Greg invited to attend Anzac centenary Continued from page 1 Mr Healey was informed by email he’d been granted a double pass and was one of only 950 New Zealanders who were awarded the same honour. Any Kiwis hoping to attend the 100th anniversary of the first landing of the Anzacs at Gallipoli had to put their name into an official ballot, which attracted 9851 applicants. Mr Healey will travel to the historic battlefields for next year’s April 25 celebrations along with his wife Adrianne. “It was very exciting to know I’d

been chosen,” he said. “I’ve got no preconceived ideas about what the celebrations will be like, but I’m sure they’ll be nothing short of spectacular. “To a certain extent, it’s like a pilgrimage for Kiwis.” Two years ago, Mr Healey discovered he had a great uncle who fought and died in the First World War. His parents had never spoken of this man, named Patrick Morland, and soon Mr Healey found himself conducting research to learn all he could about this long-lost relative.

He is now in possession of military documents and a photograph of Mr Morland, who was a rifleman in the 3rd Battalion and killed in action at the age of 22. “I got more and more interested and started to read lots of historical books. “That is what started the whole thing off, really. “Last year I travelled to Belgium and France and went to all the battlefields.” While there, he also visited his great uncle’s grave.

Mr and Mrs Healey say they are looking forward to being part of the Anzac centenary and, although it is still more than a year away, they will begin planning their trip as soon as possible. Mr Healey wants to know if anyone else from Picton is going, as he would like to meet up with them. “It would be nice to meet up with somebody, just knowing they are from the same province. “It would be nice to meet some fellow winners.”

Calling all WWII vets By Kristy Martin Marlborough’s World War II veterans will be photographed on Anzac Day as part of a nationwide project aiming to capture the images of all 3000 living Kiwi vets. More than 100 photographers from the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photographers will take portrait photos of veterans around the country on April 25. The photographs will go into the national archives. Auckland-based photographer Ilan Wittenberg will be visiting Blenheim to photograph our 50 local veterans. Each of the portraits will be gifted by the NZIPP to the Royal New Zealand RSA as part of the 2015 World War One centenary celebrations. They will also be publicly displayed at locations around New Zealand as part of a commemorative touring exhibition. Chief executive of the Royal New Zealand RSA, David Moger, believes that the project will result in a collection of national significance. “Not only will the body of work make an immense contribution to New

if not all, of the 50 WWII veterans attending the Anzac Day service in Blenheim. He will set up a small studio inside the RSA immediately following service. “I want to make it as easy as possible for WWII veterans to take part and it’s hoped that most veterans will be able to spare one or two minutes after the service to have their portrait made,” he said. Ilan, an award-winning photographer, promises a complimentary print as a gift to every veteran who participates. Veterans are asked to visit the Panama room at the RSA and to wear their uniforms, hats and medals. Those who no longer have their uniforms are still invited to take part in the project. “It is a professional shoot and it should only take a few minutes of their time. “It is mainly to keep their memory alive for future generations and loved ones and to let them know their sacrifices will be remembered,” Ilan said.

No increase to pension, says PM The Sun newspaper raised the issue with Mr Key during a press conference last week, but he would not commit to raising the benefit, which currently sits at about $714 per fortnight for singles and $549 each for married couples. We asked the Prime Minister if increasing the pension was one of his election promises. “Well the benefit has gone up considerably over the five and a half years we’ve been there,” Mr Key said. “There is an adjustment, or a mechanism, that works out what the pension should be and it’s

linked to after tax average wages, 66 per cent of those, so it’s been rising very rapidly under our government because, fundamentally, average wages have been rising faster than inflation.” In response to Mr Key’s comments, Labour’s spokesperson for senior citizens, Ruth Dyson, said she too had concerns about the hardships many seniors faced. She said Labour was committed to maintaining the relativity of superannuation to the average wage. “In addition to that we are also looking at additional measures to offer increased support,” she said.

