PETER FRANKLIN ELECTION DAY

peter.franklin@chronicle.co.nz By Saturday all the campaigning for this year’s General Election will be done and dusted. It will be up to the voters to decide who will be the person and political parties representing them in Parliament for the next three years. The important thing is that people make the effort to cast their vote. Anyone who is enrolled by Friday, September 19, can vote in the General Election. Saturday, September 20, is election day, and there will be 19 voting locations in Horowhenua. To make the process as easy as possible voters should have received an EasyVote card or a letter from the Electoral Commission, to take with you. You can vote without an EasyVote card or letter, but it will take slightly longer. If you don't have an EasyVote card or letter, you will need to tell the issuing officer your full name and address. They will then give you your ballot paper. Take your ballot paper to a private booth. Place a tick by the name of the political party of your choice and a tick by the name of the candidate you would most like to represent your electorate. If you can’t get to a voting place on election day, there are two options: you can vote in advance, or you can cast a

OVER the years the Otaki electorate has been a battleground during the build up to election day, fought out by the two major parties, Labour and National. National’s Nathan Guy (pictured right) has won the fight for the last two terms and is seeking a third. Labour’s candidate this year is Rod McCann (pictured left). The outcome of the 2014 General Election is now in the hands of the voting public, will there be any surprises? special vote. Voting in advance in your electorate is easier than casting a special vote. If you need help to read or mark your voting papers, a friend, family member or electoral official can help. Just ask when you go to vote. Anyone who doesn’t speak English can take a friend or family member to the

advance voting or voting place to help. If, for whatever reason, you’re unable to get to an advance voting place before election day, you are legally entitled to have time away from work to go and vote on election day. The important thing is that you exercise your right and vote. ■ Rangitikei candidates, page 5.

Election Rules

While readers’ letters and comments on general election issues are welcome, Horowhenua Chronicle will not be publishing any views that, in the opinion of the editor, border on electioneering until after the General Election on September 20.

Arrogance?

I am one of probably many voters that is looking forward to the General Election being over so we can get back to normal. While the national campaign has been one of the nastiest known with revolting hate songs etc, locally the Labour candidate has also disappointed me for the arrogance he has shown. Last Friday I saw a vehicle of his parked up on the footpath opposite the Levin Adventure Park. I’ve previously seen a vehicle blatantly electioneering in what is a private supermarket car park. There are a large number of elderly in Levin and a good number also use mobility scooters — perhaps the Labour candidate doesn’t know this. But obscuring the footpath is arrogant and unnecessary and can prevent people going about their normal way of life. I would like to wish our local National MP Nathan Guy all the best. He is a man of great integrity and honesty and comes from a family with a strong history of community involvement. PETER ROE Levin

Chaired by Miranui Ward Councillor Ross Campbell, candidates all had a total of 10 minutes to speak then answer a few questions from the audience. Seven candidates were invited with two placing their apologies. Those attending were National’s Ian McKelvie, Labour’s Deborah Russell, Neil Wilson for ACT, Rom Rudzki for NZ First and Maddy Drew, Otaki’s Green Party representative as Rangitikei’s Jack McDonald was unable to

Loop boardwalk

Last week I was introduced to another of Foxton’s well kept secrets, the Awahou Bush Boardwalk, which runs alongside the Foxton Loop just along from the bowling club. This walk has obviously been lovingly constructed by folk who care about the town and its environment. The boardwalk meanders though the wetland on the river bank and the construction with wire netting over the boards makes it accessible even for wheelchairs. In places you can see the water under the boards; the amount of water will vary depending upon the tide. Many native trees have been planted by the volunteers and a number of them are labelled, giving the boardwalk great educational potential. The grass on the return walk along the former railway tracks was freshly mown and looking good but I wonder whose responsibility it is to maintain the wetland area of the boardwalk, it is certainly in need of some weed control and maybe opening the actual walk up to the river frontage in a couple of places. There is some maintenance needed on the boardwalk where some thoughtless folk have broken the ends off some of the boards. Foxton has tremendous potential especially for ecological tourism, it will benefit the town to develop this. JOHN STIRLING Foxton

Salvation Army bringing big brass to town The sounds of heavy metal will be ringing around Levin this weekend. But it’s heavy metal of a different kind as the 30-strong Wellington Citadel (brass) Band of The Salvation Army comes to town. The Wellington Citadel Band’s history stems back to 1883, the same year The Salvation Army

“opened fire” in New Zealand. Throughout these years the band has earned a reputation as one of the premiere bands of The Salvation Army internationally. Performances in Australia, Fiji, Hong Kong, The Philippines, Japan, United States, Canada and the United Kingdom have

enhanced this reputation. The band continues to maintain a busy schedule of engagements around its base in central Wellington, but also travels to other locations throughout New Zealand on a regular basis. “It’s amazing to think that this band, which continues to perform a

really varied repertoire, to a very high standard is made up of regular people, with regular jobs, who just want to do the best they can to acknowledge the God they believe in,” reflects Chris Collings, a former member of the band and currently Corps Officer (Senior Pastor) of Levin Salvation Army.

