Richmond’s development to continue The Warehouse’s latest store will be opening in Richmond next Thursday but demand for retail space means construction around the Queen Street site will continue until the middle of next year, with two new buildings to be completed. Gibbons Construction has been on the former Placemakers site since February 2013 when it started construction of the Kmart complex. It completed that building last November and then immediately moved next door to start The Warehouse. “It’s been one of the biggest projects we have done and we are really pleased with the way it has come together,” Gibbons Construction managing director Scott Gibbons says. “We have had 60 to 70 people on site with all our staff and the contractors and they have all done a great job.” The 3500 metre square Warehouse was constructed using 701 cubic metres of concrete, 22 tonnes of reinforcing steel and 81 tonnes of structural

steel. Scott says they have also had a good working relationship with the Tasman District Council and Richmond Mall owners Tinline Properties, which has helped the project run smoothly. The development of one central carpark, between the Richmond Mall and KMart and The Warehouse, has been critical part of the project, he says. Gibbon’s construction crew won’t have to move far once The Warehouse opens next Thursday as they will be working on another two retail premises on the same site. A two-story building adjacent to The Warehouse and a retail building next to the Richmond Police Station will be completed by the middle of next year. “It’s all demand driven,” Scott says. “We wouldn’t

Characters galore at book parade There were Spidermen, Snow Whites, Little Red Riding Hoods, Where’s Wallies and even a Scooby Doo, but it was Cruella de Vil and her 23 Dalmatians that stole the show in Richmond School’s annual Book Week parade through Richmond. The school’s pupils and teachers all dressed up as their favourite book characters for last Friday’s
parade that wound its way along Queen Street and through the Richmond Mall before returning to the school. Deputy principal Donna Miles says everyone put a lot of effort into their costumes although she singled out teacher Renee James and student teacher Naomi Thurlow and their class for their costumes based on Dodie Smith’s 1956 book and the classic
1961 Disney film, 101 Dalmatians. Renee was dressed-up as the wicked Cruella de Vil, who was the book’s villain, while Naomi and the 23 pupils in their year one and two class were dressed and madeup as 23 of the 101 dalmatians. Renee says she decided to dressup as Cruella de Vil after watching the film of 101 Dalmatians during the school holidays.

There was a sense of deja vu for Prime Minister John Key when he visited a Nelson company that has become a market leader in manufacturing concretecutting and polishing tools. Last Wednesday, John Key told staff and guests at Holer Diamond Tools on Main Road Hope that one of his first official duties as a Member of Parliament was to "unveil a concrete mixer". Then he cemented his concrete theme by commissioning Holer's new $1 million laser welder which is used to manufacture diamondtipped concrete cutting tools. "It was the very first thing I unveiled as a Member of Parliament and I'm not talking about anything flash like this," he joked. The Prime Minister has come a long way since then and so has Holer which was started by Fred Holer in his garage in White's Road near Richmond in 1992. Today, Fred's sons Phil and Simon head a multimillion dollar company that employs 24 people and exports concrete cutting tools and technology all over the world. "I was a concrete cutter and master builder in Austria before I came to Nelson in 1991," Fred says. "I saw a need for

Holer's Phil Mayer gave John Key a demonstration of the
welder which is the only one of its kind in the southern hemisphere and just one of five in the world. The PM told Holer's staff that innovative technology like their welder was helping strengthen the country's manufacturing sector which had now grown every month for the last 21 months. "A lot of what is happening right around New Zealand, and you can see it here today, is the importation of equipment from overseas which lifts the output for New Zealand and allows export into markets around the world," he says. The Prime Minister also visited the Nelson College trades academy last Wednesday as well as the Nelson-Tasman Hospice with Health Minister Tony Ryall.

Police: Take caution on icy roads Police are reminding the public that the roads can be hazardous at this time of the year, and the message comes after more snow fell in St Arnaud and on the Takaka Hill, last week.

