in the city including South Hornby School. Spreydon School is one of 38 CSR projects in design or under construction. By 2023 the CSR plan to have more than 80 per cent of state schools meeting core standards for lighting, ventilation, heating (etc) and infrastructure to support the latest digital technology.

shape of a home, to show the feel of the school. It also contains an upside down book which is the symbol of St Anne’s and learning. The arrow represents direction and aspiration in learning and the cross at the centre shows how the school has its faith at the centre of what it does.

SCIRT’s programme of repairs to pipes, roads, bridges and retaining walls will be completed by December. Hillmorton students ready for 2016 Hillmorton High School welcomed its students back for the year with a powhiri and barbecue last week. The whole school made the most of the 27 deg C heat on Tuesday for the welcome back events. The middle school students have been working with senior peer support
leaders for orientation days to settle back into school. Hillmorton has had large enrolment numbers, and has had to put in an extra class in year 7 and 8 to accommodate them. Deputy principal Eleanor Sim said it was great to see so many new faces.

The city’s top waka paddlers are in full training mode as they look ahead to the world championships on the Sunshine Coast. Team Aoraki Matatu from Te Waka Pounamu have qualified for the world championships after winning the national men’s master’s title at the Waka Ama national championships. The competition was held at Lake Karapiro in Cambridge on January 21-23. It was the first time the team of Jack Wormald, Iaean Cranwell, Ross Gilray, Todd Jago, Craig Pauling and former Crusader
Adrian Tukaki competed in the master’s grade at nationals after previously paddling in the open grade. Gilray said the team are likely to face the strongest competition from Tahiti at the world championships, but the team believe they have a shot at winning. “Outrigger canoeing in Tahiti is like rugby here in New Zealand, it is their national sport. So we will have to bring it if we want to have a chance at gold,” he said. Finishing the heat and semi-finals in second, in a time of 1min 56.50sec and 1min 57.95sec respectively, Gilray said the team always knew they could pull out
the ‘big one’ in the final. “We normally pull it together at nationals, and save a little bit. Unlike rowing or kayaking, we can have four or five races in a day. It was part of our team tactics to save the best for the final,” he said.

Once again this week there was an example of a homeowner ending up in hospital being treated for smoke inhalation because they went past the point of a sensible attempt to extinguish a fire. The incident happened last Friday in Woolston and involved a dishwasher. A fire in a dishwasher is hard to reach firstly because of the confined position of the machine. Then even if the source of fire is accessible unless a fire extinguisher is handy how do you put it out? I’ve seen some tragic results of people staying in a burning house in a futile and ultimately
fatal attempt to put a fire out. Unless you are absolutely sure you can succeed please, please, just shut the door and get out. I know we often get called for cats up trees. But how about a dog stuck in a car wheel arch? Also last Friday, this occurred in Phillipstown and was successfully accomplished by the city crew. And the subject of a thousand different comedy sketches in movies over the years was not so funny for the older gentleman who chose the dark of night last Thursday to prune his tree and ended up clasping desperately to a branch when the ladder fell over. Addington’s fire crew responded and assisted him back to ground. Shaken, but not stirred?