The band will participate in the morning worship service at 10.30am on Sunday morning at The Salvation Army, 11 Durham Street. At 2pm the band will display its versatility with a one hour concert ‘Sunday Melodies’. Both events are free and anyone is welcome to attend.

Levin mum makes the most of each day AGS

By

TANYA WOOD

Aicardi–Goutie`res Syndrome (AGS) is a rare disorder typically affecting the brain and skin. It affects only girls and usually presents in early infancy. Children develop features of an encephalopathy (brain disease, damage or malfunction), with irritability, persistent crying, feeding difficulties, an intermittent fever (without obvious infection), and abnormal neurology, dystonia (uncontrollable muscle contraction), an exaggerated startle response and sometimes seizures. Glaucoma can be present at birth, or develop later. Many children retain apparently normal vision, though a significant number are cortically blind. Hearing is almost invariably normal. Over time, up to 40 per cent of patients develop so-called chilblain lesions, most typically on the toes and fingers. Following an original description of eight cases in 1984, the condition was first referred to as AGS in 1992. AGS can occur due to mutations in any one of a number of different genes, of which seven have been identified to date. Almost certainly underdiagnosed, to date (2014) at least 400 cases of AGS are known worldwide. There is no cure targeting the underlying cause of AGS currently, treatments address the symptoms. Patients have a shortened life span and commonly die from pulmonary infections.

hree weeks ago Madison Graves wasn’t expected to make her second birthday. Friends and family were advised by hospital staff to come to say their good byes. It wasn’t the first time that it has been ‘touch and go’ for the little girl, just one of 400 known children worldwide, and two in New Zealand, with Aicardi–Goutie`res Syndrome (AGS). Madison, who still resembles a threemonth-old baby, pulled through and was home in time for her birthday on September 5 but the planned party was cancelled. Mum Caitlan, a part-time lifeguard at Levin Aquatic Centre, was 18 when she fell pregnant. It was unplanned. Neither Caitlan nor Madison’s father knew they were carriers of the AGS gene until after Madison was diagnosed. It takes two carriers to pass on the genetic disorder to a child, though Caitlan has since heard of a carrier and non-carrier having a child with AGS. Caitlan is one of five siblings. The family has been advised that AGS is so rare it is not worth testing the rest of the family, which would require travelling overseas. Caitlan’s sister has since had a healthy baby boy. Madison was three months old when she had her first seizure. A CT scan and MRI test showed calcification on the brain and microcephaly (abnormal smallness of the head). “The older she got, the more things showed up,” Caitlan said. “A few months later she started getting chilblains on her hands and feet and all the signs were pointing to AGS. It was all a bit surreal at the time.” AGS was confirmed by one of the world’s foremost experts in the field and the latest blood tests have confirmed Madison is suffering from the severest form of the genetic disorder. Madison has lost all her baby skills. “She used to be able to push herself along the floor on her tummy, and then one day I realised I hadn’t seen her doing it for a while.” On a good day Madison can move her head. At every nappy change Caitlan has to exercise Madison’s limbs, which stiffen up easily. Other days she can be “completely floppy”.

RARE GIFT: A smile from her 2-year-old daughter Madison is a rare gift for Levin mum Caitlan. Madison is one of just 400 known children worldwide with the rare Aicardi– Goutie`res syndrome. Eating, sucking and swallowing movements are not co-ordinated. After the first seizure, Madison was fed through a tube in her nose, replaced with a micky button in her stomach, in March this year. A few baby teeth are only just visible through the gums. “Our feeding schedule is one hour on

Horizons chief executive Michael McCartney says World Rivers Day is an opportunity for all Horizons staff to get involved with caring for the Region’s waterways. “We know how keen our communities are to improve the health and mana of our rivers so we’d love to see the public join us for the morning.” He says they are slowly starting to see an improvement in the region’s rivers thanks to the combined efforts of Horizons, industry, the community and iwi. “This day helps to celebrate that.” A report to Horizons’ Environment Committee this week showed Horizons freshwater team worked with 126 individuals, community groups and iwi in 2013-14. and three hours off from 6.30am to about 11.30 at night. She can be a little ratbag at times staying awake all night and sleeping during the day.” Caitlan says there is nothing wrong with Madison’s eyesight, it is her brain that can’t interpret images correctly. A blockage in her ears means Madison needs a hearing