About 160 engineers, painters and specialist tradespeople will be busy on the Interislander flagship Kaitaki, which arrived in Port Nelson early on Sunday for a week-long overhaul. Port Nelson marine specialist Diverse Engineering are the prime contractors for the overhaul and project manager Mike McDowell says they went straight to work when the Kaitaki berthed. They will be installing a new rescue boat, painting and carrying out minor repairs - the ship will also have a planned survey by Lloyd’s Register while in Port Nelson. “We’ve got all of our 50 staff

WINTER WONDERLAND: After a year without snow at ground level, St Arnaud residents and visitors have already been treated to a white winter, and would have woken up to snow at their doorsteps last Tuesday morning. St Arnaud had its largest snowfall of the year on Tuesday, with snow tumbling down at around 9:30am and again at 5pm in the evening, beautifully captured by Tasman District Council’s Snap IT HD webcam. But the amount of snow was unable to be accurately recorded, as Met-Service does not have an automatic weather station in St Arnaud and is instead reliant on members of the public reporting it. $650,000 BOOST FOR HOSPICES: Hospice and palliative care services in Nelson will receive around $650,000 extra next year thanks to National’s $20 million hospice boost announced this week. There are two hospices in the Nelson Marlborough region – Hospice Marlborough and Nelson Tasman Hospice. “Hospices make a huge difference to people’s lives by ensuring terminally ill people are as free from pain and suffering as possible. They also provide care and support for families and friends,” says Health spokesman Tony Ryall. FINAL MONTH FOR GIGATOWN: ‘This weekend the Gigatown show is coming to Richmond Mall with an important message: there is less than a month to the end of this round of the competition, and if Nelson wins, the whole region wins. The Gigatown Nelson volunteers will be on hand this weekend to help people to sign up and do the quizzes. The team will be at the Mall from 10am to 4pm on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 August. Duo reach Rockquest final ELAE don’t hold any grudges for not making the Nelson Smokefreerockquest final, but their notable omission was made even more glaring after the Garin College duo were selected for the national final next month. Anna Robinson and Olivia Nott, who are best friends, have been performing together for just over a year and a half. They previously went under the name Livvy and Anna, but have since merged their names together to create ELAE (pronounced L.A). Anna says the pair are “so excited” to be able to perform at the national final in Auckland after thinking their chance was over. “It’s a proud moment because we pushed through something that we thought
was the end for us,” she says. “It shows that if you do keep trying then something good can come out of it.” Just six bands and three solo/duos were named in the national final, but ELAE were the only act from Nelson, with Nelson’s winning band Oh Blok missing out. They were given a “highly commended.” ELAE is the only duo amongst the top three solo/duos, but Olivia, who is the younger sister of Broods members Caleb and Georgia Nott, doesn’t believe that would be an advantage for the pair. “We are different to the soloists because we have the opportunity to do harmonies,” she says. “But it doesn’t mean it’s an advantage. Everyone is really talented.”

I have discussed this with councillors and they are willing to look at it and put it on the table.” Although the forests are a steady source of income for council, generating about $1 million a year, Michael considers that a dam would be a better investment. “What’s the best value for the community? Is a forest the best value or is a dam and a guaranteed water supply? The forests generate an income but so will the dam. There’s also the question of should the council be involved in forestry anyway?”

First sailing recreated As Rule Britannia filled the air and the thoughts of those gathered were with Nelson’s courageous WW1 service men and women, the first sailing was brought to life once more. Participants donned their WW1 uniforms in an open air ceremony that aimed to re-enact the brave footsteps of Nelson’s men and women as they prepared to set sail to war. Nelson mayor Rachel Reese and Nelson RSA recreated the messages behind the stirring speeches that
would have fare welled our service people and others across New Zealand. Nelson City Council’s WW100 Coordinator, Ian Barker, says the event was a great opportunity for everyone to understand the sense of honour, occasion and trepidation experienced by the heroic young Nelsonians, although at the time of the sailing, the war had just begun and the horrors of fighting were still to hit Nelson. A single wreath was laid to remember the loss of life on both sides of the trenches.
Six vehicles stolen on the one weekend A recent spike in car thefts has police concerned, with six stolen vehicles being reported last weekend alone, but social media is playing a part in helping owners recover them. Four scooters have also been stolen in the past seven days and all have been recovered. Police say scooters are becoming a “popular target” for joyriders, and they’re concerned by the recent spike, which includes various types of vehicles. A number of the thefts involved vehicles where the keys had been left in the ignition, making them easily attainable. “This current spike is certainly a concern and we would encourage everyone to lock their vehicle and remove valuable items from parked vehicles,” says sergeant Dave Prentice. “Some people are making it very easy for thieves to take their vehicles. I would recommend anything that is going to make your car a less attractive target - such as a steering lock or an alarm.” But not all of the thefts were of unlocked vehicles. Nelson teenager Ben McLeod’s Nissan Primera was
stolen from his Curtis St home in Stoke last month. It was locked and is believed to have been taken for a joyride – which could be a popular theme, with Nelson Bays Police reporting a “very high” rate of recovery. Ben’s car was stolen in the night, around 4am, but was recovered just a week later after his mother, PetaMarie, had posted details of the car on various Facebook pages, including local online garage sales. “When I put it up so many people told me they had had their car stolen too, it just went on and on,” she says. “It wasn’t something you hear regularly in Nelson, but there’s something going on.” Just last week a 2007 Ford Ranger that was stolen from Richmond, was recovered after it was posted on the Nelson Police Facebook Page, and Dave agrees that social media was helping victims as the publicity was likely to put more pressure on the offender to abandon the vehicles. Police statistics show that there have been 146 unlawful takings in the 12 months leading up to June 2014.

