In response to letters ‘Mayor defended' and ‘Council defended', Cr Campbell and Cr Feyen involved themselves in two projects (the Tokomaru water scheme and the Shannon waste water scheme) before they were removed from the projects committee by Mayor Duffy. I find it intriguing that our chief executive (David Clapperton who was delighted with their performance) acknowledges that their intervention in these projects saved Horowhenua District Council in excess of $12 million (eventually costing just under 20 per cent of what council had previously budgeted). Add to this that it was all achieved years before the council allotted timeline. “Remarkable!” Before these two gentlemen arrived on the scene, council projects habitually blew their budgets ‘spectacularly' (eg Council chambers $6.5m became $11.2m), and we all remember Mayor Duffy proclaiming (on Campbell Live) how Tokomaru will have to wait until at least 2025 for their water upgrade. Perhaps while Crs Bishop and Mason are still in their defensive mode they might like to explain; Why they are attempting to take the credit for crs Feyen and Campbell's hard work on our previously neglected infrastructure? Why this enormous saving of ratepayer money infuriated Mayor Duffy so much? Where was that extra $12m of our money going to go — if they had not intervened? And finally what on earth makes you think that either of you would be privy to any alleged corruption within the organisation? You would be kept in the dark — Just like the rest of us! Council ruckus

Re: Councillors Speak Out (October 17 Horowhenua Chronicle): “It must be getting very embarrassing for our council staff when they have to hear the children playing at being leaders of our community.” It is perceived that six out of

Mayor’s reply to readers’ letters I appreciate the opportunity to respond to letters regarding Horowhenua District Council, but I'm sure I speak on behalf of our community in saying that, quite frankly, we've had a gutsful of negative rhetoric from a very few ill-informed individuals. There will always be naysayers and grievances, real and imagined. Special interest groups will always believe they should take priority — but this is a democracy. When attacks on Council are made without specifics, unstated accusations and downright nastiness wrapped in halftruths, an informed response is needed. Firstly, Council cannot do what it likes. The basic underpinnings of local government are set out for all to see in the Local Government Act and council Standing Orders which must be adhered to and recorded. Meetings must follow those established protocols, or there is a risk of anarchy. Meetings that take place between monthly formal meetings are commonplace, as they are on every committee, trust or board throughout the country. They are not secret enclaves hellbent on mischief. They are needed to provide all councillors with information so they fully understand the myriad of components that make up our complex industry. In Council, there is no room for pre-school sandpit scraps — this is adult

decision-making within the bounds of the democratic process, and as Mayor I make no apology for making constructive decisions and being decisive. Council has an obligation to the whole district. In the past decade our council has worked hard to transform and improve the district, and the job is ongoing. The need to modernise infrastructure and improve assets and amenities have had to be addressed. Tough decisions have had to be made and consensus sought under difficult circumstances. Take our water supplies, for example. Many councillors were less than satisfied with the timelag for improvements due to the high costs involved. But thanks to diligent research by Council officers, accelerated improvements were possible through new, cost-effective water treatment options. For two of our water treatment upgrades, Shannon and Foxton, we successfully sought subsidy from the Ministry of Health. This was not because of ratepayer agitation or pressure from councillors, but an example of council staff using their initiative and dedication to find solutions — a different ‘truth’ from that offered by a few people in our community. Most people who stand for Council do so in order to make things better for the greatest number. They might have a particular area of interest but inevitably blend

as a team that works hard and deals with a range of complex issues that have to be prioritised and paid for. Horowhenua District Council can point to a formidable list of achievements over the past few years, such as Te Takere; upgraded water supplies for Shannon, Foxton and Foxton Beach; Playford Park; the pipeline to the POT; Levin Main street; the Lake Horowhenua Accord; the jetty upgrade at Foxton Beach. Upcoming projects include upgrading Shannon Wastewater upgrades; Te Awahou Nieuwe Stroom; and upgrades to Tokomaru and Levin water supplies. I and all councillors, together with Council's CEO and staff, are proud to represent and work for this community. Horowhenua is poised to experience growth not seen since the 1970s and 80s. It will require creativity, community-wide team building, a long term vision for our future and strong leadership. It is my intention to make our Council a tool for positive growth and change. It is my strong belief that the vast majority of our wonderful community want me and Council to take a positive, proactive approach to improving the well-being of the Horowhenua, and not focus on the few negative residents hellbent on undermining the positive image of the best rural lifestyle in New Zealand. BRENDAN DUFFY JP, District Mayor

the seven who are strongly defending both the processes and the mayor, had his endorsement when they stood for office at the last local body elections — not sure about the other one. Mayor Duffy is quite correct; he did act within the rules under the Local Government Amendment Act 2012, section 41A Role and powers of mayors. He can do almost anything he likes but he also is personally responsible and liable for mis-