aid. The first day she got the hearing aid Caitlan went to her mum’s place. “Madison smiled for the first time hearing our voices, we were just in tears.” The smiling stopped for a while but now has started again. “Those are the special moments, getting a smile and having eye contact, even if it’s just for a few seconds. It just melts my heart. When her focus wanders, she can be in la la land having seizures every day.” Weekly hospital appointments are the norm, as are monthly visits to treat chest infections. When not sick, Madison goes to day care at Country Educare two and half days a week where she gets to pat lambs, listen to music and “play” with other children. While Caitlan has good family support on both sides of the family (she is not with Madison’s father), she says only parents with disabled children truly know the emotional toll it takes on her. “I know Maddie’s sick but it is hard for me to be around other kids, it’s something I don’t think I’ll get used to. It’s right in my face that Maddie won’t live long. I know she has no chance of recovery, I’m being realistic, but it it’s still hard to admit at times. She’s only two and we’ve been through heaps, we’re just living for now. It’s been bitter, sweet. If she makes it to five, she makes it to five.” She says she and Madison’s father have agreed to give their daughter quality of life while she’s here. “It’s really hard but she’s our normal.”

Unbelted teen smashes through windscreen in Foxton crash By PETER FRANKLIN A parent’s warning: Put your seatbelt on whenever you get into a car. The warning comes from Foxton father Gordon Henry whose 16-year-old daughter Jasmine was seriously injured in a car crash at the intersection of Moutua Road and Kere Kere Road, Foxton, on Friday. The crash happened at about 9pm, when the car Miss Henry was a passenger in left the road at speed into a ditch. Her father said she was thrown from the back seat of the car through the front windscreen on to the bank with the car

rebounding on to her leg and arm. “I spoke to firemen at the scene to try and find out how she ended up trapped by the car,” Mr Gordon said. He says it appears when the car hit the bank with such force, it bounced back and forward again, hitting and trapping his daughter. The two others in the car, including the 18-year-old male driver, were taken to Palmerston Hospital by ambulance, the driver suffering a dislocated shoulder and cuts and the passenger, another male, suffering cuts. It took firefighters another hour to carefully dig around the girl to allow her to be lifted on to a stretcher and

carried to the waiting rescue helicopter. Since the crash she has undergone surgery to pin her broken leg and will be operated on this week to repair damage to her elbow. Mr Henry says she has learnt a harsh lesson, “She is alive, that is the main thing,” he said. Police are investigating the crash, no charges have been laid at this time. LVN170914splmoutuacrash

NEWS IN BRIEF Manufacturing up

“Our plans will ensure a strong, open economy that delivers more for New Zealanders and their families.”

KEEP NEW ZEALAND WORKING MMP elections are always close even with the Opposition in disarray. Any vote for a minor party risks political turmoil and our economy stalling. Only a strong PARTY VOTE for National will keep New Zealand heading in the right direction.

New Zealand’s manufacturing sector has shown expansion every month of the past two years and experienced its strongest level of activity for five months in August according to the latest BNZ — Business NZ Performance of Manufacturing Index (PMI). The seasonally adjusted PMI for August was 56.5 (a PMI reading above 50.0 generally indicates expansion, below that, is declining) making it 3.0 points higher than July. The North Island Northern region (60.6) showed strong growth with activity levels over 60 for the first time since December 2013. In contrast, the Central region (46.3) produced a contraction in the economy as a result, largely on par with July figures. The South Island Canterbury/ Westland region (54.7) rose 2.4, while the Otago-Southland region (57.9) went into expansion after three consecutive months of contraction. Manufacturing was mostly positive.

Police briefed on sport

Senior police officers throughout New Zealand have been briefed by members of the International Cricket Council Anticorruption Unit. Martin Vertigen and John Rhodes spoke about how the anti-corruption unit works to protect the integrity of international cricket in preparation for the introduction of the Crimes (Match-fixing) Amendment Bill. The Government hopes to pass the Bill in December to help address match-fixing risks. It is particularly relevant with New Zealand hosting the Cricket World Cup and the FIFA Under 20 (football) World Cup in 2015. Other measures include the introduction of the New Zealand Policy on Sports Match-Fixing and Related Corruption and the development of education resources. The New Zealand Cricket Players’ Association are looking forward to working with the Government, Sport NZ, the Police and other partner agencies to make this legislation work and to implement education programmes that help to protect athletes globally.

Police investigate Levin house fire By PETER FRANKLIN

Levin police are urging anyone with information relating to the house fire in Queen Street West, Levin, now being treated as arson, to come forward. Detective Peter Vine, of Levin Police, said the investigation was progressing, however they would like to speak to anyone who saw any suspicious activity near or at the address, or has any information, to get in contact with police. The fire was reported at about 3.30am on Wednesday September 10. Levin volunteer fire brigade responded to the 111 call, and were able to get the fire under control and out, however the inside of the home was extensively damaged. Mr Vine said police and fire investigators were on the scene later that morning and determined the fire had been started inside the building. ■ Anyone with information should phone Levin Police Station on (06) 366-0500.

