Capital wowed by WOW The frocks are off and the clean-up from the party has started – the annual World of WearbleArt show closed last week with record ticket sales. More than 53,000 tickets were sold to this year’s 15 shows, up by 13 per cent on last year’s sales. WOW founder Dame Suzie Moncrieff says this year’s crop of shows during the three week season were a huge success. “Wellington continues to embrace WOW and delight our audience with the excitement and buzz that fills the city,” she says. WOW, which has been based in Wellington for ten years, added an extra weekend of
shows this year to meet extra demand. Chair of Wellington City Council’s Economic Growth and Arts Committee councillor Jo Coughlan says the cities investment in WOW is paying off. “In 2012 we signed a nine year partnership deal with WOW, and since then the show has continued to grow, providing clear benefits for the Wellington economy,” she says. “As well as bringing tens of thousands of visitors to the city, pumping money into our retail and hospitality sectors, this year WOW employed more than 500 people in Wellington.

A highlight will be the Texas Chainsaw Massacre room, Richard says. “The kids quite like it and get a good scare,” he says. “I normally get into it as well and scare the mothers. It’s a bit of fun.” Michelle says she normally starts working on the house four months before Halloween. While she lives elsewhere she says her parents do not mind their home being filled with fake blood and decapitated body parts. Fog, scary music and plenty of screams will fill the Salek Street house in Rongotai on Friday, October 31 for Halloween and the next night.

Movie nights, a kids’ photo exhibition and now online auctions are how an Evan’s Bay childcare centre are fundraising the cash to replace their playground matting. Centre assistant manager Courtney Sherman says 20 different items, donated by businesses, will be on TradeMe from today and available for the public to bid on. “We need our outdoor matting to be replaced which will cost about $7,000” she says. “It was last replaced eight years ago.” The kids have fewer restrictions on their play when they are on the playground, Courtney says.

St Mark’s Church School principal Kent Favel says this is the third year in a row the school achieved a 100 per cent distinction mark in their trinity exams. “It’s simply outstanding,” Kent says. “It’s a team effort.” The exams involve an assessor visiting the

A Strathmore-based author, who has written a book about an elderly theremin player, has been nominated for an Australian book prize. Tracy Farr’s fi rst novel the Life and Times of Lena Gaunt has been shortlisted for the 2014 Barbara Jefferis award which has a $55,000 prize. The award is given to novels by Australian authors that portray women in an empowering light. “Feminism is and always has been fundamental to me,” Tracy says. “I’m a feminist, and I can’t imagine not writing from that place.” The former research scientist, who moved to New Zealand from Perth

Kent says each year group get involved in putting on a different show, from behind the scenes to performing on stage. “The kids just love it.” The year seven and eight students spent term three working on a production of Grease, while the year six’s did a western, year fives the Pied Piper, year fours Goldilocks and the younger students worked on class performances. “The children are always really excited to hear how they went,” Kent says. “It takes up a huge chunk of term three.” The students develop confidence and a number of skills including team work and speaking in public, Kent says. “We’ve got a parent whose child has been involved in this for the first time and they said to me he loved it. “It’s about giving your best and it’s about working in a group. “We encourage the children to do their best.” Kate Parker, 11, says her favourite part of the examinations was being on stage. Paris Povey, 12, says the students really deserved it because of the work they put in.

