Wainui Plunket baby meets Prince George

By Dan Whitfield Eight-month-old Levi Dawson Birch and his mum, Tui Funaki, have a royal story to tell their friends following last week’s chanceof-a-life-time meeting little Prince George, as well as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. “It was such a surprise. I couldn’t believe how real it was that we were going to meet members of the royal family,” Tui says. Local RSA seek donations this Red Poppy Day By Dan Whitfield Wainuiomata Valley RSA members will be out exchanging distinctive red poppies for donations this Thursday as part of the annual Poppy Day Appeal. So far 11 people will be out in the community collecting for the appeal, with the Wainuiomata Community Library, local Westpac and ANZ banks, and Clive’s Clinic setting up a collection bucket on site. The RSA Poppy Day appeal is a nationwide fundraiser that raises funds to support veterans as well as ex-service people and their families in need. A spokesperson from the Royal New Zealand Returned and Ser-

vices’ Association tells the Wainuiomata News the poppy is a reminder of sacrifices made – both past and present. Poppies were the first flowers that grew in the battlefields of Flanders in Belgium during World War One and are a symbol of remembrance and hope. The annual fundraiser has been a part of the New Zealand calendar since 1922, making it one of the oldest nationwide appeals. Wainuiomata appeal organiser Jane Chamberlain says it is an important day that needs the support of the community. “We have to remember this is the only time to raise funds for welfare services that returned servicemen and their families rely on,” Mrs

 Donations can also be made by texting ‘POPPY’ to 4462 to donate $3; or via www.givealittle.co.nz/org/RNZRSA.

Wainuiomata’s royal connection Continued from page 1 The Wainuiomata mother says she was taking her son to child care when she got a phone call from Plunket saying they had been chosen to meet the royal couple and baby George. Levi was born at 11.48pm on July 21, 2013, and as his birthday was 12 minutes before Prince George’s, the Wainuiomata mother and son team met the criteria for the royal meeting. Families were also chosen for being first time parents. Levi and Tui were one of ten families that were chosen for this once in a lifetime opportunity. The Plunket parent support group was held at Government House on Wednesday morning with babies all close in age to George taking part in the easy-going meet and greet. “We’ve got some awesome

stories to tell now. It was amazing getting to meet them and see the young prince,” Tui says. Levi got up close with Prince George, playing with his hands and communicating in a sort of baby, goo goo-gah gah, language with him.

C h a mb erla i n says. Poppy Day is usually held each year on the Friday before Anzac Day, however in 2014 it falls on Good Friday. This year Poppy Day will be held on Thursday April 17. Members of the community are encouraged to donate towards the RSA’s most important appeal of the year. Mrs Chamberlain asks for the support of residents, saying if you see a collector please donate.

Although the two babies will be raised in two completely different places that are miles apart, Tui says families had plenty to discuss with the royals especially how Prince George was eating and whether he was on to solids. Tui, 30, is a solo mother living and raising Levi in Wainuiomata, and believed she is blessed to have had the opportunity. She is also thankful for the help and support she gets from her family - especially nana Tina Birch, who also got to tag along and meet Prince William and his wife, Kate, as well as baby George. “It was such a great privilege to be able to have this opportunity. It’s a wonderful experience,” Tui says. Last Wednesday was also

a special moment for Tui, as she was born in the same year (1983) that Princess Diana and Prince Charles with William came to New Zealand. “Now my son has a special connection the same as I did,” Tui says. Levi’s middle name – Dawson – is in respect of a Wainuiomata Komatua. Plunket New Zealand president Tristine Clark says it is exciting to be a part of the visit. “Becoming a new parent and raising children brings great changes and challenges. It [was] wonderful for Their Royal Highnesses to experience what it’s like to talk to other parents going through the same experiences,” Ms Clark says.