More memories of Kimberley Horowhenua Chronicle reporter Frankie Webb continues her walk through the Kimberley Centre with former resident Brent Swain as he shares his memories, hopes and aspirations. Brent is now working at the Centre for owner Wayne Bishop. Moving through the buildings is a little eerie for me, for Brent it’s like a homecoming. Birds trapped in the buildings have left their mark, in some cases their remains. “I’m going to fix this place up,” Brent tells me. “I’m going to bring it back to life.” I ask him about the controversial closure of the centre in 2006. Straightaway I realise it’s not a place he wants to visit. Silence, a few tears. “This was my home, this is where my friends lived.” We change the subject. Brent wasn’t born a Swain, he was a Harper. Most members of the Swain family worked at Kimberley during Brent’s time there. Norma and Ken Swain and their children welcomed Brent into their home for weekends and holidays from when he was 8 years old. At 15 Brent was shifted to Palmerston North, he got work at the Plaza and joined a number of community groups. Norma takes up the story. “He came home one Easter, he was 18. I took him to work with me at Te Whanau.” Long story short, Brent didn’t want to return to Palmerston North. Te Whanau offered him a job. Brent wanted to stay. “It wasn’t quite that simple,”

HOSPITAL HISTORY A bus carrying 42 young men arrived on July 27 1945 at the newly established Levin Farm and Mental Deficiency Colony, established in 1945 on an ex-air force base in Kimberley Road, Levin. It went on to become the largest intellectually handicapped hospital in the Southern Hemisphere. In 1959 it had a name change to the Levin Hospital and Training School, the first psychopaedic nurses graduated in 1964. In 1977 the name was changed to Kimberley Hospital and Training School. In 1987 the name changed to the Kimberley Centre. In 1989, the national training school was disestablished. In 2001 the then Disability Minister announced the closure of New Zealand’s major institutions. Deinstitutionalisation of the centre was completed in 2006.

SPECIAL PEOPLE: Norma and Ken Swain with their ‘son’ Brent, who joined the family because he loved them. This family photo was taken in the late 1980s. Ken continues. “We had a meeting with the managers, to see if he really wanted to leave. They asked about his job, the local music club he belonged to, his friends.” Brent’s reply sealed his fate. “I like going to all these places, I love living in Levin with Ken and Norma.” In no time he was back where he loved to be, with people who loved him.

Brent worked in Te Whanau and on the owner’s forestry block as well. He met the Bishop family. Builder Wayne Bishop offered Brent a job. He has been with Wayne since 1995 but Brent’s story doesn’t finish there. The Swain’s eldest son Grant was killed in a car accident in 1995. In 2008 Brent announced he wanted to become a Swain. “I can’t replace Grant,” he told Ken and Norma, “but I want

Get ready for worst by going to exhibition By FRANKIE WEBB

National Get Ready Week runs from next week, September 21 to 27, helping people and businesses prepare for a civil emergency. From Wednesday, September 24 Te Takere Community Centre will host a four-day exhibition. Features include displays from Civil Defence and Emergency Management, emergency services, social support and other essential services. It finishes with an open day on Saturday from 10am to 4pm. The final day promises plenty of interaction, education and entertainment, according to Horowhenua Emergency Management Officer Ross Brannigan. A “not-to-be-missed” natural hazards DVD will play repeatedly in Te Takere's open meeting room. Emergency services equipment and vehicles will be on display. A free seminar on disaster recovery for business information and communications technology conducted by Spark Digital solutions and systems specialists is scheduled for Thursday. To book a space contact council's Economic Development Manager Shanon Grainger on (06) 366-0999 or shanong@horowhenua.govt.nz. Despite regular publicity and warnings, Police have identified more than 150 people in New Zealand who have sent nearly $4 million to scammers. Some continue to send money even after they have been warned. Horowhenua Age Concern held a “How to avoid being scammed (ripped off) seminar” last month which was so well supported some people missed out. “Unfortunately some people didn’t realise it was on until after the seminar,” said Age Concern activities co-ordinator Robynne Merwood. “We would be happy to source some funding for another seminar depending on numbers interested.” Police believe there are new mail-outs being sent throughout the country two

or three times a month. The scammers constantly rebrand their ‘product', many ripoffs involve the offer of travel. Some relate to inheritances, lottery wins, investment groups. It is common for people to lose $20,000 to $30,000 at a time. The victims are told that many of the fees are refundable. Some victims have been warned by Police they are being scammed but continue sending money until their funds are exhausted, some send `one last payment' to release ‘winnings' — they never receive. Police advise if it seems too good to be true, it almost certainly is. To register interest in a local seminar contact Horowhenua Age Concern by Ph (06) 367-2181 or email avs@ageconcernhoro.co.nz

Alaska. And of course food and wine are always highlights on any World Journeys tour!