POWERtalk International Waimea Club member, Nissa Elsey’s writing talents have been recognised by the group’s international organisation. POWERtalk is an international, not-for-profit group that provides professional coaching in effective speaking and presentation skills. Nissa won their national writing contest earlier this year and has just received confirmation that her script, titled Moonlight Escapade, won POWERtalk’s international competition. Nissa will be recognised at the group’s biennial international convention next year.
Auctioned Medals The rare collection of medals from the Second World War that were auctioned last weekend drew a large crowd. Along with the medals was a portrait of the Nelson soldier who was awarded them and a letter he wrote to his family during the war. Auctioneer John Walker says the medals sold well and that it was also very nice to see they were bought by a local so they can remain in the soldier’s community. Tapawera Open Boar Hunt. The Tapawera Rugby Club’s open boar hunt finished at 4pm on August 9, with the heaviest boar weighing in at a very decent 64 kilograms. For three years the open boar hunt has been a major fundraiser for the Tapawera Rugby Club. and this year it drew in 50 entries plus 40 children’s entries, with cash prizes going to the top five heaviest boars, the biggest tusks and the average weight.

Stoke Seniors working for community The Stoke Community Centre’s Social Seniors Club needs a new van to help pick up their “least mobile” members from Nelson, Stoke and Richmond, so they can enjoy the club’s daily meals and activities. So that’s why they have entered the Car Company Charity Drive competition, which is offering a prize of $10,000 for a group or organisation that is doing great things in our community. And there’s no question the Stoke Seniors qualifies for the competition with the club providing a place for their 450 members to meet and socialise and enjoy the most amazing meals. “We are a social club for homebased seniors,” chairman of the board of trustees Allen Johnson says. “A lot of older people living at home find themselves being isolated and that’s where we come in - we are like a youth drop-in centre for seniors.” Allen says the Stoke Seniors provides a full day of programmes for members including entertainment, education, tours and meals. The club targets home-based seniors aged 60 and over, and aims to help their members maintain their independence and keep them

Allen says Stoke Seniors is based at the rear of the Stoke Community Hall on Main Road Stoke employs four fulltime and one part-time staff who are assisted by 20-30 volunteers. The cooks provide a picnic lunch for club tours on Mondays and lunches for “50 to 60 people” at the club’s headquarters on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Stoke Seniors have an annual budget of $260,000, with $60,000 of that being spent on food. They receive $60,000 in funding from the Ministry of Health with the remainder coming from community grants and fundraising.
Allen says the club “has a number of things on their wish list, but the big ticket item is to replace the oldest van in our fleet.” The vans are critical for picking up their least mobile members so they can enjoy the daily activities and meals at the club. Stoke Seniors are holding their next fundraising quiz night at the club’s hall on Friday August 29 from 6pm to 8pm. Tickets for the quiz are available from Stoke Seniors Hall at 548 Main Road Stoke or by phoning 547 2660. The Car Company Charity Drive has attracted over 40 entries so far with entries closing at 4pm this Friday.

Sun City Rockers have changed the venue for their weekly gatherings and will now be meeting at Club Waimea. For 15 years Sun City Rockers have kept the spirit of Rock’n’Roll alive with club dances, lessons and the chance to compete against other Rock’n’Roll enthusiasts. Club Waimea was well-represented at the Clubs NZ South Island Snooker Pairs Tournament, held in Oamaru on August 7, 8 and 9. After a day and a half and eight games of section play, four pairs qualified for the championship proper along with 27 other entries from throughout the Island. Mark Friend and Nobby Yorwarth had a good first-round win over the Oamaru No.1 side before losing out to the eventual tournament winners, Dave Whitehira and Alan Robertson from the Hornby Club. Nathan Geddes and Ray Denby were beaten in the first post-section round, but then proceeded to sweep aside teams from Papanui and Invercargill
to reach the Flight final. There, they had a real battle with the Oamaru No.1 side, before coming out on top in the third frame to take the win 2-1. Barry and Ray Weavers qualified once again but struck a tough draw which stalled their further progress. Kerry Laing and Colin Bowden also made the cut after section play, mainly courtesy of a most-unexpected victory over the tournament’s fifth seeds from the Richmond Club. Kevin Whitlow and Jon Sharpe won through to the final of the Plate competition, where they went

