Cancer Society buys ‘the house’ By FRANKIE WEBB

Today is Daffodil Day Dig deep Horowhenua I wandered lonely as a cloud That floats on high o'er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze. — William Wordsworth

Winchester House has been home to the Horowhenua Cancer Society service for six years. It has been a focus for Cancer Society volunteer activities, people needing assistance, and used by other health agency appointments. The “house” as it is affectionately known, is operated and maintained by a dedicated team of volunteers who have looked after it as if it was their own. Now it is. The Cancer Society of New Zealand Manawatu has purchased the house to ensure the stability of Horowhenua services. “The demand for the supportive care services and help the Cancer Society provides has increased in the Horowhenua area,” said Centre Manager for the Manawatu branch, Chris Franklyn. “This investment allows us to create a central base in the local community to be able to help more people, their families and wha¯nau.” Horowhenua Field Officer Marilyn Stevens will make the house her base.

HOME for life. Horowhenua Cancer services have tenanted Winchester House for six years but they now own the character house having taken official possession, appropriately during Daffodil Week. Terry Kelly, right, local Horowhenua Cancer services coordinator celebrates with local members as the Cancer Society of New Zealand Manawatu Centre’s Marilyn Stevens and Chris Franklyn hand over the keys. PHOTO: FRANKIE WEBB “Other support services want to utilise the house,” Mr Franklyn said. “The DHB cancer nurses, Cancer Psychology Services, Naturalware and a lymphoedema support group have expressed interest in using the house to offer their services,” he said.

Support group and volunteer meetings will continue to be held at Winchester House along with information booklets and resources. ■ Winchester House at 112 Winchester St is open from 9am to 3pm week days.

FIRST FLOWERS OF SPRING REPRESENT HOPE Today is Daffodil Day — the Cancer Society's annual flagship and major fundraising event as well as raising awareness of cancer in New Zealand. Donations received go towards research into the causes and treatment of all types of cancer and

providing a wide range of support services, information, health promotion and education programmes to reduce cancer risk. It is used to fund awareness campaigns and programmes for people affected by cancer. The daffodil is one of the first

flowers of spring, the bright yellow blooms a reminder of the joys that the new season will bring, representing hope. One in three people living in New Zealand are affected by cancer, it could be you or someone you know. Dig deep Horowhenua.

Good thinking

It is interesting to hear the ex-freezing works at Longburn is going to be used as an “inland port”. One can safely assume this is a new name for a distribution centre. There is no doubt Palmerston North is ideally located for a distribution centre and formal relationships with sea ports will facilitate import and export to and from the region. It is great to see progressive thinking and use of a “brownfield” industrial site. However, there is one reference that may well need some more thought. They say it supports “our recently announced Central New Zealand Agribusiness Strategy, a collaboration between all eight councils in our Horizons region with the target of doubling Agribusiness exports from $1.9 billion to $3.8 billion per year by 2025”. Who will answer the question regarding the form of the increase in Agribusiness? Certainly a doubling of the income into the region over the next 11 years is commendable, but if this increase is based mainly on an increase in dairy production, who is looking at the impact on the environment, especially

nitrogen from bovine urine in the groundwater? Is this a question for Amy Adams, the Minister for the Environment? How many more dairy cows are needed to generate $1.9 billion, bearing in mind that the urine from just one dairy cow is equal to that from 18 humans? A single cow excretes some 25 litres of untreated nitrogen bearing urine into our ground water every day. My question is, how much more nitrogen can our ground water safely absorb when we are still striving to clean our current waterways

Outgoing MPs

Guidelines have been prepared by Parliamentary Services to assist outgoing Members of Parliament, irrespective of whether the MPs lose their seat in Parliament or decide before the election to resign from parliament. The guidelines cover travel subsidies for outgoing MPs, as well as general expenses associated with their electorate offices

closure and the removal of personal effects from the MPs’ Parliamentary offices. Despite losing their seat in Parliament or opting to resign from Parliament, the outgoing MPs are paid a minimum of three months’ salary and access to four taxpayer-funded therapy sessions. Former MPs, depending on how many terms they have served, qualify for subsidised domestic and international travel, eg a twoterm MP, elected before 1999, qualifies for a 50 percent travel rebate, while a fiveterm MP qualifies for a 90 percent travel rebate. A three- or four-term former MP qualifies for a travel subsidy from 60-75 percent, while MPs’ spouses/partners also qualify. With backbencher salaries around $150,000 a year plus expenses, it is no wonder most sitting MPs seek re-election to the House of Representatives, despite the inconvenience of regular travel to Wellington when Parliament is in session and Parliamentary committee meetings and public hearings. It is evident with MMP that a high party list placing ensures longevity in Parliament for the member. BILL STIRLING Levin