Sudesh makes his father proud Russian, Hindi, Urdu, English, Kashmiri and Panjabi – those are the six languages written and spoken by a Kilbirnie man who was born in Kashmir, studied and started a business in Moscow and now runs an export and import business from Wellington. Sudesh Wasoori has recently become a justice of the peace and has spent the past four years volunteering as a budget advisor for the Wellington Citizen’s Advice Bureau. Being involved in the community is in the blood for Sudesh, whose father was the general secretary and official spokesperson of the congress party for the state the family lived in. During a trip to Russia and Germany as an official delegate Sudesh’s father visited Moscow and was impressed enough that he soon sent his son there to study engineering. Sudesh says he was always fascinated by law, but pursued his career in engineering and earned a doctorate degree.
“It was good,” Sudesh says. “I have still got a great feeling towards Russians for the reason that they are very intellectual people.” During his time in Moscow he recalls being impressed when seeing most people carrying books while travelling on public transport. While in Moscow Sudesh says he started an importing and exporting business In 1996 Sudesh got engaged to his now-wife Veena and once they got married a trip to New Zealand for their honeymoon would lead to a more permanent move in 1997. “We came here and my wife liked the place,” he says. “Initially it was hard for me to come from one part of the world to another but finally I adopted the country.” Sudesh says while he likes his work his real enjoyment in life is helping people as a qualified budget advisor for the Citizens Advice Bureau. “In the last few years I have seen so many vulnerable clients,” he says. “Twenty to 30 per cent of the people who

come to me are in tears.” The biggest problem he sees while volunteering is the harm done by finance companies, he says. “Finance companies are completely ripping people off,” Sudesh says. “People don’t have a basic idea of what they’re signing.” Sudesh says he wanted to become a justice of the peace to help people. “There’re a lot of things I have
seen, especially in the ethnic communities with what they don’t understand.” “I can explain to people what things mean.” The work the local Indian community, in particular Wellington Indian Sports Club, do to help people inspired him to get involved and do his part, Sudesh says. He says his wife Veena has been a great support in helping him to do his community work.

Happy to see old friends Dear Ed, It was lovely to see Pasi (Partying like they used to, October 6). When we were younger we followed the dance culture here in Wellington and Pasi was a fabulous dancer, and I was lucky enough for him to choose me as his partner on occasions. I had not heard about him and often wondered whether he was still in Wellington.
My eldest son and Pasi were class mates at Wellington Boys. It was great to see Cliff and Betty also, as Betty and I were Wellington technical College (Wellington High) pupils together and we both have an interest in horse racing. Happy Birthday to Pasi and Cliff. Heather Bevan, Island Bay
Dear Ed, I can’t help feeling intrigued about the work going on at the corner of Coutts Street and Onepu Road (Kilbirnie). Currently there is a van parked half in and out of the ‘shop’. Is that for a garage, or for easy access to building tools? That site has had many re-brandings but the one I remember fondly is when it was the Rendez Vous Café. It felt like going into someone’s home – there was a piano along one wall and a feeling that it may have become quite a lively place to be in the evenings. It is a strange phenomenon, but it sometimes seems that whenever a long-running business shuts up shop, that its successors never last very long. I certainly hope this won’t happen with the High Tea Café opposite, which was for years a kind of antique shop before becoming a kind of op shop. I am sure other readers would remember what these premises were used for long