Travel is more than just ticking off the sights on the well-trodden tourist trail. It’s about experiencing culture, local cuisine, new melodies and fascinating people. World Journeys has put together a range of escorted tours with just this in mind.

LIFE SAVER A defibrillator is a simple-to-use unit designed to analyse the heart rhythm of a patient who may be undergoing cardiac arrest. The machine will advise the user whether a shock is required. Defibrillators are designed to be used by lay people, who require little training to operate them correctly. They are usually limited in their interventions to delivering high joule shocks for VF (ventricular fibrillation) and VT (ventricular tachycardia) rhythms. ■ Would you know where to find a defibrillator in Horowhenua if you needed one in an emergency? On www.AEDlocations.co.nz there is a list but local St John’s would like to update the list for Horowhenua. Anyone who has a defibrillator is asked to contact the secretary of St John’s Area Committee for confirmation. She would particularly like to hear from people in Shannon, Foxton and Foxton Beach, Tokomaru and Levin. Ph 367-8274 or email jandaoconnor@clear.net.nz

Forget the one-country-per-day coach tours because small group travel today can immerse you in some of the world’s most exciting, challenging and exotic countries. If you are looking at travelling to the likes of South America and Africa in particular it’s the way to go! You may not have friends who share your travel ‘bucket list’ and you don’t want to travel alone. Perhaps tackling a foreign language is daunting, or you just don’t have the energy to do all of the planning and organising yourself. And dealing with tipping can be a challenge for us Kiwis. Booking a small group tour with a host to smooth the way takes care of all of that. The maximum group size on these World Journeys tours is 24, and all tours in their 2015 brochure are guaranteed to depart, with a tour host from New Zealand. A seamless travel experience, everything from flights to 4-star hotels, sightseeing and plenty of meals are arranged and included.

Most of all, people love the conviviality of group travel. There’s company if you want it, and time to do your own thing. Every person brings something to the mix - there may be a keen photographer in the group who can give you some tips, or an epic shopper who masters haggling in the markets. Life-long friendships have been forged on tour, and many return to travel again, together. Travel is all about the journey, but it’s also about sharing the experience, and that’s the beauty of travelling with a group. United Travel Levin have sent a number of very happy travellers on World Journeys group tours and for solo travellers, there are some great options to travel at the “share twin” price. As well as all that, we have a very special offer from World Journeys where you can save $400 per couple if you book by 31 October 2014, so come in and let us show you the huge and diverse range of options. What’s coming up in Levin?...On the 30th of this month at 5.30pm, we will be holding another instore Information Evening, showcasing European River Cruising with Uniworld. Always entertaining, Greg from Uniworld will present the 2015 itineraries and earlybird specials for this boutique river cruising specialist. Light refreshments are served so bookings are essential. Call Sue today for your place.

Destinations include favourites such as East Africa, India, and the iconic ports of the Mediterranean. Some are cruise-based with touring at either end – anyone fancy a sojourn at Italy’s Lake Como? Other tours take roads less travelled such as Persia & the Silk Road! The Mediterranean is ever popular, as is the majestic splendour of Canada &

Holiday family fun at Te Takere If you’re thinking ahead to the school holidays, look at spending some time in your local library where another great holiday programme has been planned. It’s Blue September, a time to raise awareness about prostate cancer, and money for research into the disease. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer effecting New Zealand men and the third most common cause of cancer death in men after lung cancer and bowel cancer. More than 3000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year. Statistics show that one in 10 men will develop prostate cancer in their lifetime. On Monday, as part of Blue September, Corys Electrical general manager Steve Priest and commercial manager Marcel Van der Park will hit the road in a completely restored Austin Mini to visit all 44 Corys Electrical branches across the country to raise awareness and funds for prostate cancer. The pair will be arriving in Levin on Tuesday September 23 at 7.30am for a breakfast barbecue outside Corys Electrical on Oxford Street for an hour. Last year they raised $35,000. This year they have $50,000 in their sights. The Prostate Cancer Foundation of NZ encourages all men aged over 40 to have an annual prostate check. If you are aged over 50 then consider an annual prostate check that includes both a PSA blood test and digital rectal examination (DRE).