management of council funds. He cannot blame the other office holders or council staff. Under section 14 (1) (a) (i) and (b) he also is meant to conduct council business in an open, transparent, and democratically accountable manner, and should have regard to the views of all of its communities. If Mayor Duffy really did not want members of the community to speak on issues that were on the open council meeting

agenda for 1 October, he could have held any discussion or decision to be made behind closed doors like he would normally do. Horowhenua really needs an open council; is it time for our community to request that the government bring in commissioners to manage our District? A wave of females in pink at Shannon A wave of pink took over the car park opposite the Shannon Railway Station last Sunday as women decked out in pink and driving American V8s stopped for a break. The group included 12 members of the Tararua Rodders who were taking part in the annual women's only V8 car cruise organised by Lynette Siden from Lower Hutt. The run in aid of a Breast Cancer Charity raised $510 and was a hit with everyone involved. Leaving from the Hutt Valley, the run picked up cars en route, including 12 Tararua Rodders Cars with approximately 26 ladies, either members, partners or friends of the club. The locals met the group in Kimberley Road for the last part of the journey to Shannon Railway Station. A total of 46 cars, some from as far away as Auckland and Taupo, and the Palmerston North and Wellington areas, assembled.

Stage set for big future By TANYA WOOD Channelling her ‘inner maniac’, playing one of MacBeth’s witches, has set Horowhenua College student Vikatolia Finau on her first steps towards treading the boards of the famous London Globe Theatre. Vikatolia’s outstanding performance in MacBeth, set in a mental asylum, saw her selected for a place on the Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand (SGCNZ) National Shakespeare Schools Production, a weeklong workshop held at Otago University last month. It follows on from the college’s earlier success winning the SGCNZ University of Otago Sheilah Winn Shakespeare regional festival in April, for the MacBeth student directed scene, and two awards at the national festival in June. The Year 12 drama student was one of 48 students chosen for the workshop from hundreds who performed at the national festival. Half of those students are chosen to attend a three-week course at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London and while Vikatolia missed out this time, due purely to her age, she has been encouraged to try again next year. According to Vikatolia, whether she was selected or not for the London trip, the week in Dunedin was the “best week ever, seriously” and she is already planning for next year. “We learned heaps, we got to perform, we were told we would make friends that we’d treasure

At first I was a sceptical about that happening in a week but I got there and ‘bam’, I cried when I had to come back.” She said the workshops were amazing, covering all aspects of stagecraft, including singing and dancing, by professional tutors at the university. “It was pretty cool and we had Clara van Wel who won New Zealand’s Got Talent in our group

Vikatolia got to channel her “inner dude” as a soldier in Henry V, directed by Colin Spicer, a professional actor, playwright and director from the UK. Vikatolia said she drew on movies for her ‘bad guy’ soldier persona. “Bad guys show how powerful they are by just standing still.” She said the whole experience was so much fun, and Shakespeare is so “cool” that she wants her whole senior class to do a Shakespearean play next year. “I want everyone to experience it and maybe get a chance like I did.” She wanted to thank everyone who had supported her and in particular sponsors, a local Levin business, Life to the Max and Project CYN. Horowhenua College head of drama Faith Perry, who introduced the college to the Shakespeare festivals four years ago, said it has been wellsupported by Maori and Pasifika drama students, since day one. “All our students have made a huge contribution to the Shakespeare festival and for me as the drama teacher it was particularly thrilling that this door opened for Vikatolia. Her success has really inspired, in particular, the other Pasifika performing arts students in the college.” Grant Congdon, starting his first week as Horowhenua College’s new principal, said he was proud of Vikatolia’s achievement, which would be celebrated in the college.

Join in the fun, come for a run The Foxton Lions Club have organised a fun charity run taking place on Sunday November 2, from 9am. Those taking part can choose to run 20km, run or walk a 10km or 5km course along Foxton Beach. Kathy McMillan Horowhenua District Council Recreation Planner said hundreds of locals were getting ready to take part in the event. “It’s great for all ages and all levels of fitness with a distance to suit everyone. “Whether you’re a seasoned runner or you want to get out and have a lovely stroll along the beach with friends and family, this event is perfect. Running and walking on the beach is also great for your body as you don't get the impact on your joints like you do walking or running on roads or footpaths,” Kathy said. NEWS IN BRIEF $1200 for charity

BLUE BEAT

Altrusa Club of Levin raised $1200 for the Sweet Louise Charitable Trust. Local women supported a Pink Champagne Breakfast with Levin fashionista Lisa O’Neill, ambassador for the Trust, who came as guest speaker before an audience of 80 woman. The Sweet Louise Charitable Trust was formed in 2005 after Louise Perkins, 27, was diagnosed with breast cancer. The cancer spread to other parts of her body within two years, but she survived another 10

years. Her husband, Scott Perkins, established the Louise Perkins Foundation. The primary purpose of Sweet Louise is to improve the wellbeing and quality of life for New Zealanders living with secondary breast cancer.