Pay goes up for local employees By Dan Whitfield The minimum wage has risen to $14.25 an hour for most adult-aged workers around the country. Prior to the change, the rate was set at $13.75 an hour, which many said was not enough; but not Ferne Mckinley. The year 12 Wainuiomata High School student has been working at Joes Cook Wainuiomata for the past six months and says she has enjoyed every moment of it. “I never really saw an issue with the pay...I was just happy to be working really. It is great that the minimum wage has gone up,” Ferne says. “This is my first real job. It’s really good working there,” she says. As part of the change, the starting-out and training minimum wages have also increased -from $11 an hour to $11.40 an hour, which is 80 per cent of the adult minimum wage. National Party labour minister Simon Bridges says setting these wage rates represents a careful balance between protecting low paid workers and ensuring jobs are not lost. “The increase balances the needs of both businesses and workers and will have minimal impact on the wider labour

market and inflationary pressures,” Mr Bridges says. “This increase will keep the minimum wage at around 50 per cent of the average hourly rate, which is the highest rate in the OECD,” he says. The country’s current leaders announced Government is firmly focused on growing the economy and boosting incomes - creating opportunities to help grow more jobs in New Zealand, for New Zealanders. Prior to working at Joes Cook on Queen St, the young employee volunteered her time at the Wainuiomata Community Library. Ferne tells the Wainuiomata News that working at the restaurant is like working with family. Her brother, Joel McKinley, has recently started working in the local community at McDonalds. He is one of a number of employees who will allegedly start on the new wage. Lower Hutt Mayor Ray Wallace believes the increase is a good idea. “My concern is the long term job opportunities available to our people,” Mr Wallace says. The new minimum wage rates came into effect on Tuesday, April 1.

inbriefnews Business Breakfast postponed The third Wainuiomata Business Breakfast for 2014 will be happening next month due to the last Friday of April being Anzac Day. The guest speaker for the event is yet to be announced however, organisers are excited after the success of the previous two breakfasts. For more information, visit www. wainuiomatanz.com.

Large event comes to Wainuiomata Multiple loops of bush track and six hours of adrenaline-packed mountain biking action will make up the Wainuiomata 6hr Wurldz in May. The event will take place on tracks located in two valleys above Parkway on the eastern side of Wainuiomata Hill. Participants can enter the event as individuals or in teams, and organisers say it will be mountain biking heaven. Registrations are now open and further information can be found on the website: w6w.co.nz. The Wainuiomata 6hr Wurldz will be held May 18.

Date secured for June event A date has been secured and the route changed for the inaugural Hutt City Council King of the Hill later this year. While the Hutt City Council’s King of the Hill event was originally set to run on January 19, the date has finally been locked in for the Queen’s Birthday weekend – allowing residents to have a few more months to train before the event on June 1. Organised by the council’s leisure active unit, the climb

will see changes to the route focused more on Wainuiomata. Council spokesperson Emma McCleary says a decision was made to make the event more centred on Wainuiomata, seeing the event start and finish at the Queen St reserve. The event will now see locals run or walk from the reserve to the top of Wainuiomata Hill and back down to the reserve. Ms McCleary says it is going to be a great event with Wainuiomata and Hutt Valley-

based competitors as well as members of council. The event also has an opportunity for Wainuiomata residents to become either the king or queen of the hill – with a throne set to be in place at the top of the hill for competitors to pose for a photo. Prizes will also be awarded to the first people to finish the event as well as the best themed team and best dressed king and queen of the day. Council has a long term goal

to turn the hill climb into an iconic event similar to Wellington’s Round the Bays. Lanes on eastern hills side of the Hill Rd will be closed to traffic and a system will be managed for vehicles on western lanes. Residents interested in taking part can register at www. kingofthehill.co.nz. Cost of registering for the event has also been halved with prices for adults dropped to $10, children $5 and under 5s free.