Dear Ed, what a fantastic idea put forward by Judith Nathan (October 13) regarding the parks on Ellice Street. I also have a simple idea to reduce congestion at the Mount Vic tunnel. I read recently that the City Council was going to upgrade the Pirie St bus only tunnel at some exorbitant cost to the ratepayers.
It should be quite simple to widen this tunnel to two lanes and open it up to all traffic. This would not only ease the congestion at the tunnel but would bring more traffic through Hataitai which would enliven this suburb. Skye Anderson, Mount Victoria
Cycleway a waste of time Dear Ed, I am against the cycleway. Island Bay already has a cycleway which works perfectly well. It is outrageous that WCC plan to spend $2,900,000 of Ratepayers money on a cycleway to go from Shorland Park to Wakefield Park. The one section of The Parade that could be considered unsafe for cyclists is the shopping centre but that section is to be excluded from the cycleway. Every job has cost over runs so we can expect the cost to escalate. No one would object to spending the money on creating a cycleway around the bays or to make Adelaide Rd or the city safer for cyclists but this is just wasteful
use of rates. As a recreational cyclist, I have cycled down The Parade countless times and never once felt unsafe. The intention of WCC to narrow the width of The Parade to the same width as Adelaide Rd is appalling. This iconic road, which is probably the safest road in Wellington for cyclists, will be ruined, pedestrians will be put at risk with the cycleway crossing the footpath to go behind bus stops and passengers will risk being hit by cyclists when they open car doors. Racing towards Wellington’s history By Dan Whitfield Despite living in Mount Cook, Graeme Davidson is focused on getting everyone living in the Wellington region involved in his new race – The Great Wellington Hunt. He hopes that through being part of the Amazing Race-styled event, people will be able to better answer the question, how well do you know Wellington? “I was born and raised in Wellington, [but] a friend visiting from abroad was asking me about the city’s history and I didn’t have the answers. I did some research and it has evolved to become The Great Wellington Hunt,” says Graeme.
The event is set to run on November 2 and will involve teams solving clues and racing to reach various locations over the course of the afternoon. Each of the 14 locations, one of which is the statue of John Plimmer and his dog Fritz in central Wellington, will have a clue that people will have to solve before moving on. Something that was a must for Graeme was having clues or questions that would not be able to be answered by simply typing it into Google. He says people taking part will have to put their knowledge to the test no matter what. “It’s something that Wellington doesn’t have and from
talking to people that want to do it, it’s something they are interested in,” Graeme says. “It’s going to be great educating people,” he says. Busy café celebrates birthday By Sam Duff If popular Newtown cafe Baobab were a human being, the busy business would be celebrating its sixth birthday with cake, balloons and party poppers. Instead Baobab owners Rachel and Gabe Johnston celebrated six years in business with a backyard garden bash on Sunday for Newtown locals. Gabe says the couple had both been chefs throughout the world for years and wanted to open their own place where they could envisage themselves wanting to hang-out. “We felt that we had the skills and we felt that we could create a place that would be really good,” he says. “We didn’t know what to expect. There was zero expectation for us. We started fresh. “It is beyond what we ever expected really.” Gabe, who has worked in Australia, Canada, and Scotland, says running the café is hard-work and can be stressful at times. The pair had a six month old son when the café was opened so Gabe says they have always tried to have one person at home and the other

running Baobab. Six months after opening the café Gabe and Rachel, who is from Canada, got married and closed up shop for two weeks. One of the hardest times during the past six years was when Baobab expanded three years ago, Gabe says. “We had a reputation so there was a lot of expectation,” he says. “The first day that we expanded was our busiest day ever. That was the hardest part.”
One of the most enjoyable parts of owning Baobab is the social aspect, Gabe says. “I enjoy meeting people and making friends in the community.” The name Baobab comes from an African tree, he says. “It’s known as the tree of life and it’s a very significant tree. “In Africa people built their villages around them and they’re meeting places. We like to think of ourselves like that.”

Catching the light
As the spring flowers begin to blossom in Kilbirnie a new florist is making her mark. Philippa Anderson, the new owner of Scheherazade, says she loves everything about floristry from the flowers to designing pretty things. Originally from Lower Hutt, Philippa says she has been a florist for about 12 years. “I started off at a little shop on Lambton Quay,” she says. “I love working with customers. Everyone is so friendly and lovely.” The Maupuia resident says her favourite flower is the peony rose. “I would say that but then the new season comes and I would say all the lilies,” she says. “I don’t think there is a flower I don’t like.” Philippa purchased the business from Cheryl Williams who owned Scheherazade for 27 years. “She was awesome,” Philippa says.