CAN MAN PASSES AWAY Blenheim’s well known and fondly remembered ‘can man’, Raymond (Henry) Strange, passed away on Saturday aged 86. Henry was known by many when he walked the streets with his wooden cart, recycling cans and bottles. He will be remembered at a private funeral service today.

With Easter marking the official end to the patrol season, Surf Life Saving New Zealand is urging Marlburians to be cautious when swimming at an unpatrolled beach. Traditionally, volunteer weekend patrols begin at Labour Weekend in October and continue through to Easter for most areas of the North Island and parts of the eastern region. In other parts of the country, where the weather is cooler, patrols have already ended. Every year, lifeguards spend over 200,000 hours patrolling around 80 beaches nationwide, rescuing on average 1200 people.

After years volunteering her time to the Marlborough sporting cause, Mel Morris has been rewarded on a national scale. A Blenheim local, Mel was crowned Sport Maker 2014 at the New Zealand Sport and Recreation Awards in Christchurch on Monday night. The award recognises the national sport volunteer of the year, a person who goes the extra mile to make sport happen in Kiwi communities. Mel also won $1000 worth of sports gear for her trouble. The award is a split initiative between Sport NZ and the Lotto Volunteer Foundation. Mel grew up locally, and was first introduced to volunteering as a child by her parents at the Moutere Rugby Club. She has been a volunteer for the last nine years. She is currently the Junior Advisory Board convenor at Moutere, and treasurer for the Marlborough Sub Union Junior Advisory Board Committee. Royals were relaxed and down-to-earth Protocols went out the window By Kristy Martin Marlborough mayor Alistair Sowman is delighted with the success of last Thursday’s royal visit, while his wife Thelma says the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were so easy to talk to, she felt like she had known them for years. The Sowmans hosted Prince William and Kate during their time in Seymour Square, when they took part in a ceremony honouring New Zealand’s war veterans. After weeks of practicing the protocols, the Sowmans said the royal couple were so relaxed everything just ‘went out the window’. “They just bounced up and introduced themselves,” Mrs Sowman said. “They didn’t wait to be introduced.” Prince William told the mayor Blenheim’s clock tower was very impressive and that driving past all the vineyards heading into town made him thirsty. Kate told t he mayoress Blenheim was a beautiful town

and that she enjoyed seeing it from the air as they flew in. The two women talked about Marlborough’s colleges, as Kate attended Marlborough College in England, and Mrs Sowman told her the two national anthem singers, Olivia Burns and Alice Schofield, were from Marlborough Girls’ College. The duchess also said she enjoyed the camaraderie between the war veterans. “They were both really, really down-to-earth and really easy to get along with,” Mrs Sowman said. “They were lovely with the kids. It’s something those kids will remember for the rest of their lives.” According to the mayor, the couple was “very engaging and a delight” and he took pleasure in seeing the looks on people’s faces in the 7000-strong crowd, as everyone was clearly overjoyed to see them. “We were very lucky to have them here. “It all went well, a very successful day.”

“It went better than we ever expected it would,” his wife added. “I loved it. “It was interesting being surrounded by all of their security. “It was very tight. “I kept getting told to hurry her along but I thought nah, let’s try and keep her here a bit longer.” The Duke and Duchess, who received gifts of flowers, letters, toys and even baby clothes for Prince George, gave plenty of time to the excited crowds and the war veterans they met with. Local vets were proud to be a part of the ceremony and were pleased they got to chat with the royals, says Marlborough RSA vice president Rod Shoemark. Mr Shoemark, who read the RSA ode during the service, said the conversations between the vets and the royals varied from sharing their wartime experiences to recommending their favourite Marlborough wines. “They were all thrilled,” Mr Shoemark said. “I thought it was amazing. “It will be a memory that will William and Kate surprised everyone with their relaxed manner. last a lifetime.”