The Swiss brought an age-old Easter egg tradition to Wainuiomata recently and it does not involve chocolate. More than 20 adults and children from the Swiss Society of New Zealand got together over Easter weekend at the Moores Valley Road clubhouse to dye as many hard-boiled Easter eggs as possible before the religious holiday. Five-year-old Olivia Leamy, whose mother moved to New Zealand from Geneva in 2000, was clear about the best part of Easter. “That you get eggs!” she says. Creating leaf-patterned Easter eggs with natural dyes is a Swiss tradition that many of the parents remember doing as children in Switzerland. “When I was growing up it wasn’t about the chocolate egg,” society member Petra Press says. “It was all about breaking the [dyed] egg

Jo Goddard says she is certain someone in Wainuiomata is poisoning animals with antifreeze, after multiple occasions of family pets forced to be put down or worse found dead. The Wainuiomata resident recently told the Wainuiomata News that it was an urgent matter that the public needed to be made aware of. A few weeks ago, Ms Goddard found one of her cats, Tilly, dead. This was followed by two more of her cats, Tigger and Salem, having to be put down recently due to similar circumstances. Ms Goddard says it is terrible that someone is doing this, “it is animal cruelty; it has to stop.” The local pet lover says that in her street, two cats and one dog had

died of antifreeze poisoning in the space of five days. “The dog and cat that died lived across the road from us. We know that these animals are being deliberately targeted because the dog did not leave its section prior to being poisoned and our cats did not enter into the dog’s property,” Ms Goddard says. “We both live on opposite sides of the road, so there is no way of cross contamination,” she says. While police were made aware of past events and have said they would monitor the situation, the Parkway resident is scared for the safety of her other cats. She feels that the issue has become quite serious, which is why she moved herself and two daughters – along with pets – out of the family home.

Police say if an offender was identified and prosecuted for cruelty to animals, the person could face up to five years in jail or a $100,000 fine. Both Police and SPCA are working to identify the source of poisoning in the area. Residents are encouraged to watch their pets closely over the next few weeks in case further incidents of poisoning should take place.

and eating it on Easter Sunday,” she says. Mrs Press recalls being sent out by her grandmother to collect the traditionally used wiesenkerbel (cow parsley), found in Switzerland from April. Wellington’s club this year adapted its method to New Zealand by using a Kiwi icon – the fern. Smooth and shiny patterned eggs are made by wrapping leaves around the eggs and securing them using string and hosiery. The eggs are then hard-boiled in either brown onion or walnut skins, developing a deep mahogany or brown colouring and imprinting the leaf pattern. Mrs Press says the Wellington Swiss Club often meet at the Wainuiomata clubhouse to carry out traditional customs. “We’re trying to pass on some on the traditions in a fun way,” she says. At any one time there are about 100 members in the club, which caters to both Swiss immigrants and combined SwissNZ families.

Buggy walk and Easter eggs Hutt Playcentre Association is inviting local parents to take part in an Easter Buggy Walk today. Parents and caregivers with young children are welcome to join the association’s staff and other members as they walk the Gums Loop Track in Wainuiomata at 9.30am. The association’s Isobel Franklin says the purpose of the event is to raise awareness amongst the Wainuiomata public about Playcentre and all the fun things we do together. “Our two centres in Wainuiomata are struggling with membership numbers so we are trying to raise their public profile,” Ms Franklin says. The plan is for everyone to meet at the car park near Hine Rd at 9.30am. Ms Franklin says the track is buggy friendly, mostly flat and will take about one-and-a-half hours; including a morning tea break. “Celebrate autumn, end of term, Easter and meet your local Playcentre families. [There are] Easter eggs for all finishers,” she says.  Are you doing anything over Easter? Take a pic and send us your snaps! We would love to see what you get up to. Email daniel@wsn.co.nz..

Greens come to Lower Hutt Green Party MPs Catherine Delahunty and Holly Walker spoke to concerned residents about how schools around Wainuiomata and the Hutt Valley as community can help others around the region play an even greater role. The idea of the event was to get members of the community engaging with families and ensuring a great education is accessible to all children. The green MPs address the public at the Lower Hutt Tramping Club on Tuesday.