Focus on diabetes

Central PHO and Manawatu Horowhenua Tararua Diabetes Trust have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to work together on improving the care of people with pre-diabetes and diabetes across the MidCentral

district. The MoU will help assist and support diabetes improvement plans across the region, utilising the complimentary range of skills and experience of both organisations. Adrian Broad, MHT Diabetes Trust manager, believes working in isolation is not an option for health providers these days. “We’re looking forward to the benefits of working closely together, which will result in better outcomes for people with diabetes and their families. It’s a very exciting and positive innovation.”

Graffiti is not art, and in most cases it is an offence of Wilful Damage and punishable by three months imprisonment or a $2000 fine. It has been a privilege over the last year or so to look around Levin and not see the graffiti that used to plague our community. It took a determined effort by a small group of mainly volunteers, who led the way by painting out new tags and working with building owners to remove graffiti on their buildings. Sadly, there appears to be someone new who has begun tagging in the past few weeks, painting buildings and structures, particularly around the CBD and service lane. This is an unsightly and unwanted blight on our community, but fortunately, the volunteers are back to work removing the tags as quickly as they appear. The current tag appears to be a stylised SK with the letters 344, and police are attempting to identify the significance of the tags, to identify the offender. Police would like to hear from anyone who may have information. It has been some time since I have mentioned ‘scams', however this is not say that they have gone away, in fact quite the opposite. I came back from some annual leave to find a small pile of envelopes, emails and letters, all reporting scams in some form or another. What has been noticeable is the level of professionalism and

sophistication in a number of the letters received by local people. It now appears that the scammers are becoming more brazen, or perhaps desperate, as some of the names on letters do not even match the address given. Reading some of the letters, with the use of colour, quality of print, paper and compelling language, some people may be tempted to respond. Please don't. The latest raft of letters require the recipient to sent a ‘registration' fee, often $50 — $NZ75, that will “guarantee you a chance” to share in a vast fortune. Some of the less sophisticated emails and texts require you to send personal details, often bank account details, again so that you can share in ridiculous amounts of money. The warning signs are the same, they arrive unsolicited, often from overseas, they require you to send money, bank account or other personal details. The text of the letter or email will often purport to be from a solicitor or lawyer acting on behalf of a deceased estate and vast fortunes are tied up and need to be dispersed. Often in the less sophisticated attempts, language, grammar and spelling are poor, and are clearly not from an English speaking person.

YEAR 10 Waiopehu College students Nicole Thomas and Caleb Plumridge hold up the awards they have won, which sees them placed in the top 5 per cent and top 10 per cent, respectively, for science out of 20,000 global online competitors in the Education Perfect programme.

Waiopehu students and teachers excel online with BARRY PETHERICK principal This year our school has been involved with a programme called Education Perfect. It is an online learning, revision and assessment tool, using a unified learning platform that magnifies the value of a teacher in the classroom, accelerates student learning and motivates the individual to reach further and extend themselves. It is used by more than 300,000 students from 1100 schools worldwide. The Education Perfect suite is accessible from any computer with internet access and all content follows the Australian and New Zealand curriculum so students are learning content relevant to them. Global competitions are held throughout the year in a range of subjects.

Once teachers have registered and sent in their class lists students receive an individual login. By answering questions correctly, students receive points which go towards awards and prizes. Nicole Thomas (Year 10) has received a Silver Award for science, which places her in the top 5 per cent of 20,000 competitors globally and Caleb Plumridge (Year 10) received a Bronze

Award for science – placed in the top 10 per cent. Nicole was also placed in the top 20 per cent of 20,000 global competitors for mathematics. The following teachers have qualified at different levels in their subject areas in Education Perfect out of 10,000 teachers registered online. Glen Langvad (science) and Jake Easton (science) qualified at Level 2 which puts them in the top 10 per cent of more than 10,000 teachers globally. Dave Stout (languages), Chris Janes (science) and Paul Sullivan (science) qualified at Level 1 — in the top 50 per cent. With a growing emphasis on online learning and data analysis of student progress, a high level of proficiency with digital resources is a valuable skillset. I am sure this valuable asset will continue to be used by both students and teachers to promote learning in the future.

One lucky local, Quinton Tatana, did not only walk away with one of Robyn’s perfectly cooked sausages, he also won an $899 Husqvarna lawnmower. Gary Anderson said the event went well with a steady stream of people coming to their open day at the Hokio Beach Road shop.

While Saturday was not the best day to be thinking of getting out in the garden, it was a great time to get down to Anderson’s Outdoor Machinery and talk to the experts about everything from a chainsaw to a ride on mower, while enjoying a free barbecue.