Fair fun for Island Bay By Sam Duff Silent auctions, grocery grabs and fun games – the youngsters of Island Bay School have been busy preparing for their annual school fair. Chair of the Home and School committee Sally Garrity says the fair has become well known in the area having been held annually for about 40 years. Highlights of this year’s fair will be a New World grocery grab, a silent auction, crafts and preserves, Sally says. “We do everything ourselves,” she says. “There’re lots of great

things.” Deputy Principal Deborah Fenton says it is a great fundraiser and this year some of the money raised will go towards renovating the top block playground and increasing the amount of technology in classrooms. Students get quite involved in the fair by running various activities such as the duck hunt, Deborah says. “It teaches them that they’re part of a bigger picture,” she says. The Island Bay School fair is on Saturday November 1 from 11am till 2pm at Island Bay School.
Saving the kids from lunch wrap found there were a lot of products on the market that were through away products.” Anna says her and her network of mothers that work for Munch part-time make about 200 reusable lunch wraps a week. “I don’t think there’s anyone else out there doing this.” What started out as a blog two years ago has turned into an online store and now Anna is preparing to hold the second annual Munch awards. The awards are to raise awareness of the good and the bad of the kid’s food industry, she says. Anna says she does get quite busy between raising her three kids and running Munch.

An Island Bay woman and a group of fellow mothers have banded together to spread the message about eco-friendly products for kids. Anna Bordignon, a former commercial lawyer and mother of three youngsters, started Munch Cooking two years ago. “I wanted to do something that would contribute towards the community,” Anna says. From cook books to reusable lunch wrap, Anna says Munch is all about making and marketing eco-friendly products for kids. “We’re trying to move people away from plastic,” she says. “I

Snowy Hey my name is Snowy and I am a west highland terrier – affectionately known as Westies. My breed originated in Scotland and was used to hunt foxes and rodents. Players make their mark By Sam Duff When the New Zealand 1st XV rugby schools side beat Australia and Fiji recently three boys from Scots College were there to tackle, convert and penalty kick their way to victory. Alex Fidow, 17, from the Hutt, Malo Tuitama, 18, from Porirua and school captain TJ Va’a, 18, from Wainuiomata, made up Scots College’s best ever representation on the team. TJ says there is a lot of history wearing the black jersey for the New Zealand schools side. “There’re a couple of All Blacks at the moment who wore this jersey so it’s pretty cool,” he says. New Zealand Schools is made up of up and coming players from around the country and is viewed as the first rung on the high performance ladder of New Zealand rugby. The schools side competed in the International Schools Rugby series at the start of the month against Australia
and Fiji at Porirua Park. The New Zealand side beat-off the visiting teams and took out the competition. TJ says the match against Australia was harder but despite torrential rain at the start eventually New Zealand won 34 to 24. The three youngsters say they were all brought up on rugby so the game is in their blood. “Living in Wainuiomata everyone plays rugby,” TJ says. As they hold the national 1st XV title the Scots side will head to Fukuoka in Japan early next year for the Sanix Secondary Schools Rugby World Cup. TJ says the school team has had a pretty successful season and has worked well together. “It’s just a really good group of guys this year because we’ve played together for a few years,” he says. The next time the young men will play will be at Labour weekend in the Wellington regional sevens competition.
The 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast and the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo are in the sights of a Rongotai College diver who has recently returned from Russia. The Cook Strait News last week caught up with Anton Jenkins, 15, who recently competed in the Junior World Diving Championships in Penza, Russia. “It was pretty mind blowing,” says Anton, who competed in both the one metre and three metre springboard events. The year 10 student says a preliminary round was held from which the top 12 went on to compete in the finals. In the finals Anton says he came ninth in the one metre and eighth in the three metre. “I was really pleased,” he says. “I wasn’t even expecting to make the top 12 so that’s pretty amazing.” The 18 day trip included a few days in London where Anton had the chance to train in the Olympic pool with top diving countries such as China, Great Britain and Mexico. Anton says he started diving at the age of nine when his Mum saw an advertisement at the local pool. “We didn’t realise it was talent spotting thing for a diving squad,” he says. “Me and my sister started going and she stopped but I kept going because I liked it. “I had always done water sports and it was just something different which I hadn’t done before.” Anton says diving tends to rule his life as

he trains seven times a week, about 20 hours all up. In the future Anton says he would really like to compete at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast and the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