ROYALS LEAVE TODAY: The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, and royal baby George.

Farewell to the royals Wainuiomata and Hutt Valley residents have a chance to see Prince William, Kate Middleton and Prince George today as part of the last day of the royal visit. Details released by Government House last week outlined a drive through Willis Street and a walk with the mayor through Civic Square; finishing up at about 12pm. Despite the overwhelming interest in the royals, many believe the information about the above tour could be too much information. The New Zealand Herald last Thursday quoted the royal visits office media manager Allen Walley saying the announcements are the result of months of planning and did not breach

any regulations. “There is no problem with it, all of this was planned well in advance, it was signalled to Kensington Palace and it was cleared with New Zealand police. Sending out the routes and public meeting places and so forth has been the norm with every royal visit to New Zealand for the last 30 years.” The royal trio will drive down Willis St and onto Mercer St, stopping outside Civic Square. They will then walk with the mayor publically through Civic Square. Prince William, Kate Middleton and Prince George will then be driven down Jervois Quay and around the bays to Wellington Airport.

Another fundraiser for Zariah Members of the staff at Te Atiawa nui Tonu Te Kohanga Reo Tuarua Child Education have also set themselves the challenge of shaving their hair in support of local little girl Zariah Kahui-Riddler. The head shave is set to take place on Thursday 17 at 10.30am.

Members of the community based early child education and care service will be shaving their head raising funds for Child Cancer Foundation and supporting children living with the disease. It has about 40 children enrolled and is located on Moohan St.

Shout out to the Royals

Dear Ed, I read with interest and delight in last week’s paper that the Wainuiomata Valley RSA is to be reformed. What good news! It would be a real shame for an organisation with such history to disappear. And the news comes just in time for Anzac

Dear Ed, My my, what a fuss over the Royals! I know they are great and deserve our upmost respect, however let’s be honest - they are just people, the same as you and I. I feel for them; it must be hard being constantly on the go, meeting with this person then that person, being here and then there. Especially

Bright frustrations over wasted power By Dan Whitfield Street lights in the Parkway suburb of Wainuiomata have been on 24/7 for the past three weeks, leaving a number of residents concerned over who is paying for the wasted electricity. Karamu St homeowner Brian Smith has so far expressed his concerns to staff at Hutt City Council and Wellington Electricity Lines Limited, however is now wanting to know why they have been left on for so long. Wellington Electricity is the distribution company that manages the poles, wires and equipment that deliver electricity to homes in the area. Mr Smith says he has been told a number of stories about why the FRUSTRATED: Brian Smith wonders why the lights have been lights have been left on, one being left. Photo: Dan Whitfield because the nearby substation had

packed up. He says the street lights have been on non-stop, day and night, for about three weeks. “It’s poor. Someone could have told people what was going on and it would have been okay. No one knew what was happening,” Mr Smith says. When Mr Smith tried to find out why the lights had been on for so long, he says that all he got was answering machines and receptionists saying they would pass on his information to the right person. “It’s pathetic...I still don’t know who is paying for the wasted electricity. By the time it is fixed they will have been on for a month,” he says. Hutt City Council do not look after street lighting in Wainuiomata, and senior communications advisor Selina Simcox says it is

likely the lights have been kept on while they were testing the circuits for faults. Contractors for Wellington Electricity are set to fix the problem transformer this week, allowing the street lights to be put back on to the normal lighting routine. A spokesperson from the electricity provider tells the Wainuiomata News there had been a fault with at the transformer substation on Wetherby Grove and that it was safer to connect the lights to the main supply that provides homes with power all the time. “There have been people working around the area but we didn’t know what had happened or when it would be fixed,” Mr Smith says.  Send the Wainuiomata News your opinion. Email daniel@wsn.co.nz.