Marlborough crowd loved Kate By Celeste Lodewyk As the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge stepped out to greet the crowd last Thursday, screams of excitement and vigorous flag waving hit frenzy level when Marlborough people caught the first glimpse of the royal couple. But if you were to pick favourites, the crowd clearly had theirs. Kate! Almost instantly the crowd gushed over Kate’s blue Alexander McQueen designer jacket and began discussing her ‘beauty and grace’. “Look how beautiful she is, absolutely stunning,” one woman exclaimed.

“She well and truly outshines all of us here,” replied another. William and Kate were greeted by Mayor Alistair Sowman and Mayoress Thelma Sowman and immediately it was evident that Kate and Thelma hit it off from the start. The two woman casually chatted, exchanging warm smiles while William shook hands and exchanged stories with RSA and defence force representatives. During the wreath laying ceremony a hush went over the crowd, honouring those who had fallen, before William and Kate stood with heads bowed at the foot of the clock tower.

William and Kate then turned and went separately to greet two groups of war veterans who waited with eagerness to meet the royal couple. Kate spent a slightly longer time talking to her group, examining photographs and smiling throughout, while William could be seen exchanging warm handshakes and leaning in close to those who were hearing impaired. With the formalities over William and Kate walked through the clock tower and emerged smiling and waving to a cheering crowd that had waited anxiously for hours in the damp weather to see the couple.

The emphasis is to support you to independence and for you to maximise your quality of life at home.” If you need support over and above what is funded by these agencies, or you do not qualify for any government-funded assistance, you can also purchase assistance direct from an accredited home healthcare provider. Media beams Blenheim across the globe Eighty media representatives from around the world arrived in Blenheim for last Thursday’s royal visit. Photos and videos of the Seymour Square wreath-laying ceremony and public walkabout and the royal couple’s tour of Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre have been beamed across the globe, giving Blenheim the type of publicity money can’t buy, according to Mayor Alistair Sowman. Marlborough, as a destination, now needed to cash in on this experience, he said. A number of British newspapers and magazines sent reporters and photographers to cover the event, including the Times and Sunday Times and the Daily Mail, plus Sky News was here. Hello, OK and People magazines and US Weekly were also among the throng of international media. Australia’s Sunrise and Today programmes did live broadcasts from the square, as did TVNZ’s Breakfast show. The nine-day royal tour of New Zealand has cost $1.2m, but Prime Minister John Key told reporters in Blenheim it was “without a shadow of a doubt” worth it when you considered the international exposure the country was receiving.

By Kristy Martin Staff at Specsavers Blenheim got a rude shock when they arrived at work on Friday to find their building flooded. Ten client appointments had to be cancelled in the morning after three rooms received significant water damage due to Thursday’s rain. Dispensing partner Andrea Brown said the pre-testing room, testing room and staff room were all flooded when staff arrived about 8.30am. “We’ve had the plumber out and had people here mopping up. “It turns out we had a blocked gutter.” Paperwork in cupboards and some eye testing equipment was destroyed when water came in through the ceiling, along with staff clothing and shoes getting soaked, but fortunately none of the IT equipment was affected. The flooded rooms were being dried over the weekend and business was back to normal on Monday.

This will be the seventh year the show has run which will again be held at the Marlborough Convention Centre, with a preview night on June 5 and the awards dinner on July 6. New Zealand entertainer Jackie Clarke who performed, compered and judged last year will be returning again for 2014. “Last year’s show was a great success and received loads of positive feedback so we are really hoping to bring together another great show,” Robyn said. Church message offensive Dear Ed, I am shocked by the wording of the Easter message on the billboard outside St. Ninian’s Presbyterian church and shudder each time I pass it. To state that ‘Jesus is the ultimate blood donor’ is an affront to the man. I respect that Easter is the most important observance on the Christian church’s calendar and as a lapsed

Dear Ed, As March 31 neared (the end of the financial year), was it my imagination or was there increased frantic activity in road works, and contracting jobs? It must have been real because the way the “system” works - or doesn’t work - is that if money allocated in a financial year is not used up before March 31, then the same amount of money will not be allocated in the coming year. Bureaucrats being as they are, make sure it is all used up whether the work was needed or not. No wonder the country is in deficit and local rates go up. Don Coyote