It’s always tested to make sure it fits properly and anybody who purchases a seat from here gets lifetime installation free; it doesn’t cost anything, so they can call back 10 or 15 times a week, it doesn’t matter,” says Craig. “Some customers think they are a pain coming back to get their car seats re-installed, but we say to them we’d sooner they came back because there’s nothing worse than driving around with a loose seat.” Craig says that up to 89 per cent of child restraints are still installed incorrectly, which is too high a number. “We’re brave enough to say this really isn’t fitting the car properly, and we’ll try another solution until we find the correct restraint. We have chosen to be child restraint technicians and we renew that every two years, which means being fully up-to-date with each new seat that enters the market so we know what it can and can’t do. All the products are great but everything has a limitation, and people need to be aware about what that is. Wakefield rower brings home bronze medal
Wakefield can feel proud to call itself home for one of the Junior World Rowing Champs bronze medallists, Sean Ducray. Nelson and Waimea College rowers Olly Stephens and Sean Ducray arrived home to the roar of the Haka from Nelson College’s Fell House boarders and a welcoming committee of friends and family. Nelson Rowing Club’s talented athletes have achieved a great result after their debut performance in international level rowing and along with their team mates, Jack O’Leary from Kavanagh College and Ari Palsson from Whakatane High School, have taken home bronze in the Men’s Quadruple Scull. After being selected for the New Zealand team in April, they spent six weeks training as a squad at Lake Karapiro before travelling to the Junior World Rowing Championships in Hamburg, Germany this month. Although they weren’t able to take home the gold, which went to their German hosts, followed by Great Britain. Sean couldn’t be happier with their result. “We couldn’t have done anything more than what we did. I’m really proud of what we’ve done, it was really competitive but I enjoyed it so much and I can’t wait to do it again. It was very professional and competitive and you could see what it would be like to be an international racer.”

Wakefield school ,is very lucky because the local Wakefield Hotel has given them $500 dollars. The cheque was presented at a recent school assembly. It was raised at the annual stag and boar hunt held in Wakefield. Every year once they have raised the money, the hotel gives some to a local group or charity and this year we were the lucky school who got it. We have decided we are going to buy some large logs to build a rim for our new vegetable garden and we are looking forward to having fresh vegetables. “I’m really happy that the Wakefield Hotel has given us the money and I’m excited about how we will spend it,” says Wakefield School principal, Mr Verstappen.
We have some new members of Wakefield School. They’re white and fluffy and not like any other students we already have. They are the new pets in Totara Tahi syndicate. Rooms One and Two had a vote to see what class pet they should buy with the money they raised from their first market day. Rats were voted number one so last term a couple of students went with the teacher to choose the new rats. The class voted to call them Shadow and Coco. Shadow and Coco eat nuts and seeds. They live in a very nice cage that was donated by the vet with interesting activities like a wheel, ropes and ladders. There is a roster for kids to take them home during weekends and holidays. The children love having them because they climb all over them and are cute and soft.

Waimea hockey teams take out Tasman Championship Waimea College came from behind in both key encounters to secure the boys and girls titles at the Tasman Secondary School Hockey Championship last week. It was the first time in five years that Waimea College had taken out the boys division, their 2-2 draw with Nelson College giving them enough points to take the top spot, at
Saxton Field on Wednesday. Nelson College had to settle for second place, after also drawing with Marlborough Boys’ College. And the girls made it a Waimea College double, shocking Nelson College for Girls to score six unanswered goals after trailing 4-1 at half-time, to secure the come-from-behind 7-4 victory.