Bearing down on Baring Head this year By Colin Ryder Treasurer of Friends of Baring Head Readers may recall that the Greater Wellington Council purchased Baring Head in 2010 and added it to the East Harbour Regional Park. Since then, a significant amount of work has taken place. There is a new car park down by

the beach, a toilet installed at the bridge car park, picnic tables and seating sited around the nicely signposted track and the historic pump house looks fantastic with its new paint job and roof. The Friends of Baring Head was formed late in 2010 to help the Council make the most of this new asset by acting as a vehicle for community involvement and sourcing outside

funding. Already, we have assisted with most of the projects mentioned earlier as well as protecting banded dotterel colonies on the beach, beach clean-ups, planting, weeding, small mammal monitoring and pest trapping. More importantly, however, we have been talking to the Council about what needs to happen to make the most of the potential offered by the property, and how the Friends

and the community can help. Currently this involves an interpretation strategy, the restoration and future management of the lighthouse keeper’s houses compound and the implementation of a comprehensive biodiversity action plan. Obviously, there’s going to be a lot happening and there will be a swag of opportunities for you to be involved.

Easter and School Holiday You can’t beat Wellington on a good day!

Easter holidays full of activities With the Easter school holidays beginning on Thursday, students of all ages will be looking for something to do over the two week break. Last week, Hutt City Council announced the opening hours for all of its libraries in and around the Hutt Valley over Easter – as well as Anzac Day. All libraries will be closed on Good Friday, Easter Sunday and the following Monday. From Tuesday, April 22, to Thursday, April 24, the libraries will briefly return to normal opening hours. Anzac Day will see libraries close once again, with normal hours returning on April 26. The Whittaker’s Big Egg Hunt is also on this weekend – the first event of its kind in the southern hemisphere – inviting the public to find 100 giant eggs created by New Zealand artists and designers, all in

support of Starship. Eggs have been hidden across the country, including many dotted around Wellington CBD, since March 21. Members of the public will be able to join the egg hunt either for fun or to compete for the grand prize, which is under-wraps. For more information on the hunt, visit thebigegghunt.co.nz. An Easter Theme Roller Disco will be held on Friday April 18 at the Upper Hutt Roller Skating Club. The disco is for all ages; take the family, or have an easter date! Running from 6:30pm to 8:30pm, $7 per person. Door sales only. The skating club is located at 4A Railway Avenue. The Lower Hutt Riverbank market will still be running over the weekend, selling fresh fruit, vegetables, and produce, inlcuding meats, breads, and other items. Stock up for a yummy family meal. Crafts, clothing, and nick-nacks are also sold. The market runs from 8am to 2pm every Saturday.

This summer was not one of our better ones, however autumn and winter can often give nice weather to get out on the water. Weather conditions on Wellington’s harbour and coast can be very changeable, check the forecast before going out and watch the weather while on the water. All boats, including kayaks and stand up paddleboards must have a properly fitting lifejacket for each person on board and a means of communication for emergencies. On vessels under 6 metres long the lifejackets should be worn. Avoid big ships; within Wellington harbour keep clear of large ships. There is a link on our website, (look under Commercial services/ Centreport) that shows the recommended tracks of the ships in and out of the harbour. If you hear 5 short blasts on a ships horn, they are getting concerned about a vessel in their way, make sure it isn’t you. They cannot easily stop or avoid you. Now daylight saving has finished check your navigation lights if you might be out at night. Make sure your lights are in the correctly positioned and that they work when needed. If entering or leaving the harbour at night call Wellington Harbour Radio on VHF Ch14, to tell them who you are and where you are going. They will inform you of any other vessels on the harbour and other vessels will hear what you are doing as well. Have a look in the Apps store for your smart phone for MarineMate, a free NZ wide app with local boating information, such as boat ramps and waterski lanes and other useful safety information. For more further information or a copy of the Navigation & Safety Bylaws go to our website www.gw.govt.nz/harbours or contact us on 830 4160. To report unsafe boating behaviour call us on 388 7795.