Sea cadets face wash up By TANYA WOOD The Levin Sea Cadets, TS Tutira, has reached crisis point. With just five cadets left, the unit has been told if they can’t get more members signing up in the next few weeks, the unit is likely to be closed down. TS Tutira unit commander Allen Douglas said if this happens, the chance of it ever reopening is very slim. “We’ve had nothing in writing from the Commandant of New Zealand Cadet Forces but have been told verbally that if we don’t have the numbers coming in after a sailing weekend next month, we’re going to be seriously looked at.” He said there are already a number of sea cadet units on a waiting list waiting to be formally recognised. “If we can get 15 or 17 new members by the end of the year, we should be ok. My goal is to have 30 cadets by the end of next year.” TS Tutira Sea Cadets has been running in Levin for 51 years and has been at its current site by Lake Horowhenua since 1963. Mr Douglas said sea cadets is serious fun for boys and girls, aged 13 to 16, and has much to offer. In addition to sailing, power boating, kayaking, seamanship, regattas, courses at defence bases and rides on navy ships, the cadets also go tramping, camping and have their own indoor .22 rifle range. Training is one night a

BLUE BEAT REPORT

Report dubious behaviour by COMMUNITY CONSTABLE GRAEME JARVIS It has been another busy week, with 83 calls received by Levin police. This does not include all the work generated by staff working proactively to reduce crime and road crashes. Police received information last week about a Pacific Island male, aged in his early 20s, door knocking in the early evening in the Liverpool Street area of Levin. This male, well dressed and carrying a clip board, was very vague concerning the company he represented and was not carrying identification. He was asking the home owner if their power was at the correct rate. This is very

suspicious behaviour for the time of night, and if anyone else is visited by this person, do not give any personal information, nor allow him into the home. Call police, who are very interested to find out exactly what he is up to. Readers may not have heard of Blue Light, a registered charity and community policing youth programme that runs events and programmes for youth, free from drugs, alcohol and violence. The programmes build self esteem in young people, reduce crime and

build a positive youth and police partnership. Several events have already been held this year, however, from now until the end of the year, Horowhenua Blue Light is involved in a number of exciting events. The first is a trip to Auckland in mid September for 40 lucky young students. This trip is centered around a visit to Rainbows End, but will also include outdoor events such as a mud slide and kayaking, plus a visit to the Sky Tower and hot swim in Taupo on the way home. The following Saturday, September 27, the Blue Light team are running a “Tough Kid Challenge“, based on an obstacle course, water and mud! This event

HELICOPTER RESCUE REPORT The Palmerston North based Rescue Helicopter was sent to Mount Ruapehu at around 2pm on Tuesday after a snowboarder fell in rugged terrain injuring himself. The Cambridge man, 40, was boarding ‘off piste' with his son when his son fell, losing one of his skis which then slid down the mountain. While attempting to retrieve the ski the father lost his footing and slid a further 70 to 100 meters down a rugged icy slope suffering back injuries. A passing skier raised the alarm with the Turoa Ski Patrol. The location of the accident meant recovery of the injured man by foot was not practicable so the Rescue Helicopter was called in to assist. The Turoa Ski Patrol were able to

A new legal chapter begins for Levin law firm Coopers Law, following the purchase by new principal Kelvin Campbell. Mr Campbell and his family have moved from a South Island firm, following a number of years legal work in Government departments and private practice. Mr Campbell co edits the legal text book, Brooker’s Law of Transportation, and brings a wide range of experience in departmental prosecutions, civil and criminal, youth and family court work, along with general legal practice. The firm is now offering these services to their clients. His wife, Maryna, is also working for the firm, while their two children

are attending a local primary school. They are both impressed with the facilities the district has to offer, such as Te Takere, and community events such as the Medieval Market and the Kimberley life style and music festival, and the town music event. The firm of Cooper Campbell Law, as it is now known, brings a wide knowledge of Levin and its people, particularly through its retiring partners, Jeremy Cooper, who has practiced law in Levin since 1971, and Ross Kerr, who moved here in 1990. Their long serving staff, Wendy McMahon, Lee Ryder and Shelly Scrivener are also well known in the community.

