Councillor supports use of 1080 in Hunua Ranges

Scooter park opens

Franklin councillor Bill Cashmore supports the use of 1080 poison in the Hunua Ranges and says he’s looking forward “once again to seeing the red bloom of the rata and, further out, the potential release of kiwi...” Auckland Council’s Regional Strategy and Policy Committee is planning to manage pests in the Hunua Ranges using the controversial sodium fluoroacetate (1080). This is due to increased rat, possum and stoat numbers in the Hunua Ranges parklands and the limitations of current pest control in managing high pest numbers. Bill Cashmore, an Orere farmer, says when 1080 was used in 1994 he was among those neighbours who were “very concerned.” But he says after working with staff most of his concerns were addressed. “We had no problems, no animal deaths and little disruption to property management. What was startling was that summer the ranges were red with rata flowers. We had never seen that degree of nature’s beauty before,” says Bill. It’s no different now, he says. “The pest numbers have risen to alarming levels again. Wallace Narby, a volunteer in the Kiripaka

Maraetai car thefts linked to BP burglary

Scooter ace Taylor Nicholls shows some of his tricks during a demonstration ride to mark the opening of the new Clevedon Scooter Park last Sunday. The 15 year old West Aucklander, who rides for MGP New Zealand, was invited along to show the local Clevedon kids how its done. The scooter park is on Monument Rd in the Clevedon A & P Showgrounds and, despite some hiccups along the way (it was supposed to be ready last December), is now available for use. The project, instigated by Jan Sinclair during her time on the Franklin Local Board, makes use of the concrete pad that was once the foundation for the A & P Show office that has since been moved to the other end of the showgrounds. Auckland Council put on an open day for the kids, to mark the final day of the school holidays, with various rides and a bbq as well as the opportunity for the locals to try some scooter tricks of their (three own. lucky winners already)

Two vehicles stolen from Carlton Crescent In Maraetai in the early hours of Monday morning are believed to have been involved in a burglary at Whitford BP at 2am. Surveillance cameras at the BP picked up a registration number, matching one of the stolen vehicles. Police say four offenders used a heavy instrument to smash through one of the service station front doors, before heading behind the counter in search of cigarettes. “Because of similar breakins and victimisation in the past the owners no longer keep cigarettes there,” says a Police spokesperson. The offenders then picked up a backpack they found behind the counter which they filled with drinks and food from the store. They also made off with the till drawer, which was empty. Police found one of the stolen vehicles abandoned in Whitford Park Rd and the second was later found in Papakura. Forensic evidence has been taken from both vehicles and Police are awaiting forensic results from the crime scene. If you have any information that could help Police with the case please call 261-1300.

2 POHUTUKAWA COAST TIMES (October 17th 2014)

Council has no choice but to adopt nonsense policy THE EDITOR SAYS BY DUNCAN PARDON duncan@pctimes.co.nz Auckland Council has a draft policy on psychoactive substances that will soon be out for consultation . And it’s a wonderful piece of bureaucratic nonsense if ever there was one. But I should hasten to add that this is no fault of Auckland Council. The Council cannot legally prevent the substances being sold once licensed by the Government. All it can do is ensure that the shops selling the products are not near vulnerable communities, schools, or treatment centres for mental health issues or substance abuse. It is expected that the Council policy will be in place ahead of the resumption of licenses being granted by the Government. Committee chair councillor George Wood says: “We have to find a balance between the legal right of the public to purchase licensed products, and the need to ensure

Thanks to boat club

On behalf of the Pohutukawa Coast Community Association I would like to thank the Maraetai Beach Boating Club for hosting our Beach Erosion meeting last week. The boating club is a great venue and community asset. Thanks especially to Rhonda and Alison for all your help and assistance. To be able to look across the Bay and point out the severity of the erosion problem to our visitors was a powerful reminder to them that they were no longer in their Ivory Tower, while at the same time listening to annoyed locals when we spoke out. that they are not on the doorstep of the people who would be most susceptible to harm from their use.” I applaud the effort by Auckland Council to make it as hard as possible to purchase products that should quite simply be banned outright by the Government. Because they are not, we have a Council draft policy with a whole bunch of ridiculous rules as follows: 1. For all areas of Auckland apart from the city centre it is proposed that licences to retail legal psychoactive substances will not be granted in: a) areas of high deprivation b) neighbourhood centres c) within 500m of a school teaching students year seven and above d) within 200m of a school teaching students between years one and six inclusive e) within 500m of the mental health or addiction treatment centre f) within 500m of an existing psychoactive substances retail licence g) areas identified as restricted areas on map 1a and 1b. 2. For the city centre it is proposed that licences to retail legal psychoactive substances will not be granted in:

