Right Tyres. Right Choice.

Plenty of options for casting votes By DALE WICKEN With the general election only two days away, advanced voting booths around Palmerston North have been busy with people getting in early to have their say. As at 4pm on Monday, 287,735 people nationwide had already cast their vote for the general election, over double the amount who had voted at the same point in the last general election. More than 300 advanced voting stations have been set up around the country, according to Electoral Commission chief executive Robert Peden. Early voting at Te Manawa has proven busy, with staff noticing a “definite increase” in numbers on the first day of voting. “It’s been very busy. We had 495 votes yesterday and 636 on Sunday,” said staff member Hannah Southward. While Ms Southward said there were more elderly people coming in to vote, she said she had seen a range of people from all walks of life come in. On the first day of early voting on September 3, 12,211 people voted nationwide, which was more than double the 5,459 who cast their ballots on the first day of early voting for the 2011 General Election. registrars office on Matthews Ave said they were “flatpacked” with incoming votes. Local candidates have been out and about this week urg-

ing people to vote, and the local Labour contingent are even offering a free ride to voting booths for those that don’t have transport.

At the last election, 84.5 per cent of eligible voters were enrolled in the Palmerston North electorate, but turnout only came to 74.2 per cent. According to statistics New Zealand, 41.8 per cent of young people did not vote at the last election compared with 5.2 per cent of people aged 65 and over. Advance voting was introduced in 2002 so is not a new concept, but prior to 2011 a statutory declared reason for not being able to vote on election day was required. In Palmerston North early voting can be conducted at Te Manawa, UCOL's learning hub, the Massey University Students' Association and the Summerhill Shopping Centre and will be open until election day on September 20.

Visitors to Palmerston North’s Hospital wards and people attending clinics, as well as hospital employees, have reacted negatively to bus service administrators proposed improvements to be made in a couple of years. One person commented, “We need services now — some of us won’t be here to see them then”. The posting of schedules at important city locations has long been called for and hospital services are perhaps the most important. A list of terminal departures is all horizons administrators have provided. I’ve created schedules, assisted by others, for the hospital bus stops on Rangitikei Street. We attempted to consult Horizons about its accuracy (having used their published

terminal departures) but got no substantive acknowledgement so please consider these times approximate. Staff at the hospital’s admissions desk have said they’ll keep a copy of these schedules for public consultation. The Citizens’ Advice Bureau has given assurances this information will also be available by ringing (06) 357-0647. City residents might clip this letter and keep it in case they need a bus from the hospital in future. Bullying in sights By ALECIA ROUSSEAU Those addressing bullying in the region are determined to reduce the number of victims in our community by providing extra support and education. The iCAN Youth Action Group against bullying was established last year as part of Te Punanga Haumaru’s project for those aged 0 to 19. Encouraging a collaborative approach, the organisation builds on existing expertise and experience established by groups like Feilding’s iCAN. Project co-ordinator Louis Bartley said their primary objective was to rely on community support and reduce bullying. “iCAN was chosen as it embodied ‘empowering ourselves to lead social change’,” he said. Joining the project 10 months ago, Mr Bartley admits he knew little about bullying prevention. “Almost 12 months later I have a greater appreciation of the extent of bullying and what can be achieved by reaching out to the community.” Four members of the Manawatu Youth Ambassadors lead the group which

includes 14 students aged between nine and 21 years old. Five adult volunteers have also formed a community support group. “We welcome involvement from other schools or groups in the Manawatu region,” Mr Bartley said. “We would definitely love to have more parents or business owners involved.” Their bystander education programme ‘Don’t stand-by, speak out’, which was developed by a parent, is now being tested at Lytton Street School. “It really is a fantastic achievement, which the youth action group have been an integral part of.” According to statistics, more than twothirds of New Zealanders will experience bullying. Te Punanga Haumaru was launched in 2012 to help communities create a safe and nurturing environment for children. Most bullying happens in school and the effects on young people include being less likely to attend school and poorer long-term health and education outcomes. ■ If you’re interested in joining iCAN or finding out more, please email louis@temanawa.org.nz.