Mr Cooper and Mr Kerr have enjoyed acting for people within the Horowhenua community, and are confident that the town and the extended rural area have a great future ahead. Mr Campbell is now the sole principal of the firm, with its property brand of Horowhenua Property Law, while Jeremy and Ross will continue to share their knowledge and expertise with the firm as employed consultants. The firm will be offering the same high service as it has previously given to its clients. It welcomes enquiries from existing and prospective clients, and operates from its downstairs premises at 252 Oxford Street.

A year of intense study awaits Levin’s Kieran Brown (pictured) when he arrives in England en route to Oxford University. In the next 12 months of full time study Kieran, 27, is aiming to complete a Bachelor degree in public policy. “The opportunity to study at Oxford is fantastic, the university has a history dating back 900 years,” said Kieran, a former Horowhenua College student. He said throughout his life he has had the support and encouragement from whanau and his teachers. Kieran said the course was as much practical application as it was theory, and he was looking forward to seeing where the

next year’s study would take him. His interest lies in foreign policy, particularly in relation to New Zealand’s relationship with Asia. Kieran’s ambition is to make a strategic difference to the way commerce and public policy intertwine for the betterment of all. He said he would like to see New Zealand change its reliance on primary industry exports to more knowledge-based industries. “I am really passionate about education and increased global security issues,” he said. “The future holds a lot of exciting and challenging times ahead.”

Artists wanted for their top designs Horowhenua District Council’s Pride and Vibrancy Committee will select designs for Chorus Telecommunications cabinets, four large and four small, in Levin. Chorus commissioned the project following positive public feedback about the artistic painting of six cabinets last year. Selection of the best designs will be made from artists submissions to Horowhenua District Council by Friday October 10. This year designing artists can express an interest in being able to paint the street cabinets themselves should their design be chosen. “We are hoping to see some designs from youth, as well as a variety of cultural and historical influences and from various styles,” said Horowhenua Deputy Mayor and committee member Cr Garry Good. “There’s an opportunity to do

something really special to (acknowledge) our servicemen and women as we approach the World War One centenary.” In 2013 cabinets which were regularly targeted by taggers were painted by artist Wendy Hodder. “Since the cabinets have been painted I can’t recall any instances of vandalism and we’ve also noticed a reduction in tagging in the areas surrounding these cabinets,” Mr Good said. “The transformation of street appeal has been tremendous.” Artists will receive a fee between $400 and $1000, depending on the size of the cabinet to cover the artist’s time to design, prepare and then paint the mural. All materials will be provided and all paintings will have graffiti-guard applied. ■ To submit a design or for more information, contact Community Projects Officer Cathryn Pollock on 06 366 0999 or cathrynp@horowhenua.govt.nz

Small school with big passion By ANDREW POZNIAK Principal St Mary’s School is a small Roman Catholic full Primary School, situated in Foxton offering faith formation and education to students from Years 1 to 8. Our school is passionate about developing the heart, mind and spiritual soul of each of its students which our values of love, courage, community and service reflect. Parents often wonder if a bigger school might offer more for their child, but bigger is not always best when it comes to the relationship between student learning and school size. Research is showing that by attending small schools, students actually do better. Students are less likely to be overlooked or isolated in small schools. Everybody’s participation is needed for team activities, and children in small schools come to know and care about each other to a greater degree than is possible in big schools. St Mary’s can also guarantee class size will be capped at 25 students. Children feel a greater sense of engagement, belonging and personal value when their classmates and teachers get to know them. This in turn has a positive effect on behaviour, and behavioural problems often diminish, with our school being able to focus on learning. Parents and teachers become allies in fostering student success. Communication between staff is easier, and they are able to work together to build