a) areas of residential deprivation b) within 100m of an existing psychoactive substances retail licence. Council pen-pushers’ eyes must be lighting up in glee with this document! They will be out there with their tape measures ensuring that a legal high shop is 501 metres from a school and not 499. Or writing long reports on just exactly what “areas of high deprivation” actually means. Mind you, it’s pleasing to know that Years 1 to 6 students are only capable or walking 200 metres and not the 500 metres their older brothers and sisters can manage. But perhaps having these shops within 500 metres of an addiction treatment centre might actually be a good idea. It’s less distance for customers to walk from one to the other and will save on bus fares. I’m sure Auckland councillors must be well aware of the absurdity of the whole policy, but what choice do they have? The solution is simple: the sale of substances that have the sole purpose of providing a “high” should be banned by the Government. No exceptions. End of story.

LETTER:

First, form a committee...

The answer to getting the broken Sunkist Bay light fixed (PC Times letters September 19) is really quite straight forward. First form a committee. Put together an action plan along with a risk management strategy, then obtain a resource consent to stage a camp-out with said committee. Maintain an on-site vigil for one week. Monitor hourly the periods the light isn’t working and collect video evidence. Retain copies of such, reporting in triplicate, and carefully file for future possible use. Programme an extraordinary meeting of the authorities responsible for lighting in public places. Submit evidence duly signed by aforementioned Lighting Vigil Committee. This will ensure that all authorities will receive first hand assistance to study various alternatives needed to remedy the broken light problem – but not before reports have been prepared, presented and studied at length by the authorities. Then that outcome must be presented to a specialist panel made up of representatives from all the interested parties for a decision making resolution, put to the vote by the panel, then advertised in this and two other local newspapers for notification of

public consultation. After a suitable timeframe public notification of the strategic process, including danger to public health and proposed timeframes for remedial work to be carried out, will then follow. Finally, when told there is no funding available to fix the light anyway, borrow a cherry picker, sneak out in the dead of night and change the bulb yourself. GEOFF BIGNELL Maraetai Editor’s note: As of early this week Jack Patrick was still trying the get the light fixed!

McNICOL RD, CLEVEDON

LOOKING BACK From the files of the Pohutukawa Coast Times

From the Pohutukawa Coast Times of October 15 1999: • A public bus service in the Clevedon-Kawakawa Bay-Orere district probably isn’t feasible. That’s according to the ARC. Manukau Auckland Regional Councillor Gwen Bull, a Clevedon resident, told this month’s meeting of the Clevedon Community Board that a subsidy of about $17 per passenger would be needed to run such a service because there just weren’t sufficient numbers of users. • The Targa car rally starts on October 26 and this year it will be giving the Clevedon district a wide berth. For the past two years the Targa has used roads on the Pohutukawa Coast and Clevedon district Bur rally organisers ran into local opposition – notably from farmers – and concerns from the Clevedon Community Board.

Use of 1080 now more targeted • FROM PAGE 1 tical terms. “There would need to be 153,000 traps managed at an estimated cost of $10 million as compared to $289,000 for an aerial operation which will take three days.” Bill says the use of 1080 is now much more targeted than it was in 1994. “In 1994, five to seven kgs of bait was spread per hectare, In 2015 there will be two to three kgs per hectare. The helicopter will have GPS guidance systems. That is the equivalent of six Oddfellow lollies spread over two tennis courts. “The baits are cerealbased, not carrot, and are green. The dam edges and major stream tributaries will be baited manually.” He says 1080 breaks down with moisture quickly and leaves no residue. “No-one likes to use poison on the land, or our parks, but at this point in time this is our best option.” The operation will be carried out in mid-2015. The ranges will be shut for two to three months depending on weather conditions. The Hunua Ranges Regional Park covers 17,000 hectares. It includes the 1100 hectare Kokako Management Area (the last naturally occurring kokako population on the mainland, with 55 breeding pairs) and is home to native bats and Hochstetter’s frogs.