Rolex and Vintage Watches Wanted

re 1950’s mechanical watches are needed urgently by the buyers from John Bertrand (Collectables) Ltd, visiting Levin and Foxton next Tuesday. “Collectors at this stage want brands such as Rolex, Omega, Patek Philippe, Vacheron & Constantin just to mention some. These brands can command large prices depending on the condition, what they are made of etc. Many of the other brands are only required for parts. “In any event we will buy any mechanical watch, even if its only a few dollars for parts” said Tony Grant, buyer for the company. Battery operated watches are not needed. “If you are unsure just bring any watches to us at the venues and have them appraised” he said.

Some Big Dollars in Early Banknotes

New Zealand trading bank dated 1932 or before. Denominations of five pounds and higher would be worth from $700. “Any banknote dated prior to 1900 would be worth at least $1000” said Mr Grant. Also purchased are any Reserve Bank of New Zealand pre-decimal issues, especially 50 Pound notes. All overseas banknotes prior to the 1950’s are also wanted.

Huge Demand for Military Medals

C

urrently, throughout the world there is a very big demand by collectors for Military Medals. These cover all wars right through from the New Zealand Land Wars and the Boer War, to the First and Second World Wars and the later Korea and Vietnam conflicts. New Zealand Servicemen and Women first served overseas in the Boer War in South Africa around 1900 and the Military Medals awarded for this service are needed by the buyers, as are any other Medals from early New Zealand and the New Zealand Wars. General service medals from both the First and Second World Wars will also be purchased, but as can be imagined these were awarded in fairly large numbers. “If a group of medals has any special award for bravery such as the Military Medal, Military or Flying Cross or other medals for Distinguished Conduct or Meritorious Service, these can add great value to a group” stated Mr Tony Grant, buyer for John Bertrand (Collectables) Ltd. “Many families have old medals, some dating back to early Imperial days, that they are not sure what to do with. We will be happy to look at any Military Medals whatsoever, just bring them in to venues” he said.

Old Coins Can Toss Up a Rarity

C

heck those drawers and cupboards, you may have a rarity lurking amongst your coins. This advice from Tony Grant, buyer for John Bertrand (Collectables) Ltd. “We want to see any old foreign coin accumulations put together before 1950. We will be quite happy to go through your coins on the spot and give you an idea of what we can pay. You just never know what can turn up! New Zealand silver coins up to 1946 will be purchased at 10 times their face value.

Tots earn their caps By TANYA WOOD A group of three-year-olds took their first steps on what is hoped to be the start of many graduation ceremonies to come. Dressed as their favourite Disney character, or in a miniature red cap and gown if they could be persuaded to change, 20 tots received their graduation certificates from the Born to Learn/Ahuru Mowai programme last Friday. Marking three years for both children and parents taking part in the programme, the young graduates were presented with a certificate and T-shirt printed with ‘I was born to learn’ and ‘He Rangitira Mo Apopo’ (a leader for tomorrow) at the Levin Events Centre, watched by proud parents and whanau. Ahuru Mowai/Born to Learn is delivered through the Family Start programme, run by Te Runanga o Raukawa. It aims to make parents the first and most important teachers in their children’s lives, helping them understand and support their children’s development. Early childhood sector manager Makareta Moffatt said the day was about celebrating great parenting, focusing on the achievements of the tamariki (children) meeting the expected developmental milestones for their age. She said Ahuru Mowai/Born to Learn, funded by Family and Community Services, part of the Ministry of Social Development, helps Te Runanga o Raukawa meet its aspirations of the kaupapa tuku iho (framework of support for whanau). The graduation ceremonies have been running for about 10 years.

Emily Hartley, 3, wanted to dress up as a pirate for her graduation. According to mum Rebecca, 22, her daughter was not interested in being a fairy or a princess. The Levin solo mum has been in the Born to Learn/Ahuru Mowai programme since Emily was eight months old. “It’s educational for parents, learning how important certain aspects of development are for kids, and learning how their little brains tick.” She said it’s cool to know help and advice is always just “a text away” when she needs it. “Anyone who is a parent knows it’s not an easy job, there are no set rules, and it’s really good to have that validation that we are doing well. Being a parent is about trial and error.” One thing she has learned, especially when Emily is having a tantrum, is to stay calm. “Easier said than done some days, but kids feed off how you are feeling and we’re given a set of tools to cope with different situations.” She said the staff have also been invaluable helping her find the right support groups and meeting up with other young mums, and even helping with getting her home insulated.