THANKS and Cheers: SPCA Horowhenua shop manager Chris Robinson celebrates two years of trading, the last 12 months out of the former Hospice Shop in the north end of town, and she wants to thank Horowhenua for their support. PHOTO: FRANKIE WEBB

Bigger location earns bigger profits for SPCA SALES OFFICE 20-30 Coventry Street PO Box 1087, LEVIN 0800 QUINS LEVIN (0800 784 675)

By FRANKIE WEBB Typical of so many charitable organisations, SPCA Horowhenua is not affluent. As an initiative to bring more funding to the animal welfare organisation, management at the time decided to open an Op Shop in Oxford Street. On September 1, 2012 the doors opened. From small beginnings in a tiny shop at the southern end of Oxford Street the support from Horowhenua was so huge the premises were outgrown within a year. Searching for new premises, the former Arohanui Hospice op shop at the

other end of town ticked all the boxes. “This was such a successful location for the Hospice shop,” SPCA shop manager since day one, Chris Robinson, said. “While we were a bit tentative about taking on such a big place, our fears were unfounded.” Moving into the bigger premises has enabled furniture and larger items to be sold as well as the usual clothing, books, toys and bric a brac. Open six days a week and manned by 20 volunteers, the Op Shop is making a significant contribution to SPCA Horowhenua, having turned over $150,000 in the past year.

For the love of animals, Levin’s Michelle Poulton plans to embark on an adventure of animal conservation in the depth of Africa. Michelle is a first year vet science student at Massey University. Over the years she has become interested in the conservation of animals in Africa. While their habitat is being encroached by commercial developments, killed by farmers to protect their crops and hunted by poachers, Michelle wants to experience first hand the conservation programmes being used to ensure the survival of endangered species. Her plan is to spend a month learning both the practical side of conservation and the results that the programmes are having. However, while she is studying and working part time, raising the necessary funds to do the trip is hard. To help her achieve her goal an event has been organised for Saturday, September 6 at Western House. Local band Gravel Trax will be playing, plus there will be a guest speaker and Michelle will be explaining the importance of animal conservation, not only in Africa, but all around the world where habitats are being destroyed for land development or mineral mining. Michelle, like many others, believe there has to be a balance between commercial prosperity and habitat protection. The month she hopes to spend in South Africa will give her an insight into what is being done now and what can be achieved in the future.

Pest home invasion cause for concern Gardening help

Practical advice is worth its weight in gold. Experience is the greatest teacher, learning by mistakes, using a combination of logic and common sense are all attributes to obtain and use in your gardening endeavour. A few weeks ago I was sent a private publication of a book entitled Planting for Birds, Bees and Farm Stock by Jan Wagtendonk and asked to comment on it. Considered ‘a rundown wilderness’ set on 60 acres of land north of Tauranga, Jan looked at enhancing what was already there, planting food sources for birds and bees, instead of cutting down native bush and running stock. This book is ideal for lifestylers, gardeners with large sections and any gardener that wants a bit of heaven around their home, with great advice on how to protect and feed bees. The book is only available from Jan Wagtendonk, enquiries@warmearthcottage.co.nz, or phone (07) 5490 962. (rrp $30). A reader in Kapiti sent me an email last week with a problem I had not heard of previously: uninvited clover mites taking up residence in a house over summer. “Professional spraying only

Digging in WALLY RICHARDS lasted a few days and ‘No Bugs Super’ professional strength spray did not work either. Now it’s warming up, they are back inside, including hundreds of eggs in between double-glazed glass windows. What can I do to stop these little critters putting on gum boots and breeding like wildfire?,” wrote Jan. My first response was to Google Clover Mites and then speak to Jan about possible solutions. For indoors, use a vacuum cleaner with a vacuum bag to suck them up and remove the bag. Spray fly spray into the bag or sprinkle in sulphur powder, and place the bag in a sealed container to stop them getting out if the sulphur or fly spray didn’t kill them all. The main thing is to kill the critters outside, found on garden plants. Spray plants with liquid sulphur, a well known effective mite killer, and Raingard. Repeat a couple of weeks