Marlburians who want to have their say on how council is spending ratepayers’ money will get their chance, with the 2014-15 draft Annual Plan now open for public submission. Councillors have approved the draft plan which, if it wins final approval, will lead to an increase of 2.95 per cent for total rates and charges across the region. Mayor Alistair Sowman says councillors do want to maintain existing levels of service and they know there are some areas of work that have to be funded; like monitoring the water quality of the Marlborough Sounds and the need to upgrade some of Blenheim’s ageing stormwater pipes. The Draft Plan outlines how more than 90 per cent of the council’s spending goes into statutorily required regulatory functions and core infrastructure such as maintenance and replacement roads and footpaths, the sewerage system and water supply, community facilities, waste management and flood control. Proposed new spending areas in the

Draft Plan include a new commercial events fund to expand events and attract new ones, new funding for council-led economic development and funding for the coastal water monitoring. The draft Annual Plan also gives notice that one of the big projects ahead will be the rejuvenation of the Blenheim CBD, which may include the purchase of sites for a future library-community centre. Mr Sowman encouraged people to have their say. “Are the public happy with where we are going? “If you are unhappy, or even if you support what we are doing, let us know.” Submissions will be accepted until Thursday May 8.

Filtration too expensive By Adam Poulopoulos Marlborough District Council is exploring new ways to treat Awatere and Renwick’s water supplies after it was deemed ‘too expensive’ to bring drinking water standards up to scratch. Following meetings with both residents’ groups, council agreed the rates rises needed to deliver high quality water to these areas was too much for the affected communities to bear. The main issue facing council is treating protozoa, like cryptosporidium and giardia, which cannot be killed through chlorination. Normally, ultraviolet treatment would be used, but the cloudy Renwick and Awatere water would make it ineffective.

“The risk isn’t extreme, but there is a risk there” A filtration system is the next option, but cost analyses in Renwick and the Awatere showed a combined $16.2 million would need to be spent, leading to 65 and 95 per cent rate rises respectively. Council must take ‘all practicable steps’ to comply with New Zealand’s Drinking Water Standards, with affordability being one consideration. Council assets and services manager Mark Wheeler said other options, like slow-sand filtration, were being explored. “It filters out protozoa, and it’s something worth looking at if it suits local communities. “We think it would be cost-effective, but it does rely on needing a lot of land available.” He said it would be “crystal-ball gazing” to put a decision time on it. In the meantime, he said the risk to the public was not easily measurable. “The risk isn’t extreme, but there is a risk there. “Protozoa forms in the animal gut, so in the Awatere especially there could be a dead deer in the water supply, or it could get washed down off the hills.” The Awatere Valley has a boil-first notice on tap water, and about 3200 people use the Renwick and Awatere river supplies. Water supplies in Havelock, Riverlands and the Wairau Valley were also considered too expensive to treat, although risk there is significantly lower. UV treatment has been or is being installed in each of Picton and Blenheim’s supplies.

TripAdvisor rates us Blenheim has ranked eighth in TripAdvisor’s list of the top holiday destinations in the South Pacific. The world’s largest travel website released their 2014 list last week. The list was topped by Sydney, and Blenheim was the fourth New Zealand destination to feature, behind Queenstown, Rotorua and Taupo. TripAdvisor said “One of the sunniest towns in New Zealand, Blenheim is the perfect destination for foodies and wine lovers who love to soak up the sun while sipping the fruits of a vineyard’s labour.” Other New Zealand destinations to feature included Nelson, Wanaka, Tauranga and Christchurch.