Buoyed by bowls

LVN241014splBowls

PETER Brown and Jenny Watt have become keen bowlers after going to Levin Bowls Club’s Have-a-Go at bowls day. Peter Brown and his partner, Jenny Watt, moved to Levin from Wellington in June last year and were looking for a sport they would enjoy and be able play when Peter retires in about a year. They started looking at bowls and went along to the Have-a-Go at bowls day at the Levin Bowls Club last October. There, they found a club where they could play all year round at a moderate cost and enjoy the fellowship of others with a similar interest. Quickly becoming keen bowlers, Peter and Jenny trialled for the Kapiti Coast junior reps within their first season of playing. Peter won the club’s novice singles and was runner-up in the Kapiti Coast Centre event. Originally from Dundee in Scotland, Peter, a former footballer for the Wellington Diamond United club, has adapted quickly to playing bowls. Jenny, while having not played any sport since her schooldays, is also a rapid learner and made great progress in her first season. Only last weekend, Jenny made it to the last eight of the club’s women’s handicap singles and was there to support Peter, a finalist in the men’s balloted pairs championship. This Sunday, Levin Bowls will again have its club facilities open from 1-4pm for its Have-a-Go at bowls day. Bowls is a sport for people of all ages, so everyone is welcome. All you need to bring is a pair of flat-soled shoes.

Sallies start new KC motors delighted with expo Christmas event By FRANKIE WEBB Levin’s Avenue of Trees has been a five year tradition in Horowhenua but this year the Salvation Army Levin is taking a different approach. “We still want to give a gift to this great community, but we’re going to try something a bit different this year,” said Lieutenant Chris Collings. “Essentially, it’s about the community getting together, singing carols and taking some time out from busy schedules to think about the meaning of Christmas.” There will not be the emphasis on local businesses sponsoring trees, as had been the case with the Avenue of Trees, but there will still be an opportunity for sponsored trees to be used as part of the stage dressing. This year the Levin Salvation Army will host Carols with the Angels in their Durham Street carpark. It will be a community Christmas carol evening with all the old favourite carols. The Salvation Army organising team are confirming acts to be involved. “It is shaping up to be quite an event,” Lieutenant Collings said. “We look forward to having a car park full of locals, ready to sing themselves hoarse as they all look forward to Christmas.” Carols with the Angels is on Sunday December 21, starting at 8pm. There will be an opportunity to donate food to the Levin Foodbank, everyone is invited.

AVENUE OF TREES The Avenue Of Trees began in 2009, as a Levin Salvation Army initiative inviting local organisations to decorate Christmas trees in whatever theme they chose. From the beautiful to the bizarre, every tree told a story. Entering a tree was free, strolling up the Avenue cost the donation of a can of food for Levin Foodbank. The first Avenue attracted 40 exhibitors, last year more than 60 were on board.

Friday and Saturday of last week. He said, being a new event for the company, no one was really sure how it would go. “After day one it was obvious there was a lot of interest in the wide range of machinery that was available through the company.”

Mr McCormick said Tatum Park’s location on State Highway 1 was perfect, and the park’s setting offered a great expansive area to display their equipment and allow them to mingle with prospective clients. He said KC Motors’ first Fielday Expo was an event that they can build on.

Fabulous Foxton It’s time for the Spring Fling By

FRANKIE WEBB frankie.webb@chronicle.co.nz Foxton Spring Fling has been a highlight of the Horowhenua calendar for decades and it’s on this Sunday. With more than 150 stalls booked, Main Street will be absolutely buzzing. “This year has been incredible,” Foxton Tourist and Development Association President, Paul Andrews said. “We are fully booked with almost a third more stalls than we’ve ever had before, the interest has been huge, everyone is in for a treat.” Entertainment will be running all day with variety being the key. “Kodama Japanese Drum Team will perform,” Paul said. “Kate Martin Dance studio will delight the audience with an excerpt from Alice in Wonderland, and bands to perform include national award winners ReZist along and ever popular local group GravelTrax.” Whatever your taste in cuisine, there is something to whet the appetite. International cuisine and good old Kiwi fair fare is a huge feature this year. “Mussel fritters, seafood chowder, hot dogs and authentic hangi food will be available alongside traditional American, Greek and German food,” said Paul. “You would be hard-pressed not to find something to suit your taste.” If you don’t enjoy juggling your food as you eat, there is ample cafe style seating. All the favourite amusements and rides have rebooked this year along with a selection of new attractions. Horizontal bungee, giant bumper balls, mini hot rods and a giant slide will delight the young and young at heart. If you’re feeling lucky, or even if you’re not, it could be your lucky day. There are hundreds of spot prizes and giveaways. Firesafe mascots Amber and Flint will appear with a team from the Foxton Beach Volunteer Fire Brigade, the wonderful Coastguard team who keep our shores safe are on display, along with Stock Cars,

Moving from the metropolis of Auckland to Foxton is a huge step but Karen Graves has taken it in her stride and considers herself a local. Leaving Auckland was just half the challenge. After almost 30 years in the teaching profession, Karen decided to fulfil a dream and open a new shop in a new town. Foxton’s Flax Gift Gallery was born and 12 months later it has grown and developed into an amazing treasure trove. “This is a dream that has lived up to, no, actually has surpassed, expectations for me,” Karen said. “This is my niche.” Stock is definitely testimony to the fact it is. “When I first opened, locals thought I would be catering for the international tourist trade, they realise that’s not the case. I have something for pretty much everyone.” Anyone born in the baby boomer years will feel they’re walking along memory lane. “There’s a lot of Kiwiana, some of it is one-offs created here in Horowhenua,” Karen proudly clutches a crate of Foxton Fizz. “I wanted to have the gallery where everyone could find something they liked, and something within their budget.”