Sea Rescue base named after trust chairman

Rowan Muir on the deck of the newly named Rowan Muir Community Centre.

Cleaning up the beaches Beachlands resident Owen Ferguson is a volunteer with the Watercare Harbour Clean-up Trust and last week the trust’s barge, the Phil Warren II, was on the Pohutukawa Coast picking up rubbish. Owen is pictured (right) with one of the trusts’s two employees, Ben Harris, the barge’s skipper. They are at Sunkist Bay Wharf having collected a half dozen plastic bags full of rubbish – and one untethered buoy – from the shoreline around the Umupuia (Duders Beach) area, over a period of a couple of hours. The Watercare Harbour Clean-Up Trust was established in 2002. The Trust works all year round to remove rubbish from Auckland’s Waitemata Harbour and inner Gulf islands. The Trust employs two contractors who crew The Phil Warren boat, scooping up plastic bottles, food wrappers, tyres and other trash from the city’s waterways. They are assisted by a team of volunteers, including Owen who has been a volunteer for the past three months. The crew also removes rubbish from Auckland’s shorelines and beaches, as well as in estuaries and mangrove areas using sea kayaks and a flat-bottomed punt. The Trust is sponsored principally by Watercare Services Limited. Since the Trust was established, the Harbour CleanUp crew has collected PINE HARBOUR MARINA (next to the Jolly Roger Pub), 190 Jack Lachlan Drive, BEACHLANDS 3.5 million litres of litter – enough to fill 117 shipping containers. When Rowan Muir was tossing around potential names for the Pohutukawa Sea Rescue Trust building with other trustees he wasn’t expecting the end result. And he says he was “absolutely stunned” when about a year ago the other trustees said they wanted the building named after him! In a ceremony last Sunday the name plaque for the Rowan Muir Community Centre was officially unveiled by Maraetai police officer and maritime unit member Gary Dixon. It has been used to house the trust and the Coastguard Maraetai rescue boat since 2001. It was previously owned by St John which sold the building with a view to building a new facility in Beachlands. It is still used by the St

John cadets. Rowan Muir says the building is being called a “community centre” because its use goes beyond a base for sea rescue. The trust, whose role is maritime safety and education, uses it to run maritime safety and safe boating courses for the public. It has run about 20 courses for the public and 12 for sea rescue members. The trust is also keen to see it used by other small community groups. The building has recently undergone a $40,000 facelift and is well set up for seminars, courses, business events and club evenings. It includes a fully installed data projector. The rescue boat is housed in the adjacent room. Rowan Muir has been the face of Maraetai’s

sea rescue unit for the past 25 years. He is now chairman of the trust and no longer has an active role on the rescue boat, although he does drive the tractor that launches and retrieves the vessel. Doing this, he says, saves time as it means the boat doesn’t have to wait for a crew member to park the trailer. He also believes he is more valuable “behind the scenes:” where he can use his extensive experience in dealing with councils, doing paperwork, and helping with fundraising to good effect. At the opening, Coastguard Maraetai president Kay West said sea rescue and the trust had a good working relationship. “Coastguard Maraetai would not be the success it is without the dedicated years of hard work put in by Rowan.”

Brigade called to cat stuck in ceiling

Beachlands firefighters last week attended a variation on the catstuck-up-a tree cliche. In this case it was cat stuck in a ceiling cavity. The Beachlands Volunteer Fire Brigade was called to a new home in Spinnaker Bay when the owners, who had just moved in, kept hearing a cat mewing. Initially, they thought the cat was on the roof but on inspection it could not be found. When the mewing persisted the brigade was called and the cat was eventually found trapped inside the sec-

ond storey roof cavity. A newly installed fireplace had to be removed to allow access into the ceiling by rescuers. Just how the cat got up there remains a mystery, but the theory is the cat was already in there when the fireplace

was installed a couple of days earlier, thus trapping it inside. Chief Fire Officer Shane Rutherford says it’s not clear just how long the cat was in the ceiling but it was in good health “apart from being traumatised.”