teachers nurture jazz talent
anny Addis got hooked on music when he was 13 years old. After years of playing in high school bands he decided to pursue his dream: being a jazz musician. He studied CPIT’s Bachelor of Music Arts in Jazz and loved it. “CPIT immediately felt like home. I’ve always had a passion for music, but I never took it seriously. I was a bit nervous on my first day, but meeting like-minded people was awesome. We were like a big family.” He studied two years of Jazz and then ‘arranging’ in his third year, to learn to compose music. The teachers really made a difference, he says; “The teachers were absolutely life changing. They go the extra mile for you, it goes way beyond just teaching in class. You can form a band with them and they give advice. I would always take music to one of the tutors during lunch time and he was really supportive.” The energy and inspiration Manny got from his teachers he now passes on to his own students, by teaching at the School of Rock. “The teachers used a very personal way of teaching. They try to make you play like yourself, developing your own style. I am trying to do this with my students as well and of course I try to make it fun too.” Manny loves teaching, but standing on a stage and performing for a big crowd is what makes his heart beat faster.
“At least once a week I’m on stage, playing guitar in my band or DJ’ing. Once I opened before the Gorillaz, which was awesome. When the show is going well, it instantly makes you feel amazing. You feel the energy.” Manny is grateful with where he is in his life at the moment. CPIT played a big role in that, he says; “I don’t feel like any of the musical stuff I’m doing now, I could have done without the Bachelor of Music Arts. CPIT Aoraki tutor Tim Budgen has seen multimedia evolve during the last 15 years of teaching in Art & Design at CPIT. “I am definitely interested in the convergence of art and technology and in non-traditional outcomes for multimedia work. There is a good representation of this in Christchurch where you have, for example, projections onto graffiti in the Spectrum festival, Gapfiller projects challenging norms and bringing people into creative spaces in the city, lots of street art and the Giraffes project where painted giraffes started appearing around the city. “There was an underground of nontraditional art here before, but it has really expanded since the earthquakes and gained huge awareness and acceptance.” This expansion of art, combined with Tim’s connections, opens opportunities for students. In winter, for example, Motion Design students will help to create a light installation and animation event in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens. Tim’s industry experience, specialising in interactive video installations for live music events has further convinced him that CPIT Aoraki is on the right track - preparing graduates with the tools and the creative critical thinking skills that this fast moving industry needs. are working in a variety of companies. “A lot of our students are interested in film and gaming, but some specialise in drawing and concept art. We have graduates at Christchurch game design companies Stickman and Cerebral Fix, quite a few at WETA in different roles, some doing digital design for web, one is working as an artist and another developed an app for his final year project which is available on the app store.” The Bachelor of Design (Motion Design) uses the latest industry equipment including Cinema 4D for modelling, animating, lighting, texturing and rendering. CPIT Aoraki enjoys a close relationship with Cinema 4D creators Maxon and distributors Megabits who support the programme with software and a major prize for the best 3D work. HYDRATE TO ELEVATE We all know drinking water is important, but the majority of us simply don’t drink enough even though we know it makes us feel great when we do. We look at the benefits and motivate you to drink more with a few tips on how to make it just a little more palatable.
W
ith over a quarter of Kiwis consuming less than two glasses of water a day and only 5% drinking more than the recommended eight, the message obviously hasn’t hit home on the importance of hydrating our body. A recent survey conducted by SodaStream found that Cantabrians are particularly guilty when it comes to their water intake. With 82% drinking less than six glasses of water a day, but with over 85% admitting they feel healthier when they drink more water, something needs to be done to bridge the gap in terms of what we know to be true and what we’re actually doing about it. This same survey revealed that although 41% of us limit how many soft drinks we consume due to our concerns over sugar content, the same number of people said tea or coffee is this their
number one drink of choice. Some people even believe that the water consumed in their cup of Joe constitutes part of their water intake. This is a fallacy. As caffeine actually dehydrates us, as does alcohol too, it means we need to drink even more water to compensate. Not so surprisingly the reason we don’t drink nearly enough water is that we simply forget. Now with apps you can download direct to your smart phone, there are no more excuses. Further studies proved that people who had a SodaStream machine in their homes were more likely to drink more water. In fact, the study showed that people drank 30% more water. For those of us who aren’t used to drinking water like it’s going out of fashion, there are plenty of ways to increase the fun factor while still being healthy.

Country music legend Brendan Dugan and his dad Pat will be appearing along side little sister Annette at the Hornby Workingmen's Club at 2pm on Sunday 14th February. With a career spanning over 4 decades, Brendan Dugan is something of a household name. Well known for his live performances, TV appearances, and 15 albums to his credit, Brendan has claimed many awards during his career including NZ Entertainer of the Year. As well as touring and performing regularly throughout New Zealand and Australia, he has appeared further afield at venues such as the legendary Grand Old Opry in Nashville. Also well respected in country music circles, Pat Dugan has been involved in the music industry for many years as a mentor, emcee, and performer. A few

Brendan & Pat years ago the Country Music Association of NZ recognised his efforts by presenting him with an award. This was a very proud moment for the family. Soon to turn 90, he is still in great voice and 'sings like a bird'. Completing the lineup, direct from USA, is 'little sis' Annette.