Fabulous Foxton Big focus on roading By FRANKIE WEBB Nathan Guy was returned for a third term as member of Parliament for Otaki, which includes Foxton and Foxton Beach. The National Party candidate and encumbent MP had a majority of 7782. Mr Guy said his focus for the next three years would be on maximising the local benefits from the Kapiti expressway, Transmission Gully, and

roading improvements north to Foxton which includes replacement of Foxton's Whirokino Trestle bridge. Pre-election the Government advised work could start as early as next year. Funding would come from the $212 million Future Investment Fund, earmarked for 14 regionally-important state highway projects including the Whirokino trestle replacement. “This will be a big bonus for the Foxton community during

construction, with workers spending locally,” Mr Guy said. “This is great news for motorists and the Horowhenua District.” Construction on the expressway will create around 1000 jobs, with a focus on training local people to carry them out. Mr Guy was reappointed as Minister for Primary Industries and Minister for Racing, moving up two places in the cabinet rankings to 14.

Fabulous Foxton Technology museum full of wonder By FRANKIE WEBB Thomas Edison’s voice boomed across the room. The National Museum of Audio and Visual Technology (MAVtech) in Foxton has received a very rare item. “We are very proud to have an original recording made by Thomas Edison,” MAVtech chairman Jim Harper said. “Even better, we have the equipment to be able to play it. I believe this may be the only one of these in existence.” Edison made the recording talking about the brave men who fought in World War I on to a cylindrical record. It is just one of some amazing pieces held at the museum, which is in great heart and open for business. The doors will be open for the Spring Fling, and anyone who hasn’t been there for a while definitely needs to visit. “We have had a huge sort out,” Jim said. “We’ve made the displays more user friendly, easier to follow.”

Radio Foxton

MAVtech is to house Radio Foxton 105.4FM which has been doing test broadcasts. It is currently off-air as they are in the process of transferring the transmitter and other parts of the station to MAVtech. “Guy Vincent, one of the original founders along with Ian Little (dec), is getting it up and running,” Jim said. “Guy worked in radio for decades, he has incredible knowledge, which he delights in sharing.” Volunteers Jan and Bob Saunders have been working behind the scenes, getting a space sorted for the station.

Fabulous Foxton LOOKING BACK

Parks and reserves Local historian and retired teacher, Tony Hunt, continues his story of Foxton’s history. Pockets of land throughout the Foxton district have interesting backgrounds. The largest and oldest is the Foxton Racecourse, which was set aside in 1869. Across the road from the Racecourse is Victoria Park which has had a variety of uses. A band rotunda which had been a feature of the park was, in 1904, converted into facilities for sports activities most often by athletics and cycling. North of the racecourse is the Target Reserve which has had many uses over the years. For the past 65 years it has been home to the Foxton Golf Course. Foxton has an exceptionally wide Main Street, this was to accommodate trains which used to run up the middle from Wharf Street north. There are pleasant open parklike spaces at each end. Ihakara Gardens, at the north end of Main Street, began life as the wahi tapu for local Maori. The burial of local Europeans on the site is most unusual but

has never caused any difficulties. In 1881 Ihakara Tukumaru was the last to be interred there. Ihakara Gardens were gifted to the Borough in 1919 and its present day shape developed. e.g. the neat rounded hill. Gardens were planted but generally fell into disrepair so in the 1990s the townsfolk did the plantings that are there now. The present day cemetery was opened in 1871. At the southern end of Main Street are the Seaview Gardens. In his 1937 Jubilee Booklet E W Huntley wrote “ . . . on the locality formally known as Ferry Hill . . . is a garden established in quite recent times and christened by the Borough Council “Seaview Park”. The Gardens are a pleasant spot. And a good deal frequented.” Borough Foreman Bill Neville was responsible for much of the development here. The area is now known as Seaview Gardens, though there is a case to revert to “Seaview Park”! Lying midway between the two gardens is Easton Park donated to the Borough by A S

Homemade weed sprays effective ■ Continued from Wednesday When I am hand-watering with a wand, I often wet down the soil, pull out weeds growing between plants and, because of the wet soil, they come away easily. Then I wash the soil off the roots and lay them onto the soil to break down. Watering daily keeps raised gardens and containers moist and progressively weed-free. In areas where there are cobbles, cracks or waste where you do not want anything to grow, use salt. Obtain a 25kg bag of salt from a stock and station agent and liberally apply. Salt can be used to kill Wandering Jew in areas with established trees and shrubs. Also, I am told that sprays of baking soda (likely at rates of three tablespoons per litre water) will also kill Wandering Jew. Gorse can be killed over time with heavy applications of garden lime. Vinegar and cooking oil are two cheap products that can also be used to spray weeds safely, but not preferred plants. Here is a suggestion for those that have recently purchased triple-grafted fruit trees. It is difficult in the early days of establishment to have all three grafts grow with the same vigour. Often one or two will leap ahead to the demise of the other, which may remain stunted or even die. The secret is to keep all three (or two) growing at the