Each secondary school will be competing at one of the various national hockey tournaments next month, with five tiers of respective competitions being held during tournament week. Gibb’s Hill no match for Susie Wood Richmond’s Susie Wood may have been a Commonwealth Games road cyclist but it was her running that gave her a the winning edge in the Gibb’s Hill Challenge in Golden Bay. Susie and Nelson’s Ingrid Richter produced almost identical times in the 23 kilometre road cycle from Takaka to Wainui and return in the annual duathlon held on August 10. Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club
The 2014/15 Dawnbreakers Fishing Club season gets ready to kick off on August 24. Some big changes to the club over the last two years has seen membership steadily growing and it looks like it’s not going to slow down any time soon. A change in venue to the Tasman Bay Cruising Club will see our once a month Club Day, on either Saturday evenings or as Sunday afternoon socials, in the heart of the Nelson Marina. The club season extends eight months from October through to May, with prizegiving in June. Boat fishers, kayakers, jetskiers, land based anglers, divers and fresh water fisher folk are all welcome with senior men, ladies and junior sections to enter. On the monthly club social days there will be a sausage sizzle, raffle and our usual fish of the month awards along with a ‘bugger’ award. The club has had some excellent speakers in previous seasons and social events who gave talks on things like boating education, MFish (now MPI), commercial fishing, the rescue helicopter as well as club members giving informative talks. This year the club continues with its length-based competition to continue promoting catch and release fishing as well as only taking enough for a feed. It has always been a concern of the club having its members taking breeding size snapper so they can weigh them in for club points, when many of the members said they would have preferred to release them. We took this on board and have changed to a length-based system where a member can catch a 20lb snapper, take a picture of it on an official measure board and then release the fish. Photos would then be emailed into the weighmaster and a point
per centimetre system will decide who has the biggest fish and most points. We have a point formula worked out that will make a 20lb snapper earn the same points as a 20kg Kingfish as we see those sized fish as “Pin fish.” (A pinfish is a fish that reaches that “magic” weight for that species, like 20lb snapper, 7lb blue cod etc). Accumulated monthly points will go towards a range of trophies that the club has on offer throughout the season for individual classes, as well as for longest fish in various species. The club calendar last year included trips away to Okiwi Bay, French Pass and Havelock and will be repeated again this year all going well with the weather. Last season we also used local charter boat operator Seabird charters for those club members that don’t have boats big enough to get up to D’Urville Island so they can have a taste of some of the hot action the area offers. We have found Barry and Lynley Bird excellent operators that have given our club members some great fishing experiences. This season we will also be having some club outings targeting areas closer to home. Also another benefit of belonging to a club is that some weekends members go out and find a certain bait or area is working better than others and as a club we can share that information to members, so everyone benefits. But you need to be a member and on our email list to get this up to date information. The club will be holding an Open Day on the August 24 at the Tasman Bay Cruising Club starting at 2pm. In the Grade 1 game between Nayland College and Garin College it was definitely a game of two halves. Nayland were on the back foot from the get go as coach Trevor Olley has struggled to field a full line up for the past eight games due to injury and illness. A reshuffled mid court could not match the experience of Garin, particularly in the second quarter when they were out scored 12–2. The lack of combination, coupled with the excellent defensive work of Kate Hand and Sarah Robinson forced a blow out. Nayland made several changes at the major break which soon began to pay dividends as they drew the third quarter 7-all. Tayler Boeyen’s move to goal attack had the Garin tall timber defensive pairing moving, which made it easier to find free space. Nayland left their best until the final quarter when they outscored Garin 8–5. Holly Chandler had a great game at goal-keep as she picked off numerous well-timed intercepts,

Rosette HailesPaku at wing attack in the first half was effective for the second phase play and along with her replacement Jess Brooks were accurate on the feed to the shooters. Makaila Powick had her usual industrious game until she left the court and was replaced by Keely Kira. Piki Boyles was introduced at wing defence in the second half and did a great job to apply pressure on the outside of the circle and along with Kate and Sarah were an absolute wall of defence. Kate and Sarah rebounded strongly and pulled in numerous intercepts. Even though Garin won the game 31–21, they will need to address the basic fundamental errors when under pressure. There were several unforced errors which need to be eliminated from their game, however they will be looking to address this at the Supernet competition and the remaining competition games before heading to the South Island Secondary Schools next month. Nayland have decided not to compete in Supernet.

Proposal to Amend the Tasman District Council Consolidated Bylaw – Chapter 4 – Speed Limits 2013
Tasman District Council Community Grants Close 31 August
The Tasman District Council Consolidated Bylaw – Chapter 4 – Speed Limits Bylaw 2013 came into force on 23 July 2013. The Council has now resolved to undertake an amendment of the Chapter 4 of the Consolidated Bylaw. The draft amendments to Chapter 4 are now available for consultation in accordance with Sections 83 and 84 of the Local Government Act 2002. Chapter 4 of the Consolidated Bylaw sets out the speed limit for various local public roads (not State Highways) within the Tasman District. Only the NZ Police can enforce speed limits. The setting of speed limits is governed by the Land Transport Rule - Setting of Speed Limits 2003 and requires a number of factors to be considered when setting speed limits. The Council encourages you to have your say about the amendments to Chapter 4 of the Consolidated Bylaw. Please take the time to make a submission detailing your views and any changes you think would enhance it.