A centre of artistic activity By FRANKIE WEBB Dorothy Burt, Joan Keogh and Katy Harding were the frontline campaigners, movers and shakers in getting the Horowhenua a Community Art Centre. The doors opened on April 12, 2008. It is an art hub, exactly as the pioneers wanted it to be. “There’s very few days we have nothing happening here,” Dorothy said. While the official club day is Wednesday, members and non-members can be found participating in art classes on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays. “We are planning an open day in November,” Dorothy said. “A day to let the community see what an amazing facility we have, and to see the calibre of work being produced here.” On Monday morning artist Neil Perfect conducts drawing classes, while in the afternoon watercolourist Lynne

Neustroski shares her knowledge and skills. Tuesday morning is open to all and Neil Perfect conducts an evening class that same day. On Wednesdays and Thursdays members are able to use the studio, and on Friday mornings Dorothy Burt holds painting classes. “We try to open the gallery whenever we have someone available to man it,” Dorothy said. A fundraiser is planned for November in the form of a Craft and Farmers market. “The building is getting older, it is well used, and not surprisingly needs some maintenance,” she said. “We want to keep the February Art in the Park free, it is not a fundraiser, it is a thank you to the public and we want it to stay that way.” Horowhenua Art Society gallery and studio is at 119 Bath Street, Levin.

Levin man helped Wales get in touch By FRANKIE WEBB Welsh touch rugby has a lot to thank New Zealand for. It was Levin’s David Swain who organised the first tournament in 1990 at Cardiff High School Old Boys RFC. Swain has lived in Wales ever since. That first tournament saw 24 male teams in three divisions of eight, one being a vets (over 35) division. Since then the Cardiff tourney has progressively grown, now having almost 100 teams registered. Swain and Kiwi Paul Nepia, (who died in 1998), great nephew of the legendary George Nepia, set up a Turnkey tournament that ran for two years at the Swansea Uplands RFC in Swansea with 16 teams. Nepia established Britain's top men's side the Kiwi Dragons of Cardiff, who went on to win the national Welsh men's and mixed open trophy. The Welsh Touch Association was established by Swain, Bay of Plenty ex-pat Dean Kidd and Welsh locals Neil Perkins and Gwion Kennard. Wales has gone on to send teams around the world, including New

Levin Master Swimm m e r s C lu b Who are Levin Master Swimmers? We are a diverse mixture of people: our swimming abilities cover a wide range from beginners to world ranked. Some of us like to keep fit, some have goals to improve their performance, some want help with their technique, some just want to have fun! Actually all of us want to have fun. But the one thing we share is a love of the water, be it fresh, salty or chlorinated.

We have a proud club history that goes back 33 years. Each May we hold an Autumn Meet that brings together about 70 swimmers from around the region for a fun night of swimming and socialising afterwards.

EARLY HOLDEN ENTHUSIASTS CLUB (Central Region)

The Early Holden Enthusiasts Club (Central Region) was formed in 2005 after a small group of early Holden owners in Palmerston North advertised and invited other similar vehicle owners to join them. From those small beginnings has evolved into a well established and recognized Holden club. The club successfully organised and hosted the 2011 Holden Nationals in Palmerston North. Profit from the running of that event was gifted back to the community. The club is a member of the Holden Federation of Clubs NZ Inc. and within the district, values the support of Robertson Holden, Palmerston North as principal club sponsor. http://www.robertsons.co.nz/ Members come from all over the lower North Island (Wanganui, Manawatu, Wairarapa, Kapiti and Wellington) and have no fixed ‘home’ location. Regular club runs are made to a variety of regional locations, as well as other Holden club and general open car shows.

CLUB CONTACTS President – Alan Barr Phone: 04 5273330 | Email: alan_barr@xtra.co.nz Vice President – John Braddock Phone: 04 2933326 | Email: john.braddock@paradise.net.nz

For newcomers we are happy to give technical advice, through informal clinics. This includes help with dives, turns and the different swimming strokes. Even established members regularly use these to brush up on technique! When you’re ready the club will support you taking part in any of the available events: from fun/chocolate fish meets, to postal meets, to official national championships. These can be local, regional, national or international. If this sounds like you – come join us. Phone Club Captain on 021 2073042

CENTRAL BOWLING CLUB LEVIN INC

T-Ball or Softball a go

is one of twelve in the Lower North Island where petanque is played (Petanque is French for bowls/ boules). It is a good game for physical fitness as it is low impact. You use three steel boules and the game is similar to lawn bowls except boules are smaller and you lob them into the air to land as close as possible to the cochonet (jack). Regardless of whether you play as a social pastime or become a competitive player, petanque is a fantastic game and all our members recommend it. We regularly host Regional and National tournaments as well as holding our own Mid-winter triples, Guy Fawkes Doubles (for men only) and an Eighty Plus Melee which last year attracted 18 entries from Horowhenua, Kapiti, Otaki and Manawatu clubs. Dress is casual, and flat shoes are recommended. Boules are available to borrow. New members of any age are welcome – just come along and say Hi. You will quickly feel at home. Is your teen living up to their potential? Are they board? We can keep them busy! The mission of cadets is to develop confident, responsible young citizens who are valued within their community by providing them, within a military framework, safe, enjoyable and challenging opportunities. They learn discipline, leadership, practical skills (sailing, rowing, knot tying, drill, shooting etc) and have regular opportunities to visit other units, go on camps, participate in regattas and spend time on Naval vessels. Our training programme runs on Tuesday nights and most Sundays. Through this they can earn NZQA credits which can be used towards NCEA. Cadets do not need to be sports minded or physically fit. Many teenagers find cadets a good alternative if they are not “sporty”. Teens with disabilities are welcomed and the activities and programmes can be modified to suit their individual needs. ***For this year only we can accepted those 12.5 years old – normally you need to be 13-15!****