Double the fun Twin sisters and best friends, Shirley Hawtin and Janette Simmons have been inseparable since the day they were born. Today, as the pair celebrate their 70th birthday, they tell reporter Kristy Martin about growing up in Blenheim, why they still dress the same and how they never go a day without speaking to each other. Identical twins Shirley and Janette have been wearing the same clothes since they were infants. Back when they were small, their parents would dress the cherubic blondes with the ringlet curls in the same dresses, complete with matching bows in their hair. “We always dressed the same because we wanted to, even when we were older,” Janette says. These days, when the sisters dress alike it is usually by accident. “We go out a lot dressed the same, not in the same clothes but in the same colours,” Shirley explains. “We’ve got a lot of clothes and we don’t discuss what we are wearing, so it is by pure coincidence we end up in the same thing.” On Saturday night, the well-known Blenheim women held a 70th birthday party at the Clubs of Marlborough, and this was one rare occasion when they did actually coordinate their outfits. Shirley and Janette Matthews were born on April 16, 1944. They came into the world 10 minutes apart - a fact, as Janette recalls, her elder sibling would use to get her own way. “I used to say to her, we’ll do what I want because I’m the oldest,” Shirley laughs. When the girls were three, their parents Russ and Marj moved them to Redwoodtown when their father opened the first general store. “There were no houses here, so it was a huge gamble,” Shirley says. “Mum’s father was H.J.S. Mitchell, a former mayor of Marlborough, and he was the one who told them to go to Redwoodtown. “Everyone thought things would go towards Grovetown, but then all the houses came here so it paid off.” When they were seven or eight, the girls would help their parents working in the store after school, weighing up the produce,

and they remember eating ice cream every day and happily stuffing their pockets with sweets. The pair attended Redwoodtown School and then Marlborough College, and their parents went on to own various shops in Redwoodtown, including a chemist, fish and chip shop, two hairdressers and a drapery store. They have two younger brothers, Graeme and Peter, who they are very close with, along with their wives Jenny and Claire. “We were always in the same classes,” Janette recalls of the twins’ time at school. “They separate twins now but we wouldn’t have wanted that.” Shirley adds: “We never played pranks on

people, but people got us mixed up. They still do.” In 1964, Janette married Doug Simmons and the couple recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Two-and-a-half years later, Shirley married her partner Graeme Hawtin. Like the twins, their husbands are also ‘best friends’ and therefore the foursome spend plenty of time socialising together. “We’ve got everything in common because everything we do, we do together. “We have the same interests,” Shirley says of her sister, whom she affectionately calls “Jet”. At school, both twins played netball;

they are now both on the MGC old girls’ committee and patrons of the horticultural society. They also worked together for 20 years at Mitre 10 Mega, a business Graeme and Shirley still own. (Janette retired last Friday, while Shirley retired two-and-a-half years ago.) The siblings have even had matching hip operations. “It was the same side, same hip, within six weeks of each other.” But despite all this, there have only been two instances in their lives where they have felt that ‘sixth sense’ that twins often share. Once was when Janette was about to go into labour with her first child and Shirley felt like she needed to go visit her sister, but didn’t know why. A few hours later, her niece was born. The other was when Janette had a headache all afternoon and, when it stopped, there was a knock on the door and she was informed Shirley had been in a car accident and suffered a head injury. There is a great energy between Shirley and Janette, who have always lived one street apart, and you can tell they make each other laugh a lot. They know they are lucky to have each other and the kind of close friendship most people can only dream about. They told guests at their birthday party they have never been lonely and have not spent a single Christmas apart. They can probably count on one hand the number of birthdays they haven’t spent together. Shirley says: “We keep good health and we still have fun. “Most people are shocked to find out we are 70.” Janette adds: “A male customer in Mitre 10 said to me the other day ‘Time has been kind to you.’ Isn’t that lovely?”