Bully breeds in need of help

■ The term pitbull is often used to describe dogs with similar physical characteristics. ■ The first bull and terrier breed came about in the mid 1800s Victorian England. The strength and courage of the bulldog, the intelligence and dexterity of the terrier was a union that saw fortune in vermin control and gambling sports of badger baiting and pit fighting. ■ Breeder James Hinks showed his prized English bulldog in 1860; this helped him develop his own examples of the English white terrier and the dalmation. With these he developed the earliest example of a bull terrier ("a dog with a balance of substance and a gracious appearance") first seen in May 1862.

Breed discrimination against pitbull type dogs contributes to the thousands who are put to sleep every year unwanted and abused, according to the owner of a local charity. Bullied Dogs Advocacy and Rescue was set up by Summer Aitken; a woman with a passion for dogs who she says are often misunderstood. She began the rescue focusing on the Manawatu and Wanganui after “large” numbers of wandering strays were ending up at local pounds. Legislation in New Zealand means these facilities are often unable to rehome these dogs as they are deemed aggressive. Ms Aitken says breed specific legislation is not based on fact, rather it focuses on hype and feeds into a fear that is unjustified. “I have a personal love of the bull breeds after rescuing my own pit-cross almost two years ago and I wanted to do something more to help these dogs locally,” she said. “I'm also part of the team at ARAN who rescue mainly pound dogs.” One of Ms Aitken's projects is a petition asking the Wanganui District Council to address animal welfare and rehoming rates in their pound. An application for funding has also been submitted in hopes of holding a desexing programme. “We will launch this in Wanganui and Manawatu with the hope fewer unwanted litters will mean less unwanted dogs and pups ending up in the pound and fewer litters being sold irresponsibly into the community.” Since the organisation began in June, over a dozen dogs have been rehomed. “We have two pups and an adult dog in our care at the moment — the pups were

Candidates answer local questions By DALE WICKEN

2014041 3/14

Three candidates faced up to some tough questions at Palmerston North City Library last week in one of the final candidate meetings before the general election this weekend. Jack McDonald, Jono Naylor and Iain Lees-Galloway responded to questions written on blackboards which had been placed at various locations around the city. When talking about land ownership, Jono Naylor said a lot of people had the wrong idea about National allowing foreigners to purchase land in New Zealand. “National doesn’t have a policy to sell land to overseas buyers, it has to be shown that no New Zealander wants to buy the land before foreign buyers have a chance,” he said. Labour’s Iain Lees-Galloway disagreed, saying this would allow foreign buyers to push land prices up which wouldn’t benefit New Zealand. He said overseas investment in New Zealand would be a good idea only if it added value and created jobs. Jack McDonald, of the Greens, said their party was focused on adding value to products rather than increasing the volume. He also expanded on his party’s investment in research and development. “At the moment we’ve got all our eggs in a few baskets, namely the primary industries. The Greens plan to invest $1 billion into research and development,” He also stipulated he was there to garner support for the party vote to help bring Greens to 15 per cent rather than promoting himself as a candidate. Poverty was another area of discussion with Mr Lees-Galloway saying 40 per cent of families in poverty are in work.

ANSWERS: A public meeting at the Library last week saw local candidates respond to questions the community had written on blackboards around the city. PHOTO: DALE WICKEN

“Wages are too low, hours too few and work is insecure,” he said. Each candidate was also asked why they wanted to be an MP. Mr McDonald said he wanted to represent young people, Mr Lees-Galloway wants his children and grandchildren to have more opportunities growing up than he did and Mr Naylor said he wants to see Palmerston North fulfil its potential.

CONSUMER ADVICE

Ticket scalping — what you need to know Ticket scalping is where someone other than the concert promoter on-sells tickets at high prices to make a quick profit. There is no specific legislation in New Zealand against scalping unless it is a ‘major event’ in which case the ticket cannot be sold for more than the purchased price. To date only the Rugby World Cup has been a ‘major event’. Remember, buying tickets from an unauthorised seller can put you at risk of being supplied with a fake ticket, or even no ticket at all.