Digging in WALLY RICHARDS same rate till they are well developed. If you cut back the dominant branches, they will just rebranch and become more vigorous. The key is to increase the growth of the inferior branch and a simple way to achieve this would be to spray its foliage with Vaporgard. This will allow the leaves to gather more energy from the sun and become stronger. Do not spray the dominate branches with Vaporgard as this would defeat the purpose. A further method could be applied by removing some leaves off the dominate branches, reducing their energy collect from sunlight. Lastly, many of you will be purchasing punnets, cell packs and pots of plants for planting out. If you want to give them a great start to establish, then spray the foliage all over with Vaporgard. This reduces moisture loss out of the foliage and takes the stress out of the transplanting. Then leave for a few hours to dry in a shaded spot. Next, soak the container by plunging into a bucket of nonchlorinated water until it stops bubbling.

WATERING: When you are hand-watering plants, it is a good time to remove weeds. This prevents damage to root systems when removing from the container. Place into the bottom of the planting hole some Rok Solid, Neem Granules and a few sheep manure pellets. This will help root

development and protect roots from soil insect pests, as well as feed the plant. Have a great gardening Labour weekend. ■ For gardening problems, ring me at 0800 466 464 (Palmerston North

A turn with the big guns By PETER FRANKLIN This weekend, speedway fans from near and far will head to Palmerston North for the annual running of the Robin Pratt Memorial, one of the most coveted titles of the season. Just what goes through a driver’s and the pit crew’s minds in the days leading up to the event? Good question. I was about to be given the chance to find out and have firsthand experience of the event from the inside, helping prepare the car and getting strapped in on race night. Talking to friends about going out there and doing the business on the night, brought an unexpected response from most; “At your age why would you?”. Well at 63, I'm far from past it, thank you very much. Call it ticking another thing off the bucket list. While I have had the pleasure of driving a stockcar in the annual stockcar invitation at Harrisville speedway, a great day out and not too serious, the Robin Pratt Memorial is a whole different kettle of fish. This race attracts the best stockcar drivers and they play for real. Once you drive through the pit gate there is no turning back and you don't have any allies to watch your back. It all came about one afternoon talking to Craig Rolston about the memorial race, he had lent me his

LVN241014splstock1

WELL it's too late to turn back, Peter Franklin is about to jump in the deep end and race with the best of the best at Palmerston North Speedway. No 331p car for the Harrisville event. It was in this race last year that he got a big hit resulting in a broken pelvis and the rest of the season off. Craig suggested that to get a true perspective of the buildup and race, was to do it. So my mission, starting this week, has been getting as much advice as possible from Craig and working on the car, basically cleaning all the mud off from my

excursion on to the Harrisville dirt. He loaded me up with spanners, pointed me towards the car and told me to make sure every nut, excluding myself, was tight. Wheels off, wheels on, etc, etc. The time has flown, it is now 24-odd hours to race time, how do I feel? Excited yes, nervous yes, ready to back out — not on your life. They tell me it is going to be a

case of when the green flag drops, all hell is going to break loose. If I can come out of the hell in one piece with an undamaged car, I will be one very happy chappy. So if you want to see what happens, head to Robertson Holden International Speedway and support your favourite Horowhenua drivers as they race for the pride of holding Foxton's Robin Pratt Memorial Cup high above their head.

Big excitment with miniature stock cars By PETER FRANKLIN Looking for some excitement this weekend? The Horowhenua Radio Controlled Speedway Club is hosting the New Zealand RC Stock Car championships in Levin. The two-day championship meeting starts on Saturday at 10.30am at the Levin Events Centre. Organiser Stu Russell said this is the biggest meeting the club has hosted and it will be all-action on both days.

He said competitors are coming from as far south as Christchurch, north from Tauranga, and everywhere in between. Current champion Kev Smith has a colourful history, successfully racing F1 stock cars in England, before moving to New Zealand, where he headed to the dirt tracks in superstocks at Palmerston North’s Robertson Holden International Speedway. He suffered an injury that put him out of the driver’s seat,

however his competitive nature and love of stock-car racing led him to the miniature version of radio-controlled cars and the New Zealand title, which he will be defending. NZ2 Aaron Smith will make the trip to Levin from New Plymouth, hunting for the NZ1 tag, as will Sam Gray, currently NZ3, from Paraparaumu. Russell said 66 competitors will be split into four groups, with the top 20 going into the three heats for the championship.