MINUTES WITH: The Easter Bunny Deliverer of chocolate and happiness What is your favourite food? Carrots, lettuce (with a bit of hummus and dip as a treat), polished off with a few chocolate eggs and hot cross buns for dessert! Unbeatable. Although I need to watch my waistline...

What makes you smile? Seeing children and adults running around looking for eggs. Everyone comes together as a family. It makes me hip and hop with joy!

What’s your pet hate? When siblings fight over eggs. Chocolate is only chocolate. Sharing is caring!

Your favoured holiday destination?

Who would you invite to dinner?

I have a lucky job - I get to globe hop and visit many amazing places on earth. But I would love to go to some African countries and hang out with families there.

The Fox (What Does the Fox Say) for its party vibes, Gordon Ramsay for his cooking, Demi Lovato for her cute fun, Jesus, and my love interest. I’m not saying who that is...

What’s your favourite music?

What’s next on your wish list?

At the moment, it’s Happy by Pharrell Williams. It never fails to get my tail bopping!

What is one thing Wainuiomata News readers would be surprised to know about you? One year, I was overcome with gluttony and ate an entire packet of easter eggs with the foil still on. I don’t recommend it.

For families to realise that Easter is about love, compassion, and time together.

A saying you like to live by? “Every morning you have two choices: continue to sleep with your dreams, or wake up and chase them.”

New technology a pick-me up for Kiwis By Dan Whitfield As the winter months creep closer, a new piece of technology recently launched in New Zealand is set to benefit hundreds of Kiwis around the region that are living in damp flatting situations. The Solair space heater, created by entrepreneurs Tyler Byers and Lisa McLaren, uses new technology which has already gained traction across Northern Europe, helping fix cold, damp homes by adding an injection of warm, dry air to displace this; and allowing people to make sure their homes are up to scratch. Benefits of the heater include no ongoing running costs as it uses solar power to heat

to houses, as well as boosting renewable energy. Now that it has been launched in New Zealand, it has been picked up for the Wellington Smart Energy Challenge. As part of the challenge, the goal of the Solair team is to raise $6,000 by May 16 - with each dollar set to be matched by Wellington City Council. Money raised will be used to install the heaters in low income households, schools, student flats, or community buildings in Wellington throughout the 2014 winter. “During this time we will be creating awareness and community engagement around the issues associated with cold, damp housing and energy poverty in

Wellington. The results of our research and testing will provide an opportunity to consider options to develop the base model further,” Ms McLean says. “In the medium to long term, we would like to get a contract with a low-income housing provider to get the units out in bulk to those that need them. At the same time we would investigate developing a distribution and retail channel to sell the units as an on the shelf product,” she says. For a country with increasing numbers of people falling into fuel poverty, Mr Byers and Ms McLaren believe the heating units can provide relief to those in need. Easter Church Services 2014 St Patricks Parish HOLY THURSDAY—17th April Mass of the Lord's Supper 7.30pm GOOD FRIDAY—18th April Stations of the Cross—10.00am Celebration of the Lord's Passion—3.00pm HOLY SATURDAY—19th April Easter Vigil and Mass of Resurrection—7.30pm

Easter Sunday is celebrated all around the world with hot cross buns and chocolate easter eggs, with many going looking for eggs left by an Easter Bunny. However on Easter Sunday, Christians celebrate the resur-

rection of the Lord, Jesus Christ. Christians believe, according to the Bible, that Jesus was raised from the dead three days after his death on the cross. The death of Jesus Christ is remembered on Good Friday; the Friday

just before Easter. Through his death, burial, and resurrection, Jesus paid the price for our sin so that all who believe in him may have a relationship with God through Jesus, and eternal life with Him.