If you do buy tickets from an unauthorised seller, ensure you pay only by secure methods and keep all transaction records in case things do go wrong. You then have proof of what was agreed to if you try to recover your losses from the seller. It’s safer to buy tickets from the event organiser or authorised sellers. To find an authorised seller visit the official website or contact your local ticket office. If for some reason you’re unable to attend a concert or

event you may want to on-sell your ticket to recoup the cost. Your right to on-sell the ticket depends on the terms or conditions the authorised seller specified. For free and confidential advice and information on this or any other matter visit the Palmerston North Citizens Advice Bureau, Community House, 77 King Street, Palmerston North. We’re open Monday to Friday, 9am4.30pm.Phone us on (06) 357-0647/ 0800 367 222 or send an email to cab.palmn@xtra.co.nz.

Handbag full of theatre magic at Centrepoint

GDN180914glorias

New Zealand actor Helen Moulder is bringing her new solo show, Gloria’s Handbag, to the Dark Room at Centrepoint from Sept 24 – 28. “I love coming to Palmerston North,” Helen says. “I have family here so it’s a great excuse to visit.” Helen was last at Centrepoint in Shop Till You Drop and has brought other solo plays to Palmerston North as well including Playing Miss Havisham and A Vote for Cynthia. Gloria’s Handbag, which opened at Circa Theatre in Wellington in March, is about a 97-year-old woman who hasn’t long to live and who splashes out on a oneoff Italian designer handbag. Her son is horrified she has wasted so much money but the purchase sets off a series of events which transform Gloria’s last days. “I think men might think the title a bit

old ladyish,” said Helen, “But there are six characters, aged between 21 and 97, including two guys, one of whom is an Australian gardener.” Helen says she has to work quite hard switching from one character to the other. The play includes music from Mozart’s Magic Flute and some magic tricks which Helen has had to learn for the production. “Studying magic with two magicians has been fantastic fun. I thought I’d never master some of it but, with time and practise, it’s amazing what you can do.” Helen wrote the play with a colleague, Sue Rider, in Brisbane. “We wanted to write about all the stuff we gather over a lifetime and our relationship to objects and their influence on us, but other themes have crept in — the ageing process, families and a future where the accumulation of things may not be so important. It’s been a hugely rewarding experience.” Helen plans to keep the play in her repertoire for several years. “With a bit of luck, I may keep going until I’m 97.” After Palmerston North, the play is touring to the Auckland area and then on to Sydney. ■ Centrepoint Theatre – the Dark Room. Monty’s Real Estate has a new face in Feilding. Teresa Browne, is passionate about Feilding as a place to buy a home or business. “Buying a home is a big deal and we want to make that as stress free as possible,” says Teresa. Having lived in Feilding for 22 years, she’s well-known in the community, and well aware of everything Feilding has to offer. Her family races at Manfeild and knows the benefits of living in the small, close-knit community. “Monty’s are supportive the whole way through the buying or selling process. We don’t just stick up a sign and leave; we keep in continuous contact and do all we can to promote your property.” They stick to their motto of “selling with soul”. The family orientated approach that Monty’s takes is what Teresa loves about the business, by putting family first and finding the best possible solutions for all involved. Monty’s Real Estate was founded by husband and wife team Monty and Wendy Bakewell in 2010. Monty was the first person to sell a $1 million dairy farm

A Colyton businesswoman has come up with a business idea that’s brightening up the lives of people all across the country. Julie O’Connor makes silk flower arrangements that can be used for an array of purposes. Whether it’s to brighten up the décor in the home or office or for weddings, Julie’s arrangements are durable and don’t wilt or need water like their fresh counterparts.

All arrangements are treated for outdoor conditions with UV protection spray and last from 12 months to 2 years depending on the situation of the gravesite and weather conditions. Ranging in price from $25 to $50, it’s not a lot to pay for something that lasts so long. Julie says she’s always had flair with flowers, which started with Christmas table center pieces and grew to include all sorts of bouquets. She’s been making arrangements for four years now and also makes garters, horseshoes, serviette rings and handmade cards. “If I’m watching television I have to be doing something with my hands,” she says. Each arrangement is different and can be customized to the customers’ request. Whether you love roses, gladiolas, ranunculus, lilies or tulips, Julie can get you sorted. Her at-home showroom at 279 Colyton Road has plenty of arrangements available for purchase and she’s on hand for advice and orders if you’re after a certain arrangement. Give her a call on (06) 328 7040 if you’re wanting some flowers with flair.