Poppy Day Appeal Tomorrow RSA volunteers will be on the streets throughout Marlborough collecting donations for the annual Poppy Day Appeal. The distinctive red poppies are exchanged for a donation in support of veterans as well as ex-service people and their families in need. The poppy also serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made, both past and present. Poppies were the first flowers that grew in the battlefields of Flanders

in Belgium during World War One and are a symbol of remembrance and hope. Po p py Day is usually held each year on the Friday before Anzac Day, but because this year it happens to fall on a Good Friday, the appeal is being held tomorrow, Thursday April 17. Grab a poppy at Z Z Energy is giving Kiwis more ways to show their support for Anzac Day, with poppies available at Z sites around the country throughout poppy week. RSA volunteers will also be collecting on-site, and virtual poppy donations on Z’s Facebook page will be available. In Marlborough there are four Z Energy sites; Z Redwood, Z Springlands, Z Grove Road and Z Picton. Z service stations will have poppies in-store from Thursday, April 17, and customers can choose to add $1, $2, or $5 to electronic transactions, as well as making cash donations at the till. RSA volunteers will also be collecting at Z service stations on Anzac Day, April 25. All donations made at Z’s neighbourhood sites will go back to the local branches of the RSA. Z’s Twitter and Facebook followers can also donate a virtual poppy between April 17 and April 25, with Z giving $1 for every poppy donated or shared online, up to $12,000. Chief Executive Mike Bennetts says Z supports Anzac Day because of its special significance for all New Zealanders, including its customers, communities and staff. RSA Chief Executive David Moger says the support of Z and New Zealanders will help the RSA to provide care and welfare to those who have served their country. “The first Poppy Day was held in 1922, and it’s fantastic to see

Sad farewell to iconic tree Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Past and present members of Renwick Playcentre are invited to say their final goodbyes today to their iconic walnut tree which will be cut down over the Easter holidays. The tree stood years before the playcentre opened in 1964 and a wooden fort was built around it for the children in 1993 by Michael Naus. This fort, the tree’s low hanging branches and walnuts have been a favourite feature for children visiting the playcentre, but now all that will remain will be a stump. The tree is now dead, and has become a hazard to the children, so it will be cut down, leaving just the fort around its base. The playcentre has plans to use the wood from the felled tree to carve a ‘storytelling’ chair, said Renwick Playcentre team leader

SHOVEL THREAT

At 8.20pm, a 34-year-old unemployed woman was arrested at the front counter of the Blenheim Police Station after she threatened police staff with a shovel. She has been charged with threatening behaviour, possession of an offensive weapon and breaching her supervision conditions. She was held in custody and due to appear in court on Monday.

ALCOHOL AND COFFEE STOLEN A house in Redwood Street was broken into overnight on April 10. Three bottles of alcohol and a packet of coffee were taken. The offender had forced a window to gain entry.

DOG USED TO HUNT THIEF A Merlot Place address was entered at 4.30am on April 12. The offender was discovered inside the house by the resident. The offender fled the address on foot and then it is believed he rode on a bicycle down Elizabeth Street. A police dog unit tracked from the address but was unable to locate the offender.

NAKED THIEF? Clothing was taken from a clothes line in Fulton Street, with a pair of jeans and shirts removed. Police are following positive lines of inquiry.

How does Solar power work? Solar Grid Tie systems utilise photo voltaic (PV) solar panels generally mounted on a roof to produce electricity. The light from the sun is absorbed by semi conductors in the panels such as silicon which excite the electrons; this in turn produces an amount of Direct Current which is then converted into alternating current through an inverter for use in your home or business. How to save on power? To really use your PV system to its full advantage you need to ensure you use as much of the

Oar-some donation By Adam Poulopoulos Blenheim Rowing Club are basking in the glow of a hefty grant which they hope will help them continue to produce top rowers. The club has been awarded $9300 by Sport Tasman, the biggest of 11 sums of money awarded to organisations around Marlborough in the latest round of funding. The money will go towards a $34500 project, kicking off later this year, aiming to introduce 80 new rowers to the club, and getting 80 per cent of them competing in regattas. The project would include a learn-to-row programme at Marlborough Boys College, boats, equipment and other expenses. The circuit, on Northbank Road over the Wairau River Bridge, will be christened at an open day on Friday. The track includes jumps, sawdust pits, berms, a start straight and a separate minis track. The money for the $14000 track was raised by the club, and donated by a series of local businesses. Club President Michael Holland said a lot of people had contributed