The club is well set up to continue these strong performances into the future with the development of the indoor training centre that will also house our new club rooms and changing facilities at Donnelly Park. Season starts in mid October with trainings due to start late September

The development and support of players has been a strong focus of the club with a number of players going on to higher honours. In recent years Levin Old Boys have contributed more than half the players in Horowhenua-Kapiti 1st XI, with some going on to higher representative levels with Central Districts A and Age-grade sides. Streamline Swim School enables our Horowhenua kids to develop life long skills. With classes for toddlers through to adults, there is something for everyone. We have many families that come through swim school and watch their children grow, and become confident in the water. Zavier and Carter Sue both started swimming from a young age as part of Streamline Swim School. Zavier (8) has developed his swimming skills and from this his strength has improved, he is confident to be apart of swimming in school activities and able to lead as an example for his brother Carter (4). For

Zavier’s and Carter’s parents Kelly and Travis they are confident that both of the boys are attaining skills that are going to help them for the rest of their lives. Kelly says “The rapport that you build with the instructors and the staff its great, the personal approach to teaching the kids how to swim really makes us feel at home, its also great to watch the kids progress over time and celebrate those milestones together as a family.” Sign your child up for Streamline Swim School and like the Sue family see your children become confident in the water.

HAPPY FEET = FUN TIMES!

appy Feet is a Sequence Dancing group that just celebrated its 20th Birthday in August. It was started by the late Himi & Piki Heremaia and originally held in the Ihakara Hall. We moved to the Levin RSA in 2000 and have gone from strength to strength in the years since. Sequence Dancing is a very popular form of Social Dancing. Modern Sequence Dancing is based on the Ballroom and Latin Dancing style but everyone dances the same standardised sequences at the same time, making this an interesting and pleasurable activity. It is a great way to make new friends and keep mentally and physically active. The routines we dance are varied in complexity, but most of them are easy enough to pick up by joining in. We buy the latest quality dance music from the UK and believe our dance music library is second to none, with lots of well known tunes that we can sing along to as we dance.

We dance every Thursday evening at the Levin RSA commencing at 7pm with a tuition/revision session, then dance a mixed programme from 7.30p.m. til 10p.m. with supper provided during the evening. We also have a monthly Saturday Night dance that is very popular and attracts people from throughout the Wellington/Horowhenua/ Manawatu areas. We make regular donations to local charities and support groups as a way of giving any excess funds back to the community which has always been a source of pride to our members. Our aim has always been to introduce as many people as we can to the wonderful social activity that is sequence dancing. We are all about getting people on the floor and to show them how with a little perseverance, they can become very proficient dancers. Our dancers range in age from their 30’s to 90’s.There is no age limit – dancing keeps you young!

Green Acres the place to be Green Acres warmly welcomes Richard Mabey to the Kapiti Lawn and Garden Care team. Richard brings a huge amount of practical know-how, problem solving and customer service to his new business. A good example was a recent job where an absentee owner rang to get regular lawn mows, but wasn't aware his hedges were becoming overgrown — to the point of barely being able to see the driveway! Richard took pictures on his smartphone and emailed the quote, with the work completed within two days. Have a larger area of grass? Richard's pride and joy is his top of the range ride-

port plays a significant role in the culture of Coley Street School.

Academic, cultural and sporting achievement is widely celebrated at our school. Our students are offered the opportunity to stand tall in any or all of these aspects of school life along with many leadership opportunities.

Foxton’s Coley Street School COMMUNITY CONNECTION Our year 7/8 basketball team is currently unbeaten and our rugby players form the basis of the strong local Foxton Club Teams. The 60 strong cross-country team competed two weeks ago at the Kere Kere X country, and experienced considerable success with 25 major placings in all age groups

This sporting success is no accident, as we regularly aim to raise the bar in our school competitions. Some children are representing our school in 4-5 sports in a week and develop an all-round sporting ability.

Our junior hockey players in action

Our kapa haka leaders after their fantastic Coley Street School A Girls Netball Team who this term won performance at the Horowhenua Schools the Horowhenua wide year 7/8 Kapa Haka Festival competition and went unbeaten in the Kere Kere Schools competition.