13

later and until the problem is solved. Jan’s neighbours did not have this problem, which means the pests were brought into the property on either plant material or a compost/ mulch. A wall device that dispatches a shot of pyrethrum every few minutes, effective for keeping ants out, may also work on clover mites. Hydrogen peroxide, effective on mites that attack skin, could be tried indoors but test that it will not bleach any wall paper or material first. Spring is happening early, so start controlling insect pests now: Yellow Sticky White Fly Traps can be placed near plants prone to pest problems. Neem Tree Oil spraying and Neem Tree Granules sprinkled under citrus trees will see off root mealy bugs, white fly and scale, under apple trees for codlin moth, under roses for aphids and under rhododendron for thrips. If we get a cold snap after a week of nice weather then nature will knock out most of the early pests. ■ Any problems, contact me on 0800 466464 (Palmerston North 3570606), email wallyjr@gardenews.co.nz, web site www.gardenews.co.nz

GOOD gardening advice can lead to great success.

Waiopehu come from behind to win By PETER FRANKLIN For many in the crowd it seemed like the writing was on the wall as Horowhenua College headed to half time with a 14 point lead on the board in the 2014 Westpac Trophy rugby challenge, but a fantastic comeback in the second half by Waiopehu College First XV secured a one point victory, 15-14. The Westpac Trophy is the prized competition between the two colleges and generates large crowds. Emotions from supporters got stirred when both sides faced off and lay down the challenge with their own haka. Horowhenua set the pace going straight on attack, stretching the Waiopehu defence, forcing errors that opened opportunities to score. With two converted tries on the board, Waiopehu seemed to be unable to stop the onslaught. Brimming with confidence Horowhenua College started the second half as they had finished the first half. But the tide turned. During the half time break Waiopehu got the motivation they needed and the game turned their way. One converted try and one unconverted brought them to within two points of Horowhenua, with a penalty being awarded giving them the one point they needed to take the lead for the first time in the game. Horowhenua were under pressure and tried to get back on a roll but Waiopehu could

A victory haka by Waiopehu First XV after a come from behind win on Thursday to take the Westpac trophy for a fifth year running. sense that the Westpac Trophy was theirs and fought hard to keep Horowhenua at bay. As the minutes ticked down, Horowhenua were awarded two penalties that would have given them the win they were so desperately searching for, but it was not to be.

Netball drought broken By PETER FRANKLIN A four year shield drought was broken on Saturday for the Waiopehu Senior A netball team winning the College Challenge Shield by the slenderest of margins 29-26 against Horowhenua College. Team manager Sara Collett said the girls were pumped up in the lead up to the game and on the day put everything they had into it. “It was a fantastic effort by the whole team,” she said. Ms Collett said the team (Waiopehu) went into the game as the underdogs and they were feeling the pressure, however pure determination kept them on the pace with Horowhenua, trading point after point. Both sides focused on an attacking game, making the defenders work hard shutting the goal attack down. The teams meet again at 11am on Saturday at Donnelly Park.

Busy start for bowls Opening day for the new season at the Levin RSA Bowling Club was a packed affair, with eager bowlers keen to get back on the greens. Greenkeeper Ray Lovejoy had the greens in perfect condition for the playing of the main event on the day, the Property Brokers Triples. In first place was the team of Bob Harwood, Diane

Spicer and Roy James, four wins, 20 ends with 54 points. Second place was Dorothy Brazendale, Maureen Malcolm and Tony Burak, four wins, 20 ends and 52 points. In third place was the team of Murray Pollock, Ken Cheyne and Errol Skelton, four wins, 19 ends and 38 points.

under 14s battled it out, showing that they had the talent needed to produce an entertaining game. Both sides were evenly matched with only four points separating them on the final whistle, 35-31 to Waiopehu College.

When the final whistle blew the score went in Waiopehu’s favour 15-14, they had managed to hold out Horowhenua in what was an excellent last five minutes. The curtain raiser was just as exciting as both Horowhenua and Waiopehu

■ Apology: We apologise for the mix up of names in the photo of the two First XV college captains in Wednesday’s edition. Makona Pokoati is the Horowhenua College captain and Luke Felgitscher the Waiopehu College captain.