While city boy Tiwai Nathan found it hard to adjust to the early morning starts when he began Land Based Training’s 44 week agriculture course, he says he’s now used to it and loves getting out on the farm. “I do milking, calving and feeding the calves and get up at 3.50am,” he said. His hard work has resulted in paid employment on a 1700 dairy farm.

Seeing students achieve results is one of the best things about Jackie Payne’s job. She’s been a field officer with Land Based Training for the past year and thoroughly enjoys her job. Land Based Training offers a free youth guarantee programme for 16 to 19 year old school leavers who wish to complete the national certificate in agriculture level two. The course offers two days of

practical on-farm experience and two days in the classroom. Students also learn cooking and employment skills. “He’s just grown so much” says field officer Jackie Payne. “I have to tell the students this course is like a job, you turn up every day. It’s preparing you for the workforce.” Ms Payne and the tutors h a v e e x t e n si v e f a r m i ng c o n t a ct s a n d a r e o f t e n approached by farmers who

STAR PUPIL OF THE MONTH Our Star Student for September is Trey Cameron, who attends our centre for maths and English tuition. He has made huge gains in both areas, and has much more confidence about school as a result. He enjoys his lessons, and is excited about learning. This is what he says: “Kip McGrath has helped me with my Maths and English so I can do well in school. It’s fun learning from my tutors.”

Palmerston North | 355 3450 188 Broadway Ave (behind Ray White Real Estate) Email: teachingmatters@xtra.co.nz

Many NCEA students find the mock exams in Term 3 quite a difficult experience. They’re not sure what to expect of the external exams and they may not have had much time to revise. External exams start early in Term 4 and there is little time to learn from mistakes made in the mocks. It’s a very good idea to spend some time in the September holidays to go over mock exams to see what went wrong or where things could be improved. This will increase confidence, remove stress and ensure better results in the final exams. Kip McGrath is offering an opportunity in the second week of the holidays (October 6 — 10) to revise and revisit the requirements of each Achievement Standard in English, Maths, Science, Physics and Chemistry. Qualified, experienced teachers will consider one Achievement Standard at a time in a session lasting 80 minutes. During this time, students will be offered teaching, discussion, review of exams, practice opportunities and feedback on their answers. These sessions will be offered to small groups of students in a friendly but focused environment. The cost per student per session is $50. ■ Book your place by phoning or

Age Concern Week 27 September - 5 October

Serving the needs of older people The Manawatu Branch of Age Concern is still alive and kicking, just in a different location. The branch is now located at 51

Waldegrave Street opposite Arena Manawatu and continues to provide support for the elderly in our community. The organisation provides two main

services, both of which provide help and support to over 65s. Elder abuse and neglect prevention services provides support for those facing abuse or neglect. Support is completely confidential. Age concern also provides an Accredited Visitation Service (AVS) for those who may be socially isolated. A weekly visit can go a long way towards reducing social isolation and loneliness. It is also a way of monitoring our older citizens and gives Age Concern an opportunity to provide follow up support if required. “It’s about breaking that cycle of abuse,” says Robyn Baker of the Manawatu Branch. “The more people that become aware of elder abuse the better it is for prevention.” The last three months at Age Concern Manawatu have been action packed and have seen the appointment of AVS social

worker Fern Brooking who oversees Age Concern’s visiting service. Fern and Robyn have been working hard to inform the community of the continuation of their services and the re-establishment of Age Concern’s role in the community. October 1 is international day of the older person which celebrates the older adult and the wisdom they bring to our communities. Age Concern Manawatu has a variety of activities planned to make this a fun celebration to engage the community and raise awareness. Age Concern Manawatu covers a vast area ranging from Eketahuna to Dannevirke, Feilding, Shannon, Bulls and Palmerston North. It has proven to be a resilient organisation and provides an absolutely essential service within the community.