On Sunday, the club will be running the Horowhenua RC stock-car championships, street stocks and saloons. Russell said at this stage there will be “real-deal” stock cars on display on Saturday. “These cars will be here during the day and most will be competing in the Robin Pratt Memorial Race in Palmerston later that night. So come down, meet the drivers, look at the cars and then watch the exciting action from the RC championships.”

INDOOR BOWLS The Ihakara Indoor Bowls Club’s election of officers for 2015 and financial report was presented at this month’s meeting, following a minutes’s silence for Bobbie Pescini, patroness and valued member of the club for many years. President Viv Hudson said the club was in good spirits and members supported other clubs, where practical. It was decided to hold a memorial event between two clubs, in honour of Bobbie, to be decided next year and a trophy bought. A fitting tribute to Bobbie will hopefully be posted in the hall at some stage, said Ms Hudson. The club will do a drive in early 2015 to attract new members to come and enjoy “the game for life”. There is an assumption that indoor bowls is for older people but more and more young ones are taking up the challenge, and each member was asked to bring along one new person next year. Election of Officers: President Viv Hudson, Vice-president Trevor Fraser, secretary/ treasurer Wendy Mclean and Match Committee Brent Prouting, Phillip Davies and Trevor Fraser. The Ihakara Indoor Bowls Club meets at the Ihakara Hall on Monday evenings from midMarch until September. For more information, please phone Wendy McLean 3689429 or Viv Hudson 3687191.

BOWLS RESULTS Levin RSA

The weekly triples, sponsored by Eckersley Motors, were played in windy conditions, making bowling difficult, and the experienced team of Lorraine Willers were the only team to win four games. 1. Lorraine Willers — Ray Lovejoy — Carol Seal — 4 wins, 22 ends, 55 points. 2. Keith Cameron — John Gray — Archie Stevenson — 3 wins, 18 ends, 48 points. 3. John Graumans — Gary Burns — Barry Richardson — 3 wins, 17 ends, 49 points. Results from the week: Horowhenua Fives: 5 games, 5 wins to R.S.A. Tuesday 21 — Pennants round two. Wednesday 22 — Rotary — Central & Foxton. Melva Ritson 28 — Otaki. Melva Ritson 29 — Levin Women’s. Thursday 30 will be the big Armistice Tournament at RSA Bowls. Women’s pairs have been completed with champions for the ladies — winners Margaret Heather and Lorraine Willers 2014-2015.

Own boss just the ticket for great, relaxed lifestyle fit “My name is David and I have two sons, Dylan aged 11 and Dagan aged nine. Being my own boss with Green Acres has allowed my work to fit into my lifestyle with the boys like a tee. It has been seven months since I started and I do not regret making the move to a more relaxed lifestyle. If you enjoy interacting and meeting new people, then this is the job for you. My customers are the most amazing people you could meet — one of the best parts of the job is the hospitality and build up of friendships. You work on your own, at your own speed and can put in the time to get the income suitable to your lifestyle. I love the job — especially in summer — but, hey, at the end of the day, you cannot have it both ways! If you want to take the pressure away and enjoy a more relaxed lifestyle with good management support, then consider a Green Acres franchise. I recommend it to anyone needing a change in life!” If this sounds like you, call us on 021 320-335 or visit www.greenacres.co.nz/franchisee for more info!

LEADING LIGHT: Mazda’s suite of new technology driver assist and safety technologies includes these newly developed adaptive LED headlights.

Mazda showcases headlamp technology M

azda is continuing to push the boundaries of technology, showcasing its next-generation Adaptive LED headlights system — the company’s latest breakthrough in active safety technology — at the CEATEC Japan 2014 IT and electronics exhibition in Tokyo. Mazda is the first Japanese carmaker to unveil such an autonomous high-beam control

system to the public. Soon to join Mazda’s i-ActivSense line-up of advanced safety systems, Adaptive LED Headlights (ALH) features LED array high-beam technology that splits the LEDs into four independently controllable blocks. Andrew Clearwater, managing director of Mazda New Zealand says that the system is quite amazing to witness and

adds yet another dimension to the safety of Mazda vehicles. “The team in Japan are continually working on groundbreaking safety technology and the possibilities seem endless. These adaptive headlights give drivers a new level of safety on our roads at night, and not only those inside our cars but other motorists as well.” Like High Beam Control

(HBC), a related system available with all new-generation Mazda vehicles, ALH uses a camera to detect oncoming and preceding vehicles. But instead of switching off the high beams entirely to avoid impairing other drivers’ vision, ALH shuts off only the LEDs shining in their specific direction. So the high beams remain on at all times, enhancing visibility and safety at night.

ALH also comes with widedistribution low beams, which add LEDs to the sides of the headlamps to shed light where conventional headlights do not. Highway mode, meanwhile, is another ALH feature that automatically adjusts the forward aim of the headlamps upwards when travelling at highway speeds to illuminate road signs and potential obstacles earlier.