This year our sport teams have enjoyed outstanding success with our A girls netball winning the local Kere Kere Competition and winning the Horowhenua School wide competition.

Our 5 hockey teams have all performed consistently well with one of our year 3/4 team coming runner up in their Saturday competition.

We also have our own interschool visits with teams from Manawatu, Horowhenua and Wairarapa Schools. Our Blue Light PCT team qualified to enter the national competition at the Porirua Police College at the end of the year.

Our staff is committed to our children’s participation but it is the massive input from our local parent/whanau and community that increases our success rate along with participation in local, regional and national competitions. Principal Peter Kemp says he sees his role to support sport through the week and every Saturday, with visits to local rugby grounds and Halliwell Turf to watch his hockey, soccer and netball teams play. “The kids get a great buzz from staff being there but also

SERVICE DIRECTORY

Green Acres “My name is David and I have two sons, Dylan aged eleven and Dagan aged nine. Being my own boss with Green Acres has allowed my work to fit into my lifestyle with the boys like a tee. It has been seven months since I started and I do not regret making the move to a more relaxed lifestyle. If you enjoy interacting and meeting new people, then this is the job for you. My customers are the most amazing people you could meet — one of the best parts of the job is the hospitality and build up of friendships. You work on your own, at your own speed and can put in the time to get the income suitable to your lifestyle. I love the job — especially in summer — but, hey, at the end of the day, you cannot have it both ways! If you want to take the pressure away and enjoy a more relaxed lifestyle with good management support, then consider a Green Acres franchise. I recommend it to anyone needing a change in life!” If this sounds like you, call us on 021 320-335 or visit www.greenacres.co.nz/ franchisee for more info!

New trophy a highlight of college football By TANYA WOOD The ‘beautiful game’ as it’s known — football (soccer) — wasn’t quite so pretty for Waiopehu College, crashing out in all three games against Horowhenua College in the annual Trevor Brooking tournament last week at Levin Domain. The two Levin college first XI boys’ teams have contested the Trevor Brooking Trophy since 1984 and Horowhenua took the signed football for a 14th year running with a 3-0 win over their longstanding rivals last Wednesday evening. Horowhenua went on to complete the hat-trick by retaining the Eastern and Central Community (EECT) Cup 4-0, played by the first XI girls teams,

and winning the Tesh Gallagher Memorial Salver 1-0, competed for the first time this year by the under-15 boys’ teams. The Memorial Salver was donated by Nick Bailey, whose daughter was goalie for Waiopehu, in memory of former college student Tesh (Leticia) Gallagher, who died at age 18 from bacterial meningitis in 2012. Parents Mark and Lisa Gallagher knew nothing about the salver until the Friday before the match. “We were quite chuffed. It was very emotional watching the game and the presentation afterwards, we both had tears in our eyes,” said Mark. Their eldest son was playing in the under-15 Waiopehu boys’ team for the first time. “It’s just a shame they didn’t win it, they tried, it

was a close game.” Mark’s father donated the original Trevor Brooking Trophy, a football signed by the former West Ham United and England team player while visiting New Zealand in 1983. Mark is also heavily involved with local football, including coaching Nick Bailey’s daughter and half the under-15 players who were on the field that evening. Mark hoped the salver would be around as long as the Trevor Brooking Trophy. Waiopehu College sports coordinator Amanda Pearson said its teams were ‘ropeable’ about losing all three matches but conceded the ‘west side’ college was one step ahead the whole time. “It’s particularly gutting as the boys held off Horowhenua nil-all

The EECT Cup has been won a comparable number of times by both colleges since 1997. Gary O’Brien, teacher in

charge of football and first XI boys’ coach at Horowhenua College, said their teams competed regularly in tournaments and that had showed on the night. The organisers wanted to thank Palmerston North referees Shannon Smith, David Lawrie, Antony Riley and Michael Thomson for refereeing the matches.

It was all on at the Horowhenua Events Centre on Saturday as nine under-12 basketball representative teams clashed on court. Teams from Hawke’s Bay, Wanganui, Palmerston North and four from Levin battled it out. Levin selection trials produced a boys and three girls teams. It was through no lack of effort that the local boys failed to make the final, showing some great ball handling skills and fancy footwork. The boys final was eventually contested by Palmerston North and Wanganui. In a tight final, Palmerston North claimed the title.

Levin girls featured in their final. Sharp shooting and good tactics saw them battle it out with Hawke’s Bay. The visitors weren’t prepared to go home emptyhanded proving just too strong for the locals. Organiser Lyndal Tanira said the day went pretty much without a hitch. “I did have someone ask if I would organise another day in November, but I think we’ll make it an annual event,” she said. “It was all good clean play, pretty much injury free and plenty of support for all the teams.” ■ More photos: Page 26 LVN190914fwbb2