For the influx of unwanted insect pests about to invade your homes and properties, ZERObugs are armed and ready! Following on from a very busy winter period that has seen numerous rodents dealt to, Roger Johnstone of ZERObugs Pest Control is all set to go to protect your sanity and your wallet. Let ZERObugs take care of these insect invaders. Using environmentally friendly insecticides and controlled baits, results are as the saying goes ‘guaranteed’. “After the initial treatment, we would like to be contacted if any remaining pests are posing a problem, in which case a no-charge followup is required,” says owner/operator Roger. ZERObugs has a broad residential and commercial client base across Manawatu, reaching into the Horowhenua, Rangitikei and Tararua regions. Fully registered with the Environment Protection Authority and a registered Approved Handler of insecticides, ZERObugs Ltd has become a respected name in pest control, with a strong dedication to customer service and satisfaction. The addition of a ZERObugs website makes it easier to find out about any information and services available. Check them out on www.zerobugs.co.nz. Roger would also like to point out to all those who are contemplating getting their properties treated for pest control,

GDN180914zerobugs

to choose a pest control company carefully. Do some research, get prices, question the operator about what’s involved in getting the problem solved. Like any profession or industry, there are ‘cowboys’ out there. Check their ‘credentials’— they need to be registered Approved Handlers and possibly (but not

necessarily) members of the Pest Management Association of New Zealand. And remember, be wary of deals — if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is! Give ZERObugs a call today, phone Karen on 355-8161 or 0800 116 016 or Roger direct on 027 625-8180. Service with a smile!

ROAD

SAFETY Check your car — safety basics Whatever your vehicle’s age, make or model, there are things you can do to keep it running well and safely. It’s your responsibility to maintain your vehicle to ensure it’s in a roadworthy condition at all times. The Warrant of Fitness check is a minimum safety check and shouldn’t be confused with a vehicle maintenance (service) check. You don’t have to wait until your Warrant of Fitness is due. If in doubt, check it out! It doesn’t take long to give your car a quick safety check. Just give it a regular TWIRL and take it to an expert if anything’s wrong. Check your car — TWIRL: Tyres ■ Check the tread depth. Minimum legal depth is 1.5mm but the more tread you have the better the grip and the safer you’ll be. ■ Check the tyre pressure — correct levels can usually be found on the inside door frame. ■ Look for cracks or bubbles in the sides. ■ Look for sharp objects stuck in the tyres. Windscreen, Wipers and Mirrors ■ Check your wiper blades for wear and tear. ■ Clean your mirrors and windscreen inside and out. ■ Get your windscreen fixed if it’s chipped or cracked. ■ Check your windscreen washer fluid is full and the spray is working. Indicators ■ Turn your hazard lights on and walk around the car — check all indicators are flashing. Rust ■ Look for obvious areas of corrosion that can weaken the car’s structure. Lights ■ Check lenses are clean and not cracked or hazy. ■ Check your headlights, reversing lights and brake lights are working. Check your back lights by reversing close to a wall so you can see the reflection in your rear view mirror. Softball club swings back into action By DALE WICKEN After an eight-year absence, the Feilding United Softball Club has been resurrected. The club, which had a 30-year history, officially started up again last weekend after a group of people with an interest in the sport decided to get things moving. Club secretary Lisa Tattle started asking around when her daughter became involved in the sport and discovered Feilding once had a club. “I was told Feilding used to have a club and thought, well, let’s do it again,” she said. The club had their first open day last weekend and attracted around 26 people, who Mrs Tattle said were enthusiastic and keen on the sport. The club organisers have also dropped player fees to make it more accessible. “Softball can be a reasonably

expensive sport and, if you’ve got three kids in a family wanting to play, it becomes a lot,” Mrs Tattle said. “It’s not about making money, it’s about developing the sport.” Softball is New Zealand’s most successful sport with more world cup wins than any other code. Mrs Tattle says it’s also the most social and hospitable sport she’s ever been involved in. “The skills the sport teaches are transferable to other sports as well and helps with confidence too. My daughter’s confidence has just skyrocketed since she started playing.” The club are to play in their first competition this October. ■ If you’re interested in getting involved, phone Lisa on (06) 323-2044 or email her at feildingsoftball@gmail.com. Visit www.sportsground.co.nz/fusc for more information.