While he usually plays left midfield, centre midfield or striker, he says he played left back for most of the recent competition, scoring a daring goal in the second match the team played. “My favourite position is left midfield because you get the ball a lot and it’s a good playmaking position,” says Samuel. The Panthers played seven matches, wining six and drawing one. They scored thirty goals and conceded only eight throughout the competition. In the final match they beat AFF Rockets 1-0 to take home the trophy. Samuel says his team was also presented with a second trophy for best technical play. His own soccer prowess is refcognised in his Beachlands club where for the past two seasons he has been promoted to play in a higher grade. This season he played in the 13th Grade. “I love soccer because it’s a fun, competitive game that involves a team and I like the pace of the game because it’s fast and you have to think ahead of time as well,” explains Samuel. The Year 7 pupil at Beachlands School also loves playing Touch over summer at Te Puru, keeping himself fit for the football season. He also plays inter-club tennis for Maraetai Tennis Club, especially enjoying doubles tournaments. His goal is to one day play soccer in the English Premier League for Chelsea, home of his favourite soccer player, centre forward Didier Drogba. Meanwhile, Samuel has already been chosen for the Auckland Football Talent Centre where he receives extra coaching and development. His next aim is to get himself selected for the National Football Talent Centre, in future preparation for age-group FIFA World Cups at U-17 and U-20 level, before setting his sights on Chelsea.

The Te Puru Sea Scout Group held its annual “Going Up” Ceremony recently. This year 20 Keas became Cubs, 22 Cubs became Scouts and 3 Scouts were welcomed into the Venturer Unit. The presence of a large number of parents, grand-parents and siblings meant that the Scout hall was too small, and instead the ceremony was held in the main hall at the Te Puru Community Centre. With the substantial increase in the number of Scout age youth members the Group will be running a second Scout Troop from the beginning of Term 4.

This has taken the total number of local youth taking advantage of what Scouting has to offer to 150, supported by 28 adult volunteers. Of the youth members about 20% are girls. The Group is now one of the largest in the region. Earlier this year the local Helping Hands Trust provided the Group with a grant towards the cost of training adult leaders. With the financial support provided by the Trust, two long standing leaders were able to attend the Scouting Advanced Personal Development (SADP) course. They were Kea Leader Helen Rutledge and Cub Leader Melissa Munro. SAPD is a three day residential course run by Scouts NZ, and is the highest level of formal training offered by the

association. Leaders completing the course are presented with their Wood Beads, which are a highly regarded symbol of the level of training achieved within the Scouting movement worldwide. Group Leader Ben Everts says contributions to the Group, such as that made by the Helping Hands Trust, are greatly valued, and contribute significantly to the ability of the volunteer leaders to offer youth interesting, meaningful and fun programmes. These in turn help the Group to meet the aims of the association, which is to contribute to development of selfconfident, skilled and resilient young people who will become responsible people and good citizens.

As part of the Going Up Ceremony Helen Rutledge (top) and Melissa Munro (bottom) are presented with their Wood Beads by the Co-Zone Kea Leader Donna Bagley, and the Group’s Principal Cub Leader Lisa Dudley, respectively.

Coast cricket ready for new season The Pohutukawa Coast Cricket Club is holding its registration day this Sunday (October 19) at the Te Puru outdoor cricket nets from 2pm til 4pm. The club, which plays in the Counties Cricket Association, has been running for more than 10 years fielding teams in a variety of age groups over that time. “Over the years we have won senior and one day Counties Cricket competitions,” says club president Kelvin (KP) Perfect who has headed the club for seven years. “Our achievements might not sound that much but when you factor in we only have approx 25 members and some clubs we play against have as many as 500 members, I think our village club and its members have done really well through some difficult times both membership and financial wise.” At present the club has two senior teams lined up for the coming season, one in the Senior B and one

20/20 team. “As usual we are always looking for players of any ability so if you feel like a game of cricket or wish to be part of the club come down and have a chat this Sunday and find out a bit more about it,” says Kelvin. “In my opinion we have the most beautiful grounds to play on at Te Puru and all teams that come to play at our home ground make comments like ‘this is paradise’ or ‘what a setting’ etc .” Kelvin is also keen to once again get kids teams up and running playing cricket through the club. “Your support will keep our cricket club playing for years to come and that is my goal,” he says. “If the club grows in numbers we can start getting our kids playing as well and our kids playing sport in our community is something we all should be striving for.” For more information call KP on 0274 940 782.