Wainuiomata come close but no cigar By Aaron Meredith, Whitireia Journalism Student

HANDS ON: Cory Draper clears the ball from the Ruck. Photo: Aaron Meredith

Wainuiomata suffered another defeat over the weekend, despite having a much improved effort on last week. At the end of the day it was a lack of discipline that proved the difference at William Jones Park, as well as Upper Hutt firstfive Liam Berry’s boot kicking multiple penalties for his team. Upper Hutt scored first with an early penalty into the game however, John Monu managed to scored a try after the home side strung together some good phases. The opposition’s first-five then added two more penalties to the scoreboard, giving Upper

Hutt a 9-7 halftime lead - after Wainuiomata blew a final first half chance to take the lead. In the second half, Wainuiomata wing Tyler Tane traded penalties with Berry until Upper Hutt’s lock Sam Walsley scored a try taking the score to 17-13. Wainuiomata then applied some decent pressure on their Upper Hutt counterparts however, it was too late in the game with some crucial handling errors and penalties costing them another win at the end of the 80 minutes. Following the loss to Upper Hutt this weekend, the Wainuiomata side moves down the table into eleventh spot after only playing three rounds of the 2014 Swindale Shield competition.

In other matches on Saturday, the senior first side lost to Upper Hutt as well. The final score was 45-5 and the game was played at Mary Crowther Park. Wainuiomata’s women’s team also went down 56-12 to Norths, playing away at the opposing team’s home turf in Porirua. The local premier team now heads into a double play round, with two games next weekend. It will face Marist St Pats at William Jones Park on Good Friday, followed by Petone on Easter Monday. The new drainage system installed at William Jones Park earlier this year struggled to cope with the game, still resulting in a cut up field over the weekend’s sporting action.

Victories for Ulalei teams A double victory was recorded by Ulalei Wainuiomata Netball over the weekend as two of its premier teams won against teams from the greater Hutt Valley. In the first game of the weekend, the premier one team for Ulalei came up against Petone Rugby League and won, 50-49. Club president Karen Sagaga this was an absolute thriller of a game. “Ulalei were down by four goals with four minutes to go. However, cool heads and determination forced a couple of crucial turnovers finished off by the shooters,” Karen says.

EPIC WINNING: Wainuiomata Colts players celebrate after winning in the weekend.

Wainuiomata Colts hold off Upper Hutt By Dan Whitfield Wainuiomata Colts held off its Upper Hutt counterparts to register a win in wet and rainy conditions on Saturday. The game started off poorly with a penalty given away right from the home side’s kick off due to a player in front of the kicker. Both teams traded penalties throughout the game but mainly in the first 10 minutes, with Upper Hutt scoring the first points – 3-nil. From there Wainuiomata had control off the ball, despite a few handling errors in the wet conditions which was expected by both sides. When the Colts side was on the attack, inside the Upper Hutt five meters, Rocky Maualuga stormed over to score the first try of the match. The conversion was missed as it was kicked into a stiff wind – five points to three. Wainui scored number of tries to be up 22-10 at half time. With the wind at our backs Wai-

nuiomata showed more control and a bit more passion to score 28 unanswered points in the second half. Upper Hutt’s lonely try came from a Wainuiomata mistake, but despite efforts the opposite side was well out of the game by this point. Leading from the front with a very strong game was captain Alesana Mene with notable mentions for Aaron McKee, Peter Tunupopo and Fa’avea Lemau who all three scored two tries each over the weekend. Wainuiomata had a dominate forward pack and a strong back line which helped the side towards its win. With a bye for Easter weekend, the team will go away and work hard at trainings before a road trip to Rahui Club in Otaki on April 26 for the next game. Wainuiomata’s Jordan Heketa and Bleize Ruri also score themselves a try at the weekend.

“We scored the winning goal right on the final whistle,” she says. The second game of the weekend saw Ulalei verse Maidstone in the premier three grade. Despite a slow start, the win ended up going to the Wainuiomata side; seeing them win, 29-17. “Ulalei were down by two at half time. A strong third quarter saw Ulalei take a five goal lead into the final quarter, running away with the game in the last quarter for a convincing win,” Karen says. She says the results this week were great and allowed the club to have victories for both teams.