When you need an LBP

If you’re thinking of getting building or renovation work done on your house or apartment, you need to check if it’s ‘restricted building work’ (RBW). If it is, you’ll need a licensed building practitioner – or LBP – to do it. Restricted building work involves the building’s structure, weather tightness, and design of fire safety systems. Because this work is so important, it’s only allowed to be done by licensed building practitioners (LBPs). LBPs are assessed before getting licensed, and have to maintain their skills to keep their licence. Restricted building work, and the requirement to use LBPs to do it, was brought in on 1 March 2012 (through changes to the Building Act 2004). What are LBPs? In November 2007 the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) (formerly Department of Building and Housing) established the licensed building practitioner scheme under the Building Act 2004. This scheme sets out a regulated process where skilled and/or qualified building practitioners must demonstrate their ability to meet industry consulted competencies in order to obtain the status of being LBPs. The scheme has 7 licence classes:

LBPs are designers, carpenters, brick and blocklayers, roofers, external plasterers, site and Restricted building work (RBW) is work that is foundation specialists who have been assessed critical to the integrity of a building. It must be done to be competent to carry out work essential to a residential building’s structure or weather tightness. properly to ensure the building is structurally sound and weather tight.

Why use an LBP Hiring good professionals to help you can be crucial to the whole building experience. Licensed building practitioners (LBPs) have undergone a robust application process, including a written application, verbal testing by proficient assessors, and referees’ confirmation of their work. They keep up with the changing industry and undergo continuous skills maintenance. Managing building projects If you do not want to manage the building project yourself then you may want to consider engaging a Site LBP. A Site licence shows competency in organising and managing building projects. This includes having up to date knowledge of regulatory requirements, technical knowledge of construction methods and practices, managing personnel and providing technical supervision. When you undertake a building project make certain that your designer is licensed or is a registered architect or a chartered professional engineer.

Limited edition supercars added to museum display F

our limited edition supercars — an immaculate 12-cylinder Ferrari Enzo and three pristine examples of the supercharged V8 Mercedes-Benz McLaren SLR Stirling Moss — are now on show at the National Motorsport Museum at Highlands Motorsport Park in Cromwell. In what could become an ongoing arrangement with the cars’ owner, an Australian collector, the three Mercedes-Benz and the Ferrari add yet another level of prestige to the popular museum display, which is enjoyed by hundreds of people each week. “We’re very honoured to have this collector entrust some of his rare and exotic vehicles to Highlands Motorsport Park,” said Highlands’ general manager Mike Sentch. “With just 400 Enzo Ferraris ever made, it’s not often Kiwi automotive fans can see one of these incredible cars in New Zealand. And with only 75 of the Stirling Moss edition MercedesBenz McLaren SLRs ever made, to have three of them here at Highlands … well, it’s pretty special for our whole team to be able to share them with museum visitors.” Sentch had the privilege of driving one of the Mercedes-Benz McLarens around the 4.1km Highlands circuit. “It was hard to describe the feeling of driving this car around Highlands with its prestigious history and incredible performance. “It’s likely that this is the only time that three examples of the Stirling Moss edition Mercedes-

Benz McLaren SLR will ever be on display together in New Zealand so we hope car enthusiasts will take the opportunity to visit Highlands in the next few months to savour this sight.” The Mercedes-Benz McLarens and the Enzo Ferrari join an everchanging array of vehicles in the Highlands National Motorsport Museum. Among the most popular are the Benetton 191 Ford Cosworth Formula 1 car in which seven-time world F1 champion Michael Schumacher earned his first-ever points, and the UK-built Mosler MT900 GT3 sports car, the

WHAT’S IN THE STARS FOR YOU NEXT WEEK? VIRGO

ARIES

While the Sun turns the solar spotlight on your relationships Venus stays behind to tie up loose ends on the work front as the professional tide turns.

While the Sun brings your birthday month to an end on Tuesday it doesn’t bring to an end the job of defining what you want from the coming year.

LIBRA

TAURUS

This is when the battle to find a balance between work and play becomes more serious, with forces on both fronts becoming a lot more determined.

GEMINI

The Sun’s return to a fun, playful and romantically charged part of your chart puts an official seal on things, making this a lot more mandatory.

forces come together to create a turning point on both fronts, ready to put the past behind you and move on.

SCORPIO

LEO

The month long wind down of your old solar year and for lining up for a new solar year kicks off this week, turning your focus inwards.

As the tide turs on the work front, releasing any handbrakes and taking away any blocks to forward movement, keep an eye on where the money is.
